Jodi Arias set to be grilled on stand in murder trial

Tom Tingle / The Arizona Republic via AP

Prosecutor Juan Martinez asks defendant Jodi Arias a question about her diary during cross examination testimony in Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix.

Jodi Arias resumes testimony Monday in her Arizona murder trial after the start of a withering cross-examination last week by a prosecutor working to poke holes in her numerous stories.

She is charged in the June 2008 stabbing and shooting death of her lover in his suburban Phoenix home. Arias claims self-defense, while authorities say she planned the attack on Travis Alexander in a jealous rage. Testimony has been ongoing since early January.

Arias, 32, lost a bid last week aimed at getting a reprieve from a potential death sentence if convicted of first-degree murder after the Arizona Supreme Court swiftly denied her motion that claimed a detective committed perjury in the case. Her attorneys have filed multiple motions for mistrials, all of which have been denied.

She was set to resume testimony Monday for her 10th day on the witness stand.

Last week, prosecutor Juan Martinez hammered Arias with intense questioning about her inability to recall crucial details in the case, yet noted it was puzzling that she can remember "what kind of coffee you bought at Starbucks sometime back in 2008."

Arias smirked at times while Martinez stammered in frustration, and the judge admonished both to stop talking over each other as the questioning grew heated and the two traded barbs.

Martinez resumes his cross-examination Monday likely continuing to focus on Arias' repeated lies.

Arias first told authorities she knew nothing about Alexander's death, then later blamed it on masked intruders before eventually settling on self-defense.

She said she was scared of being arrested, had been contemplating suicide and didn't want to sully Alexander's name with accounts of his violent behavior and lurid details of their sexual relationship, given his public persona as a devout Mormon who was saving himself for marriage.

Of the day she killed Alexander, Arias says she remembers him in a rage, body slamming her and chasing her around his home.

She said she grabbed a gun from his closet, and fired it as they tussled, but didn't know if she hit him. She had no explanation for the 27 stab and slash wounds he suffered, or his slit throat, or how he ended up stuffed in his shower.

According to court records, however, she previously told police before her trial began that Alexander was unconscious after she shot him, but then "crawled around and was stabbed."

She says she remembers putting a knife in the dishwasher and disposing of the gun in the desert as she drove from Arizona on her way to Utah. And she immediately began planning an alibi.

Arias' grandparents reported a .25 caliber handgun stolen from their Northern California house about a week before the killing — the same caliber used to shoot Alexander — but Arias claims to know nothing about the burglary. She says she brought no weapons to Alexander's home on the day she killed him, undercutting the prosecution's theory of premeditation.

Shot him then stabbed him multiple times?! Self defense?!

Call the dam cops man... If you did things correctly, the cops would have done it for you...

Agreed ...Granted the house would have looked like a bunch of monkeys on crack were let loose with Uzis and a few neighbors, trees, cacti, cars, dogs, cats, and everything else in the vicinity would have been full of hole's as well........but hey, that's what their there for....protection.

Maybe she stabbed him once for every time he gave her anal sex ? But forgot about it?

The pig has already been trapped with so many lies. She said when a guy yells at her, she forgets, but when Travis yelled, she screwed him and her memory came back and she remembered EVERYTHING. Maybe the state should get someone to screw her and she will remember while be questioned. But, she can not prove one thing she has said. It is all her own story and no back ups. Travis's friends never, not one time saw anything. Not one time did she ever tell anyone about any of this, not even a close friend. Her stupid finger, she can stick up her a.. And, she can not really explain why she kept going back to Travis. She only kept texts, photos that would benefit her. She probably was pissed because he was going to cancun with some one else, that he was moving on. She probably showed up at his house without an invite. SHE SAID THEY HAD SEX three times. Twice was to calm him down. Really. I think she showed up, he told her to get out, went to take a shower and she killed him. The shot to the head first? He chased her and did not catch her until after she had the gun. He could have caught her before that, especially when she had to climb up to get the gun in the closet. And then, all those stab wounds, 29! She could have called the police very easily if she wanted to. Infact, she should have moved on with her pathetic little life like Travis was doing. She planned this from the get-go. Her attorney must feel like an idiot. Why save her life?. Then we have to support her the rest of her life. Do away with all these murderers. They are a waste of taxpayers money. Can not wait for today's trial to start.

This woman is as pathological as they come. She couldn't tell the truth if she wanted to. I have been watching her on the stand and have found that while she is recalling her alleged abuse she has no reaction, whereas most abuse victims would have some sort of visceral reaction when recounting actions that made them "sick to their stomach".

She stabbed him, slit his throat, then shot him in that order. The jury didn't get to hear that this woman slit his tires and keyed his car prior to her killing him as well as hitting her brother over the head with a bat. She also was the one who in her previous relationships called them off.....this one she didn't. My guess is he called it off and she couldn't take it, started stalking him & killed him. Which makes her a sick control freak.

She took the gun from her grandparents, took the knife with her and drove over 1000 miles with one thing on her mind and that was to kill him. Good thing I'm not on the jury, she would get the death penalty. She is a cold blooded killer.

