Suspect in custody for dismemberment of NYC woman

A suspect is in custody for the dismemberment of a New York City woman whose body parts were found early Tuesday morning scattered throughout suitcases and plastic bags in a Bronx neighborhood.

Police believe the victim is a 45-year-old woman who has been missing since the weekend, NBCNewYork.com has learned.

The woman’s son, who called police to report her missing Tuesday morning, was being questioned, according to NBCNewYork.com.

A man walking his dog with his 12-year-old son in the neighborhood found a woman’s severed shoulder and two hands in a plastic bag and the rest of the body turned out to be scattered in suitcases and another bag elsewhere in the neighborhood.

The man first thought the bag was full of books, law enforcement officials told NBCNewYork.com. They said he moved to open it but noticed an SUV circling the block, so he took the bag around the corner and then found the body parts.

The man sent his son, who was along for the walk, to call police while the man kept walking the dog. Two blocks later, he found a suitcase and the dog sat next to it, and when the man opened it he found a woman’s torso, wearing a bra, law enforcement officials said.

Police later found a plastic bag with a leg and a foot inside, and nearby another suitcase with a leg and the woman’s head.

Law enforcement officials tell NBC 4 New York they found an empty box in her apartment that they believe contained a power saw. The apartment also smelled of bleach and was littered with latex gloves.

How absolutely horrible that this poor woman, someone's daughter, suffered an incredibly savage death. It's just gut wrenching to phantom. How fortunate this man's dog helped him find all of her body. It does seem odd the killer didn't just hide her remains in a dumpster, but this seems more like a game, spreading it around. Why even children might have found parts, curious about a suitcase.

This monstrous being who committed this despicable crime is lower then any life form. May this soul be at peace, her family found quickly, so she get's the tender attention deserved. The police catch her killer and he face full justice in this life and Eternal Justice when he finally dies.

I can only imagine the type of person who would, not only kill someone, but to dishonor their body by dismembering it like this and scattering it so casually for anyone to find. This man is sick, depraved, and must be found before someone else is killed. Lord knows what possessed him to do this and I can only pray for the next person who crosses his path.

There's nothing in the article to suggest the murder, itself, was savage. Granted, we all assume it was because of the dismembered body, but for all we know, she was poisoned and went quietly to sleep and never woke up.

The guy should have called the cops on the first discovery and not touched anything else. Contaminating a crime scene is something the police don't think highly of.

Ingver where in the article did it state a male committed this horrible crime. Ohhhh you just assume it is a male, what if it was a jealous wife?

Something seems a little off...he finds a bag with a shoulder and hands...then finds a suitcase, and decides to play detective and find the rest, and touches the stuff?

eh...maybe i've watched too many shows like BONES and SVU, but rule #1 - dont touch it, period.

Im sure the cops are already ahead of me on this one, but i'd keep a close eye on the guy who just happened to find all these easily findable body parts.

Sometimes, the guilty party just cant help but make sure everyone knows what they did...

WeAllHaveOpinions - statistically speaking, far greater odds that a man committed this crime, rather than a woman.

    of course, it's not impossible.

I just wouldnt bet on it.

I'm curious about the SUV circling the block where all this was found. I'd track down that fellow ASAP. Yes, someone had a good point about keeping a close eye on the guy who found this, but that seems even more suspicious.

Agreed. Still, there's no evidence the SUV was in any way involved in the murder or the distribution of the body. It could be a simple coincidence. Let's wait and see if there is a connection with the murder. There is circumstantial evidence sometimes.

I await the outcome of the investigation.

Aside from that, considering the stories I've been reading about with regards to New York...... you couldn't pay me to even visit there. What a cesspool!

BeachBum #1.3 - Don't be specious. Of course any murder is a "biggie." I didn't say otherwise. If the murdered woman was poisoned and not aware she was being poisoned...and she went to sleep and died in her sleep, then the murder was not savage, according to the dictionary definition of the word "savage."

While jokes might seem distasteful, I think a little levity helps blunt the horror of the actual crime. Nothing said will ever change the outcome. People insulate themselves from the horrors of the world by using humor.

Bombings and drone attacks do the same every day, but since it's not on American soil it doesn't matter. The body parts go into body bags, not garbage bags & suitcases though.

lisa, it's a shame there arent enough jobs for all those folks on the govt dole, eh?

then working folks like you and me wouldnt have to take care of them.

IMO - our govt should be helping people find work, not handing out paychecks.

but, in order for that to be successful, there has to be jobs to put these folks into...and there just arent.

It's absurd that we bitch round and round about who's fault it is, and it's always the other parties fault, ALWAYS.

But we never actually talk about the solutions, and pulling the plug on govt assistance isnt a solution. It's the beginning of far worse problems...unless of course, you're desperate to turn america into a 3rd world nation? I know im not.

The solutions are obvious, but of course it requires GOVT and PRIVATE BUSINESS work together...just like it requires both parties to work together.

