Florida man shot by his dog, police say

A Florida man was shot and wounded over the weekend by his dog, who walked away without charges, police said.

Gregory Dale Lanier, 35, of Frostproof, Fla., told police Saturday that he and his dog were in their truck in nearby Sebring when the dog kicked a gun that was on the truck's floor, the Highlands Tribune newspaper reported.

The gun went off, shooting Lanier in the leg, Sebring police said.

Lanier wasn't seriously injured, said Sebring Police Cmdr. Steve Carr, who actually said police didn't arrest the dog because the investigation was pending, the Tribune reported.

He also said he had never heard of a similar case.

According to the police report, Lanier said he was driving along State Road 17 North when the dog kicked "the unloaded .380 pistol." It went on to say that Lanier was "surprised" to learn not only that the gun was loaded, but also that it was actually a 9mm weapon, not a .380.

The incident is only the latest in a string of bizarre shootings in Florida. Just last week, a woman in St. Petersburg was wounded when she was shot by a friend's oven.

Better check out this dog. A man was shot by his dog in Texas a few years ago. Same MO. Maybe he has had plastic surgery to avoid identification and is really a serial shooter. Thank God he's a bad shot.

It seems to me that one would expect these stories would occur in any given state at a ratio of approximately 1 in 50. It seems to me as well that approximately 1 in 3 of these 'events' occurs in Florida.

Is it just me?

I'm sure the dog will use the Stand Your Ground defence. The dog owner says it was a Un-loaded 380, he was shot with his Loaded 9 mil. When you don't even know what caliber of gun you own and can't tell if it's loaded or not, your a good canadate for a background check. I can tell you the maker, model and caliber of every gun I own. And I sure as hell don't leave any of them lying on the floor of my truck loaded or un-loaded.

Sarah, pretty funny stuff, but your agenda is still foiled:

Guns save good people's lives every day. My ex-girlfriend became a believer after an encounter with a thug on the beach in Galveston Texas at 11:30pm November 19th 1998. We were casually walking on the beach late at night when I had to use my .380 to stop 5 gang members trying to initiate a new 16 year old member who was suppose to "jump us" SUPRISE... his eyes could be seen a million miles away looking down the barrel... we still laugh about it today and the sight of all five them running for there lives :)

To try to put it delicately, from time to time we see news stories about (presumably) lonely men engaging in, um, certain activities with livestock. Ahem.

Do we ever see such stories on the canine front?

If so, this situation could be a case of self-defense. Was the shooting preceded by barking or howling that sounded like, "Hey, Greg, I'm not a damn sheep. KNOCK THAT OFF!!!"?

Can you seriously even believe this liberal propaganda? NO gun owner doesn't know what caliber his weapon is, and I can't think of a single pistol that can fire by being stepped on by a dog. A purely fabricated story to further the gun control agenda.

Gun control would be most effective with a stupidity test before anyone could buy or possess a firearm. That would take millions of weapons out of the hands of the type of people that would get shot by their dog.

The reason the guy didn't know the calber of the gun was that it wasn't his gun. It belonged to the dog, who DID have a CCW, and the shooting was NOT accidental. Dogs down here in Florida are smarter than most of the Northern carpetbaggers that float down South when it gets cold. No Ashley, people who want to commit murder are more likely to own a gun. It doesn't work the other way.

Statements like that remind me of the study a few years ago that concluded that men who use prostitutes are more likely to beat women. No, men who beat women are more likely to use prostitutes than men who don't beat women. It's amazing how these things can get twisted around.

Ashley, don't know where you're getting your statistics (some obscure court briefing) unless it is mainly from the some of the main stream media propaganda, but you are intirely wrong. Those with illegal (stolen) guns are the ones most likely to commit murder. As they are already criminals, they have no consience to take it a step further as well as their intention to commit a crime when stealing/buying a stolen gun. As for this story, I have seen a gun go off by simply being dropped on a rock. Remember folks, do do happens and sometimes that do do is nothing but stange bad luck.

You're obviously not averse to sweeping generalizations, are you? I could say that your post "proves once again that people who don't like gun owners use sweeping generalizations to describe 'many' gun owners" but I won't do that because I recognize that anomalies and anecdotal evidence are really not evidence of anything at all. There are millions of idiots in this world and it is just as likely as not for those idiots to own guns.

