Colorado snowstorm triggers blizzard warnings, slows air traffic

The Weather Channel's Kim Cunningham gives the latest on the snowstorm that blanketed Colorado.

DENVER — A wind-driven snowstorm blanketed eastern Colorado on Sunday, creating blizzard conditions on the High Plains and prompting the cancellation of 200 flights in and out of Denver International Airport, authorities said.

The Denver metropolitan area was under a winter weather warning, with blowing snow and up to 10 inches of snow possible for the city, National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Kalina said.

The mountains and areas near Colorado's Wyoming and Nebraska borders were under winter weather advisories, the weather service said.

The Western region got pummeled while New England dodged what weather system forecasters had feared would become a major snowstorm for the third consecutive weekend.

The New England storm blew further east and left much of the region coping only with a slushy mix on Sunday.

Boston's Logan airport reported only minor delays, except for flights to storm-socked Denver, and major regional utilities NStar and National Grid reported only scattered outages.

The snow was a welcome sight for farms in eastern Colorado, which has been in the grip of a multi-year drought.

Areas south and east of Denver on the plains were under a blizzard warning until 11 p.m. local time (1:00 am EST Monday) with steady snowfall and high winds forecast throughout the day, the weather service said.

About 200 flights out of Denver International Airport were canceled, spokeswoman Laura Coale said.

The airport remained open but travelers could expect delays of up to two hours as crews de-iced departing aircraft and plowed the runways, Coale said. The airport typically handles about 1,500 flights on any Sunday.

A deep, low-pressure system near the Four Corners borders of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah had stalled, dumping heavy snow in eastern Colorado, the weather service's Kalina said.

"That setup makes it a snow event mostly for areas east of the Continental Divide," Kalina said.

Nearly a foot (30 cm) of snow had fallen in the foothills west of Denver by early afternoon, he said.

No road closures were in effect, although roads were snow packed and icy throughout the state, said Mindy Crane, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

A snow plow was involved in an accident with another vehicle near Empire, putting the motorist in the hospital, she said.

The storm front was forecast to move southeast out of Colorado and into the Texas panhandle by Monday, the weather service said.

We finally get some measurable snow in Denver and now we are "storm-socked Denver"?

It is the mile-high city and we are supposed to have some winter weather.

You guys complain if it gets reported. You complain if it doesn't get reported.

Why don't you just read what you want, ignore the rest and get a life instead of complaining about bullcrap.

    Thank God for global warming

Denver covers less than a tenth of one percent of the planet, it is not the entire globe.

Or do you believe as long as there is a snow storm somewhere on the planet global warming must be a lie?

I wonder how President Obama must be feeling now about climate change! Mentioning it in his 2nd inaugural address on 21.1.2013 was opportunistic and designed to please the alarmists and the gullible. His speechwriter should have consulted the UN's climate change chief, Rajendra Pachauri before giving it to the president, to read it out to the world.

The President said "We, the people, we will respond to the threat of climate change….."

Last Thursday on the other side of the world in Melbourne Australia, the climate change chief Rajendra

"has acknowledged a 17-year pause in global temperature rises, confirmed recently by Britain's Met Office, but said it would need to last "30 to 40 years at least" to break the long-term global warming trend.

Dr Pachauri, the chairman of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said that open discussion about controversial science and politically incorrect views was an essential part of tackling climate change.

In a wide-ranging interview on topics that included this year's record northern summer Arctic ice growth, the US shale-gas revolution, the collapse of renewable energy subsidies across Europe and the faltering European carbon market, Dr Pachauri said no issues should be off-limits for public discussion.

In Melbourne for a 24-hour visit to deliver a lecture for Deakin University, Dr Pachauri said that people had the right to question the science, whatever their motivations." Etc. etc

To date $ Billions have been spent worldwide tackling climate change, with very little to show for it. I would not be at all surprised if president Obama conveniently sidestepped his inaugural speech climate change promise and focused on something more "pressing".

Too bad they can't just shut down NREL here in Colorado. Another waste of tax payer dollars. They should aim the sequester right at that. It's produced nothing but million dollar scientists and failed technology.

What that statement shows is you know NOTHING about climate change or climate science. One person disagreeing with the overwhelming majority of climate scientist doesn't mean it's not happening.

Charlie….there is enough evidence to suggest that the Climate warming, Global warming, Climate change, call it what you will hype, has been nothing but a money grab by the UN and western world governments. The historical data and statistics were fudged and manipulated to suit peddlers of “doom and gloom” and to spook people so that they part with their hard earned cash to save the world.

Climate change is a natural phenomenon that has been occurring ever since the Earth came into being.

Hank.......When you were made to believe that due to climate warming snowfalls are a thing of the past, that Himalayan glaciers will disappear, the North and South Poles will be bare of ice and there will be no more rain, then my comments and the Colorado snowstorm story suddenly gain relevance.

            #4.5 - Sun Feb 24, 2013 6:09 PM EST

I always find it funny that people will call climate science is a conspiracy for evil scientists to get rich off the government, but totally ignore the fact that the REAL money is made in denying it... How much money does the oil industry stand to make by perpetuating baseless denialism? A whole lot more than real scientists are getting paid, that's for sure!

That said, I'll smack anyone that blames any one storm on global warming.

We had a severe drought in the Midwest during the 20th century called the Dust Bowl. A drought and other weather conditions made it a plague for farmers in the Midwest. One of the results that came out of the severe , regional "earth change" was better crop selection and rotation , to prevent the massive soil erosion that occurred.

We are experiencing global weather change , for whatever the reasons. Less ice in the Arctic region is resulting in talks of a new lane of travel and land disputes between nations on valuable resources there. Water surges in the Northeast now show the need for new infrastructure needed to prevent water surge. Are the deniers just going to keep up their mantra and start offering help for these problems, whatever the cause?

The last blast was just a few days ago, and the roads have been clear now for a day and a half. This next storm front pushing in the lower plains region looks even nastier than the last. Winds in excess of 50 mph gusts and heavy whiteout conditions at times. Snow totals in some areas could hit another 15 inches with heavy drifting and possible power outages. The downtown small businesses where booming with consumers buying supplies, stocking up on food, and fueling their vehicles to prepare for the upcoming possible blizzard of 2013.

On a different note: While many dread these treacherous storms many, who have experienced hardships due to the 3 year drought, welcome this moisture with open arms. The creek beds are dry, rivers creeping a trickle here and there, ponds evaporated and their bellies cracked out, native grasses eaten to the core and the aquifer dropping by the foot at an alarming rate. Please let it snow, rain and sleet until the ground soaks it up good, then after another week of drying out let it do it again.

Guess if they would spend a year or two in the mid west or the PNW, they would realize how things are done. It is winter, and snow does happen that time of the year. We get a couple of feet in the higher elevations, you never hear about it like you do when the east coast gets 10" of snow.

Sure glad I don't live back there. Visited back there once, during the summer, talk about being humid days and evenings. Uck, don't know if that's normal or not, but they can have it, along with the foreign language they speak.
