8 LAPD officers involved in shooting after Dorner 'case of mistaken identity'

LAPD Capt. Phil Tingirides and LAPD Sgt. Emada Tingirides recalled fearful and anxious days under police protection, after their eight-member family was targeted by former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner.

Bullet holes in front doors, trees and a kitchen serve as reminders of the chaos brought to their Torrance, Calif. neighborhood during a frantic manhunt for an ex-police officer bent on revenge killings.

Nine bullets pierced a tree on Redbeam Avenue where two newspaper delivery women were shot by police officers who had mistaken them for fugitive Christopher Dorner.

Margie Carranza and her 71-year-old mother, Emma Hernandez, were delivering the Los Angeles Times before dawn near the home of a police officer named in Dorner’s angry manifesto.

The shooting occurred Feb. 7 after officers were notified of a truck that matched the description of Dorner’s gray 2005 Nissan Titan. Hernandez suffered two bullet wounds to the back. She was released from the intensive care unit and was recovering. Carranza, 47, had minor injuries related to shattered glass and a wounded finger.

The women’s lawyer counted 102 bullet holes in their blue Toyota Tacoma and several more in Hernandez’s hoodie.

Weeks later, memories of the shooting were still evident, with five bullet holes piercing a home’s front door and more in walls and garages that lined the street.

"My guess is that they threw policy out the window and got in trouble," said resident Steve McDonald, whose solar panels sustained bullet damage. "They're lucky they didn't hit each other because there were bullets flying every which way."

More news from NBCLosAngeles.com

NBC4 has learned that eight LAPD officers were involved in the shootout. All of them have been assigned to non-field assignments until "the [police] chief decides otherwise."

So far, their names have not been released and there has been no comment from the Los Angeles District Attorney about pressing charges.

An attorney for the women, Glen Jonas said he’ll let the investigation run its course.

"If the city wants to do it the easy way and get it resolved; if they want to do it for hard way, then we’ll file a lawsuit," he said.

Police said they cannot comment on on-going internal investigations.

But some residents, despite being so close to the gunfire, said they understand the officers’ actions.

"I think they have to be supported through this," said Joanne Arnn. "Yes, it's unfortunate, thank goodness no one here was fatally injured, but it's not a very safe world."

Arnn said that Torrance Police Department contacted each household on the block to learn if anyone was injuries and offered to pay for any damage to their homes.

About two blocks away and thirty minutes after the women were shot, a Redondo Beach man was fired upon by officers who also mistook him for the wanted Dorner.

Again, you were not there and don't know what their reason was. You basing everything off what you read in a story and your own imagination.

We all know LAPD shoots first then asks questions and pays the lawsuit. Metta World was lucky when the police stormed his home tuesday.

Thrown in jail? Naaa.. You would have been killed. They have different rules when you shoot "one of their own" If you or I, (both tax paying citizens) got shot, there would be no "Man Hunt" out for the shooter... they would say its our own fault probably.. but take a shot at one of them and Suddenly the "Manhunt" is on. Why?

Do i have some animosity? yeah.. you could say that. When i was in mid 20's I was working as a carpenter while going to school at night. My van was broken into, and my tools stolen, The cop who showed up said it was "My Fault" because of the lifestyle I lived! I had 2 kids, was working full time and going to school at night! my fault? Screw them, Too bad Dorner Didn't take out all of the crooked ones first! My fault? I will never forget that.. that prick left without making a report... Nice huh? Give to the PBA? yeah i laugh when they call on the phone. I protect my own home and my property, I have no use for them.

Far too often cops get off with a "justified shooting" for what anyone else would be up on murder charges. This action here shows that they can not be trusted with their own weapons. When as you start getting as many cops getting shot as innocent people "reaching for" god knows what or even unarmed criminals for that matter, then I may start thinking differently, but I will continue to approach any and all police officers with caution. While I do understand there are many "good" cops out there, there is the Thin Blue Line that offends me and I will continue not to trust any of them.

And no they should not have our support for blindly firing at civilians. 102 bullets, How, I didnt even know police walked around with that kind of ammunition.

