Police are investigating how a 5-year-old boy was shot in the shoulder in his home in The Bronx, New York City, Friday, authorities said.
The boy's mother and father were in their bedroom in Morrisania when they heard a pop noise shortly after 10:30 a.m., police said.
They rushed to their 5-year-old son's room and found him shot.
Police said it was not clear if the boy accidentally shot himself or if his 11-year-old brother accidentally shot him.
The father drove the boy to nearby Lincoln Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
The investigation was continuing.

You think this guy was an NRA member? How many of these shootings are caused by NRA members; 80%,90%;all of them? Or most likely- none of them. Until these morons realize gun safety, this will continue to happen. Taking guns away from responsible owners will do nothing to correct the problem.
Accept the fact that accidents, none of which are wanted, just happen in free societys. If this had been a cop's house and the injuries were minor, guess what? You never be reading about it. If you really, really know a cop, ask him/her about the guns he's given his wife, father, etc. This gun stuff isn't about taking up guns. It's about taking up YOUR guns.
NYC gun ban works really well! Idiots!
Another success story for Mayor Bloomberg. He has enough gun laws in NYC to stop this type of crime/accident, but he wants more, so it will not happen.. Get real Bloomberg and start thinking about something other than how you can put more money into your cofers.
Another editorial from the administration. NYC is the best example of perfidity regarding gun laws. You can buy a gun in most every freight elevator and bar in the city, but if you kill a home invader with it, they take you and the gun away. Why doesn't someone ask this question at these many fake press conferences: "What is the real object of government in this huge effort to disarm the middle class?" And how about a little more jury nullification when some poor slob is in the dock for saving his family from some thugs?
We'll probably find out later that they were playing with an AR-15 with a 100 round mag. Honey...you accidentally left your gun in the toy box again.
Possibly an illegal gun? Seems pretty obvious.
"The NRA doesn't speak for me."
That's what Ohio MoveOn member, parent, and gun owner Jerry Thompson has to say to Congress in a powerful new ad he just filmed. It will air on the Sunday talk shows and next week on cable news networks. The ad has already received great coverage from CNN, USA Today and The Huffington Post.1
After the Newtown massacre and the National Rifle Association's disgusting response, Jerry has had enough.
The gun violence prevention fight is heating up in the Senate this month, and the NRA is getting ready to write checks.2 If millions of people see Jerry's ad, we can drown out the NRA's money and their message, and pave the way for real reform.
Watch this gripping ad and share it with everyone you know.
Who is Jerry Thompson and what does he know about guns?
Why is your response to debate
The NRA indeed speaks for the millions who pony up our cash, select its leaders, selects its policy and wish it and our freedom well. People like you who say it doesn't speak for you are in favor of this sinister ascent of government at the expense of personal freedom.
C_D
Moveon.org? REALLY?? Like db says,"Who is Jerry Thompson?" Is he a member of Moveon.org? Does he even own a gun? Is he a member of the NRA? Was he a member of the NRA? Does he know what the NRA does? Does he know what he is talking about?
Learn to read and then weep, children! Quit being examples of the "dumbing down of America"-types.
The answers to your obviously dumb and whiney questions are right in front of you where indicated.
Or, click on the last line of the article I posted.
"Sigh!" (Eyes rolling.)
This is another example of the "responsible" gun ownership that I keep hearing gun advocates talking about. If all you "responsible" gun owners are keeping your guns "SAFE": why is it that kids keep shooting themselves with mom and/or dad's gun, shooting their friends with mom and/or dad's gun, bringing mom and or dad's guns to school or still attempting to "unknowingly" bring their guns of planes?
Don't equate me or the 80 +/- million other RESPONSIBLE firearms owners with the idiots of the world that do these things.
We decry accidents but understand freedom has a cost. Accidents like these happen; they happen seldom despite NBCNEWS screaming about them; there is a cost-benefit to everything in life. We implicity accept this. Otherwise people wouldn't use the airlines, they'd not go out at night, they'd not drive hundreds of miles on holiday weekends. The tiny risk of freedom is better than the smothering cost of slavery.
