A suspect is in custody for the dismemberment of a New York City woman whose body parts were found early Tuesday morning scattered throughout suitcases and plastic bags in a Bronx neighborhood.
Police believe the victim is a 45-year-old woman who has been missing since the weekend, NBCNewYork.com has learned.
The woman’s son, who called police to report her missing Tuesday morning, was being questioned, according to NBCNewYork.com.
A man walking his dog with his 12-year-old son in the neighborhood found a woman’s severed shoulder and two hands in a plastic bag and the rest of the body turned out to be scattered in suitcases and another bag elsewhere in the neighborhood.
The man first thought the bag was full of books, law enforcement officials told NBCNewYork.com. They said he moved to open it but noticed an SUV circling the block, so he took the bag around the corner and then found the body parts.
The man sent his son, who was along for the walk, to call police while the man kept walking the dog. Two blocks later, he found a suitcase and the dog sat next to it, and when the man opened it he found a woman’s torso, wearing a bra, law enforcement officials said.
Police later found a plastic bag with a leg and a foot inside, and nearby another suitcase with a leg and the woman’s head.
Law enforcement officials tell NBC 4 New York they found an empty box in her apartment that they believe contained a power saw. The apartment also smelled of bleach and was littered with latex gloves.

How absolutely horrible that this poor woman, someone's daughter, suffered an incredibly savage death. It's just gut wrenching to phantom. How fortunate this man's dog helped him find all of her body. It does seem odd the killer didn't just hide her remains in a dumpster, but this seems more like a game, spreading it around. Why even children might have found parts, curious about a suitcase.
This monstrous being who committed this despicable crime is lower then any life form. May this soul be at peace, her family found quickly, so she get's the tender attention deserved. The police catch her killer and he face full justice in this life and Eternal Justice when he finally dies.
I can only imagine the type of person who would, not only kill someone, but to dishonor their body by dismembering it like this and scattering it so casually for anyone to find. This man is sick, depraved, and must be found before someone else is killed. Lord knows what possessed him to do this and I can only pray for the next person who crosses his path.
There's nothing in the article to suggest the murder, itself, was savage. Granted, we all assume it was because of the dismembered body, but for all we know, she was poisoned and went quietly to sleep and never woke up.
I guess murder by poison is no biggie, then?
The guy should have called the cops on the first discovery and not touched anything else. Contaminating a crime scene is something the police don't think highly of.
There are some sick phucks out there. These were left where someone would find them. How horrible.
Ingver where in the article did it state a male committed this horrible crime. Ohhhh you just assume it is a male, what if it was a jealous wife?
Something seems a little off...he finds a bag with a shoulder and hands...then finds a suitcase, and decides to play detective and find the rest, and touches the stuff?
eh...maybe i've watched too many shows like BONES and SVU, but rule #1 - dont touch it, period.
Im sure the cops are already ahead of me on this one, but i'd keep a close eye on the guy who just happened to find all these easily findable body parts.
Sometimes, the guilty party just cant help but make sure everyone knows what they did...
WeAllHaveOpinions - statistically speaking, far greater odds that a man committed this crime, rather than a woman.
of course, it's not impossible.
I just wouldnt bet on it.
Why would anyone buy an Enquirer magazine when the regular news these days is so much more sensational?
The regular news doesn't have Bat Boy updates.
I'm curious about the SUV circling the block where all this was found. I'd track down that fellow ASAP. Yes, someone had a good point about keeping a close eye on the guy who found this, but that seems even more suspicious.
Hope he got the license plate of that SUV that was circling the block.
Agreed. Still, there's no evidence the SUV was in any way involved in the murder or the distribution of the body. It could be a simple coincidence. Let's wait and see if there is a connection with the murder. There is circumstantial evidence sometimes.
I await the outcome of the investigation.
.
why wait...when you can make an ass out of yourself right now...and get it over with...may be the three blind mice...tomorrow's headline... TAIL-LESS Mice Did It... for payback...
Didn't anyone notice, the story did say they had a suspect in custody, though they didn't elaborate on that part. More mediocre news reporting. Aside from that, considering the stories I've been reading about with regards to New York...... you couldn't pay me to even visit there. What a cesspool!
