T.J. Lane is escorted into the the Geauga County courthouse Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, in Chardon, Ohio.
The Ohio teenager charged with killing three students at Chardon High School in February 2012 pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of aggravated murder.
Prosecutors said that T.J. Lane fired 10 shots at students at the suburban school outside Cleveland. Lane was waiting for a bus to an alternative school he attended before walking into the school cafeteria with a knife and a .22-caliber pistol and opening fire. Lane has admitted to shooting at students, investigators said, but did not give a reason for his actions.
Three victims — Russell King Jr., Demetrius Hewlin and Daniel Parmertor — died in the shooting.
Lane, 18, entered the plea to three counts of aggravated murder and other charges in an agreement with prosecutors Tuesday. Prosecutors agreed to agreed to remove death penalty specifications as part of the plea.
Lane will be sentenced March 19 after the completion of a background investigation, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

High school is tough enough without the Chardons.
Oh Sirlafalot, you are the Seth MacFarlane of Newsvine.
I would find it a bit more comical if three innocent students didn't tragically die from this incident...
You can laugh, or you can cry. It changes nothing. Personally, I prefer laughter.
"Life is a comedy to those who think, and a tragedy to those who feel." ---Horace Walpole
"Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall down an open sewer and die." ---Mel Brooks
My comment was not applied to the general public but to myself.
Sorry for the levity Steph. Perhaps you need a glass of Chardon...eh?
Sirlafalot,
Good to "see" you. I didn't know you are Canadian.
Steph, don't worry. The troll from Denver usually cuts/pastes others comments as he adds no substance to a story.Just recycled BS.................
Gee, if an assault weapons ban had been in place this could have been averted.... uh, wait minute, he used a .22 pistol.
Nevermind
...if the comment was only for yourself and not the public then why post it to a PUBLIC FORUM? Is thinking voluntary anymore?
Steph, you can say stuff to yourself in your head. Lots of people do it in mine. Hi Denver!
@Mike do you understand reading comprehension? It applies FOR me but the statement was not directed TO me. In other words ( since YOUR sense of thinking is apparently VOLUNTARY) I meant it was my opinion not to be applied to the general public. I did not find it comical. End of story.
What's the matter? Obama's black-bag men couldn't get there fast enough to plant an "assault" weapon on the kid. Oh whatever will they do now? You can't make a big deal out of a damned .22 It just won't fit the agenda. More than likely, they'll just ignore it. Kind of like they ignore all the cases where people used a gun to defend themselves from criminals.
@Think about it-numbers - I fully believe that feel-good, band aid gun control laws will have no effect on shootings such as these. No gun control laws will stop every crime and murder committed with a gun either as most criminals don't obey the laws anyhow. Even serious background checks, psychological evaluations, enforced training for the purchase of guns will not prevent the careless and the stupid from losing control of their weapons allowingthem to get into the hands of the deranged. I think these checks and training should be put in place, it might prevent some murders, but the checks and evaluations not test each person's mind-set at the moment of purchase, not taking into account that it may change in the future. I do think there should be stiffer penalties on those people who allow they guns to be used by other family members, or those people who have accidents with their own firearms. That guy who shot that 9 year old girl at a kids halloween party mistaking her for a skunk - he should lose all his guns, pay a significant fine and go to jail for a year or two. If people want a right to own guns, they need to be responsible and be held accountable for how their guns are used, including how other people who get ahold of those guns use them. Your children find your guns in the middle of the night and kill each other with them - you should go to jail for murder. I've owned guns for nearly 40 years and not once has any of them accidentally gone off or shot another person. That saying, "Guns don't kill people," is actually true, it is the person who owns those guns who kill people, even if they aren't the ones pulling the trigger and they should share in the crimes committed with their weapons in some manner. Every person who owns a gun should be held responsible for keeping them secure from misuse and held accountable when they are misused. We have become a nation of excuses where no one is made to hold responsibility or accountability for their actions.
@Chris-numbers - Hey, you do know what weapon the Mossad and the US Navy SEAL teams use for up close, silent killing/assassinations, right? Yep, .22 pistols. They are highly efficient weapons for this purpose.
