Chardon High School shooter pleads guilty

Tony Dejak/AP

T.J. Lane is escorted into the the Geauga County courthouse Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, in Chardon, Ohio.

The Ohio teenager charged with killing three students at Chardon High School in February 2012 pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of aggravated murder.

Prosecutors said that T.J. Lane fired 10 shots at students at the suburban school outside Cleveland. Lane was waiting for a bus to an alternative school he attended before walking into the school cafeteria with a knife and a .22-caliber pistol and opening fire. Lane has admitted to shooting at students, investigators said, but did not give a reason for his actions.

Three victims — Russell King Jr., Demetrius Hewlin and Daniel Parmertor — died in the shooting.

Lane, 18, entered the plea to three counts of aggravated murder and other charges in an agreement with prosecutors Tuesday. Prosecutors agreed to agreed to remove death penalty specifications as part of the plea.

Lane will be sentenced March 19 after the completion of a background investigation, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

What's the matter? Obama's black-bag men couldn't get there fast enough to plant an "assault" weapon on the kid. Oh whatever will they do now? You can't make a big deal out of a damned .22 It just won't fit the agenda. More than likely, they'll just ignore it. Kind of like they ignore all the cases where people used a gun to defend themselves from criminals.

@Think about it-numbers - I fully believe that feel-good, band aid gun control laws will have no effect on shootings such as these. No gun control laws will stop every crime and murder committed with a gun either as most criminals don't obey the laws anyhow. Even serious background checks, psychological evaluations, enforced training for the purchase of guns will not prevent the careless and the stupid from losing control of their weapons allowingthem to get into the hands of the deranged. I think these checks and training should be put in place, it might prevent some murders, but the checks and evaluations not test each person's mind-set at the moment of purchase, not taking into account that it may change in the future. I do think there should be stiffer penalties on those people who allow they guns to be used by other family members, or those people who have accidents with their own firearms. That guy who shot that 9 year old girl at a kids halloween party mistaking her for a skunk - he should lose all his guns, pay a significant fine and go to jail for a year or two. If people want a right to own guns, they need to be responsible and be held accountable for how their guns are used, including how other people who get ahold of those guns use them. Your children find your guns in the middle of the night and kill each other with them - you should go to jail for murder. I've owned guns for nearly 40 years and not once has any of them accidentally gone off or shot another person. That saying, "Guns don't kill people," is actually true, it is the person who owns those guns who kill people, even if they aren't the ones pulling the trigger and they should share in the crimes committed with their weapons in some manner. Every person who owns a gun should be held responsible for keeping them secure from misuse and held accountable when they are misused. We have become a nation of excuses where no one is made to hold responsibility or accountability for their actions.

See, you're falling for their bull@!$%# too. I suppose if someone stole your baseball bat and beat someone to death or steals your car and mows down a bunch of kids at the bus stop. YOU should be held accountable, right??? Obviously not. That's totally ridiculous, isn't it. So why would you suggest that for a gun. Why does everyone insist on blaming the law abiding gun owners. You cannot and must not hold someone accountable for the actions of someone else. I don't care if you keep your shotgun fully loaded beside the couch. If someone steals it and commits a crime... YOU are NOT responsible. The criminal is. Focus on the source of the problem and quit looking for "convenient" sources of blame. Use your damned head for crying out loud.

@Chris-numbers - See, you're focusing on the extreme, where someone breaks into your home, steals your guns and uses them in a crime. All the trigger locks and gun safes cannot prevent that and it is NOT what I am talking about.

Lets take your example of keeping a loaded shotgun by your couch. You get up, go to the bathroom and your 5 year old daughter picks up your shotgun and blows her brains out all over your new shag carpet - THAT IS YOUR FAULT AND YOU SHOULD GO TO JAIL FOR THAT!!!

If your mentally ill son finds your guns in your closet and brings them to school and kills a dozen students. It is not like you didn't know your son's condition. You didn't secure your guns from him. That is your fault and you should be held accountable in some part for those murders.

I am not talking about theft by a stranger. I already mentioned that you cannot prevent criminals from obtaining guns. I am talking about holding a gun owner responsible for the use of his guns by himself or members of his family that could have been prevented with proper safeguards.

Pistorius is a good example of this since he is in the news. If he didn't shoot his girlfriend on purpose, if it was all a mistake - he should still go to jail because he was just too paranoid and too stupid to even own a gun.

So Khan, if your son would take the car keys from your wife's purse and he and some of his buddies went joyriding you would be okay with her being charged if they ran over someone while driving around?

