Suspect identified in deadly Vegas Strip shooting

This photo provided by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department shows Ammar Harris in a booking photo from a 2012 arrest in Las Vegas. Police have identified Harris as a suspect in a shooting that sent a Maserati into a taxi that exploded, killing three people on Feb. 21, 2013 in Las Vegas.

Police have identified a suspect in an early morning shooting and pileup that killed three people and injured at least six on Las Vegas' famous Strip Thursday, NBC affiliate KSNV reported.

Police are seeking Ammar Harris, 26, in the shooting and subsequent car crashes that occurred in a section of the Strip that includes Caesars Palace, Bally’s and the Bellagio.

The shooting came after the occupants of a black Range Rover and a Maserati got into an altercation in the valet area of the Aria hotel and casino, according to Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie.

“We have numerous witnesses to this,” Las Vegas Police Sgt. John Sheahan said. “But what is the genesis of this? We don’t know yet.”

The suspect was in the Range Rover, while 27-year-old aspiring rapper Kenny “Clutch” Cherry of Oakland, Calif., was at the wheel of the Maserati.

According to reports, the Range Rover pulled up and allegedly opened fire into the Maserati near a stoplight in the pre-dawn hours. A passenger was injured by the gunfire and Cherry was killed, causing the car to spin out of control. The careening silver Maserati smashed into a taxicab, trapping the passenger and driver and causing the cab to burst into flames; both occupants were killed, police said.

In a scene witnesses describe as looking like a Hollywood set, a confrontation between a group of men escalated into a shooting, multiple vehicle pileup, and an exploding taxicab. The incident left three people dead. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

Then, the Maserati smashed into three other cars before coming to a stop.

The taxi driver was identified as Michael Boldon, 62, of Las Vegas. His passenger was Sandra Sutton-Wasmund, 48, of Maple Valley, Wash. She was a two-time breast cancer survivor. Both died of "multiple blunt force injuries," the coroner's office said.

All three deaths were classified as homicide.

Police released a photo that was taken when Harris was arrested last year on pandering, kidnapping, sexual assault and coercion charges, according to The Associated Press.

KSNV reported that police did not find Harris at his residence Saturday, but the black Range Rover was found just a few blocks away from the intersection where the violent incident occurred.

Police also said they found shell casings in Harris's apartment that linked him to Cherry's death.

NBC News' Matthew DeLuca and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Surely the city fathers of Las Vegas don't want pimps and drug peddlers shooting it out with each other right on the Strip. [The other vehicle was a super luxury sports car which I doubt was paid for by working a nine to five job.]

Look for a crackdown on prostitution in the city and a much more aggressive enforcement of drug laws. Illegal drugs and prostitution go together like gambling and loansharking.

What happened in Vegas won't happen again.

And I saw the movie ET but I don't think I will be seeing any short aliens with light up fingers that can make bicycles fly anytime soon, yes the mob was heavily invested in Vegas but the Justice department, the FBI and state and local law enforcement has ben working on that problem for a long time.

Every dope peddler and pimp will be run off the Vegas Strip so roughly he won't come back. Not one will escape no matter how deep a hole he crawls in. Clark County and the State of Nevada have lots of good men to do the job and that's what they're good at.

PS: The Jewish and Italian mobsters knew that violence is bad for business. When they turned a stagecoach stop called Las Vegas into an entertainment mecca they declared it neutral territory and decreed no conflicts could be carried out there--a decree that held up though the mob is long gone until two days ago.

...Well, they let him go last time. Most people rate bail... but some offenders are definitely a howling menace to society... But too often the standard is not the laundry list of what they were arrested for... but only if they are deemed likely to show up for trial... Of course a great many of those deemed so worthy never show... which keeps bounty hunters in business...

Seems to be a trend going on nationwide, in Vegas, and the hotbed of gangs, Chicago. I tend to think it might be an effective process for ridding ourselves of these slimebags, were it not for the innocent victims caught in the crossfire. Obama and his handmaiden Eric Holder continue to ignore it, instead waging war of their own on the "non-minority" citizens of this nation. One of many ironies at play in the land now.

Those that refuse to uphold our existing laws now tell us.

A criminal with a gun is a CRIMINAL. Criminal means not obeying the laws. More laws are supposed to help stop that?

Just go buy a old double barrel shotgun, and if you see someone outside your house, go outside and fire both barrels to scare them away. That is what our Vice President says.

Too bad in many areas that will land you in jail, and in all areas you will be out of ammo and a sitting duck for any real criminals.

Lam, the one feeds on the other.

It may be somewhat irrational but the good citizens of places like Newtown buy all these weapons legally just in case Mr. Ammar or those of his ilk decide to come a-callin'. Then they figure they might as well get familiar with all that firepower so they set up practice ranges and a few even bring their teenagers. Bad idea, as we now know.

All this talk about gun control and how an armed citizen being present may have prevented this incident or even stopped it is a bit of a reach. This incident began and ended in such a short time frame that the average person could never comprehend what was he was actually seeing and react or intervene in time to do anything. Those of you who express opinions that someone who witnessed the incident could have made a difference once it started have obviously never been never been involved in or witnessed violent incidents like this. If you haven't been there, done that, you do not have a clue.

This incident is the result of the erosion of our American culture among other things. It is the result of individuals whose entire adult life is a criminal venture and generally not a mentally impaired condition. You can rest assured that the shooter did not or would not have submitted himself for a background check to purchase a firearm and even if he did it would not have been approved based on his criminal history.

