Winter storm drops snow from Missouri to Maine

Sydney Brink / Sedalia Democrat via AP

Tedd Hendrix, of Sedalia, Mo., frees a line of cable from downed branches Tuesday as he works to tie the line off so that it is elevated and out of the road. A snow storm, the second in less than a week, dumped about a foot of snow in Sedalia, knocking out power around the town and collapsing the roofs of several buildings.

A winter storm coated a swath of the country from Missouri to Maine with snow Wednesday, and forecasters warned of difficult travel.

About 100 flights into and out of Chicago’s O’Hare airport were canceled by midday, according to FlightAware.com, on top of more than 500 the day before.

Chicago had almost 5 inches of snow Tuesday, bringing its total for February to 14.9 inches and ranking it among the 20 snowiest months on record, according to NBCChicago.com.

As the storm moves east, it is expected to dump 6 to 10 inches of snow Wednesday and Thursday from the Allegheny Mountains of western Pennsylvania through the Adirondacks of upstate New York and into interior New England.

Full coverage from Weather.com

It is the same storm system that blasted the Rockies and the Great Plains earlier this week, packing hurricane-force wind gusts and shutting down travel in Kansas, Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle.

“It has a couple of jabs yet, especially for New England,” said Weather Channel meteorologist Tom Niziol.

In the Midwest, the National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings for Wednesday — some stretching into Thursday — for parts of Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin and Michigan. Heavily populated areas, including Milwaukee, suburban Chicago, northern suburbs of Detroit and Des Moines, Iowa, were also under warnings.

In the Northeast, the storm was expected to bring snow and ice to New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and parts of Maine through Thursday afternoon.

New York and other major cities such as Boston were forecast to mostly escape the heavy weather. But commuters in New York slogged through heavy wind and rain to get to work Wednesday. Upstate New York and northern parts of New England were expected to see further snow through Wednesday into the evening.

“It’s going to linger for a long time over portions of the Northeast,” meteorologist Brian Korty told Reuters.

The storm's biggest impact has been in Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma, though. In Texas, winds gusted to 84 mph near El Paso, according to Weather.com, which reported 7-foot snow drifts in Silverton, south of Amarillo.

The 19 inches of snow in Amarillo on Monday set a 120-year record, meteorologist Krissy Scotten told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth. The city in the Texas Panhandle usually sees an average of just under 18 inches for the entire winter, Scotten said.

To the east, parts of Missouri got more than a foot of snow, and Kansas City had 8 inches with more falling Wednesday morning.

Here in fly over country (Wisconsin) we call this kind of weather, wait for it... winter. It's February, it's cold out and it's snowing, yup, it's winter, and it's been doing this for millenia.

Wonder who is REALLY going to end up with all those billions of dollars??? I'm guessing it won't be third world countries.

Touching any fallen wire without perfect surety of what you're messing with is risky business.

Even coaxial (which this wire appears to be) or aerial telephone wire can be lethal if the strand to which it's attached at the pole isn't properly bonded to ground and becomes "hot" due to induced power or a fallen power line - possibly hundreds of yards away where you can't see it.

Many aerial cables have a support wire which is directly connected to hardware mounted to that strand- so if the strand is energized, anyone touching a fallen wire may die.

If you don't happen to have a hazardous voltage detector, (like this one, in common use at several of the baby bells: http://www.specialized.net/Specialized/Fluke-C9970-High-Voltage-Detector-247.aspx) call the fire department- they have them.

If you have the acumen required to identify the wire and you can afford to wait a day or two, call the associated utility.

      #2.5 - Wed Feb 27, 2013 9:29 AM EST

Important addendum: no fallen power cable should ever be touched by anyone but the power company- even the fire department leaves that task to them, and only cordons off the area to keep the suicidally curious at a safe distance.

While this seemed obvious to me, there's inevitably going to be someone out there who didn't know better- and now, you do.

FeO2 - you are technically right. Never should touch any downed wire, but in this case it is a telephone or cable tv like you said, so not to worrisome for those talking about Darwin Awards. Which I will point out if it was live and he was a lucky nominee to get a DA you wouldn't see a picture of him holding the wire as he would already be flat on his back.

At any rate this snow is crazy. Lot of late winter action this year.

Scotty...you really shouldn't mock things you can't grasp.

Weather in general is tough- let alone global warming, which involves large scale chaotic turbulence and other really abstract concepts.

A good place to start gaining a basic understanding of global weather patterns is this book, written just for people like you: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/80654.Heaven_s_Breath .