You do know for example that in 2007 out of 301 million people there were 613 accidental deaths by firearms in the US? That includes hunting accidents, firearm cleaning, ect.

Parents are already civily liable for their children's actions. Making them criminally liable is a bunch of nonsense.

@Paul71-numbers - You are comparing apples to hand grenades and I would only expect the terminally ignorant to make such a comparison. Guns are specifically made for killing and cars are specifically made for transportation.

There is a difference between responsible gun ownership and irresponsible gun ownership. Those 613 accidental deaths by firearms were committed by irresponsible gun owners and those people should lose their right to own guns because they have proved that they do not take that right seriously. There is no such thing as an accidental firing of a gun. If a gun goes off, it is because of carelessness. What do you mean by a hunting accident? Do you mean mistaking a human for a deer? Aren't you supposed to know what you are shooting at before pulling the trigger? Gun going off while cleaning it... aren't you supposed to ensure that your gun is not loaded before you begin to clean it? Aren't you always, always always supposed to consider a firearm loaded at all times and not point it at another human being unless your are using it for protection?! Why are you defending the careless and the irresponsible? You would think you would want the careless and irresponsible to lose their rights to gun ownership to prevent the statistics you quote.

From what I have been reading, I guess for most people, the safest place to keep your SIG P227 is under your infant's pillow in his crib. If your infant accidentally pulls the trigger and is killed by the gun, the parents holds no responsibility for that because there was no intent for that infant to pull the trigger and kill itself. It is that infant's fault and only the infant should be held responsible for his/her actions, not the parents.

Would this follow through for the cop in NJ who when changing his cloths in the parking lot(sicko) let his gun on the roof or truck of his car(so he says). So should this cop lose his right to own or carry a gun? I say yes as there is no proof of what he says. He could have murdered someone with it then tossed it in the river claiming he lost it. If what he claims is true this is total stupidity and we don't need cops like that. Not to mention this same cop get into trouble for sleeping in his patrol car while on duty during the summer before. Just wonder how much crime in Trenton NJ or surrounding areas may have have been commited with the use of this gun. Now any criminal in his right mind (oh about 2 percent)finding out this is a cops gun would toss it. But may also just want to kill with it first and leave at scene to be traced to officer. Bet the cops would toss that one under the rug

@fishman-numbers - Yes, he was responsible for that gun, he should no longer be a cop or allowed to own guns himself. Same with those cops in California who shot up that car and wounded two people because they "thought" is was the car owned by that ex-cop who was on a revenge rampage. There were two people inside that car and both were wounded, they didn't verify that either one of those people were the suspect and even if one of them was the suspect, they would still be responsible for hitting an innocent passenger and possible hostage. They were not under fire at the time. The people in that car were just two people out for a drive taking care of their daily business and suddenly they came under fire and most likely reacted as anyone in that situation - driving to try and avoid and get away which probably spurred the police to increase their shooting of the vehicle. That, in my opinion, disqualifies those police from serving in the police force and from owning guns.

I totally agree with you on that. they should be lock up for shooting up that truck. It is amazing the excuses cops come up with. Now Obama wants us to give up semi auto weapons with a capacity of more than 7 or 10 but cops can have full auto, tanks and such. Then we have to deal with a-holes like Manuel Ramos. You need to read the motions in his trial. It seems cops think it's allright to beat you to death as long as they tell you they are going to before hand.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer is the local, city-wide newspaper. The real problem coyote is that the whole system is a joke. If he didn't get offered a plea deal, then it would be a long court process, lots of money and the change for "the prosecution to screw it up". It's always about the prosecution screwing it up because people genuinely have lost logic and common sense. When they hear- reasonable doubt, they interpret that to mean- anything is possible.

Smoke and mirrors. If he had more money, he'd probably walk because even when you're negligent at best, lie to cops and throw your child's dead body in the woods, searching for methods to kill, partying it up, creating cockamamie stories... "anything is possible" and you get acquitted. Seriously, it's really hard to get convicted for anything these days unless you're poor.

Plea agreements are probably the last method we have to have anyone take any responsibility for their actions and at least get them out of the general population.

How very tragic, three students had to die, for this messed up killer to finally get sent where he isn't going to hurt anyone else. He didn't even give a reason why. No doubt the victims families would love to find out what their children were killed for.

No "Assault Rifle" needed, did it with a .22 caliber pistol. Let's ban those too.