I think this is an amusing story. One stupid guy gets his comeuppance. It's a shame that the comments had to be bogged down by people who are afraid of guns.

I find the most humor in the fact that the NBC writer has written this story as if it may be remotely credible, and might be of some interest. Using the standards of this article, NBC might do a story on a lunatic reporting to police that aliens are in his attic building a space ship to return home to their planet. I cant wait to read about that! Oh wait, I forgot. The alien would have to be armed with a firearm, or even better an "assault weapon" to be news worthy. Is this what passes for real journalism? If the mans dog would have distracted him and he drove into a tree killing himself instantly, we would have never read about it. But with a gun involved ...... stop the presses. This is something that must be covered! LOL!!!! No adgenda here !!!!!

Dont be offended by the Northern and West coast liberals. Actually, its too bad the South can't secede again. We have already put to rest the evils of slavery, which in hind sight was the ONLY downfall to the Confederacy. Let me ask you this, is there really a downside to not being under the control of Washington, DC today? Washington has put America over 16 trillion dollars in debt under their leadership. They continue to borrow money like your spoiled 13 year old daughter with no end in sight. How could another "confederacy" of States do any worse than 16 trillion in debt, no jobs, soaring crime rates, and a government that refuses to do anything about illegal immigration? If you even bring up the topic, you're labeled a racist ..... I dont know, maybe there is something to that phrase "government for the people by the people" ..... maybe we should give it a try. The only downside I can see is if Florida did sucessfully secede from the Union, property value in Florida would increase so dramatically you probably couldnt afford to live there.

Other names for .380 ACP include .380 Auto, 9mm Browning, 9mm Corto, 9mm Kurz, 9mm Short, and 9×17mm. So the owner didn't know that .380 auto is the same thing as 9mm Kurz...so freaking what.

Can you seriously even believe this liberal propaganda? NO gun owner doesn't know what caliber his weapon is, and I can't think of a single pistol that can fire by being stepped on by a dog. A purely fabricated story to further the gun control agenda.

If true, he must be a liberal who knows nothing about guns. You don't even need to be a gun enthusiast to see "9mm" stamped on the side. He probably thought he owned a .380 ACP "assault weapon."

Google for the .380 ACP. The article doesn't say precisely what make & model it is, but a .380 ACP is also known as a 9mm Browning or a 9mm Short.

OK - I'll admit I know nothing about guns, but... wouldn't you kinda need to know what type of gun you own in order to buy ammunition and load the damn thing in the first place? Or do guys like this just walk into a gun store with it and say "I need those things that shoot out of this thing!" ?

                  @Darrel,

If the gun was on the floor AND it was in full battery (safety off, hammer pulled back, round in the chamber) it would not take much force to cause the trigger to activate the mechanism. Let's just say for discussion that the dog innocently had one of his paws on the trigger and guard, truck swerves to avoid a pothole, the dog shuffles to maintain an upright position, bang. Seems possible to me.

But the stupid gun owner should not be driving around with a gun in full battery in my opinion, besides not knowing the caliber. What a piece of work.

I am really not sure what this has to do with guns, if this man is this irresponsible - why is he allowed to own a car and a pet?!

Do you think stupidity extends only to firearms when he is directing a several thousand pound vehicle down a highway with CHILDREN nearby?

Will removing only is guns suddenly make this man an intellectual dynamo, capable of safe and rational use of all of his machinery, and exercising good judgement at all times?

Its funny to see so many of you assume he is stupid because he is a gun owner, and then support gun control. You need to realize he is stupid and happens to be a gun owner, but that his stupidity is not dependent on his property ownership!

Huh, so if a gun owner pulls out a gun to protect his family from an intruder, but somehow the intruder takes the gun away from him cause it's not secure. Then uses it to murder everyone in the house, the gun owner should still be charged? For some reason, I think your light bulb went out a long time ago, may be its time to change it.

Maybe they didn't arrest the dog because he didn't have his papers and the police would get accused of profiling or they knew ICE would just release him any ways claiming they can't afford to incarcerate him because of budget cuts.

