Dallas firefighters were called to the Dallas Zoo after a malfunction stranded 93 people on a monorail.

Dallas Fire-Rescue was called to the scene at about 3:30 p.m.

Fortunately, the monorail stopped at a location that was easily reached by firefighters.  Using as many as five extension ladders, firefighters were able to remove all of the trapped passengers from the monorail in about a half hour.

Shortly after 4 pm., NBC 5 reporter Chris Van Horne tweeted on @NBCDFW that, "I count at least 10 @dfrincidents trucks and ambulances here @DallasZoo still no sight of monorail though."

There were no injuries in connection with the malfunction or rescue.

There's been no comment about the incident from the zoo, and the cause of the malfunction has not been determined.

I did not know Dallas had a monorail...and a zoo! Thanks for the news! Look Ma...Dallas has people who go to a zoo with a monorail! I thought they lived in 18th century or something.

Dallas has a wonderful zoo, but I did not know about a monorail system.

Wonder who will file the first law suit?

Road ... Lee ... Jen. And yet you read it, gave it enough attention to decide it isn't worthwhile and then still commented on it. I'd say NBCNews.com accomplished what they set out to accomplish.

Sounds like the monorail in Ogdenville or North Haverbrook. And if you get that reference, I'm impressed.

Well said JB. I read this story with interest as it is a light news story and those are interesting as well. Then I saw the comment section and thought I will just go read and see how they would spin President Obama in the story. I wasn't disappointed. There they were. Only took to the forth comment. What a bunch of RWNJ's. This past week there were no fewer than three totally made up stories trying to bring down democrats. Even one trying to bring down the republican nominee for SOD! I don't know about many progressives here, but I for one can never believe another right wing republican again. It is my hope the sane ones will finally put an end to the lying SOS's! Don't like MSN.com? Please do us all a favor and go to your beloved Foxnews.com and read the same articles and comment on how well Fox is doing. I would say that MSN did well what their business model is. Putting eyeballs on the advertising, whether you look at them or not.

The dallas zoo used to be the best one in my experience, not any more. Zookeepers have decided that the old type zoos were inhumane and I suppose they're right but why even have a zoo if the only way you can see the animals is on tv? Pay attention liberals. You may as well watch a public tv channel and leave the critters alone.

By the way, complainers, would you be happier if several people had died?

When I was last there it was 98 degrees with 80% humidity at 8pm. Didn't see the zoo.

      Thankfully everyone's ok.

What an adventure, to say the least! I bet they won't be selling tickets for that specific adventure again soon. However, I wonder on the other hand, if the animals had a delightful time, perhaps the monkeys?

After being stared at, pointed to by tens of thousands of men, women, teenagers and little babes, perhaps this is a overdue fresh interesting diversion for a change.

I keep hearing the music from Disney's animated Jungle Book film, "Look for the Bear necessities!" Hope the ride gets fixed quick so children can get back to enjoying the view of all the wonderful lions, tigers and "bears" oh my!

That's why trains usually have two rails - one for backup

The Dallas zoo is a pretty nice zoo. The monorail is sort of 'meh' if you're into that sort of thing. If you want more excitement, go out to DFW Airport and ride the Airtrans system. It can stop anywhere along the way, and it gets pretty isolated out there in the jumble of buildings, roads and parking lots. It's still not as bad as the baggage handling system at DIA, though. Glad nobody jumped.

I love how the media makes a big something out of nothing. Did anyone notice that the reporter (on the broadcast) stated that there were "scary moments" or some-such? What scary moments? He never mentioned them. The people sat on a train and got off on ladders. Big whoop.

I'll bet the monorail is gas powered and the zoo couldn't afford the gas to keep it running. See what happens when ohbumma gets involved in energy? Even Texas is feeling the high price of hope & change...

          Remember that next election!!!

            Reply#11 - Sun Feb 24, 2013 11:35 AM EST

Rick, your comment is moronic. Energy development has increased manyfold since Obama took office. Demand is down 2-3%. The reason gas prices are high is due to the Commodities Futures Modernization Trading Act of 2000; aka Graham Leech Bliley Act, pushed by Bill Clinton and Jamie Rubin. We saw $7 billion traded in oil futures that year, but 2007 the figure jumped to $300b/yr. Today, that's even higher, oil speculation has started earlier and risen more sharply this year than any before. This is part and parcel of the "unfettered markets" dreck that you no doubt support. You, rather have partisan blinders on, and don't see the truth. Want to stop this, re-empower the Commodities Futures Trading Commission to review trades--as they did for decades. They simply check trades against supply and demand, discarding groundless bets. Further, raising cap gains would penalize some of this speculation, and liquidation of capital; and would turn investment horizons to longer time horizons. High cap gains reward depreciation of capital, thus capital intensive producers. Rather, our low tax rates encourage speculation, liquidation of capital, executive profligacy and encouraged cap lite production, or a service economy.

I've had this happen to me at a different zoo. The problem is not just waiting for rescue. The problem was this is an enclosed plastic bubble and when the power went off so did the air exchange system and then enter the solar heating from a summer day. Within MINUTES it was very uncomfortable and after 45 minutes most of us barely had the energy to walk off this thing on our own. We had our 15 month old daughter and used our only water bottle to pour on her bald head and give her sips. You can all be smart a$$es until this happens to YOU!

it would be something if something like a scene from Jurassic park happened and animals were able to over run the mono rail....now that would be news.

I was thinking the same thing. Not that I'm looking for vicarious thrills, but being stuck, say, over the lions and having them jumping up trying to get at the passengers. Wasn't there a movie about kids stuck on a ski lift after a power outage and no staff to save them? Something along those lines would make a great movie. That said, I'm glad no one was hurt.

YandMand, no one got hurt. They all got their admission to the zoo refunded. Why would anyone sue and on what grounds? Please get a life. It can be fun at times.

Really Terry? Who got hurt? They all got their admission refunded so they got a free day at the zoo. Mechanical machinery breaks down from time to time. I just wonder if it was the unions that built the thing shoddily. Wait, it was 23 years ago and oh yeah, it is a "right to work" state, so no unions involved.