Mrs. Lanza and all gun owners think they are responsible. The evidence is otherwise
Kamaaina.. you troll. Go away..
My little Johnny is a good boy.. he ain't one of them gangbanger mofo's hangin down on the corner.
Of course, an 11 year old in the Bronx would NEVER be recruited by a local gang. We all know better than that.
But, I'll wait for some REAL information before making a decision.
Hope you're better little guy.
The biggest supporters of gun control, are criminals who commit crimes with guns. Their life is much easier if they do not have to worry about law abiding citizens have a gun of their own.
And those who love them, and those whose luxury life is off of their proceeds, and those foolish ones who get convinced that these criminals are Robin-Hoods or are folks making some sort of social statement.
Incorrect my friend ! So should we rubberize the world ? Baby proof everything... come on. If we have no guns then there are still knifes and explosives. No one ever thinks of the big picture just " Oh my god that's terrible" Factor. If our society didn't suck as a total there wouldn't be most violent events or neglagent actions.
And to the terd who thinks youngsters don't get recruited early, obviusly comes from a sheltered home. Most young people become runners at a young age. It's easy to desesseitise them to messed up events. Basic social psychology people. Read a book for once america !!
Big...
I find it interesting that you say "Incorrect my friend" and then go on to agree with what the poster originally said.
Further, you apparently can't grasp the sublities of sarcasm, so you refer another poster (me apparently, but that IS a supposition on my part) as a "terd"... which if I understand what you wanted to say should be spelled TURD.
Slow down, take a deep breath, before you reply and harangue someone, reread what has been posted and don't let your emotions cloud the thought process. We're all on the same side.
Sounds like propaganda to me ! Being of the moral compass that I am. It makes me think that everytime we have a big issue in america it shows up all over the TV. Now people were being neglagent with all types of harmful weapons along time before the media could report it !! It's like my grandfather said who was a navy intelligence officer for 25yrs. Things are not what they seem in every situatution. Come on America where did all your common sense go ?
The current moves by various legislatures to demonize, over-regulate and eventually end possession of firearms by the middle class alarms or should alarm all Americans. The media support given to these liberty-ending efforts amazes me because media such as NBCNEWS exists as free as it is today by virtue of the same instrument that recognizes freedom to bears arms. If NBCNEWS decided to publish some of the stuff it knows about the administration that would upset Obama, it would find out that in today's world, NBCNEWS would be silenced for some bizarre, made-up reason. But I wander from my point, the new guns laws being proposed.
These new laws do nothing to prevent another Newtown. They do nothing to disarm the urban gang-banners. They do everything to disarm the middle class. And probably for, in the eyes of the left, good reason.
Rights this country guarantees its citizens are under attack. Those rights concerned with the limits to imminent domain, freedom of speech, freedom of religion and protection from double jeopardy have suffered in the courts. As a child in school I was taught that the enumerated, natural rights of the individual trumps the powers of the state, period. I was taught that the bill of rights enumerates the rights of free people; it does not grant these rights; it merely documents what Providence has granted. I also was taught that the demi-geniuses that produced the constitution deliberately constructed it so that its meaning was clear to the men of its times just through the reading; no hidden nuances; no self-serving interpretations; no need to count the angels on the pin's head. It says what it means and it means what it says.
I have some notions about some of these background checks, prohibitions based on gadgetry and the like. Universal background checks purportedly ensure all firearms transactions go through the same mechanism new purchases go through now. Firearms dealers have the devices and communication lines to do this. These dealers already have stated they will charge substantial fees for this service. Like a poll tax on the 2nd amendment? Who gets to to pay these fees? Will the state? The department of Justice has already said these checks are pointless unless they are accompanied by universal registration of all gun owners.
I can't see a state or commonwealth encumbering exercise of an enumerated right more than Federal law does. For example, are Jim Crow laws, ruled illegal years ago still valid if the particular election is for the school board in some little Louisiana town? Of course not. Can Chicago, New York and the whole of New Jersey act as if recent Supreme Court decisions were never announced? It seems they can.