See, you're falling for their bull@!$%# too. I suppose if someone stole your baseball bat and beat someone to death or steals your car and mows down a bunch of kids at the bus stop. YOU should be held accountable, right??? Obviously not. That's totally ridiculous, isn't it. So why would you suggest that for a gun. Why does everyone insist on blaming the law abiding gun owners. You cannot and must not hold someone accountable for the actions of someone else. I don't care if you keep your shotgun fully loaded beside the couch. If someone steals it and commits a crime... YOU are NOT responsible. The criminal is. Focus on the source of the problem and quit looking for "convenient" sources of blame. Use your damned head for crying out loud.
i am confused...
why does he need a "background investigation" Hes going to prision for life and what is this "Cleveland Plain dealer"? is that a news station?
Only people that could possibly find any humor here must be from 4chan, as per usual. Three people died, they will never get a chance to enjoy humor or life again if there's only one life to be had. They're dead, cold and stiff corpses now and their families distraught. Hah hah, so funny!
You said "stiff".
@Chris-numbers - See, you're focusing on the extreme, where someone breaks into your home, steals your guns and uses them in a crime. All the trigger locks and gun safes cannot prevent that and it is NOT what I am talking about.
Lets take your example of keeping a loaded shotgun by your couch. You get up, go to the bathroom and your 5 year old daughter picks up your shotgun and blows her brains out all over your new shag carpet - THAT IS YOUR FAULT AND YOU SHOULD GO TO JAIL FOR THAT!!!
If your mentally ill son finds your guns in your closet and brings them to school and kills a dozen students. It is not like you didn't know your son's condition. You didn't secure your guns from him. That is your fault and you should be held accountable in some part for those murders.
I am not talking about theft by a stranger. I already mentioned that you cannot prevent criminals from obtaining guns. I am talking about holding a gun owner responsible for the use of his guns by himself or members of his family that could have been prevented with proper safeguards.
Pistorius is a good example of this since he is in the news. If he didn't shoot his girlfriend on purpose, if it was all a mistake - he should still go to jail because he was just too paranoid and too stupid to even own a gun.
Your life must be drab if following me around on Newsvine to disparage me enriches it. If that is the case, please don't stop. I'm always willing to help those less fortunate than myself.
"He is one of those people who would be enormously improved by death." ---H.H. Munro
"Blessed is the man, who having nothing to say, abstains from giving wordy evidence of the fact." ---George Eliot
"It is dangerous to be sincere, unless you are also stupid." ---George Bernard Shaw
@Sirlafalot - Sorry, I'll use rigid next time!
I feel terrible. I don't remember hearing of this incident. So sad. Regardless of the plea deal down, I hope he gets the maximum and has to serve it consecutively.
Well, who cares, really !? I mean, this is America, where 88 people are shot to death DAILY, on average...no one really cares...hey, stand your ground, buck up and buy those banana clips,semi-auto pistols and rifles.....be thankful that the Republicans lost the Presidential election, that lying dude,Mitt Romney, when he was governor of Massachusetts, he filed and passed legislation to ban assault weapons like the ak-15, well, actually, all semi-autmatic assault type rifles...the dirt bag claimed that assault rifles are only made to kill people....WRONG...I use mine to kill salmon,in season.
So Khan, if your son would take the car keys from your wife's purse and he and some of his buddies went joyriding you would be okay with her being charged if they ran over someone while driving around?
You do know for example that in 2007 out of 301 million people there were 613 accidental deaths by firearms in the US? That includes hunting accidents, firearm cleaning, ect.
Parents are already civily liable for their children's actions. Making them criminally liable is a bunch of nonsense.
Wow Denver, you must really think your special?. I hate to break it to you but nobody follows you around. You used to write good stuff, I just get sick of the attacks with the cuts/pastes of others I know. This is a repeat because of the same BS over and over. It's obvious and it's in your court dude. I'll leave you with a quote as well.
"Denial, it's not a river in Egypt"
@Paul71-numbers - You are comparing apples to hand grenades and I would only expect the terminally ignorant to make such a comparison. Guns are specifically made for killing and cars are specifically made for transportation.
