Dead man found floating near mysterious boat wreckage off Florida coast

U.S. Coast Guard

The U.S. Coast Guard is asking members of the public to help identify the source of a debris field, which included this large portion of a vessel, spotted Sunday in the Atlantic Ocean about 22 miles east of Jacksonville.

The U.S. Coast Guard is trying to figure out what happened to a deceased man found floating in the Atlantic Ocean Sunday near the wreckage of a boat about 22 miles east of Jacksonville, Fla., according to authorities.

The search for potential survivors continued Monday, with Coast Guard boats on the scene gathering evidence and looking for other people who may have been on the boat, said Lt. Grant Johnson, a Coast Guard public affairs officer.

Investigators have not yet identified the boat and don't know where it came from or where it was headed, Johnson said.

Approximately 10 life jackets were found near the boat debris, but the Coast Guard has not found evidence that other people were on the boat.

"We're working under the assumption other people were on board," Johnson said. "We're going to err on the side of safety. With the lack of evidence we're inclined to continue searching until we know otherwise."

The Coast Guard found the man's passport and believe he is a 49-year-old who last lived in Miami, according to Johnson. His body was recovered and taken to the medical examiner's office in Jacksonville, Johnson said.

Officials declined to identify the man pending notification of his family. The Coast Guard is working with local law enforcement to find his family and figure out what may have happened to the boat.

The Coast Guard did not receive a distress call related to the vessel, two large pieces of which were found near the body, Johnson said.

The wreckage was first spotted around 6 p.m. Sunday evening by an aircrew from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The Coast Guard searched through the night for survivors, with boats and aircraft involved in the operation. Bad weather in the Jacksonville area prevented Coast Guard aircraft from searching the debris field this morning, but three boats remained on the scene looking for survivors and gathering evidence, Johnson said.

It's difficult to even understand the scale of the one piece of debris shown in the picture. It could be the size of a tennis court or the size of a cabinet door. More pictures would help, and something to help show the scale and size would also be helpful.

It looks like it was hit by a supertanker. Neither captain even knew it happened. I think they might find smudges on the hull of that tanker. Just my speculation.

Rick, that's the first thing that popped into my mind. Maybe not a supertanker but there are a lot of container ships in that area. Jacksonville and Savannah always seem like the busiest areas when we do the sail from Charleston to Miami....

Just a quick guess from my boating days, beam (width) 15 to 18 feet and length based on what looks like flying bridge controls 65 to 70 foot. Dramatic tear in structure is consistent with a collision with larger steal hulled vessel. No apparent signs of fire but explosion can not be ruled out.

Rest in peace and condolences to the family. If anyone else was aboard may they be found safe and sound.

Small boats can and do explode since most run on gasoline which is much more volatile than diesel. If you have a inboard or I/O and you get a very small fuel leak the engine compartment can easily fill with gas fumes and in older engines the distributor provides the spark to blow your boat up and in newer boats the starter will do the job. or it could be the auto switch on your bilge pump.

Amaxing Rick, you came to the conclusion that they were hit by a supertanher by reading the fact empty article a and photograph of a piece of wreckage that has nothing about it to indicate what happened, meaning any "speculation" is based on nothing.

Hope it's not another Bertram being torn apart after stuffing a wave. Although this damage looks more severe. The one that sank was off S.C. and was a 63' Bertram, although it was a few years old(3) it only had been a demo. Theory was it may have struck a bouy although the bouy in question had minor marks and was plastic. Very well could have been struck by a tanker or cargo ship or had an explosion. I doubt this damage was done by something smaller than a few hundred feet if struck. The piece in the picture is the bridge, you can seat the seat post bases and where the console was in front of it. It also appears that there is another 14 plus feet in front of the console which would make this a larger vessel, maybe in the 50 plus foot range. Would not be surprised if it was even around 70'. I hope the person found was alone on the vessel but even when transporting there is usually atleast 2 people.

      #1.24 - Mon Feb 25, 2013 9:23 PM EST

      Wow!