I meander, because this is supposed to be about gun control. Often some 'leader' tries to attack or lessen some or even all our rights, claiming to speak for or defend society. The Society so often adopted by these rogues is a faceless, non-taxpaying non-franchised concept few politicians can claim to speak for, unless in new-speak, 'society' is an alias for 'expediency'. The effective nullification of the 2nd amendment, my subject, is what I wanted to dwell on here. But another example we will hear more about these days (consistent with the state's continuing attempt to curb freedom) are the drones that can see and sense everything without regard to fences and doors. Should the right of the people to be secure in their person, houses, papers, etc. be trashed out of the expediency of finding some poor soul growing some weed?
In the past, America protected these rights and when some sought to deny rights to individuals, government ultimately acted even to the point of sending in the troops. Remember Ole Miss and Little Rock, anyone? This nation passed the 13th and 15th constitutional amendments ensuring the freed men would not have to pass a test, pay a fee or endure all the rest of the Jim Crow fetters the defeated South hung on them to keep them out of the polls. Yet America and New Jersey blandly encumbers the 2nd amendment rights with the same prior restraints the Klan put on the 13th. My feeling regarding private sales? If I own this gun, this watch, whatever, I have the right to dispose of it. That is not to say I can be imprudent and just toss a gun in the trash or sell it to someone who shouldn't have it like a drunk, a crook or a maniac. But if I own the thing, it's mine.
Banning guns because they look evil, are painted black or have various accessories or capacities is nothing than an effort to introduce the idea of 'good' guns and 'bad' guns into the discussion. It is merely a semantic trick introduced by the banner. He comes up with some rationale about a particular weapon, perhaps predicated on some outrage or tragedy. Then he rhetorically asks, “What sportsman wants one of these evil weapons of war?” A gun is a gun. They are all weapons of war, should war come. This scenario is the start of incremental banning of all firearms.
New York State's Governor Cuomo's new SAFE set of gun laws elects to ban so-called assault rifles and defines them by their accessories, like guns that have pistol grips, folding stocks and the like. But if an owner of one of these guns merely grinds off the offending bayonet mount, pistol grip, etc., and then drops what's left into a pretty walnut stock, the gun becomes legal in New York. But it's functionally identical to what it was before!
This incremental banning has happened in England and Australia. First they ban one type of weapon like the evil black rifle, and when this doesn't produce the promised result, they ban more 'types of guns. Automatic pistols usually follow; then perhaps revolvers, then repeating shotguns and so on and so on. The banners, when shown no desired results came from their initial prohibitions proceed on two fronts. First they extend the bans with the analogy, “If all the King's horses and all the King's men didn't get the job done, more horses and more men will work.” Second and more disingenuously they claim to work for society. Remember I mentioned the politician's society before? This incremental banning done in England and Australia ended up as a complete ban in both venues, the real desire of the banners. The inevitable side effect is an increase in crimes and shootings, demonstrated empirically in both venues. And the continuous barrage of lies says, “We respect your rights; this is to protect society! You'll be OK!”
Observe Joe Biden giving foolish advice to people who must, due to rural remoteness or urban danger, be their own first responders. He tells them to buy a double barreled shotgun. Double barreled shotguns cost bushels of money, and depending on one works only if the invaders limit their weaponry in kind. Joe Biden the man who when challenged by voters afraid of his long-term anti-gun stance in 2009, stated, “They're not going to take away my Beretta!”
Observe the unpleasant Senator Schumer on TV every Sunday running his inane press conferences. He loves camera lenses. He hates 4 out of the 5 categories he has put all guns into. Handguns he divides into two inclusive classes; cheap Saturday night specials or deadly cop-killer automatics. Long guns he divides into another two inclusive groups; deadly automatic assault rifles and long range sniper rifles. The fifth gun category he rarely mentions is the pistol he owns and carries wherever he goes. When these gun banners say they don't want to ban all guns they are not lying. They just want to ban our guns, not theirs.