Here's the basic idea, in the simplest possible terms: heat is energy.

More heat yields more energetic or frequent weather systems, including hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, and blizzards.

Other obvious and well documented effects: deserts grow, while glaciers, permafrost, and polar ice caps melt.

I could provide you with further proof to ignore...but I'm likely not the first person to annoy you with facts- and there's no helping the willfully ignorant.

                  #3.5 - Wed Feb 27, 2013 9:55 AM EST

You're not providing proof of anything. What kind of heat are you talking about? Sensible heat, latent heat, specific heat? Arctic fronts will have cold and dry air and will usually not have much wind or snow. Storms that come out of the Southwest, like these last few, will have much warmer air and hold more moisture to begin with and release more latent heat. THAT is what makes for strong storms. This is what happened with Hurricane Sandy rode all the way North on the warm Gulf Stream and then ran into a large cold high pressure area. Strongly contrasting air masses make for strong storms.

Fe - Thanks. Rex what I believe FE is talking about is additional trapped heat in the atmosphere from greenhouse gases. More heat into the atmosphere can make it more unstable. This would be heat that comes from solar radiation, the primary source of all Earth's heat and energy in one way or another. I'm not arguing either-way here as the subject is so toxic anymore (beside there are plenty of other side effects, not just global warming, from our activities that we can and should be cleaning up and be more responsible for, and I also know we can't ditch FF overnight at the same time here) but just saying what I think Fe was referring to.

Rain won't crush your roof- snow might if it doesn't have a steep enough pitch.

That's why A-frame construction is popular in alpine areas- A-frames shed snow.

I'll take rain, having lived with both rain and snow- and ice.

Once again an overblown story. What's the guy standing in? About six inches of snow. Lines go down all the time and from what I can tell in the picture it is one very small wire. This is news? Six inches of snow happens all the time. Here in Chicago they are saying how much snow we got on the news. I look out my window and it is about three inches. I live on the north side where we've been told it snowed more. I can't trust that there was a foot of snow anywhere in Illinois as it has been reported. Weather news has become such a waste of time. News in general has gotten bad but weather news leads the way in being overblown, over-hyped garbage.

Looking out our window at our driveway where my son is snow blowing, the end of the driveway is at least 4 feet high and the driveway itself has at least 18 inches to shovel. Go back to bed. No school, no work, all roads are blocked in our town. Good old Wisconsin. Our weather people in Milwaukee were right on.

I hope he is- otherwise, he's being suicidally idiotic.

Even low voltage lines can kill you if the aerial support strand to which they are attached has high voltage on it due to a bad ground bond- or fallen power out of your line of sight.

Cable TV wire may have 110 VAC on it too- some line amplifiers are powered through the big coax cable on the pole, and that may bleed over to drop wire like the one this guy is monkeying with. If your feet are wet and you're grounded, "low voltage" may kill you.

Leave it to the pros or have the fire department evaluate it.

I know one other person who tried this dance and we all refer to him as RIP. Noticed he has his work gloves on. I know what he is doing. He is going to stand out there all day and hold the wire up for others to drive under, until the utility truck comes to fix it. He deserves a metal for his valor.

Or at least overtime if he works for whatever utility that owns the line.

It amazes me that so few people posting here realize that there are people in this country that actually know what they're doing around fallen cables. It appears to be in a rural area and most non-urban dwellers are pretty self sufficient. Please stop calling someone stupid based on a photo.

Having said that, long live Al Gore and his hot air cronies. May the snow ground his private jets forever and a day.

Slow news day. No Korean missiles, Iran is quiet and no mass shooting somewhere in the word (that we know of - Syria maybe). It's this media obsession to sensationalize everything and try to make news where there is no news.

Yep I agree. Here in Maine we call 12" a dusting of snow. Heck, weather is weather. Don't get your whities in a bunch over it. Stock up on hot cocoa, good books, snack food, and ride it out. Heck, 6 months from now they're gonna complain about a heat wave or something. People, people, it's weather. Get excited about stuff you can do something about

Yeah, weather only barely qualifies as news.... but it's way more interesting and useful than the results of some silly poll.... which is not news of any significance. Lazy reporters.

                                            @Ia. scooter and Carol

It doesn't matter how many people live in the higher elevations. Like a good little low informed persons of the GOP base, you both missed the whole point.

People from the mid-west live with the fact it snows at winter time, same as the people in the PNW. But the East coast flakes complain when they get several inches of snow, and have their hands out, wanting someone to help them.

