Two injured in shooting at Ohio temple

Two people are injured and a suspect is in custody following a shooting in the parking lot of a Mormon temple in Columbus, Ohio, Tuesday afternoon, NBC affiliate WCMH reported.

The shooting took place in the parking lot of the Columbus Ohio Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at about 4:45 p.m.

Columbus police told WCMH they have a male suspect in custody.

He and one of the victims were transported to Riverside Methodist Hospital in critical but stable condition, according to WCMH.

A second victim was taken to Mount Carmel Hospital West also in critical but stable condition.

Excuse me? You read that story and you immediately seized on a political remark? What does this even have to do with partisan politics? Taking the location into account, it is most likely that those involved were Mormon, and could likely be conservative. But that also has nothing to do with anything. The only story here is that three people were shot. We don't know who or why, so if you don't mind, try to stick to the topic, which is very thin, since almost nothing is actually reported.

Oh, who cares...just another shooting in the good ol' USA....where, we have,on average, 88 killings every day, by gunshots.....interesting though, the Mormon connection,...gun lovers were dead set against Mitt Romney, he was that Mormon Bishop who ran for President last year....when Romney was the governor of Massachusetts, where he still lives ( has a vacation home in Calif.)..Romney drafted and proposed legislation for Massachusetts, banning the sale of assault weapons...like the A-15 used by "Chip" Lanza in the Newtown,Connecticut school massacre.

Romney was able to get his legislation passed, and, at a public signing,he boastfully proclaimed his "love" of being the governor of one of the States,Massachusetts, which has "among the toughest anti-gun laws in the nation."

You don't think Holder & Odumbass have dug as deep as they could trying to find anything on him? He has to be squeaky clean. The NRA does all the safety training for State & County Law Enforcement Organizations. So he must be held in high rearguard. So your opinion must not mean much.

Mark you should know by now that anything NBC reports needs to be verified with other sources.

The shooting was near a road behind the temple. The victims and the shooters name have not been reported. There has been no report of anyone from the temple being involved.

Do you have any more unsubstantiated bigoted comments to make?

Seems to me whats really needed is Mouth control since so many people keep shooting it off without any facts.

The reporter states the shooting occurred near a road behind the temple and you can see the area.

Just another inflammatory headline by NBC without any facts to substantiate the headline.

What does this even have to do with partisan politics?

It has to do with overtly liberal NBC shrieking every time a gun goes off, while ignoring the 100 or so people killed every day on the roadways.

Not to mention the 200+ killed every day from alcohol, the THIRD leading cause of mortality.

Steven, you're exactly right. NBC is so blatantly biased. I thought journalists were supposed to report the news and remain unbiased. But lately, journalists, so-called ones anyway, always find a way to get their political agenda involved in a story. NBC is the worst offender.

They, among many others in the media, treat Obama and his equally self-involved, self-important wife as though they are royalty to be catered to at every turn. They also turn every shooting into a top story just to get the libs all lathered up. Do they ever report on a story where people have lived to see another day because they were able to shoot a home invader who had nothing but evil intent? Nope. But these are stories that happen often and you hear most often about those from your local media station. Yes libs. Get all up in arms, no pun intended, because guns are ALWAYS going to be available to those with malicious intent. Don't blame, yet again, law abiding citizens who have THE RIGHT to defend ourselves.

Thankfully I live in the great state of Texas and not some liberal, nanny state. The first family does not impress me. And Obama is by far, the worst president we have ever had. He hasn't done a thing to help this country take a turn for the better. He is great at reading teleprompters though. And for the lemmings out there, that was enough to vote him back in. All his empty promises. Sad. All he does is campaign. I can't wait until he's out of office. Of course, how much damage can this drama king cause in those four years? Scary to think about.

Who should be arrested for allowing 2,000 guns to walk into the hands of Mexican drug cartels?