Liberty, freedom, the ascent of the individual, being a free citizen is more risky than being the subject of some despot, benevolent or otherwise. The state, manifested as township, state or Federal government is naturally and constantly trying to increase its set of powers by attempts to limit individual freedom and rationalizes its incessant power grab by claiming it is for the good of society. But Liberty, freedom, the ascent of the individual is what this country ought to be about.
I am certain, considering how many other rights have been injured in my lifetime, that this anti-gun siege is neither about Newtown nor gang-bangers nor public safety nor even about guns. It is about social control. I fear those in power have some change in store for us that they won't dare implement until the average person is disarmed. Like anyone who understands government, I fear government, and I fear most those who reject individual liberty for my own good.
I've written too many words, and these words are disorganized but I hope to find someone who will at least listen.
I'm sure you've heard much of this before; it reads like arguments we've gotten into at college and the like. But I think we should reject the notion of anyone regarding the constitution as merely symbolic because its contents prevent their plans.
NBC news jumped the shark a long time ago. They are nothing more than a pawn of the Democratic party.
@TOM343
It seems Chicago can't after all! Chicago's (Illinois') appeal to the recent court ruling allowing concealed carry was just turned down!!
New York City's appeal was also turned down. So Mewling Mayor Mike, with poor grace, sets up some sort of task force to implement what he must. And the force apparently is peopled with people from Greenwood Cemetery, because nothing more was heard of it. Chicago will come up with something else equally obstructive, because the big wigs there simply will not relinquish control, and that's was this gun nonsense is really about. Not guns, not safety, not Newtown, just control. These wretched leaders will not trust we, their subjects.
Wow, if they followed Joe Biden's advice, and bought a shot gun.....that little boy would have to be scooped up with a shovel....thank GOD they didn't
It must be hell being a so-called journalist, and being told what to write, and what not to write. Puppets, all of you, just like the one at the White House,
This is typical reporting when it comes to gun issues. MSN deliberately posts these kinds of stories to provoke irresponsible statements on both sides of the argument! Just to keep the issue in the news! The police know how the boy was shot. And it's not like MSN has to make a request under the Freedom of Information Act to get the story!
It's jut a way to keep their agenda going!!
Joe Biden (the drunk uncle at the party) proved by his "get a double barreled shotgun and go out and shoot both barrels. They won't want to come in". Do you realize that's was an invite to do as you please? That person, by firing both barrels, just disarmed themselves. Uncle Joe needs to learn when is a good time to talk. this clown is suppose to be our leader. He's learning well from his Boss.LOL
To all of you blaming the parents:
One of the two boys is 11 years old. 11 year old kids in the BRONX have been and will continue to be recruited by street scum gangs.
It IS possible, that the parents don't even know how the gun got in the house in the first place.
How about this as a logical sensible tentative solution. Hold comments about responsibility until the "responsible" party is identified.
If it turns out the kid brought in the gun and the PC point cannot be made, the story will sink into the news grave-yard. Sometimes it is to the advantage of those in power to squelch the facts. I can think of the December 26 isssue of Newsweek. I read it in a doctor's office recently. No it did not cover the Hindenburg; for a doctor's office it was pretty new. What stuck in my mind was it's narrative about Newtown. It stated that Lanza did his evil with handguns. This conflicts with much of what we hear today. It is interesting that the State Police has gone on record that anyone that issues statements conflicting with the official spin on this tragedy does so at risk of some felony conviction. Is Newsweek going to be prosecuted? Is there to be soon anaother Peter Zenger trial?
XD, while we don't know for sure, your story could be very well likely! If it were true and MSN knew it, the story would not have the same "shock" value. I trust very little that MSN reports unless it is confirmed by an independent source!
By the way, I see from your user ID that you are a "Springfield" fan! Just bought an XDs myself!
@Tom343
You are exactly correct!! In fact, I read a report that police in fact found the AR-15 tupe weapon in the shooter's trunk and that it was NOT used! That report was never corrected, it was just squashed! What really disgusts me about this is that someone's initial thoughts when this tragedy happened was not about the victims; it was about an agenda!!