Get a life you two, it's still winter time and snow does come down at times, and yes, there is even blizzards that happen. Course Carol from Sc may never have been in a blizzard, and a couple of inches of snow may make her think she has been.

Yep, you are correct scooter, we do get some rain here, and we have very mild winter weather, most of the time. But we don't need you out here enjoying it, we have enough transplants from CA living here now.

So now you just might understand that some people make fun of the crybabies living on the East Coast. You can't handle that, TS to both of you.

I used to live in the Bronx and obviously since you act ignorant ill tell you it one of the 5 borrows in New York, I experience rough weather during the winter and my family which includes me NEVER asked for a hand out. But im pretty sure you going crying for help everytime there is a snow storm or maybe a single drop of rain.

So before you go opening your mouth open again and make me laugh at your a__s think before you speak. and try to make a decent comment because i claim the 1st right as do scooter and Carol

                                              GA Carol

Scooter knows I am down here and been here since Oct 2011. Expecting to stay 'til 2016. Average weather temps 80s winter months Dec -March; 90s March-July; Hi 90s-low 100s Aug-Sep. Too far east for hurricanes but they start here as Depression or light Tropical Storm, winds 30-40s during that event. Otherwise sunny days, clear/partly cloudy nights and showers inland higher elevations (800 feet) I live on a hill that overlooks Caribbean/waves of 6 inches, with Atlantic Ocean on east coast/waves of 5-10 feet. So, cool Caribbean on west coast, surfing on east coast and the island is 30 miles long by 15-20 miles at its widest. Seafood is awesome and Rum is fine any time of year (with many other delightful libations too!). Almost feel like Robin Leach - if you remember who he is! LOL

My hometown is Jax, FL, just down the coast abit from you.

WOW darn that is cool. I would love to visit some day. Jacksonville is also cool, I love going to the beach parties where they closed off the streets. My hometown is Okeechobee, lol no comments now. Anyway I am now in South Carolina and love it. Most have no idea where Okee is...

Absolutely, know where Okee is. I believe there is a prison on the North Shore area as I used to travel that route from west coast to Port St Lucie from time to time. It was usually in that area I would stop for a cool liquid refreshment and also admire that portion of the lake. Whenever I fly North from Miami to Jax, I always sit on the side of plane that allows me to view the lake. Just amazed at how big it is, especially after a wet year.

Jax Beach is a blast around March-July for all the festivals - Beach Opening weekend etc. The Freebird is a good hangout too. Thanks for vistin' and I get a kick out of you and Scooter's repartee on various things. Usually, if we can find a comedic comment from the Vine, we all roll with it to one liners that crack me up! Oh yeah, off work and enjoying the breeze along with a Lemon Drop libation! Yum

Going to the okee in April on the lake for a week. Also going to the everglades, I love the outside weather, and a air boat and the everglades will be awesome. My brother in law has an air boat, plenty of booze and crazy days again. The lake on land when you look at it is like looking at the ocean some can not realize this when I tell them how big it is. Allot of memories at that lake good and bad lol.. BTW I use to live in Port St Lucie as well near the Mets training camp, I could walk there from my home.

SallyAnne, whats with the Boston bashing? I haven't seen or heard anyone around here "whinning and crying" about snow.

Most Boston area folks, (except the elderly of course) actually like the snow. I won't say we are sorry when it finally melts, and spring arrives. But no crying in winter snow storms...

And you know, we actually know how to drive in the stuff!! (well, most do)

I'll only assume its because of the "huge" populations, and larger industries and infrastructure that sometime gets effected here. Where the plain states are so less populated.

More people, more schools, more business, more hospitals, more stuff = more problems, I guess.

I didn't mean the comment was rude..in fact it was right on.

I was trying to say that its rude to be "dissin" the plain states.

I know where my food comes from, and Thank You kindly..

I Love the Midwest, and West.. I may live and work in the city, but I travel every chance I get out west, and usually drive. My son lived in Colorado Springs for 6 years (less two in Iraq) and I have driven east to west, and back again over a dozen times. I love the Heartland!

Oh I am so sorry, please accept my apology. Some times it's hard to read where people are going with their comments. People get so worked up about snow headed to the northeast in the winter. It's like getting all excited about a tornado outbreak in May in Oklahoma! Duh oh (I live in Oklahoma and lived thru the May 3, 1999 tornado lived here all my life so ehhh you learn to take cover and pray!). And please tell your son thank you for his service to his Country! :)