How bout parents keep your freaking guns locked up and away from your children. Wish the NRA (or anyone) would start a compaign about gun responsibility.

If he had only used an AR-15, he could have killed upwards of a dozen kids. My recommendation to potential school shooters: buy an AR-15 and use a pistol as backup, your kill count will be much higher and you have a better chance of making it to the next level!

AR-15 or a .22 both will kill you. If he wanted to kill more than those 3 students he would have and the type of gun would matter little.

If there's substantial evidence against him, and he has plead guilty, why are we prolonging the process of imprisonment? Didn't give a reason? I'll tell you the reason, he's a sick piece of sh*t and needs to be removed from our society!

Lane will be sentenced March 19 after the completion of a background investigation, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.

I haven't seen either movie - but 12 Angry Men is on "my list" of must-see flicks.

How about "Hang 'Em High" ?

Jasper this is not about what a parent of a murderer would want. You in that situation might want your kid to only serve three days. But if the death sentence is given for the murder of three kids you have no room to complain.

My son started attending an alternative high school after becoming completely disgusted with the pandering and disrespect he received from his "regular" teachers. Spent a year there, then went on to finish his high school classes at the local community college under Running Start, and ended up graduating with honors from the University of Washington Business School. It's good to have Alternatives - no one program is going to work for everyone. This story says nothing about this kid's reason for attending, or whether he had behavioral or substance abuse issues.

we really don't have many "school shootings" columbine and Sandy Hook yes but seeing how he only shot 3 people I'm willing to bet it was more of a domestic dispute or retaliation than indiscriminate killing. He could have easily killed dozens but apparently that was not his intention.

The Amish school that was attacked? 5 killed, 3 more injured, shooter committed suicide. An Amish school, for crying out loud! What about Virginia Tech? Or the Northern Illinois University shooting? Oikos University in Oakland, CA, just last April. Anyone have any idea how to stop it, short of making the schools into armed camps with guards at every door, bulletproof windows and fences with razor wire and guard towers? Geez...

Steve, sorry but you have that wrong. He went to a particular table in the cafeteria where a group of students were sitting. He shot at them and then left. He was picked up later by police. It was not a random shooting.

Sorry Paul, but you have that wrong...Google "tj lane picked victims randomly" and you'll see that he admitted to picking them randomly and that he didn't know his victims.

                                                            - Make more laws? And who is it that is supposed to follow the laws? Criminals? HaHaHa, silly sheeple.

                                                            - Only good people who wont hurt your children follow laws. You need to start dispatching the heinous criminals to hell where they belong, that will reduce violent crime.

                                                            Batman,

We haven't tried Gun Free zones but that does make a lot of sense. In fact our History says how effective Gun Free Zones are.

Fines of $25,000 and 10 years in Jail if you carry any weapon into an establishment of commerce; or into a state, county or federal buildings and land.

Weapons can only be carried in Vehicles when the Guns are in the Trunk, or else the same fine as above.

If you think you can leave your residence or property, and go out in the public domain you should know you risk immediately arrest, and a Large Fine an a decade in Jail.

I think that would stop people who consider carrying guns away from their homes or places of residence, to consider the Gun law penalty, on top of any other crime they maybe planning to commit.

Back when to Country was founded the 2nd Amendment gave us the right to keep and bear arms for our our protection and safety.

As the country progessed and was settled, it was a common practice to CHECK YOUR WEAPONS, when you went into Town.

Why should that same sane reasoning and logic... not apply today.

i grew up seeing guns on the back glass of pickup trucks in down town and it was never an issue. I rode in a jeep (with the top off) with an AK-47 SKS and AR-15 along with a 30/30 not in a case but right beside me standing up on end in the back of the jeep and we parked beside a cop at a gas station to grab some refreshments. The cop came out and did notice me beside the guns and he just nodded and said be careful. Nothing to it... Now if this was in a different city of the same size but where people are not use to seeing guns it could have caused idiots to flip out. Point is it is common in some places and where you are at (geography) matters. This is why "one size fits all" federal laws will not work and do not make sense. BTW the driver of the jeep was a cop just not in uniform.

A disease of a so called human being. I am sorry but I have no sympathy and I could not care less about proclaimed mental illness or anything else. Lots of us had a hard upbringing (not saying that he did) and we are not killers, drug addicts, and the like. I feel for the families and their loss. I can't imagine for one moment having to bury one of my children; I can't stand it if they get a 'boo boo' and they are 13 and 19. :)