Funny that the reporter doesn't specify the dog's breed. Apparently the type of breed isn't relevant unless it's a pit bull because, you know, they are more dangerous to society than dumb idiots leaving loaded guns on the floor of their cars pointed at themselves. Just an observation.

Well, if we're on the subject of saving one child's life, then we better be neutering all of the dummies like this Florida man who does not have enough common sense to properly secure his firearm. What if it had been a child in the car instead of a dog? People need to wake up and look at the more prevalent danger to society--improper care of firearms, not dog attacks.

Hate to break it to you.

                                        But a 380 is a 9mm caliber weapon . 9mm KURZ

                                        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.380_ACP

If you need help with the concept ....imagine a 9mm short .

And this is a example of the rabid stupidity used by the anti-gun community to write new laws.

"It went on to say that Lanier was "surprised" to learn not only that the gun was loaded, but also that it was actually a 9mm weapon, not a .380."

These, experts, feel empowered to write new firearms regulations.

How long has the anti-gun community been around?? Why can't they get firearms history right??

If you oppose something, shouldn't you study the object of your activism first??

Or do you think ignorance on the subject, is a plus when writing new laws and regulations??

I oppose the ease with which guns can be bought by people who are not qualified to handle guns.

This fellow, who was shot by his dog, does not know how to handle a firearm. If he had not been shot, some whacko walking along would have seen the gun on the floor of his truck, and stole it.

But that's OK, the guy could just go out and buy another one.

In popular nomenclature, "9mm" refers to 9x19mm Luger (Parabellum), not .380 ACP (9x17mm). There are a large number of other 9mm cartridges, but only one is known as "the" 9mm.

Yes, that's an alternate name for .380, but it's seldom used. Walk into any gun store and ask for 9mm. They'll give you 9mm Luger, not 9mm Short, 9mm Makarov or any other 9mm.

Walk into any gun store and say 9mm Kurz, Short, Makarov (especially, casing) , and they give you 9mm Luger???

Advice, NEVER go back there again. They do not know weaponry, and should not be in that business.

But, legislators & activists , should study their subject . It is after all, their business.

By the way, 9mm Kurz is how the round is referred to in Europe.

I recommend , the end of plea bargaining & parole with every violent criminal. Release, if needed the non - violent early.

I recommend enhancement of our mental health care system , and research into drugs that might be attached to reported tragedies.

Scar is right. 9mm Luger and .380 ACP (aka 9mm Short) are both technically 9mm.

I think his original point was that the media wants to make this guy out to be a bigger idiot than he is, and by extension smear gun owners as being too stupid to even know that caliber their firearms are.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not sticking up for anyone who is driving around with a loaded handgun, or anyone who doesn't have their firearms safely controlled. However, the media is trying to paint this guy (and by extension all gun owners) as not even knowing what type of guns they own - when the fact is the .380 ACP is widely known as a 9mm Browning or a 9mm Short.

Al Kyda is kinda correct in one context - if you walk into a store and ask to see a 9mm handgun, they are unlikely to grab a .380 ACP - they are more likely to think you want to see a ''real 9mm''. However, if you have a .380 ACP in hand and refer to it as a 9mm Browning, they are also not going to correct you either.

                                        So,
                                        1) there's no excuse for driving around with a loaded weapon
                                        2) there's no excuse for not knowing if your weapon is loaded or not
                                        3) there's no excuse for a 'journalist' who misleads people into thinking this guy didn't know his caliber

Can you think of any way to let responsible people have guns, and for irresponsible people to not be able to easily get guns?

Forget about the 2A. Let's pretend that we are writing the constitution for a new country (not the US, some country in central Asia). We want to balance gun ownership with public safety.

What kind of law could we write that would allow responsible people to easily get guns, and people who do not demonstrate a 'certain level of responsibility' to not be able to buy guns.

                                        davey-526272,

Thailand has a few simple Gun Laws:

                                        1. Possession of a unregistered Military style gun = LIFE in JAIL...

                                        2. Possession of a unregistered gun 32cal or below = 5+years in JAIL or LIFE - if larger caliber...

                                        3. Possession of EXCESSIVE amounts of ammunition = 5+years in JAIL...

                                        4. A person can only obtain a weapons permit/registration, if they can PROVE a need for it...

                                        5. Foreigners can NEVER possess LEGAL guns...

BTY - Thailand's Violent crime rate involving a gun is 5x the USA rate and the average gun cost over 5x what it would in the USA...