Got to Bertram's webpage and look at the 80.

The wreckage doesn't look exactly like it, but not totally dissimilar either.

Your lack of knoladge of sea going vessels is showing. There is much information to be learned from just the photo. The bulbous bow section of a tanker or freighter would tip the boat (60 to 70 deg. list) and drive the ships bow through the topside of the boat. Breaking the boat in half from the top down. This would result in top deck slammed into the side of the ship ripping all stanchions and deck gear off just like in the photo. Although an explosion can't be ruled out, it normally would have caused more of a fracturing than a lateral tear. Depending on the ships speed and draft the destruction could have taken seconds to 10 minuets or more. At slower speeds the boat could have been ripped apart slowly and been pushed for miles. The bridge of some tankers can be more than 800 feet from the bow with no chance of seeing or hearing anything. A closer view would help but clues abound with just the photo presented.

I'm glad that you can predict what happened on such a lack of actual factual data.

The area is well known for it's dramatic and terrible changes in the weather. It's far more likely that it's just another boat out doing whatever fully legal thing that many boat owners do down there and was destroyed by the weather conditions and resulting horrific seas (brutal waves, etc, etc. etc.).

While it's possible that it's involved in drug running, it's not the most likely case.

FormerMarineSgt - I was born and raised in Jacksonville, and lived there for over 25 years out of my life. The area is no more known for "dramatic and terrible changes in the weather" than any other section of the country. Florida is one of the top places in the world for lightning strikes, but thunderstorms are not common this time of year.

Sor some reason the unknown dark underwater scary somethings make these ocean disasters creapy. A body by a car overturned is one thing, but seeing the floating boat debris in the water ushers ghosts from closet, under bed, seamonsters, and basicly shivers me timbers.

What I find funny is that the drones were an issue when Bush was in office, and they've been used by law enforcement since Clinton was in office, but the right says nothing until they imagine they can use it on Obama. Obama is simply carrying on the tradition started by Bush, and Clinton, and Reagan...

Maybe the Coast Gaurd should check out the Chinese Submarines that are cruising our coast and the Russians. They don't want anyone who has seen them to report what they have seen. People don't know it but China and Russia both want to invade the USA. This is why Obama wanted our guns because the Chinese told Pbama how to get our guns and they waqnted us disarmed. Yo can believe this or not but I know this to be a fact. Start doing research on the computer and you can find it out just like I did. 200,000 Russian troops here in the USA , Gearman Troops here in the USA , 5 mile long 3 mile wide base in Mexico 65 miles south of Lareado Tx. holding Thousands of Chinese Troops Being housed in air conditioned Containers shipped over on ships. Mexicans in power i Mexico have asked Senators in Washington for names and addresses of all legally registered gun owners that are in all the States that border Mexico. Texas,New Mexico,Arizona and California. I pray that our Senators are not so stupid to give them what they want.

You are easily the craziest poster I have seen yet!

I really hope you don't have a gun....unless the barrel is in your mouth, finger on the trigger.

Just kill yourself before Obama does!

Hmmm...he might be onto something. Our government does owe China a LOT of $$$. Why not give them the whole country to settle the debt? ;)

Onlt 2 things that could have caused hull seperation like that given the size of the boat with deck width seen makes it between 40 and 50 ft. it was either run down by a much larger vessel or an explosion from propane as diesel won't explode and and boats of that size are rarely powered by gasoline, don't see any burn or scorch marks so I'm going to fathom a guess and say it was run down. It doesn't have to be a supertanker, just a steel hulled vessel of 80 to 100 ft. could do that, but it would take one about 300 ft or greater to not notice the collision. With all the cruise ships running in that area that would be the most likely culprit

Looks like a charter fishing boat. Two seat pedestal holders on the back. The front is the main cabin with the battery for the controls exposed.

Probably a new shipment of illegals dumped off somewhere.

It looks like two big bite marks on the back of the boat. Could it be Jaws 5? (Maybe 6 or 7, I've lost count.)