I'm sure one or two of these officers had "Personal Protection Weapons" with 30 round magazines. Now you know why the government doesn't want you or I to posses them. Imagine the amount of protection you'd have when these idiots come to take them away

      "Weapons in common use"

Take 8 cops with 18 rounds each in their pistols plus two extra magazines, that is a lot of ammo.

Police needing Police protection ?? So much for intense and extensive training but what can be expected from public servants who have to pay for their own bullets ?

I find it interesting that the people who live there and are the ones involved are supportive of their police and sympathetic to the circumstance and the human factor. The attorney is giving the benefit of the doubt and allowing them to do the right thing on the settlement before he considers a law suit. The couple who were tied up by Dornor had very nice remarks on how they were treated by their police. Dornors own Mother and Sister have took the side of the LAPD and apologized for what Chris put them through. The only ones that want to hang the LAPD and Torrence Police Department and San Bernadino Sheriff's Department are the ones that have not been involved.

I am thankful that we have people who have dedicated themselves to be a first responder. It is a tough job.

I've not heard the victims (the two women and the man in Redondo Beach) say they "understand" the police's irresponsible actions and, in the case of the women, injured for no reason whatsoever.

True, the woman's attorney is not yelling and screaming He knows he's got a great case and any jury will award an enormous amount of money to his clients. His client's only crime was driving a white truck. There appears to have been no other link from what I've heard so far. Gender was wrong, number of people was wrong, age was wrong, victim response was wrong (the women didn't fire back).

Te attorney is just being "reasonable" because it puts him in a better position when negotiations with the police and their insurers formally begin. He knows he's got the upper hand and will clean their clock if it goes to a jury -- and so does the government. People yell, scream, and posture when they don't have an ironclad case. When the do have an ironclad case, they sit calmly back and say "No, that offer isn't in the ballpark - I'd like to take this to a jury and I'm sure I will get much more than that from a jury".

1.Yes, Its a tough job, but first of all there was No excuse for their actions. None. I have a tough job, that does not forgive mistakes, why should they get special treatment?

2.The corruption is unreal in the LAPD. (I used to live there) That is not news.. that is a fact.

3.These cops were way out of line, and of the DA of course is going to wait. He is on the same payroll.

4.You obviously are in law enforcement or you wouldn't be defending them.

Okay, all of those who think "private citizens" shouldn't have guns and that only LEOs should have them should consider these two cases.

102 bullets??? In one vehicle??? With two women in it??? When you are searching for a good sized man??? When there is no return fire???

Thankfully the cops are not very good shots (for that alone, they should be fired at least for incompetence). They should be held criminally liable for their grossly negligent actions. This is much worse than the BART cop who mistakenly pulled his firearm instead of his taser out on someone who was resisting arrest - this was intentional abuse of innocent private citizens by multiple cops who overreacted. Something's rotten in the LAPD.

Clearly all the cops involved in both incidents were on a targeted execution mission (which was finally fulfilled at the house in Big Bear) clouded by emotions.

Perhaps we need to get the guns out of the hands of idiot police and distribute those guns and ammo, at no charge, to responsible citizens.

Gun Control -- sounds like the LAPD could use much more of it -- starting with identifying their target.

102 Shoots! Unacceptable and obviously under-trained. Not only did they shoot at the wrong person, but they were both alive after 102 rounds from 8 officers? Something is very, wrong here.

Joann Arnn - REALLY? You believe the cops should just start shooting just in case? What if they'd hurt or killed kids? Bet you'd have sung a different song. Sure hope it's you and yours next time. Bet you won't think it's nearly so neat. The police are the enemy of the American public. This situation only helps prove that the cops don't care how many civilians get hurt or killed. Cops sure don't go this crazy when there's a mass killer or serial killer loose when only civilians get killed. But they believe that cops are special, above the law, more important than anyone else. Clean house on LAPD - fire them all. They'd just as soon shoot you as look at you.

WTF? Nissan Titan, Toyota Tacoma? California cops are dildos. If you think this is bad, wait until Obama's FEMA Corps (look up Hitler's Jugend) is cut loose. FEMA is getting the bulk of the 2 billion rounds of ammunition the Government is hoarding. Guess what they're going to do with it.