@maddog-752810
You are reading an updated version of the story. When the story first came out there was no suspect, yet. Now, they have a suspect in custody and the story has been updated accordingly.
this woman was probably a liar and a cheater and probably deserved every slash she got
I would like to know if it was a Walmart bag they found the parts in. Those damn things are everywhere.
k-mart bags are so much better...
My condolences to her innocent family members, her friends and associates.
To any possibly guilty one(s), no.
SAW13 New York style.
Amazing the levels of depravity we can fall to. I only hope the poor lady didn't suffer. I would be interested to understand how one human can do such things to others. Wonder if psychologists have a clue as to how some of us turn out like this sick one. . .
BeachBum #1.3 - Don't be specious. Of course any murder is a "biggie." I didn't say otherwise. If the murdered woman was poisoned and not aware she was being poisoned...and she went to sleep and died in her sleep, then the murder was not savage, according to the dictionary definition of the word "savage."
Dogie treats? I know, tasteless, not the treats, my comments.
This puts the term "bag lady" in a whole new context.
You know people tend to fall to pieces when people joke in these articles.
Stop it! You guys are cutting me up!
The killer is likely to carve out a place for himself in NYC criminal lore.
Well, the police have no idea who did this, so the killer has one leg up on them.
Wow, 4 unfunny comments in a row. That just may be a record.......someone died !!!
I wonder who she gave a piece of her mind to?
I stand chastised. And I agree with you ........ this is no place for cut-ups.
It is unbelievable. Some people lose their heads when commenting.
And schoolyard said 4 posts above were unfunny. Mine is the 5th, so that means mine was funny.
Jokes... you are little better than the person that committed the crime.
i'm having cold cuts for supper...
Reminds me of the 70's horror classic, I Dismember Mama.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L19u5-hNaNw
Ok, so she wasn't gunned down in NYC. What's Blooming Bloomberg gonna ban now? How about plastic bags and suitcases; that ought to stop the spread of cut ups.
Maybe it was suicide.
While jokes might seem distasteful, I think a little levity helps blunt the horror of the actual crime. Nothing said will ever change the outcome. People insulate themselves from the horrors of the world by using humor.
hahaha you guys are nuts..
Wow, how awful to have a family member die and be disposed of in such a manner. Very traumatic for those family members having to identify her remains, especially. I hope they find the killer soon.
Bombings and drone attacks do the same every day, but since it's not on American soil it doesn't matter. The body parts go into body bags, not garbage bags & suitcases though.
Hot, that would be unless the true killer is in fact a family member..
I'll say Uncle Charlie in the closet with carving knife.
Zheng,
It's called "WAR" and "Collateral damage" !!!
Schoolyard, incorrect, it's called unnatural, inhumane, and obsolete.
Wow, you're right. They have a suspect and it seems to be the woman's son! Now that makes it even more awful!!
Who leaves their home without a cell phone? He had to send his boy home. Then he keeps walking blocks away.
Regardless, it is a horrific story.
not everyone is fortunate enough to own a cellphone.
You don't have to be fortunate, government gives them out. Just saw another commercial for free cell phones for people that qualify.
Lisa, not everyone's on the dole.
There ya go Lisa those who qualify... It is like my diet, too rich to get food stamps to poor to afford the groceries.
Wow you must be super skinny then. :)
Spybear, you are correct, 1/2 of us half to pay for the 1/2 that are!
Is the fact that this guy had or did not have a government issued cell phone really that important to this story?
lisa, it's a shame there arent enough jobs for all those folks on the govt dole, eh?
then working folks like you and me wouldnt have to take care of them.
IMO - our govt should be helping people find work, not handing out paychecks.
but, in order for that to be successful, there has to be jobs to put these folks into...and there just arent.
It's absurd that we bitch round and round about who's fault it is, and it's always the other parties fault, ALWAYS.
But we never actually talk about the solutions, and pulling the plug on govt assistance isnt a solution. It's the beginning of far worse problems...unless of course, you're desperate to turn america into a 3rd world nation? I know im not.
The solutions are obvious, but of course it requires GOVT and PRIVATE BUSINESS work together...just like it requires both parties to work together.
And fat chance of that happening, because it's far more important to blame THOSE PEOPLE for all thats wrong with our nation, than to actually fix...all thats wrong with our nation. Wait, it's not more important...it's just easier to bitch and moan.