There is a difference between responsible gun ownership and irresponsible gun ownership. Those 613 accidental deaths by firearms were committed by irresponsible gun owners and those people should lose their right to own guns because they have proved that they do not take that right seriously. There is no such thing as an accidental firing of a gun. If a gun goes off, it is because of carelessness. What do you mean by a hunting accident? Do you mean mistaking a human for a deer? Aren't you supposed to know what you are shooting at before pulling the trigger? Gun going off while cleaning it... aren't you supposed to ensure that your gun is not loaded before you begin to clean it? Aren't you always, always always supposed to consider a firearm loaded at all times and not point it at another human being unless your are using it for protection?! Why are you defending the careless and the irresponsible? You would think you would want the careless and irresponsible to lose their rights to gun ownership to prevent the statistics you quote.
From what I have been reading, I guess for most people, the safest place to keep your SIG P227 is under your infant's pillow in his crib. If your infant accidentally pulls the trigger and is killed by the gun, the parents holds no responsibility for that because there was no intent for that infant to pull the trigger and kill itself. It is that infant's fault and only the infant should be held responsible for his/her actions, not the parents.
The Plains Dealer is the newspaper in Cleveland.
One more tea partier off the streets.
Would this follow through for the cop in NJ who when changing his cloths in the parking lot(sicko) let his gun on the roof or truck of his car(so he says). So should this cop lose his right to own or carry a gun? I say yes as there is no proof of what he says. He could have murdered someone with it then tossed it in the river claiming he lost it. If what he claims is true this is total stupidity and we don't need cops like that. Not to mention this same cop get into trouble for sleeping in his patrol car while on duty during the summer before. Just wonder how much crime in Trenton NJ or surrounding areas may have have been commited with the use of this gun. Now any criminal in his right mind (oh about 2 percent)finding out this is a cops gun would toss it. But may also just want to kill with it first and leave at scene to be traced to officer. Bet the cops would toss that one under the rug
You woke up this morning
Got yourself a gun,
Mama always said Id be
The Chosen One.
@fishman-numbers - Yes, he was responsible for that gun, he should no longer be a cop or allowed to own guns himself. Same with those cops in California who shot up that car and wounded two people because they "thought" is was the car owned by that ex-cop who was on a revenge rampage. There were two people inside that car and both were wounded, they didn't verify that either one of those people were the suspect and even if one of them was the suspect, they would still be responsible for hitting an innocent passenger and possible hostage. They were not under fire at the time. The people in that car were just two people out for a drive taking care of their daily business and suddenly they came under fire and most likely reacted as anyone in that situation - driving to try and avoid and get away which probably spurred the police to increase their shooting of the vehicle. That, in my opinion, disqualifies those police from serving in the police force and from owning guns.
Ban handguns.
hey takenaka...ban this...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wFYWLafVVY
TheKhanKubla
I totally agree with you on that. they should be lock up for shooting up that truck. It is amazing the excuses cops come up with. Now Obama wants us to give up semi auto weapons with a capacity of more than 7 or 10 but cops can have full auto, tanks and such. Then we have to deal with a-holes like Manuel Ramos. You need to read the motions in his trial. It seems cops think it's allright to beat you to death as long as they tell you they are going to before hand.
You will need to cut and paste as MSNBC seems to delete my posts when I link something they don't like(the truth)

@Johngis-
The Cleveland Plain Dealer is the local, city-wide newspaper. And TJ Lane is getting a background investigation because he had a very troubled upbringing and the Juvenile Court Judge wants to make an appropriate, informed sentence for his crimes. And that's the Judge's right. You're probably wondering how I know all of this?--- I'm a Chardon Hilltopper. :-D
2/27/12 Never Forgotten. One Heartbeat. <3
Well, Mr. Lane when they send you to prison, some big muscle bound black guy is going to make you his bitch!
Why black? Only blacks rape skinny white boys? Is this racist, or a statistical observation?
No sir, I think it was just a joke not to be taken out of context.
So, in your opinion, shooting three kids is a tragedy, but raping the shooter is comedy. I rest my case.
I was pointing out that it was not a race issue for the purposes of having a huge debate on why he stated a "black" man as opposed to a white one. I did not say that it was funny nor did I say that it was okay, I stated the obvious that it was a joke and it was not to be taken out of context meaning the RACE CARD.