The first known ATF "gunwalking" operation to Mexican drug cartels, named Operation Wide Receiver, began in early 2006 and ran into late 2007. Licensed dealer Mike Detty of Mad Dawg Global informed the ATF of a suspicious gun purchase that took place in February 2006 in Tucson, Arizona. In March he was hired as a confidential informant working with the ATF's Tucson office, part of their Phoenix, Arizona field division.[31]

With the use of surveillance equipment, ATF agents monitored additional sales by Detty to straw purchasers. With assurance from ATF "that Mexican officials would be conducting surveillance or interdictions when guns got to the other side of the border",[12] Detty would sell a total of about 450 guns during the operation.[30] These included AR-15s, semi-automatic AK-pattern rifles, and Colt .38s. The majority of the guns were eventually lost as they moved into Mexico.[7][31][32][33]

As the later DOJ OIG Report documented, under Wide Receiver coordination of ATF Tucson with the ATF Mexico City Office (MCO) and with Mexican law enforcement had been haphazard. Discussions of getting tracking devices from Raytheon were not followed up. ATF field agents and the cooperating gun dealer had been told by ATF supervisors that the guns were being interdicted before they could reach Mexico, but only 64 of the 474 guns had actually been seized. The kingpin sought by walking the guns, Israel Egurrola-Leon, turned out to be the target of a larger drug case Operation Iron River run by OCDETF. After Operation Wide Receiver was ended, several attorneys at the Phoenix USAO who reviewed the Wide Receiver cases for prosecution found the cases had been so poorly managed that they were reluctant to bring any of them to trial.[1]

At the time, under the Bush administration Department of Justice (DOJ), no arrests or indictments were made. After President Barack Obama took office in 2009, the DOJ reviewed Wide Receiver and found that guns had been allowed into the hands of suspected gun traffickers. Indictments began in 2010, over three years after Wide Receiver concluded. As of October 4, 2011 (2011-10-04)[update], nine people had been charged with making false statements in acquisition of firearms and illicit transfer, shipment or delivery of firearms.[23] As of November, charges against one defendant had been dropped; five of them had pled guilty, and one had been sentenced to one year and one day in prison. Two of them remained fugitives

It's called investigative journalism. Or is it that the only thing NBC can do is doctor videos and mis-quote people? Is the perp an anti-religious liberal? Is the perp being charged with a religious hate crime? I can see why your type of reporting puts NBC at the bottom of the ratings along with MSNBC.

So what? That's because it deserves it. No, I'm not a libtard, nor a conservatard. Why should religion continue to get the free pass it's had for thousands of years? Why should I or anyone else respect your superstition? Because you say so? Yeah, right. "You must respect my religion" is the biggest, most sickening whine of all time. If your religion has credibility, it will stand on it's own without people like you whining and demanding respect about it. If it won't stand on its own, screw it. If your imaginary deity is so weak and small he/she/it needs people like you to defend it, well, I recommend that you get a deity with some balls who can stand on his own. Using religion or God to promote your self importance is pathological and that's what you're doing.

Religion is poison. Islam is plutonium.

          #8.2 - Tue Feb 26, 2013 10:27 PM EST

I personally believe religion should be kept out of schools. ALL RELIGIONS. And I am a Christian. But here in Texas, of all places, some middle schools and high schools are teaching their students all about Islam and calling the 9/11 terrorists "freedom fighters". SICKENING.

And who do you libs think is pushing this "political agenda"? That's right. The liberals! So y'all are okay with teaching Islamic beliefs and teaching that the nutjobs who took 3,000 innocent lives were "freedom fighters"? This may seem off topic BUT the subject of religion was brought up, so I thought I add my own 2 cents. What SHOULD be taught in schools is history as it happened, not as the politically correct want our young people to believe it happened. Indoctrinating children is WRONG. Oh, and by the way, my brother converted to Islam and I support him. But I don't support radicals in any kind of religion.

I'm not sure how you decide if a religion can "stand on it's own", but at 2000 years and 2 billion believers, I'd have to say Christianity is standing pretty well.

You're right about one thing - anyone who uses it to promote their own self importance has missed the whole point.

Gun ownership (legal, responsible) by WE THE PEOPLE certainly levels the playing field (and I'm all for that)

Some more details would be nice. It's amazing how if it's a "marketable" story how fast the media starts finding or creating details, but otherwise how they can't find their rumps with two hands. Here's hoping everybody's okay up there in Columbus.

NBC etc. make plenty of money by offering only a few enticing crumbs, especially about violence or sex combined with religion or politics, to news-hungry readers as shark hunters get lots of prey by tossing out just a little bloody bait. If people were to quit reading this stuff, things would improve.

Time for some strict gun legislation and enforcement.

Takenaka, please if you care so much about the United Sates, move here and start paying taxes and work within the system. Funny thing is if there were more enforcement you would not even have to post.

So I must live in Russia, gee, I haven't even noticed!

Simple, because they are not murder, just legal abortions done safely. Your deluded and mesianic christian half brain has not yet caught up with the law.