And fat chance of that happening, because it's far more important to blame THOSE PEOPLE for all thats wrong with our nation, than to actually fix...all thats wrong with our nation. Wait, it's not more important...it's just easier to bitch and moan.

LoveBNamom: that's exactly what I thought! His son was only 12, what if he was hurt going back to telephone? And what if he was targeted while still out alone with the dog?

I guess, though, he didn't want to leave everything and go back with his son to call in case the circling SUV was the killer and give the killer time to move all the evidence. He probably weighed his options carefully in such a dire situation, I imagine.

And how silly, the comment about no cell phone. The Bronx isn't the wealthiest section of New York, hello! He possibly couldn't afford one, or only needed one landline, or perhaps (gasp) he doesn't take his cell phone with him everywhere??? I know I don't, much to the chagrin of my husband, but I just don't need to always be available to everyone!

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Sources have tentatively identified a woman whose body parts were found in a bag dumped on the street in the Bronx.

Law enforcement sources have tentatively identified the parts in the bag as 45 year-old Tanya Byrd.

Byrd was reported missing by her 22-year-old son on Monday.

Sources say Byrd was dismembered inside her apartment. They located latex gloves and a power saw inside the home.

According to the sources the shower curtain is also missing and there is a strong odor of bleach inside.

Byrd is the mother of three and her youngest son has Down Syndrome.

The first bag was found on Eagle Avenue and 158th Street in the Melrose section just after 5 a.m. They were dropped at different spots across several blocks, which is why there are four separate crime scenes.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said a woman's head was found and that a suitcase and duffel bags were scattered along the roadway, including next to Grove Hill Elementary School.

"A dog walker in St. Mary's Park found a bag, actually found two bags in the park that were separated," Kelly said. "He ultimately opened one of the bags and found what appeared to be body parts."

A witness told police that a person in a vehicle dropped the bags in a pile of other garbage bags.

That vehicle, reported to be a silver SUV, then fled the scene.

Local news reports that the woman is tentatively identified as missing mom Tanya Byrd. An electric saw was found in her home.

Reading the local story above, this was probably done by someone she knew. Someone who knew they could take their time and dismember the body.

Why go through the time and trouble to dismember a body only to dump the pieces in a public area where they are certain to be found? Weird. Grizzly and weird. NCY must have millions of trash bins. Dump the pieces there. The odor would probably be assumed to be rotting garbage, not human remains, and ignored.

Hopefully the pieces will lead to the identity of the killer. Very sad. And, to repeat, weird.

Looking at pics, she was a big woman. Probably difficult to dispose of the body in one piece and not be noticed.

Not that either of us is an expert in body disposal! ;)

I guess if it was done in a rush, there might be more evidence with which to catch the killer. Hopefully that is true. This is a horrific crime.

I graduated from the school of Law & Order, and CSI. Took me 6 seasons to get my degree.

But that is my theory on why the killer dismembered her. And he probably knows her well, since he took the time to do that knowing no one else would walk in.

Hmm, might it have something to do with the fact that she was in six or seven pieces?

I know, I know someone probably killed her some other way and then cut her up, but it seems like you have at least one good theory as to why she died!

Why cut up a body only to leave the remains where they will be easily found? That doesn't make any sense. Very gruesome. It's frightening to know that there are people who are capable and able to do this to another. I hope the monster is found quickly. Which brings up another question - was this woman a random victim or did she know her killer?

Her 22 year old son was taken in for questioning, but that was because he was being uncooperative. Doesn't mean he is a suspect. But I would think this was done by someone who knew her.

Maybe she was killed for something he's involved in? Wouldn't be the first time. That is rank speculation at this point, but I am sure the police will explore that avenue even if to put it to rest.

It read as though he continued walking the dog because he noticed an SUV circling the neighborhood. Maybe he was afraid to stop where he found the first bag in case the occupants of the vehicle decided to start firing at him.

Seriously, who would want to risk seeing more severed body parts? I say the dog walker did it and is trying to mislead authorities by being the one to "find" the body.

I'd keep walking, if I noticed an SUV circling the block, maybe watching me. Better to send the boy away and keep moving as though there's nothing wrong in order to avoid attracting attention.

Not sure if I'd check the suitcase, or not. I could see avoiding it, but I could also see checking out of either morbid fear, or a need to know if the police need to be notified of the item.

Just speculating: this is some kind of crime of passion, maybe with a bit of a threat thrown in. Kill and dismember someone - passion and extreme hatred for the victim, ultimate disrespect - I can utterly destroy you. Then to put the pieces where they would be quickly found - either a desire to be caught and punished (possible but doubtful) or else a threat/warning to those close to her - I am dangerous and don't mess with me. Any way you go about it, someone who really needs a counseling session with the electric chair.

I would also assume that they would have had time on their side allowing them to cut her up in her own home and to attempt cleaning up the scene, it seems to me that the list of suspects is relatively short. Why would the dog walker after finding the first bag with body parts in it keep looking ? I would have been busy puking my guts out.