There are more large black me in prison then large white or hispaniz men, chances are it gonna be a big black dude.
whatever, as long as it sucks really bad. Odds are a big black dude humping your scrawny white ass would suck really bad. Geesh.
Some sort of repressed fastasy of yours?
He won't get raped in prison. Haven't you heard. All you have to do is pee on yourself. Or vomit, yeah, that'll work too. Or maybe just poke them with a ball point pen.
But you'd prefer a white guy doing it to you? Is that what you are saying?
How did this become racist??? Jesus people need to grow up. The death of these innocent kids is a BIG deal. And this F**&( is getting away with it. Could have been YOUR child remember that. It could have been yours! Do you love your kids?? These parents loved theirs.
Perhaps he said "big muscle bound black guy" because it is a common thought that most black men are very well endowed. Hence, it would most definetly suck to be raped by one.
Or perhaps it is racist. Is that a possibility?
Oh you jerks when ever anything color or prez. is mentioned, whoa, whip out that race card.
So if it was me going in and I said if I have to take it I hope it is a China man, does that make me a racist? No it's just I'm play the odds. Better chance of getting a pinky-D than a anaconda-D
I bet the other kids were making fun of him for walking around Chardon wearing sweatpants.
Maybe that's why they agreed to agreed on no death penalty.
Looks like the nations budget cuts have started on this site, first with their proof readers.
He was waiting for his Short Bus to the alternative school and got pissed off. Justice better than death is he will be @ss candy for life. It is sad to see the families of the murdered kids deal with the anniversay of the shootings.....
plea should have been rejected
'Sorry bub, why should we accept from you anything other then insisting on the death penalty?'
I guess it does save mucho dinero (not Robert)
Thats whats wrong with this judicial system...Plea agreements...If he admitted it and plead guilty, then just take him out back and put a bullet thru his scrawny neck....but to allow them to always plead out either the gun or the death sentence, or whatever thats bull@!$%#...No pleas just try him and be done with it....Now little sammy down the block says well if he copped a plea out of the death penalty why can't i get away with it...
The real problem coyote is that the whole system is a joke. If he didn't get offered a plea deal, then it would be a long court process, lots of money and the change for "the prosecution to screw it up". It's always about the prosecution screwing it up because people genuinely have lost logic and common sense. When they hear- reasonable doubt, they interpret that to mean- anything is possible.
Smoke and mirrors. If he had more money, he'd probably walk because even when you're negligent at best, lie to cops and throw your child's dead body in the woods, searching for methods to kill, partying it up, creating cockamamie stories... "anything is possible" and you get acquitted. Seriously, it's really hard to get convicted for anything these days unless you're poor.
Plea agreements are probably the last method we have to have anyone take any responsibility for their actions and at least get them out of the general population.
It's Obama's fault!
Alternative school! Says it all.
No, not really. It's only because you can't leave your box.
How very tragic, three students had to die, for this messed up killer to finally get sent where he isn't going to hurt anyone else. He didn't even give a reason why. No doubt the victims families would love to find out what their children were killed for.
Sometimes cold blooded monsters really make the perfect case for abortions for those who don't believe in them the most, like me.As Agrippa said to Paul, in the Bible, Acts 26:28 Almost thou persuadest me
No "Assault Rifle" needed, did it with a .22 caliber pistol. Let's ban those too.
How bout parents keep your freaking guns locked up and away from your children. Wish the NRA (or anyone) would start a compaign about gun responsibility.
If he had only used an AR-15, he could have killed upwards of a dozen kids. My recommendation to potential school shooters: buy an AR-15 and use a pistol as backup, your kill count will be much higher and you have a better chance of making it to the next level!
"If he had only used an AR-15, he could have killed upwards of a dozen kids. My recommendation to potential school shooters: buy an AR-15 and use a pistol as backup, your kill count will be much higher and you have a better chance of making it to the next level!"
Im pretty sure movies have more of an influence on insanity than video games do.
Ummm, Adrienne Picard: The NRA has been preaching gun safety and responsibility throughout their entire history.
AR-15 or a .22 both will kill you. If he wanted to kill more than those 3 students he would have and the type of gun would matter little.