I actually think that the sparring between Jodi and the prosecuting attorney is going in Jodi's favor. She seems to be getting him to the point to where he will crack, she's frustrating him to no end. I think with her smug demeanor and condescending statements she will have Juan Martinez in a straight jacket before this is all over, of course she's guilty, but she's damn smart too!

And God forbid, if she's found not guilty or found guilty of a lesser charge other than 1st degree murder, there's not a crow big enough for good 'ole Nancy Grace .......

All things considered, i really don't feel for the guy she murdered. He sounds like a douche and no im no man hater. I just don't feel bad for cheaters who get murdered. You mess with fire you WILL get burned eventually. You surrond yourself with messed up people, you get what is comming. Clearly this chick does and did have issues. She is a lunatic. But still I really don't feel bad he probably was using her and then people get surprised when people go off the deep end? Hell hath no fury like a womens scorn. As far as I am concerned, one less douche and one less crazy off the street.

I've been watching the trial on TV for about a month now, and Jodi Arias has been well coached about how to behave and what to say. She makes a point of looking at whoever is asking the questions, then inevitably faces the jury to answer them. Her appearance is also coached, trying to make her look and sound like Little Miss Innocent. But there are holes in her story: she claimed to have shot him first, but he kept coming at her despite being shot in the head. Then she claims to have blacked out...very convenient under the circumstances. She's already admitted to killing him, but how does she know if she had blacked out? Like it says in the article, she forgets crucial details of the murder, but can remember mundane things like what kind of coffee she bought on a given day, or what day that Alexander first had anal sex with her, or what day she saw him making out with an unidentified woman in his house, after they had broken up (as if they were ever really together, other than in her mind).

She was obviously extremely jealous of anyone except herself having any sort of relationship with him, and that jealousy finally overwhelmed her. As I'm seeing it, she wasn't invited to his place, she entered uninvited, confronted him about his seeing other women, and when he rejected her she lost it, stabbed him 27 times and slit his throat before shooting him in the head. Her story about him chasing her after she dropped his camera (after taking pictures of him in the shower) is pure fiction...if he really was chasing her the entrance to his place was a left turn at nearly the same place she turned right and into his closet. Which way would you go, right or left?

In spite of what the article says, I think Juan Martinez has a plan: to show her to be the compulsive liar that she is, and to deconstruct her entire defense. It's not self defense or second degree murder as Kurt Nurmi seems to be trying to claim, but cold, calculated first degree premeditated murder. I just hope there aren't any bleeding hearts on the jury...it could be Casey Anthony part two...

She won't get away with it but she won't get death. Casey anthony didn't do it. It is simple case of neglect: She wasn't paying attention because honestly she probably wasn't the best mom.. The baby drowned or died by other means. She panicked, you know you can go to jail for your baby drowning right? In floriday you can go to jail for 5 years for neglect for that it HAS happened. She looks at it as well my child is dead because of me not paying attention and because of an accident so why should i suffer since i already am suffering.. Why go to jail when i must live with the torment. Easy solution: make it LOOK like one of thousands of kidnappings/rapes/abductions of young children in the U.S. Clearly this wasn't pre-meditated i mean who leaves a body they were PLANNING on killing in the trunk of a relatives car for a week?? don't you think premeditation requires a carefully thought out and somewhat carefully executed plan even amongst the densest of human beings? Don't you think she would have thought of a remote location to bury her or throw her in the ocean if premeditated? No instead she made it look like an abduction in her panic. This isn't hard to realize. why in america does everyone automatically assume a mother wants to kill her baby? Is it that everyone wants to kill their kids at some point?? Im starting to wonder about you folks! It doesn't happen that often even though the media hypes it up considering our population numbers. Also her young cop friend knew and so did her dad and i bet anything that he did molest her not that that is an excuse for neglect. Again, she was found innocent and frankly thats the way she goes.

I think he really liked her to begin with and maybe thought he would marry her if she were Mormon too. That is why she joined the church but she wasn't that in to the church. I think she turned him on to sex in all these other ways because she was more advanced in sex. Darrell said they had anal sex. She had been at it since she was 15. Lots of people like to role play and maybe she just found her idea partner and when he decided that all the kinky sex doesn't make up for someone not being right in other areas she snapped. We must remember she met him and broke up with Darrell that week! Moved to Meza trying to get him back. You can't catch up on any religion in 4 months. Travis had gone to that church since he was a kid. He knew what was right and wrong in the eyes of the church. None of the girls that he dated said he went all the way with them only Jodi. She was in Satan and she killed him. I think she hacked into his voicemail or email and knew he was taking the other girl to Cancun. She gave him a chance to tell the other girl no or to not go on the trip and when he didn't or wouldn't back down she stabbed him in the shower. I think that photo of him sitting in the shower was the first blows to his chest.