After the National Thai Elections - A person fired a unregistered pistol into the air. The bullet came down, went through a tin roof and KILLED a sleeping child. Using Bangkok's CCTV and microphones, the POLICE located and CONVICTED the person that fired the shot...

Walk into any gun store and say 9mm Kurz, Short, Makarov (especially, casing) , and they give you 9mm Luger???

No, I wrote "ask for 9mm." If you ask for 9mm Kurz (Short), hopefully they'd give you that, but you're better off asking for .380, the designation far more popular in the US.

AC, I would say that Thailand has a gun problem.

Closer to home, when Canada enforced stricter gun laws, their murder rate went down.

The point is the author of the article was trying to make the gun owner appear even more stupid by saying that the gun was a 9mm and not a .380, when all he accomplished was making himself look stupid because a .380 round is 9mm.

The NRA says that we should enforce existing gun laws, not burden citizens with additional restrictions. Unfortunately, there are no laws against irresponsibility or stupidity.

                                            Can't beat the classics.

Of course you totally miss the point that police are just as human and fallible as everyone else, after all they were private citizens at one time, and will be again, and even with all their training, even they can make a mistake.

Just because you have seen it a thousand times doesn't mean every else has.

Here's another classic for you, a little off topic, or is it, considering NBC is posting every gun story they can to support the lefts agenda?

The Wave, is a short made-for-TV movie directed by Alexander Grasshoff, based on Ron Jones' The Third Wave experiment. Though more prominently featured as an episode of the ABC Afterschool Special series, this show debuted October 4, 1981, almost two years before being featured in the Afterschool Special series.

It starred Bruce Davison as Ben Ross, a character based on Jones.

Writer Johnny Dawkins was nominated for a 1982 Humanitas Prize in the 60 minute category, and a 1983 WGA Award for Best Children's Show.

1981 - Based on the real experience of a high school class in Palo Alto, CA in April 1967, whose teacher wanted to explain the rise of the Nazi party to his students.

How many people out there know that almost all mass media in the U.S. is owned by only five corporations?

                                            http://vigilantcitizen.com/vigilantreport/mind-control-theories-and-techniques-used-by-mass-media/

Mass media and propaganda are therefore tools that must be used by the elite to rule the public without physical coercion. One important concept presented by Lippmann is the “manufacture of consent”, which is, in short, the manipulation of public opinion to accept the elite’s agenda. It is Lippmann’s opinion that the general public is not qualified to reason and to decide on important issues. It is therefore important for the elite to decide ”for its own good” and then sell those decisions to the masses.

In the past, when changes were imposed on populations, they would take to the streets, protest and even riot. The main reason for this clash was due to the fact that the change was clearly announced by the rulers and understood by the population. It was sudden and its effects could clearly be analyzed and evaluated. Today, when the elite needs a part of its agenda to be accepted by the public, it is done through desensitization. The agenda, which might go against the public best interests, is slowly, gradually and repetitively introduced to the world through movies (by involving it within the plot), music videos (who make it cool and sexy) or the news (who present it as a solution to today’s problems). After several years of exposing the masses to a particular agenda, the elite openly presents the concept the world and, due to mental programming, it is greeted with general indifference and is passively accepted. This technique originates from psychotherapy.

Thanks for the suggestion Jody. I just finished the Hunger Games trilogy a little while ago. I'm afraid for the last few years my head was in C#, C++, Java, HTML/XML, Introduction to World Religions, etc text books.

I looked it up and it sounds similar to Demolition Man, Logans Run, George Orwells 1984, etc. I keep hearing the term Soilent Green once in awhile and think I will look that up also. I used to be big into Robert A.Heinlein and Piers Anthony. Jack London is one of my favorite authors.

I always say be sure your gun turns on you and yours, not me and mine. Apparently in Florida this is working!

When are we going to pass laws to keep guns out the paws of these unstable dogs! What if the dog had shot someone in school? Congress please act now!

Wait just a minute. If we don't allow all dogs to have guns, then only bad dogs are going to have them!