But he assaulted at least three others with it, that makes it an assault .22 pistol !!!!!!!!!!
Um, the standard AR-15 is a .22...... (.223)
Not that it matters to the three victims (RIP), has anyone heard how he obtained the .22 ?
If there's substantial evidence against him, and he has plead guilty, why are we prolonging the process of imprisonment? Didn't give a reason? I'll tell you the reason, he's a sick piece of sh*t and needs to be removed from our society!
That is a better reason than your "reason".
Oh Bob, I meant the reason of his heinous crime.
It's a little thing called Due Process...Liberals don't understand this, much like Obama and killing US civilians overseas...
WTF Pemi. Due Process is a tool of the evil, bleeding-heart, criminal-loving liberals. True patriots would have taken him out behind the gym and double-tapped him instead of arresting him in the first place.
Interesting definition of a true patriot. Reminds me of those "patriotic" guys in the old west. Did you ever see "The Ox-Bow Incident" or "Twelve Angry Men" ?
Sorry - twice in one week, I forgot to use the /sarc tag on my comment. My above comment was a typical comment used by "true patriots" on almost any crime story. Along with "gee, thanks liberals". LOL
I haven't seen either movie - but 12 Angry Men is on "my list" of must-see flicks.
How about "Hang 'Em High" ?
For the record, Pemi - I share your opinion about drones and "kill lists". But most rants against due process on these vines is perpetuated by extreme right-wing folks.
People are bitching about heavier penalties for gun related crimes and here another prosecutor did a plea on one. Why can't we enforce the laws we have and stop the pleas?
Everyone can say what they want to about what they'd love to see happen to this kid...but the fact is NONE of you would want your kid put to death if he/she did the same thing
Ban Alternative High Schools!
Let him swing. Nobody will miss him.
hadennuff, That's exactly what needs to happen. Then he will never commit a crime like this again. But the bleeding hearts will slap him on the hand and he will be free to kill another day. The bleeding hearts can blame it on the NRA. Sound about right?
You only say that cause he's not your kid...if he WAS your kid you would be begging for leniency
Jasper this is not about what a parent of a murderer would want. You in that situation might want your kid to only serve three days. But if the death sentence is given for the murder of three kids you have no room to complain.
Jasper - fair enough. Let him live, but he's now your responsibility. He stays at your house, eats your food, smokes your cigarettes, burns your mattresses and watches your cable TV.
P.S. I wouldn't let him near the cutlery - he's got a bit of a mean streak...
My son started attending an alternative high school after becoming completely disgusted with the pandering and disrespect he received from his "regular" teachers. Spent a year there, then went on to finish his high school classes at the local community college under Running Start, and ended up graduating with honors from the University of Washington Business School. It's good to have Alternatives - no one program is going to work for everyone. This story says nothing about this kid's reason for attending, or whether he had behavioral or substance abuse issues.
Send him to Rome.
Let the Vatican priests "straighten" him out.
It appears that teenagers are getting so-o-o lazy,
they don't want to go to school; . . . don't want to work;
. . . don't want to do anything. SOLUTION: kill somebody;
get convicted; go to prison; & get taken care of the rest of
their life!!
and then get raped for the rest of their lives.
why take off the death penalty? There should be plenty of evendence to convict him. Don't need the guilty plea.
Why remove the death penalty? Dollars, dollars, dollars. It's cheaper and easier this way.
He was 17 at the time of the killings, which makes him ineligible for the death penalty...just poor reporting by NBC and the AP.
Another @!$%#ing mental case that needs to be executed NOW!
You only say that cause he's not your kid...if he WAS your kid you would be begging for leniency
Another Fruitcake!
The worst part is we have so many school shootings I don't even remember them all.
we really don't have many "school shootings" columbine and Sandy Hook yes but seeing how he only shot 3 people I'm willing to bet it was more of a domestic dispute or retaliation than indiscriminate killing. He could have easily killed dozens but apparently that was not his intention.
Nope, he picked them randomly in the cafeteria before school started.