BULLETS-BULLETS----Where are the bullets that Travis must have had somewhere in the house if JA did not bring the gun. You don't own a gun, load it and throw away the rest ( box) of the bullets, but if she brought the gun with her ( premeditation ) there will be no bullets in Travis' house, therefore he didn't own the gun. This seems obvious to me ? Am I missing something here?

All the Mormons I ever knew owned guns. Hard to believe he didn't own guns. Did they look for a hidden floor safe?

I'm wondering why she didn't say she took a gun on the 3,000 miles road trip along for protection. Driving alone through the desert, it might be a good idea for a woman to have a gun.

I did enjoy the simple answer, "that's what I always ordered at Starbucks." I guess Martinez has been very successful, but his attempts at "gotcha" questions is annoying. His incessant "right?" comment at the end of every statement seems odd. How about just asking a question and letting her weave her inconsistent stories and let the jury figure it out? I'll be interested to hear opinions from the jury members after the trial.

Other than that shooting, stabbing, and throat slicing, she seems like a really nice girlfriend.

She was going to Utah for medical supplies and got side tract.

I would like to know if there was a rope involved and if there was why did she take it? It doesn't make sense. If it was true she would of left it, for evidence to be found to calibrate her story that he tied her up. I think that she made it up to explain the reason why she had access to a knife. Also if she shot him in the head first, there is no way he could of picked her up and slammed her on the tile. He would of grabbed his head with his hands because of the pain. I think that she stabbed him in his chest while he was in the shower (the picture of him sitting on the floor in the shower) he looks like he is in shock. I think he then crawled over to the sink and he was bleeding from his chest. (That explains the blood in the sink) when she started to stab him in his back. He then crawled down the hall to try to get away from her, while she continued to stab him in his back and that would explain the blood spatters all along the bottom of the wall down the hall. She then sliced his throat then drug him back down the hall to the bathroom then shot him in the head (that would explain the bullet in the bathroom) then placed him in the shower. She had memory enough at that point to clean up the murder scene and to figure out her alibi. She figured out at 15 years old how to control and manipulate men with sex. I think that she was a sex addict. She was a fatal attraction for Travis. She is a pathological liar, a pre-meditated murderer and a danger to society. She needs to be put away for life without parole.

Murderers don't deserve a break. If there's absolutely NO doubt of who killed the victim, they should face the death penalty. Get rid of those years of appeals. ONE appeal, for mercy, 6mos after the conviction. Then the needle.

Now I don't believe for a moment that the death penalty is a deterrent, it will certainly stop THAT person from ever killing again.

janine, I agree. Those long drawn out appeals are nonsense. I believe in the long run, the death penalty can be a deterrent. When the death penalty is executed in a timely fashion without all those appeals, some of the people who feel that they can get life or freed in time will think twice. The justice system is a joke and the bleeding hearts against the death penalty should take a walk. You murder like Jodi did, you get the death penalty and is done within six months. With all the tech they have now, there is very little room for mistakes on finding if a person is quilty or not. Should have happened to Casey Anthony.

Anyone else notice that evil smirk on her face, every time she thinks she has outwitted the prosecutor?

I hope they play it back for the jury before they go into debate her fate. She really thinks she has this in the bag. I looked at a website this week-end that is on her side and there whole goal is to out wit the police in this. A man died a horrible death! I think she sliced him up and he was still moaning and she shot him to put him out of her misery! She said is she killed someone she wouldn't want them to suffer.

Yep, I see the smirks on her face which shows her intent of trying to outsmart the prosecutor; if I was on the jury I'd be thinking she is continuing her lies just to save her butt and not own up to the horrible crime she did; amazing how she was trying to appear like this sympathy-seeking innocent one when her attys were questioning her but now she is portraying herself as a smartass, so obvious.

I think Ms. Arias is trying to lengthen her "15 minutes" of fame. Who can believe a word out of her mouth anyway. She did it. She said she did. Funny how she can remember so many things from the past, but not stabbing him. Save the state of Arizona a lengthy trial and lock her up for life. I rest my case.

She got caught and has spent five years in jail awaiting trial, and yet she still seems to think she's the smartest one in the room. Her self-confidence as she tells her stories would be funny if she weren't so creepy in that sociopathic-evil-b!tch kind of way. No matter how the trial ends, she'll always be the Three-Way Killer to me. (How appropriate.)

I don't buy the shot him first because, when you shot a .25 the shell casing or housing is expelled from the gun. Pops up into the air and then falls to the floor. This time it landed in a pool of blood. He was bleeding before the shot and I don't mean a shaving cut! There was a pool of blood on the floor. the casing landed in it and stuck. Even if it bounced on the floor when it stopped it was in a pool of blood. She told Darrell she was going to Utah but then she went to Az. Gas cans....did she stop on the way to AZ to buy gas before she went to AZ?

This is America, she will get away with murder...look at Casey Anthony. All Arias has to do is put on a really good act for the jury and they'll buy it wholesale. It is so sickening listening and watching her talk about her sex life with Travis- the way she talks about it reminds me of some sadistic, sicko, like she's trying to win over the jury with her steamy sexcapades...what a crazy bitch, she deserves to die for killing this man.