Seems to me that he sent the boy away so he wouldn't see the gruesome stuff. I imagine this kind of situation would traumatize the child.
Got the kid the h out of Dodge. That's what I would have done...
If I found any body parts anywhere I wouldn't be sending my child off to call the cops. You just don't know if the killer is still around. After all, the article said that an SUV was circling the block!!!! Scary, sad and inhumane! Whoever did this, is a pure waste of air.
I don't have a cell phone, so that doesn't bother me. What I find strange is that he kept on walking the dog instead of waiting for the police by the first bag he found. Now, that is strange!
(different Lisa)
LoveBNamom: that's exactly what I thought! His son was only 12, what if he was hurt going back to telephone? And what if he was targeted while still out alone with the dog?
I guess, though, he didn't want to leave everything and go back with his son to call in case the circling SUV was the killer and give the killer time to move all the evidence. He probably weighed his options carefully in such a dire situation, I imagine.
And how silly, the comment about no cell phone. The Bronx isn't the wealthiest section of New York, hello! He possibly couldn't afford one, or only needed one landline, or perhaps (gasp) he doesn't take his cell phone with him everywhere??? I know I don't, much to the chagrin of my husband, but I just don't need to always be available to everyone!
This guy routinely look through trash? Fortunate that he happened to stumble across the other bags full of parts.
i dont think looking through the trash is odd. But if i found a human body part in the trash, I'd stop looking and let the police do that.
I'm guessing that the dogs led him to the bags. I hope he gave the police a good description of the SUV that was circling the block, it was possibly the murderer.
Read the link I posted below, it has more details.
So the son reported the mom missing, but her place looked like she had been murdered there?
So, who lives with the mom?
Seems like someone needs to call in Benson
Police say a man in custody made statements implicating himself. And being that her son was the one that was brought in for questioning...
How can someone do that to their mom?
Sad, but not unprecedented. Remember the Menendez Brothers?
Yeah, but the dismembering part is hard to understand. Pretty cold.
mom always said he was a cut-up...
TFNJ your the type of idiot that would have walked right on by and not said anything,OH I forgot it's newyrk.
gunowner, and you're the type of idiot that gets his panties twisted over online remarks, and I know I can tease you like a girl. Go pick flowers honey.
Local news reports that the woman is tentatively identified as missing mom Tanya Byrd. An electric saw was found in her home.
http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/local/new_york&id=9007541
"Authorities believe that the remains all belong to one person"...ya think????.if not you got some serious criminal activity going on there...worse than you ever knew
Reading the local story above, this was probably done by someone she knew. Someone who knew they could take their time and dismember the body.
Why go through the time and trouble to dismember a body only to dump the pieces in a public area where they are certain to be found? Weird. Grizzly and weird. NCY must have millions of trash bins. Dump the pieces there. The odor would probably be assumed to be rotting garbage, not human remains, and ignored.
Hopefully the pieces will lead to the identity of the killer. Very sad. And, to repeat, weird.
Looking at pics, she was a big woman. Probably difficult to dispose of the body in one piece and not be noticed.
Not that either of us is an expert in body disposal! ;)
I guess if it was done in a rush, there might be more evidence with which to catch the killer. Hopefully that is true. This is a horrific crime.
I graduated from the school of Law & Order, and CSI. Took me 6 seasons to get my degree.
But that is my theory on why the killer dismembered her. And he probably knows her well, since he took the time to do that knowing no one else would walk in.
TFNJ,you are so full of it!!! You on your lunch break posting all this, einstein??
Not the sharpest tool in the shed, are ya..
"The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine a cause of death."
Hmm, might it have something to do with the fact that she was in six or seven pieces?
I know, I know someone probably killed her some other way and then cut her up, but it seems like you have at least one good theory as to why she died!
LOL!!! That was great!!!
Why cut up a body only to leave the remains where they will be easily found? That doesn't make any sense. Very gruesome. It's frightening to know that there are people who are capable and able to do this to another. I hope the monster is found quickly. Which brings up another question - was this woman a random victim or did she know her killer?
Her 22 year old son was taken in for questioning, but that was because he was being uncooperative. Doesn't mean he is a suspect. But I would think this was done by someone who knew her.
