Deadly storm dumps snow in North, heavy rain in South

The major storm that left cars stranded in Oklahoma and buried Amarillo, Texas, as also resulted in hundreds of flight cancellations at Chicago's O'Hare Airport. Meanwhile Detroit is struggling to keep roads clear. Weather Channel meteorologist Eric Fisher reports.

A powerful winter storm continued to hit much of the country Tuesday, with heavy snow spreading from the Plains to the Great Lakes and severe thunderstorms possible in the South, forecasters warned.

The National Weather Service said the storm would “continue to bring a variety of hazards” to the affected areas. Winds have been gusting up to hurricane strength, with 84 mph recorded at El Paso, Texas.

The storm was blamed for at least two deaths on Monday: Heavy snow caused a roof of a house in Woodward, Okla., to collapse, killing one person inside, and in northwest Kansas, a 21-year-old man was killed when his SUV overturned on an icy patch of Interstate 70. A third death was reported on Tuesday, after a female passenger died in a pickup truck accident on an icy strip of road overnight. Three others were injured in the accident.

“We have roofs collapsing all over town,” Woodward Mayor Roscoe Hill, Jr., told Reuters. “We really have a mess on our hands.”

The storm brought the February total in Wichita, Kansas, to 21 inches, breaking a 100-year-old record for the month, NBC station KSN reported. A KSN reporter was covering the storm when a building collapsed under the weight of snow.

Authorities pleaded with people to stay off the roads because of what Weather Channel meteorologist Greg Postel described as a “really nasty blizzard.”

Powerful storms push across the Midwest, South. NBC's Jay Gray reports.

The NWS said that heavy snow would spread from the Plains to the Great Lakes, with “blizzard conditions possible through early Tuesday.”

“On the south side of the storm system, severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are possible across portions of the Gulf Coast and Southeast,” it added.

Severe thunderstorms and the threat of heavy rainfall remained possible over sections of the southeastern states and the Gulf Coast on Tuesday, the NWS said, as the south side of the storm system moved through the area.

A waterspout came ashore in Tampa, Fla., damaging a Westin hotel, WTSP reported. Winds of 90 mph were reported in Cedar Key, and trees and power lines were down.

Charleston, S.C., broke its record for rain for the month with 10.46 inches -- and more was falling.

Hurricane force winds blew into Texas creating a 'historic' blizzard and whiteout conditions in the Texas-Oklahoma panhandle. Kansas also saw its share of snow as the storm blew north, and blizzard warnings are in effect. The Weather Channel's Mike Seidel reports.

In a storm summary message posted at 4 a.m. ET, the weather service said blizzard warnings were in effect for parts of central northern Oklahoma with storm watches and warnings in effect for some places from central Oklahoma into the southern Great Lakes.

In Chicago, the wintry mix could affect voter turnout in the special primary to replace former Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr., in the Illinois 2nd District. As much as five inches of slushy snow was expected in the city’s southern suburbs, and a storm watch has been issued for the northern part of the state.

A fallen tree limb blocks his drive as John Cushing shoves snow Tuesday in Kansas City, Mo.

Storm watches and warnings were also in effect for portions of the Appalachians, mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states, while ice storm warnings and freezing rain advisories were in effect for parts of West Virginia.

The NWS warned of high winds in the Appalachians in Tennessee, North Carolina and southern Virginia.

In Texas, residents discovered that even their snowdrifts are bigger as they began to dig out from a whopping 19 inches of snow in Amarillo that stranded as many as 100 motorists in the Panhandle and caused Gov. Rick Perry called out military forces.

Farther south, there were flood and flash-flood warnings and watches for “much of the Gulf Coast and southeast U.S. from Louisiana to Georgia.”

Flood watches were also in effect for parts of the mid-Atlantic Region, the NWS notice added, as rain was expected throughout the greater Washington, D.C., area on Tuesday. The mix of rain and wind was expected to begin by noon, picking up through the later part of the day. Meteorologists warned people should expect more rain than sleet as temperatures were likely to remain above freezing. The rain should move out of the area by Wednesday morning, and might yield to sunny skies later in the afternoon.

