Woman shot by oven while trying to cook waffles

An 18-year-old Florida woman was only slightly injured this week when she was shot by her friend's oven, police said.

Aalaya Walker was visiting a friend in St. Petersburg Monday when they decided they wanted some late-night waffles, The Tampa Bay Times reported. So Walker began preheating the oven — unaware that her friend, JJ Sandy, 25, was storing a magazine from his .45-caliber Glock 21 in the oven.

The magazine exploded about 9 p.m. ET, spraying casing fragments at high speed and striking Walker. She managed to pick some of the fragments out of her leg and chest and then took a bus to the hospital, where she was treated and released.

Sandy told police he'd stored the gun in a drawer but had stored the magazine in the oven. Four rounds were in the 13-capacity magazine, he said.

Gun and ammunition references indicate that the .45-caliber bullets commonly used in Glocks can explode at temperatures as low as 280 degrees — or even lower if they've been exposed to heat for a long time, which can degrades the structure.

Sandy "stated that he does not have a temperature gauge on the oven so he estimates the temperature based on how far the knob is turned," according to the police report, which was obtained by the Times. "I observed that the inside of the oven was damaged."

In a memorable 2007 episode, the popular science TV show "Mythbusters" found in several experiments that bullets can explode "once the oven was hot enough."

"Without a gun barrel to contain and direct the propellant gases, the bullets did not develop enough speed to pierce the glass or steel portions of the oven. The shell casings actually caused more damage than the bullets," it found — essentially reproducing what police said happened Monday.

Sandy wasn't charged because he had a proper concealed weapons permit, The Tampa Tribune reported.

Let ye who has never done something stupid (and lived ot learn a lesson from it) cast the first stone.

Wow! There are a lot of brilliant people on this list who have never screwed up!

Well, I've never tried to check the fuel level in my gas tank by using a match to look down the filler pipe. There are just some things that should be self-evident to anyone with an IQ higher than room temperature.

This guy was deemed to be a responsible gun owner by the State of Florida.

Either Florida needs higher standards, or we need a different definition of "responsible."

NRA safety tip: always check your oven for loaded magazines.

This Gomer dispels the notion that all legal gun owners are responsible. I know a few legal gun owners who are a accident waiting like this moron in Florida.

heck she wasn't even shot ,she was fragged , the casing fragged and went through the oven not the actual round itself .............

didn't know you cooked waffles in the oven , guess I must have been doing them wrong all these years, or perhaps i'm keeping my ammo in the wrong place and should put it in the oven instead of in the safe , maybe then my oven will get used for something ..... hmmmm my luck i'll move the ammo a girlfriend will come over and wanna cook some waffles in my oven and get fragged when she doesn't look in it first to see if its empty ...

Notice to makers of the Rival Belgium Home Waffle Iron. This is to notify you that we intend to bring legal action in superior court for the state of Florida. A woman was injured because of faulty iron instructions and the lack thereof. We therefore find you in violation of the consumer protection act 1968, 15 U.S.C. 1601. Failure to place a red label warning on the box has caused harm to a consumer. This tort claim seeks $10M in damages for Aalaya Walker of St. Petersburg, Florida and all other consumers who purchased same iron knowing that storage of ammunition could in fact cause bodily harm and or death. We seek a court order to force Rival to print a red label warning that ammunition stored in waffle irons can and will cause a detonation of the primer caps and or propellant charge. We seek $800M in total damages for the affected class.

You do realize there wasn't a waffle iron involved, right? Odds are she was simply planning to heat frozen waffles in the oven (perhaps there was no toaster available).

My god what extremely poor reporting. Ever heard of Google for cryin out loud?

                        What are Glock bullets?

Since Glock doesn't make ammunition only guns, I'm a bit perplexed by that comment in the article.

Further a concealed weapons permit has no bearing on a gun in the home. Outside yes inside NO.

However the owner is a idiot for putting ammunition in the oven. A Darwin award waiting to happen.

More proof that while the mentally ill should be banned from owning guns, let the idiotic, low-life d-bags own all the guns they want until they are all dead from asinine behavior and unbelievably bad judgment. This applies to their friends as well - this woman learned hanging out with the scum of the Earth can be detrimental to your health, and most of those who live by the gun, die by that very same gun...good riddance. (And only in Florida would the police base charges on whether or not the owner had a concealed weapon license - no weapon was involved, only ammunition, but failed logic is Florida's favorite pastime. Florida is the test bed for insanity in this country...at least until it disappears into the sea...good riddance again.)

Unfortunately, as was the case here, it's frequently some poor innocent bystander that pays the price. The idiot responsible here apparently didn't even get a citation.

The last sentence should be changed to a truthful statement: Sandy wasn't charged because he had a proper concealed weapons permit,

change to: Sandy wasn't charged even though he was stupid.

You don't need a permit just to own a gun - you only need permits to carry them outside of your home. Anybody can legally own a gun that can pass the background check.

"Cook" is a bit of an overstatement on the part of the reporter. It is possible to heat frozen waffles in the oven, though they are already 'cooked' at that point. Perhaps her brilliant boyfriend doesn't own a toaster?