Maybe she was killed for something he's involved in? Wouldn't be the first time. That is rank speculation at this point, but I am sure the police will explore that avenue even if to put it to rest.
It's ok, that is what this site is for. Matter of fact I ask that they change the name of this site to Rank Speculation .com. lol
OOOH! I want to make that my new screen name!
did I read that right...he found some body parts then continued to walk his dog and found more further down the road? I don't think I could have just left the scene.
It read as though he continued walking the dog because he noticed an SUV circling the neighborhood. Maybe he was afraid to stop where he found the first bag in case the occupants of the vehicle decided to start firing at him.
Deleted.
catchick-Unfortunately pschopaths do not have to make sense. That is why they are psychos. If it is only one body it may have made sense to the killer about why he/she was dismembering it and putting it into different bags and suitcases.
Maybe had one of those banned supersized cokes and that did her in and the fast food restaurant had to dispose of the body.
ew gross!
Bush did it!
what man in NYC doesn't carry a cell phone?
more importantly what kid in NYC doesn't carry a cell phone?
Not sure I would open up bags and suitcases lying around unattended either.
At first they said he thought the bag had books in it.
It might just be me, but if I found body parts in a bag...1) I wouldn't just keep walking and 2)If I happened to stumble upon a suitcase a couple blocks later...I'm not looking in it! Seriously, who would want to risk seeing more severed body parts? I say the dog walker did it and is trying to mislead authorities by being the one to "find" the body.
I'd keep walking, if I noticed an SUV circling the block, maybe watching me. Better to send the boy away and keep moving as though there's nothing wrong in order to avoid attracting attention.
Not sure if I'd check the suitcase, or not. I could see avoiding it, but I could also see checking out of either morbid fear, or a need to know if the police need to be notified of the item.
That's a good dog to give such a clear signal - he has potential for further training.
Brick Top: "You're always gonna have problems lifting a body in one piece. Apparently, the best thing to do is cut up the corpse into six pieces and pile it all together." Sol: "Would someone mind telling me, who are you?" Brick Top: "And when you got your six pieces, you gotta get rid of them. Cause it's no good leaving it in the deep freezer for your mum to discover. Now, is it? Then I hear the best thing to do is feed them to pigs. You gotta starve the pigs for a few days, then the site of a chopped-up body would look like curry to a pisshead. You gotta shave the heads of your victems and pull the teeth out for the sake of the piggies digestion. You could do this afterwards, of course, but you don't want to go sifting through pig@!$%#, now do you? They will go through bone like butter. You need at least 16 pigs to finish the job in one sitting, so be warry of any man who keeps a pig farm. They will go through a body that weighs 200 pounds in about eight minutes. That means that a single pig can consume two pounds of uncooked flesh every minute. Hence the expression "as greedy as a pig"."
Snatch.
Classic movie.
Also hence the saying, "He went to sh** and the hogs ate him."
They took my arms and threw them over there, then they took my legs...................
Just speculating: this is some kind of crime of passion, maybe with a bit of a threat thrown in. Kill and dismember someone - passion and extreme hatred for the victim, ultimate disrespect - I can utterly destroy you. Then to put the pieces where they would be quickly found - either a desire to be caught and punished (possible but doubtful) or else a threat/warning to those close to her - I am dangerous and don't mess with me. Any way you go about it, someone who really needs a counseling session with the electric chair.
Nanny Bloomberg will soon have legislation on the table to ban bags and suitcases. This probably was caused by the lack of extra large sodas with lunch.
Why does no one ever think to write down a license plate number? Oh, I remember. It's NYC, where nobody owns a car and all the SUV's are driven by drug cartels and gang members, and were probably stolen in Jersey, anyway.
This woman's death is another example, "Just a bump in the road" of America's morals slipping lower and lower daily.
I'm not a detective nor do I play one on TV but I would assume by the description that she was a larger woman and someone would have had trouble moving the body intact by themself. I would also assume that they would have had time on their side allowing them to cut her up in her own home and to attempt cleaning up the scene, it seems to me that the list of suspects is relatively short. Why would the dog walker after finding the first bag with body parts in it keep looking ? I would have been busy puking my guts out. Is this a everyday occurance for him in NY not to be shaken by it that he keeps looking for more parts ? WOW
