Storms to dump snow on New England, heavy rain on Southeast, forecasters warn

People across the Midwest are digging out from the snow after a big storm passed through, resulting in difficult commutes and school closures. NBC's John Yang reports.

Parts of New England were expected to be hit by heavy snowfalls while heavy rain was threatening to cause flash floods in parts of the Southeast, forecasters warned.

The National Weather Service  issued a winter storm watch at about 10 p.m. ET Friday for southern New Hampshire, northern Rhode Island, and much of central, northern and eastern Massachusetts, including Boston.

It said the area could be hit by up to 8 inches of snow, which some parts potentially getting nearly 10 inches.

“Snow will overspread the region tomorrow [Saturday] afternoon. The heaviest snow will occur tomorrow night into Sunday morning, when 1 to 2 inch per hour snowfall rates will be possible,” the NWS said.

“The biggest concern is that this will be a heavy wet snow. This will bring the potential for downed tree limbs and scattered power outages. Untreated roads are also expected to become snow covered and slippery,” the weather service said.

Temperatures were expected to be in the lower 30s with winds of 5-10 mph.

“Anyone traveling in the next 24 to 36 hours should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to modify travel plans should winter weather develop,” the NWS notice added.

NBC.Connecticut.com meteorologist Bob Maxon said the state would also see snow and rain from the weekend storm. He expected up to 4 inches of snow or more in the Litchfield Hills and northeast Connecticut.

South of Connecticut, rain was expected to be the problem.

"Days of heavy rainfall could lead to river flooding and flash flooding in the Southeast," the NWS said.

At 5:20 a.m. ET, the weather service issued a flash flood warning for Geneva and Houston counties in southeast Alabama, saying heavy showers and thunderstorms had been detected.

Weather.com reported that it expected that an areas from New York City to Philadelphia would “primarily” see rain.

Record snowfall in Wichita, Kansas, creates havoc at the airport where crews had to dig out a plane stuck on the tarmac. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

It said it expected 2 to 5 inches of snow in Boston, adding “the amount of rain versus snow that falls will dictate whether snowfall amounts are on the higher or lower end of this range.”

The storm hit parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan on Friday.

In Minnesota alone, the State Patrol said there were 124 crashes during the morning commute, killing one driver and injuring 23, NBC affiliate KARE in Minneapolis reported.

Pacific Northwest storm
Meanwhile, a storm in the Pacific Northwest was expected to bring strong winds through Saturday and dump 2 to 3 feet of snow on the Cascade Mountains through Monday, the NWS said.

Much of the Midwest is covered in a blanket of white as a massive winter storm has covered parts of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas with over a foot of snow. NBC's John Yang reports.

“Considerable blowing and drifting snow and an increased avalanche risk are expected in the high terrain for portions of the region,” it said.

The NWS issued winter storm warnings for parts of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Utah.

"Periods of heavy snowfall" were also expected Saturday in parts of Hawaii, according to another winter storm warning notice.

Up to 12 inches were possible at high altitudes in an area including Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, with temperatures in the mid-20s to mid-30s.

I don't wish for flooding, but, the Southeast is desparate for water.

I am glad that they are finally getting some.

This is due to weather change. This may also be due to Global warming. May the Storm stop. Americans should stay indoors and stock up all the essentials. Good time for the Family to stay together. May there be NO loss of lives, and NO destruction of houses and infrastructure. GOD Bless the Americans. GOD BLESS THE USA.

This is due to typical winter weather. While climate change is altering weather patterns, there is nothing unusual about this storm.

Oh no! Not more snow in the winter! How will we ever survive? We are becoming a nation being contantly hyped by the media and whining about any inconvenience to our lives.

This is not just because it's winter. If you've paid attention, these storms have been stronger than in the past. This is due to the fact that with the warmer climate, the jet stream has shifted and the warmer air is able to absorb more moisture, thus producing more violent storms produsing much more snow.

Gumps ... that's a load of crap. I've grown up in NE and winter is winter. I'll admit that the blizzard a few weeks back was a biggee but now the @sshole media is hyping any precipitation that heads our way. Irresponsible reporting and just plain sensationalized BS.

