NEW YORK -- Firefighters subdued a man they witnessed attacking a woman with a meat cleaver on the street Sunday, police said.
Members of the FDNY company known as the Chinatown Dragon Fighters saw the man attacking the woman across the street from their station house on Canal Street and intervened, according to police.
"I heard a commotion in the street and I look over, its a man dragging this woman, grabbing her by the arm, dragging her, she's crying and she's screaming," said firefighter Jose Ortiz.
Ortiz rushed over to help the woman, when suddenly he saw the man pull out the meat cleaver.
"I see the cleaver go up and he swings down and he hit her in the head," Ortiz said. "Now I'm thinking I gotta grab this guy."
But before Ortiz could get to him, the man was able to strike the woman with the meat cleaver several times.
Shane Clarke, another firefighter, came to Ortiz's aid and together they were able to stop the attack and subdue the man.
The woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital with cuts to her neck, back and face. Police said her injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The man was taken into police custody.
"I'm happy that we were there to help," Ortiz said. "I'm sorry we weren't there early enough to just stop the whole thing altogether."

OMG, now I have to start buying meat cleavers to protest government intervention! I just can't win, GOD help us all if they start regulating automobile use. Take the steak knives not the cleaver, we all need some good cleaver now and then. Hmmm, I wonder if anyone will blame the cleaver heaver and not the cleaver itself. WELL DUH!!!

Let's not forget lawnmowers. They are about to start up for spring and they murder poor helpless grass every day. Funny how we never hear about the pain and agony that blades of grass go through. After all, grass is a living thing and feel pain too. Heaven forbid those weed trimmer things should show up. They have no mercy and tear blades of grass rather than clean cut them. Can you imagine the sheer pain and misery grass go through because of weed trimmers? Oh my, I think I need something to help me relax and cope with this tragedy placed upon poor helpless grass.
De DO Dah Duh. I dont think that our Politicians will limit the use of Automobiles, BUT Seriously, they are talking about TAXING YOU on the Mileage that you put on your Automobile. If they do that, we will have to have a Rebellion never seen in the United States.

These were firefighters not police. They don't carry guns!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here in Wyoming we'd have shot his ass!
That's it! Obama needs to have these meat cutting implements registered. Meat Cleavers should be banned as they are larger than they need to be for meat cutting purposes. This way the mentally deranged will not have access to these dangerous cleavers.

Thank God for the firefighters that came to this woman's defense. Hopefully, the victim will have a full and speedy recovery.

Did this weapon have a large high capacity blade or was it the smaller one.? How many victims could it kill with one strike of the blade? Was it a legal cleaver or was it one of the banned cleavers? Bloomberg needs to ban all cleavers in NY except those used to cut meat.If he knows the difference between a meat cleaver and a gun,which I doubt....

To be legal though, a cleaver cannot cut more than 10 round steaks or have a pistol grip.

better go buy a meat cleaver while you still can. congress is going into talks about passing new meat cleaver laws, limiting the length & sharpness of the blade. they are trying to focus mainly on assault cleavers but realize it will be difficult to get all owners to register over-sized cleavers. the FBI database is still working on annual fatalities related to assault cleaver attacks. hope barack omoron can get this under control before it gets into more cities.