Commuters in New York City and the tri-state area should also expect to see a late-afternoon cocktail of rain, sleet, and snow. The worst of the storm was likely to hit overnight, though morning commuters might also catch the tail of the storm on Wednesday, forecasters said. As much as six inches of snow could accumulate at higher elevations inland.

Actually, people are probably living from it. A report of one traffic fatality in Kansas is probably a lot less than would occur over a 24-hour period in a 3 or 4-state area. When people are advised to get off the roads, lives are saved...

The difference is that quite a few years ago when there were these same types of storms poeple were much more intelligent and self-sufficient, and lived through them. Today they are idiots who expect government to hold their hands cradle-to-grave, and they die. The snow storms are no more deadly" then they were, it's just people who are much more stupid!

Let just put it this way. This one was an every 20-25 year storm not "a few years" and it is more deadly than the rest regardless of intelligence.

In the affected area, had there been no snow there would have been more deaths. Just from normal driving.

Deaths happen everyday. Fewer people heading outside can actually lower traffic deaths.

But the water is surely welcomed and water brings life. Families not loosing the farms is a good thing. If they get 5 or 10 more good storms this spring that would be great.

    Totally agree!
How many more people have to lose their lives before we take action...
We'll start with a ban on "assault" storms, the ones that have no purpose other than taking lives. Next is a ban on "high capacity" dumps, no reason for snowfall capacity greater than 10".

You're arguing over a headline that is crafted to make you think that the bad news is worse than it is, and you blame accidents, i.e. roofs collapsing under heavy snow, and weather related traffic mishaps on people expecting the Government to take care of them?

saxon, don't you know that the liberals prefer "climate change" now!? It is kind of like the weatherman who always predicts a 50% chance of precipitation. If it rains or snows, he's right! If he doesn't, he's right again! The liberals hate it when they can be shown to be wrong or "misinformed" so they find wording to try to make sure that they cannot be called on their "scientific theories"!

Actually, BlindMilke and all others wondering about the deluge of storms that we are getting - as our climate warms we will see more and more serious weather events. As the oceans warm, there is more evaporation, as the air temperature warms (and it has significantly), it holds more moisture. So, when it storms, we will see more precipitation. NOAA scientists explain that with warming temps the atmosphere is like a full bathtub. When the plug is pulled, the water will flow all at once down the drain. We are experiencing that. We are seeing heavier than normal precipitation - for instance, Kansas saw snow fall at 3 inches per hour recently. In some areas a year's worth of rain falls in the course of ten days, not throughout the year. Check out the National Climate Assessment draft report that is available at: or webinars that explain the findings at: The front page of the security and sustainability forum has a map that shows the increase in precipitation expected as the climate warms. Good luck on your research.

Can you actually be that ignorant, a couple of snow storms doesn't mean anything on the subject of global warming . Get informed become half intelligent learn that we are losing the polar ice caps at inches per day which raises the level of the ocean which in turn does put more moisture in the air to flow over the regions that are cold causing these killer snow storms or floods. The world is changing and we better do something about it or all of this so called fiscal responsibilty that these MORONS from the so called Republican and Tea Party are trying to shove down our throats for the sake of our children is all just Bull S--t because we will not be leaving them a safe enviroment to live on Florida and most of the east coast will be under water the salinity of the Oceans will change killing off species of fish we rely on for food. Wake up global warming is real and it is moving at an alarming race we are killing off Polar Bears at such a rate they will be extinct possibly in 50 years and its all because of ignorance from people like you.

I can see that green and recon have no idea what they are talking about, they just want to ramp up the hysteria. They are scientific ignoramuses and have no knowledge of either atmospheric physics or Meteorology 101. There has been no significant warming of either the ocean or the atmosphere.

All you see here folks is endless reiteration of the climate change liars and their faux talking points. They are not to be taken seriously, since even if this climate change thingy were true, nothing can or will be done about it. We are simply in an active and progressive weather pattern and the storm track has been trending a bit south for awhile. Nothing new or dramatic to see here folks. Take a look at what the satellite is currently showing.

Let see what the Book(KJV) has to say on the subject:

Mal. 4:1, "FOR, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the that cometh shall burn them up, saith the :LORD of hosts,"

Isaiah 30:26, "Moverover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people..."