Moto..
Very much so. I actually traded off one of the Glocks I own and am thinking of selling off the others as well. I like the safety features built into the Springfield line much better. Plus they are, at least to me, much more comfortable when holding at either a ready or fire position.
I'll likely keep my original glock, as it IS one of the original first ones in the country, but the others will likely disappear.
And the accuracy out of the box has been exceptional with every one.
So, how many whiney gun-goobers blamed the parent/mother of the psycho-shooter of Newtown, Ct?
Quite a lot, from what I remember. Lots of said gun-goobers also whined she deserved to die at the hands of said psycho-shooter son!
Hmmm...!
Stupid is as stupid does. LOCK UP your guns!
I fear you draw a conclusion from facts not in evidence. Speculation is that the gun might have been either the parent's or it might have been the older kid's. And by the way, if you seek protection from use of your gun (especially in the Bronx) will you get this protection if it is locked up in one safe unloaded and its ammunition is locked up in some other safe?
TIM, see post #42! You just proved my point!
@TIM.
The father had his guns locked up! And yes, stupid is as stupid does. Looking at your post proves that. You weren't there, I wasn't there, and there was no info in the article about where the gun was, who owned it, who pulled the trigger, etc etc.
But here is Tim, the dullest bulb in the chandler with his huge statement about locking up guns, when the guns were perhaps locked up.
Tom pay attention now. No conclusion draw. Don't be a moron and read what I wrote. Lock up your guns after you buy them. If you need protection from them make sure they are secure not where kids can get to them. The gun was from somewhere and some stupid person did not have the sense to secure it properly. Or, yes, from some bad guy that got the gun illegally.
Moro I don't know, or care, where post #42 is and don't know, or care, what your point is positive or negative.
Secure your firearms....that all no conclusions. Not looking for a fight or argument or insults. Secure your firearms!
Sally Ann, pay attention now and see the above response to Tom. You enjoy insulting people and reading between the lines. Some stupid person allowed this firearm to get into, the hands of a child. Did not say I was there. Pay attention. Sit in the front row of the classroom from now on. There we have insulted each other wasn't that great?
None of us here, least of all Tim-1419381 has the right to attempt to be patronizing or condescending. A little class please.
The new agenda since Newtown. Put a gun story on every day. How a story about a new welfare fraud case by an illegal alien every day or a crime committed by an alien Obama wants to make a citizen. I'm still waiting for the press to admit Adam Lanza didn't use his mother's assault weapons, he entered the school with 4 pistols.
Good point Denis. I also would like to add, it would be nice to see the articles written about the stories of proper defense of citizens using firearms to save their or other lives. I read them regularly in American Rifleman.
80+ million gun owners. 300+ million guns. It's pure luck that there aren't more stories like this. The media needs to keep gun violence on the front page. When the people finally have had enough there will be change.
National RIFLE Association. Don't tell me it isn't all about guns.
If you would, see post #35.2
That's the best you can muster?
"We have met the enemy and he is us."
So tell me why that makes news but surely somewhere someone used a gun properly in self defense yesterday but the media doesn't bother with that guess their following right along with their bestest friends in gov't!!!
Where was the armed guard in that kids bedroom?
C'mon LaPierre, you are becoming a wuss. We need you man, lobby harder for us gun crazed folks. I'm starting to doubt myself--fell asleep without cradling my gun last night. Help me!! Maybe my ex-wife was right?
Irresponsible gun storage. Plain and simple. Nice parenting.
Wow Matt! I wish I were clairvoyant like you ! I could solve problems before they even occur! Like your post!!
Not one word about how a child had access to this loaded not locked up weapon? Seriously?
If you gratuitously assume his folks were careless I will gratuitously assume he bought the gun in some back alley and wanted to off his brother.
Yes I was momentarily being sarcastic. . All guns are banned in NY; just like all toy guns are dangerous if they are not marked to show they are a toy. Toy guns are used in crimes and as they look real, the situation feels real and it also is dangerous for police as they believe the weapon to be real so they end up shooting an unarmed person.