Sad to say, we can't keep track of them anymore - there were more than a few between Columbine and Sandy Hook. Remember Nickle Mines, PA? The Amish school that was attacked? 5 killed, 3 more injured, shooter committed suicide. An Amish school, for crying out loud! What about Virginia Tech? Or the Northern Illinois University shooting? Oikos University in Oakland, CA, just last April. Anyone have any idea how to stop it, short of making the schools into armed camps with guards at every door, bulletproof windows and fences with razor wire and guard towers? Geez...
Steve, sorry but you have that wrong. He went to a particular table in the cafeteria where a group of students were sitting. He shot at them and then left. He was picked up later by police. It was not a random shooting.
Sorry Paul, but you have that wrong...Google "tj lane picked victims randomly" and you'll see that he admitted to picking them randomly and that he didn't know his victims.
-!---- Because GUN FREE ZONES are working out so well ....
- Make more laws? And who is it that is supposed to follow the laws? Criminals? HaHaHa, silly sheeple.
- Only good people who wont hurt your children follow laws. You need to start dispatching the heinous criminals to hell where they belong, that will reduce violent crime.
Batman,
We haven't tried Gun Free zones but that does make a lot of sense. In fact our History says how effective Gun Free Zones are.
Fines of $25,000 and 10 years in Jail if you carry any weapon into an establishment of commerce; or into a state, county or federal buildings and land.
Weapons can only be carried in Vehicles when the Guns are in the Trunk, or else the same fine as above.
If you think you can leave your residence or property, and go out in the public domain you should know you risk immediately arrest, and a Large Fine an a decade in Jail.
I think that would stop people who consider carrying guns away from their homes or places of residence, to consider the Gun law penalty, on top of any other crime they maybe planning to commit.
Back when to Country was founded the 2nd Amendment gave us the right to keep and bear arms for our our protection and safety.
As the country progessed and was settled, it was a common practice to CHECK YOUR WEAPONS, when you went into Town.
Why should that same sane reasoning and logic... not apply today.
i grew up seeing guns on the back glass of pickup trucks in down town and it was never an issue. I rode in a jeep (with the top off) with an AK-47 SKS and AR-15 along with a 30/30 not in a case but right beside me standing up on end in the back of the jeep and we parked beside a cop at a gas station to grab some refreshments. The cop came out and did notice me beside the guns and he just nodded and said be careful. Nothing to it... Now if this was in a different city of the same size but where people are not use to seeing guns it could have caused idiots to flip out. Point is it is common in some places and where you are at (geography) matters. This is why "one size fits all" federal laws will not work and do not make sense. BTW the driver of the jeep was a cop just not in uniform.
if this story was 100% exactly the same but the perp was black this would never have made onto msnbiasc.
mark...schools are gun free zones...why do you think they are targeted.hmmmmmmmmmmm?
Seems like a lot of folks have in for you today Steph. Don't know why, didnt see anything wrong with any of your posts.
The Hell with due process we know the facts take him out back and shoot him in the head.Quit wasting money to prosecute him.
listen up folks this is the poster child of all serial killings in the US be on the lookout for him or anyone that looks like him.
Thats actually a good idea.
Another deranged liberal who snapped
What does it tewll you about our crazy country that most of us didn't even hear about this when it happened? Only three dead high schoolers not enough to get national coverage?
It was front page on MSNBC a year ago.
It was on the front page EVERYWHERE a year ago.
This is one person I am not sure that I mind feeding... Death penalty would be far to easy for this sick waste of life. A disease of a so called human being. I am sorry but I have no sympathy and I could not care less about proclaimed mental illness or anything else. Lots of us had a hard upbringing (not saying that he did) and we are not killers, drug addicts, and the like. I feel for the families and their loss. I can't imagine for one moment having to bury one of my children; I can't stand it if they get a 'boo boo' and they are 13 and 19. :)
Tony Smith-1341122: It was on the front page of the paper and on the news everyday for WEEKS.. Not sure where you live but around here anyway it was covered. My kids go to school the in district right next to Chardon. Both Chardon (Where this happened) and Chesterland (where we live) are like May-berry. NO crime. quiet, affluent homes. It is SHOCKING, SAD, and SICK.
Seriously--please never let him walk among the free ever again. Let the big boys teach him about bullying. Living through being bullied takes strength and character--getting revenge is the route of the true coward.