While I could take the time to provide the links to the studies, I'm not going to because "green" people aren't fond of facts. But to those who actually use real scientific evidence, here's a news flash. The recognized studies tie the very slight increase in global temperature to the sun cycles. And guess what, global warming hasn't been warming for years now. Look at Earth's entire history of global cycles and they can all be tied to sun cycles.

With that said, I'm all for doing our best to keep the earth clean but this "green" fanaticism is ridiculous. Ethanol in gas is worse for our environment and that can be proven; lower mileage, more engine wear thus greater emissions, plus the loss of rain forests to grow corn and all the fertilizer in water run off to grow the corn. None of which is good. Wind turbines kill FAR MORE birds than petroleum production. And its more the countries of Indonesia, China, India, etc that are polluting and getting a pass.

The funniest thing about the green stupidity is blaming cows. As a rancher, I simply think God knew what he was doing when he designed those cows. lol I will take care of God's earth since he charged man with that responsibility as best I can but I will not cave in to the hypocrisy of the green left. Funny, they hate the oil industry but they get on their computers to rant about it and they fly/drive all over God's green earth. All because of petroleum products.

I'm with you I was wondering when the global warming is causing snow storms were going to show up I'm sure we have had some impact in the weather patterens but to believe this is not mostly due to the weather cycles of the planet is silly. When I was a young man in the 70's we were told we were entering another ice age and to be prepared. Now it's global warming causing this weather maybe it's the ice age they predicted in the 70's. What I'm sure of is you can't get a grant to study anything if you don't predict some type of calamity so these folks need to justify their grant money and keep it flowing.

It was so hot and dry that my dog went into the corn field and then the corn started popping. He thought it was snowing and he layed down and froze to death.

The snow is falling heavily now, 2-3 inches an hour, at 5:45 AM. Cell service and land lime service is down, Hope I don't get a no call- no show at work. Because I can't get down the road. Power is on, for now. I guess winter is making up for last year and this one all at once. Oh well, It's Missouri, if you don't like the weather, wait a little while, it will change. Guess I'll try calling work again.

Stay safe Nico. If the weather is that bad, stay home.

And to the rest of you who think YOU are so important to your company. If the roads are bad, wait it out. Your company will wait.

If they can't understand on a day like this, they aren't worth working for.

Well, still snowing and wind blowing. Just a really raw morning. Got hold of my boss so it's all good on the call in front and guess what?, he's still at home too. LOL! His four wheel drive won't climb the hill from his house. The power is out at the plant, so no real rush to get in. Power company says it will mid day at the soonest before the power is restored. I'll go out and clean off my truck and warm it up. I'll shoot for getting to the plant about noon. We'll see. I started my tractor and hooked up the plow. I'm going to plow the driveway and my road, then the county road down to the highway. The state guys should have made at least a couple of passes on it by now. We''ll just have to see how it goes and how bad the drifts are. I may just road my tractor to work, it has a cab and good heater. It also has no problem getting around in deep snow. Not the most economical machine, but hey, I can pull folks out of ditches and such on the way and off set the fuel cost.

As for not worth working for, in this economy, you don't take a job for granted, especially one that pays and has the benefits mine does. There are times when one must brave the elements. Anyway, time to get busy. Stay safe and warm everyone in the snow zone and the thunder storms down south. It looks like it's going to be a rough day for a lot of folks.

Foggy here, but not too bad I can see the neighbors yard light, mild temps in the mid twenties, relative calm with strong southerly winds returning tomorrow back to the normal 30mph breeze. And would you people in Missouri quit stealing Mn. euphemisms to describe weather? :)

Um, sorry but that's Florida's euphemism. Here it will rain on one side of the street and not on the other, and I mean pour on one side.

LOL, I've only lived in one place where the weather was consistant on a daily, nay a monthly basis and that was Carlsbad NM. You can count on it to be Sunny and dry. Winters a cool 70 degrees except at night whne it can get down in the teens, the Summers were hot in th 100's You get about 6" of rain a year, but that one day would flood the entire area.

Myrmicat, I've been to Florida, and I have witness the whole rain on one side of the street and dry on the other. That is not a euphemism, it is just a fact.