    Gumps,

the warmer air is able to absorb more moisture

My post was inspied by my observation of the shifts in the jet stream as well remembering high school chemistry (also meteorlogical training when I studied to be a private pilot) - warmer air is able to hold more moisture and the jet stream has shifted further to the south. That warmer, moisture-laden air then movesup into the plain states where it hits the colder air in the north - the result is predicable. Even Jacob007 conceded that the blizzard was more severe, but he still feels compelled to deny the obvious.

Here, Jabob007 - a little light reading for you: http://climatecommunication.org/new/articles/extreme-weather/winter-storms/

I know Anchorage got almost a foot of snow yesterday and I did not hear any headlines about our weather. It snows in Winter in Alaska, the Northeast , the mid Plalns and sometimes the South. The only people that should be a little freaked out about alot of snow is the deep South where people are not prepared for snow.

Ridiculous whining about Snow and it happens every year. Google headline 2 days ago CHicago to be hit with half of foot of snow, 6 inches, it is WINTER.

The people in this country should see the effect all these weather changes are having on the poor people of NY , CT and the NE states. perhaps that would get more people to be active in supporting the Red Cross in those areas and contribute to disaster relief funds in general.

The times they are a'changin. And so is the weather. Climate change is a fact that people will really have to start dealing with. If they publish a storm is coming and no one listens... (oh, sorta like all those idiots on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago a couple years ago...)who is to blame? The newspaper or the people who opted not to believe...

More snow in the North East. Who would have thought that, just because it's winter? And between 8 to 10" of snow is more news? Wow, Kansas City got more than that. Because the news stations are based on the east coast, it's news. Other places it's a note on page 7.

2-5 inches of snow with 5-10mph winds. Quite the blizzard. The rains in the southeast are probably the bigger problem. I think it must be a slow news day

Half these so called global warming posts must be youngsters. I sure can remember

Yep by golly... when i was a youngster and it snowed like this, we still had to get up and outta the cave to help dad trap small dinosaurs for dinner...no time off by god.

And then we had to go see if lightning struck anywhere so we could bring that magic warm thing home to heat the cave. we called it "Fire" by the way because one night dad got up and stepped in it and the words he used didn't translate to the dialect we used back in those modern times, but the word "fire" seemed to "catch" pretty well.

AH YES.... the ...."good ol days"...I remember them well...Dragging your girlfriend everywhere you went had a totally different meaning then as my now wife would tell you... But of course "change" had to rear its ugly head and that too had to change due to the weight factor. Seams that the woman found this new berry called chocolate and started eating way too many of them . Well My neighbor was always tinkering with something or other and one day he invented this thing he called a "wheel" to deal with it, but i said... nope not me if you have to cart em around get a smaller one, ...or even better yet get the "high High and all knowing muckity- muck " to make a law against consuming more then a few "chocolate berries" at a time....(then we can blame him).. Meanwhile the neighbor on the other side decided to approach it from a different angle he just got himself what we called a man-mate , that way he eliminated the dragging and carting altogether..... That didn't catch on or some reason, But I myself believe it had a lot to do with this new fangled "equality" thing, ya see no sooner did THEY do it then the women in the cave across the way.... ( you could barely tell it was a cave as they kept bring the plants from OUTSIDE to the INSIDE believe it or not)...anyway they tried the same thing... but then it was ALWAYS a fight over who would drag and who would be drug, we called it a "cat fight" due to the screeching sounds they made while fighting and ripping each others animal skins off.....( most of us guys just stood around and watched for some reason). ....Of course the cops would get called and next thing ya knew rocks would be flying every witch way from those slingshot happy Neanderthals. ...They really should have banned those high capacity rock bags ....but that's another story for another day.

but anyway...thanks for the stroll down memory lane Shoot Banchanumbers..

I think it is a small group of spammers that keep changing names and think they are getting away with it. There are ways Newsvine can track them down if they choose to. Any legitimate site would not go to all this trouble to sell something, so the site is probably full of malware or bots that will attempt to steal you identity.