Try to educate yourself and stop telling people what to do with their bodies. People like you are more dangerous than the Taliban and would force every woman in the world to have children whether they want them or not, and in your holy high road would tell them to abstain from sex because it is a sin.

So I assume you are all for legalized prostitution, right? It is a woman's body and if she chooses to sell it for sex then I must assume every Pro-Choice liberal on earth wants legalized prostitution. The problem is that it is only an issue of "choice" to you liberals when it involves a choice you want left alone. Some "choices" seem to be more important to you than others.

Why do so many people get off the subject? I see nothing that any Mormons from the temple were involved. It could have been just people from anywhere got into an argument and the argument spread into a Mormon temple parking lot. Let's wait for more information on the story.

It wasn't even the temples parking lot, the shooting occurred near a road, behind the temple.

How you equate a shooting near a road behind a temple, to a shooting at the temple, must be more of that imaginative journalistic integrity of NBC.

None. Did you see any on these websites?

The NRA is of, by and for the People. And, they have the law on their side. That's what makes them so powerful.

Now, why do you suppose that there has been virtually no enforcement of the law under the NICS system, put in place around 1993 to prevent criminals from buying firearms?

The NRA has been teaching gun safety to young children since 1988. What has the left done to teach any kind of gun safety to children?

The Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program, NRA's groundbreaking gun accident prevention program for children in pre-K through the third grades, has achieved a new milestone, reaching 18 million children in all 50 states, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

Created by past NRA President Marion P. Hammer, in consultation with child psychologists, elementary schoolteachers, and law enforcement officers, the program gives children a simple, effective action to take should they encounter a firearm in an unsupervised situation:

                                              "If you see a gun,

                                              STOP!

                                              Don't Touch.

                                              Tell an Adult."

Over the years, the program has been praised by numerous groups and elected officials, including the National Safety Council, the U.S. Department of Justice, and 24 state governors. When the program was formally endorsed by the National Sheriffs' Association in 2002, Sheriff John Cary Bittick, president of the group at the time, said, "We are proud to partner with the National Rifle Association on this very important issue, and we would like to express our full support for this program. The safety of our nation's children is of paramount concern and I can think of no better way to provide them with knowledge about firearm safety than through the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program. This program, which has proven to be most effective, simply teaches children not to touch firearms and to tell adults immediately if they should come into contact with a firearm of any kind."

NRA also regularly receives letters from parents whose children have encountered a firearm, but, because of what they learned in Eddie Eagle, avoided accidents. In fact, fatal firearm accidents in the Eddie Eagle age group have been reduced more than two-thirds since the inception of the program, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. NRA feels that gun accident prevention programs such as Eddie Eagle are a significant factor in that decline.

Commenting on the program she created, past NRA President Marion P. Hammer said, "The NRA is committed to helping keep America's children safe. This program also instills in our youth the important values of leadership, discipline, and personal responsibility that will help our children throughout their lives. It is imperative that all parents be responsible for teaching good judgment and gun safety to their children," said Ms. Hammer.

Funds raised through Friends of NRA, and distributed through The NRA Foundation, enable budget-strapped schools and police departments to teach the program at minimal or no cost. The NRA encourages citizens nationwide to participate in heightening gun accident prevention awareness within their local communities. Schools, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, and others interested in more information about The Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program should call the Eddie Eagle® Department at (800) 231-0752 or visit the website at www.nrahq.org/safety/eddie.

Think they will prosecute this as a "Hate" crime since it was just an LDS church and not a Jewish Temple or Mosque?

Ban the ignorance of your statement! The country was founded on "Freedom of Religion". That means the right for anyone to believe what they want; whether you personally agree to those beliefs or not.. Don't like it, move to Russia!...

Honor, courage, integrity, trustworthiness, respect, humility, empathy, compassion and love are all noble values. Values such as these will reduce violence. These values can not be legislated. No law will change the hearts of humans.

As parents, brothers, sisters, friends, neighbors, etc we can all be examples of these values and teach others the importance of these values. The ills of a community are the responsibility of each and every member of that community. When the members of a community take on this responsibility, great things happen.

This is a solution that will reduce murders and other crimes. It has been proven effective century after century in countless places.

freddy4life you are so very foolish. That lie is long dead and buried. Get over it. President is a Christian and unfortunately they hate Mormons and always have. Many so called Christians just sided with Mitt because they are bigots and against the black man. You lost and deserved to do so and gun control is needed in this country to begin cutting down on this type of violence. This is a daily occurance in America with over 2000 dead since January 1st. It is ignorant people like you that are a problem in America today.