A storm or so ago I heard one report say that the Great Plains would have to get 10 feet of snow to make up for the multi year drought deficit. Of course, that's if it doesn't all just run off when it melts.

At the beginning of this month a news release stated the lack of snow in the midwest was the final proof of climate change and that the U.S. needed to get on the stick with additional national and international programs. Will the new release say this snow is further proof of climate change or will they admit they are just a bunch of PR specialists who can spin on a dime with new false claims. Personally I expect the climate to change over time because I think the Sun and the Universe are a lot more powerful than me.

People out driving in a raging blizzard are not killed by the storm. They are committing suicide. Poorly constructed houses are a tragedy and the builder should be sued because in this day and age there is no reason for a roof to collapse. Tragic events but entirely avoidable.

Houses in Oklahoma are not built with the steep grade roofs like those in the North becuase of the high winds. They don't usually get two feet of "wet" snow either. Thus when you get that much heavy snow on a low grade roof, collapses will happen. Not to mention many of those houses were built well over 40 years ago.

The person that was killed on I-70, sounds like he was a victom of black ice. The blizzard had not cuaght up to them yet.

I'm a real jerk and I need to put me in my place, and I do believe a nice fat lawsuit would do the job, after all i cant afford it. We had a beautiful blizzard here in Plainview, Texas. 8 or 10 inches of wet snow. We need several of these to catch up with the drought. We are all digging out today but that is OK. The sun will shine as it always does around here and the snow will be gone in no time. Be safe out there and thank you Lord for the moisture.

Yep, it took awhile for winter to get set up good, but sure am appreciating the moisture. Last year here in Denver we had some storms in February, then it got warm and dry for March, April, and May, normally out wettest months. Hope that doesn't repeat. Expecting another inch or two from the latest disturbance to pass through later today.

They were predicting a winter blizzard with up to 3 to 6 inches of snow in the OKC area and we ended up with a lot of rain and barely any snow which is gone now.

been stuck in NM due to snow storm.

The Army and their infinite wisdom thought it would be a good idea to have us (65 vehicles) convoy from Camp Roberts CA to NG Armory in Albuquerque in January.(where our vehicles would be railheaded to Kentucky and we would be jammed into busses (just in case your wondering that's 135 ppl in two busses, moooo!). We made it as far as Gallup NM. We had to stop at the Loves truck stop on I40 and sleep in the vehicles because it was white out conditions and the road was closed.

Hey Jerry, thanks for the reference. As long as you deliver out of love , then you will be blessed for telling the truth.
After I saw "Recon25" post i didn't know why he or she had to get the name calling started on Republicans insinuating that they were going to eliminate fish in the ocean and interfere with ppl having food to eat. I thought Democrats only waited for a foodstamp deposit anyway. Wouldn't the actual act of fishging require some work? I couldn't resist! And no the Republicans do not have all the answers either, that is for sure.
And to Greg, I hope you never find out the truth before it is too late. I am excited that prophecy is unfolding before our very eyes. The Father takes so long in doing so as warning, not to wipe us out. Even the athiest will have to give an account at the Great White Throne of Judgment. Before you follow the world, open your heart. The Bible tells us about the great awakening before the end of this earth as we know it. Get this...did you know that 40,000 ppl are excepting Jesus Christ every single day in China and 1,000,000 (1 mill) Islam followers are excepting Him in middle eastern countries and risking their lives for doing so? America has been so blessed that we have turned our backs on truth. The Holy Bible. I am sorry for what ever has affected you this way to not believe. I encourage you to open your heart once more and just see because eternity is too long to be wrong my friend. Blessings to you and also to Recon which I smarted off to. I do so get fed up with dems and reps fussing, we are all ppl and such a hame to be labeled as political identities rather than believers or non believers.

Back in the day when my son would have had to walk or ride to get around, the idea of getting cold and wet would have kept him from going to friends' houses to play all-night video games. But now that he is an adult with a car with a heater those problems don't exist. It took me a while to convince him that the weather conditions were not conducive to driving through an ice storm. He's much smarter than your average bear, but he obviously still hasn't had enough life experiences to always make the best decisions. He is now willing to call 511 and listen to the road conditions report himself. Thankfully, it seems to have worked.