In cases like this the only way it could have been prevented is through the criminal justice system which is failing this entire country. Catch and release should only be used for fishing, not criminal misconduct. Once an arrest is made is a good time to do background checks and mental evaluations to identify those most likely in a pattern to cause harm to the community in the future. Place that data in the NCIC record system and all local and state law enforcement records much like sex offenders and gang members currently are.

And adopt nationwide or federal statutes eliminating both prosecutorial and judicial discretion when dealing with crimes involving violent and especially deadly weapons, regardless of the type of weapon. Commit a crime, do the time, Commit a crime with a deadly, do hard time with mandatory minimum sentences. All the sentencing factors considered like wetting the bed when they were young or the entire family is poor or dysfunctional should not have any bearing if the suspect shoots, stabs, or injures innocent people during the course of his criminal misconduct.

I wish we could keep race out of this issue. I have known people of several skin colors that I trusted my life with.

Sadly I have also known some who used their skin color to justify being a so called victim.

Where are the victims now? The President is black. Hispanic are in Congress.

Some still try to use the old white trash thing.

I have believed for a long time that it all comes down to if you are a good person, or a bad person. Skin color has nothing to do with it.

If I had good guys with guns standing at my side the last thing I would be worried about is their skin color.

Playing the race card is just another way to divide us.

The Second Amendment Foundation today won a significant victory for concealed carry when the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals let stand a December ruling by a three-judge panel of the court that forces Illinois to adopt a concealed carry law, thus affirming that the right to bear arms exists outside the home.

The ruling came in Moore v. Madigan, a case filed by SAF. The December opinion that now stands was written by Judge Richard Posner, who gave the Illinois legislature 180 days to “craft a new gun law that will impose reasonable limitations, consistent with the public safety and the Second Amendment…on the carrying of guns in public.” That clock is ticking, noted SAF Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb.

“Illinois lawmakers need to create some kind of licensing system or face the prospect of not having any regulations at all when Judge Posner’s deadline arrives,” Gottlieb said. “They need to act. They can no longer run and hide from this mandate.”

“We were delighted with Judge Posner’s ruling in December,” he continued, “and today’s decision by the entire circuit to allow his ruling to stand is a major victory, and not just for gun owners in Illinois. Judge Posner’s ruling affirmed that the right to keep and bear arms, itself, extends beyond the boundary of one’s front door.”

In December, Judge Posner wrote, “The right to ‘bear’ as distinct from the right to ‘keep’ arms is unlikely to refer to the home. To speak of ‘bearing’ arms within one’s home would at all times have been an awkward usage. A right to bear arms thus implies a right to carry a loaded gun outside the home.”

Judge Posner subsequently added, “To confine the right to be armed to the home is to divorce the Second Amendment from the right of self-defense described in Heller and McDonald.”

“It is now up to the legislature,” Gottlieb said, “to craft a statute that recognizes the right of ordinary citizens to carry outside the home, without a sea of red tape or a requirement to prove any kind of need beyond the cause of personal protection.”

The ruling also affects a similar case filed by the National Rifle Association known as Shepard v. Madigan.

Twenty state attorneys general have filed an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in support of the Second Amendment Foundation’s petition for a Writ of Certiorari in a case challenging New York’s gun permitting statute, along with several other interested parties that have filed their own briefs.

The case is known as Kachalsky v. Cacace and was argued before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. SAF is represented by attorney Alan Gura, who won both the Heller and McDonald Second Amendment cases before the Supreme Court.

“We are delighted at the support being shown by attorneys general in Alaska, Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, Nebraska, New Mexico and 13 other states, and particularly for the leadership of Virginia Attorney General Kenneth Cuccinelli in bringing them all together,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb. “This case is all about an individual’s right to carry a firearm outside the home for personal protection, and it is gratifying to see so much support.”

In addition to the brief filed by the attorneys general, supporting amicus briefs have also been filed by the Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence represented by former Attorney General Edwin Meese III, the National Rifle Association represented by former Solicitor General Paul D. Clement, plus the American Civil Rights Union, Academics for the Second Amendment, Cato Institute, the Second Amendment Preservation Association, New Jersey Second Amendment Society and Commonwealth Second Amendment, Inc.

“This is an important case,” Gottlieb said, “and that’s why so many parties are interested and supportive of our issue.”

SAF and the five individual plaintiffs are challenging whether the state can arbitrarily restrict the Second Amendment right to bear arms outside the home by requiring people to prove a special need to the satisfaction of a government official.

“Our case is about equal protection and the arbitrary authority of government officials to essentially decide on a whim whether average citizens can have the means of self-defense outside the confines of their home,” Gottlieb said. “Most crimes happen away from the home, and it is in public places and on public streets where a citizen is most likely to encounter a life-threatening situation where he or she might have to defend themselves.”

The battlefield is already there and now in those states that make it almost impossible for law abiding citizens to protect themselves the battlefield consists of criminals with guns and law abiding citizens without them.

Speak for yourself. Look up the regulations for gun ownership in the little hamlet of Chiloquin, Oregon. It's a very peaceful place.

Oregon is an open carry must issue state, State regulations can not be preempted by local regulations except a local jurisdiction can require a person who carries to have a concealed carry permit, The hamlet of Chiloquin is 3800 people. Not sure what your comment about Chiloquin was supposed to prove.

Chiloquin has an ordinance that requires all heads of households to own a firearm and the ammo to use it. Chiloquin does not enforce this ordinance
