Boston fraternity raises more than $16,000 for brother's sex change surgery

Donnie Collins, a transgender student at Emerson College in Boston, Mass., uploaded a message to YouTube on Monday thanking his fraternity brothers for launching a campaign to raise funds for his gender confirmation surgery.

A fraternity at Emerson College in Boston, Mass., has raised thousands of dollars for a transgender member's sex change surgery after the procedure was denied by his student health insurance plan.

The brothers of Phi Alpha Tau have received more than $16,000 in donations for Donnie Collins, 20, a sophomore pledge seeking female-to-male gender transition surgery to remove his breasts.

"It's been an amazing experience, these last few weeks," Collins said in a video (above) uploaded to YouTube on Monday. "My life has been absolutely changed by pledging this fraternity."

After his insurance company reportedly denied his claim for gender transition surgery, Collins' fraternity brothers banded together to help. They launched a pledge campaign Feb. 9 on IndieGoGo, a crowd-funding website, setting an initial goal of $4,800 -- later boosted to $8,000 -- to cover Collins' chest reconstruction.

"We care deeply about each and everyone, and rely on the entire active brotherhood to stand behind any one individual when they are in need," the participating brothers wrote on the IndieGoGo campaign page.

The Phi Alpha Tau brothers took in $2,000 in online donations in just over a week, Collins said in his YouTube video. By Tuesday, they were at $12,000, and the campaign crossed $16,000 Wednesday.

The campaign's managers announced Wednesday morning that they plan to donate all the excess cash to the Jim Collins Foundation, a group that "raises money to fund gender-confirming surgeries for those transgender people who need surgery to live a healthy life," according to the organization's website.

Collins came out as transgender while a student at a Windsor, Conn., boarding school, he told WHDH, an NBC affiliate in Boston.

"Coming out was a huge relief to me," Collins said.

"I knew right away that I wanted a name change, hormone replacement treatment" and gender reassignment surgery, he said.

Collins told WHDH that the procedure, which is scheduled for May, marks an important step in his gender transition.

"You're the one that puts your head down on the pillow at night," Collins said. "You have to be able to look in the mirror at yourself every day for the rest of your life. So, make choices for you first and then other people second."

So if instead she had Body Integrity Identity Disorder, would she want the insurance to pay to electively remove one of her limbs? And why is thinking that your leg is not right and needs to be removed from your body a disorder, but thinking that you should be the opposite sex and wanting your sex organs removed not considered a disorder?

Everyone should support people that want to have their leg removed if they have BIID, just as they do people that want transgender surgery.

Jim

Because it's not a disorder.... just like being a homosexual isn't a disorder. It's the way their brain is hardwired. Surely you understand the difference. Then again you might believe in god which would explain a lot.

He is transgender he has both parts! this is not a woman wanting to be a man this is someone who has both sides and wants one side removed so he can live his life as a man and not a woman. This isn't about homosexuality or gender bending this is someone who is truly on the fence and picking a side.

So someone who's brain is hardwired to think they should be a different sex and wants to cut off parts of their body does not have a disorder. But someone who's brain is hardwired to make them think that their leg is not theirs and wants to have it cut off has a disorder. Sure, makes perfect sense to me.

cnborjas...Actually, if you read the article, that is not correct. He is not a hermaphrodite, he is having female-to-male reassignment surgery. I personally think it's great that he has so much support from his friends and community, and like big picture I am a proud Bostonian, born and raised.

Jim he's not hardwired to think he is a different sex. He most likely has all the male parts but from the article has grown breasts once he was older and found that he was releasing lots of female hormones. He wants to stop this and his insurance said this is not covered he frat brothers said 'hey that sucks lets do something to help.' why is there a problem here?

ECF

to cover Collins' chest reconstruction.

this and hormone therapy are the only things that he is looking to have done. Hemaphrodite does not mean everything is fully developed.

#1.12 - Wed Feb 27, 2013 3:14 PM EST

There is no mention of her being a hemaphrodite in the story. The story is clearly about a female that wants to have gender "confirmation" surgery to have her breasts removed. She does not have any male sex organs at this time. It might be confusing to you because they constantly refer to her as "him", "his", or "he" because she identifies as male.

  • 21 votes
#1.13 - Wed Feb 27, 2013 3:23 PM EST

You could be right Jim I was under the assumption that the term "him", "his", "he" made me think that this was a hermaphrodite case. the article is a little misleading here if that is the case. She wishes to identify herself as a male would definitely not correspond to one being a male.

cnborjas - He most likely has all the male parts but from the article has grown breasts once he was older and found that he was releasing lots of female hormones.

Ummmm......no. He's got female body parts and a male brain. It's far easier (and more ethical) to rewire the external genitalia than to rewire the brain.

She wishes to identify herself as a male would definitely not correspond to one being a male.

Actually it does. What's in your head is where your gender identity resides, not what's between your legs.

You might want to google "gender dysphoria" to learn about the issue.

I dunno, they're talking about chest reconstruction and hormone therapy only?

Did he already have genital reconstruction? Or is he just not going through with that? Medical writers, figure out what the hell you want to say.

As far as gender dysphoria, etc. being a disorder, yeah, it is. It's treatable by making the physical body match up to what the brain thinks should be there, since rewiring the brain is impossible with our current technology, and has more unethical probabilities than the other option even if it were possible.

BIID, well, it seems they prefer to treat it without amputation, if possible. Then again, I see no reason not to allow a person to become an amputee. Just so long as they can't choose that for anyone else, and won't end up being a burden on an unwilling third party. Amputation does have physical drawbacks related to functioning afterwards that transsexual surgery does not. If a person wishes to be a quadruple-amputee, I'd say they'd better have somebody that can take care of them lined up afterwards. If everyone's on board, then go for it.

if that sounds gay, u have absolutely no idea what this is about. thousands around the world have this surgery done yearly. male to female, female to male. it has nothing to do with gay, str8, bisexuality. it has to do with what the inner self feels and knows, that somehow an outward looking male or outward looking female is really the opposite in their minds and heart. do some reading, it wont kill you.

I'm just glad that someone had the intelligence to not burden the health coverage with this. If this things "Brothers" want to raise money for it fine. I personally do not necessarily care to read about this stuff, but hey since the headline was there, my morbid curiosity got the better of me. More power to those involved with this, but I hope it is the last we hear of this story and that the story line dies out quickly so that we can get back to more important issues like the state of this nation.

I'll save my donations for real emergencies such as hurricane/tornado/wild fire relief. And the little 6 year old boy/girl here in Colorado is rather weird. But the mother said she would home school her kid and I think that is a great idea. Or else schools will be required to build unisex bathrooms next which is more money taken away from a strapped education system.

think it through somewhere there is a man that wants to be a woman and can use those breast you need to start up a donor club, don't throw them away! besides if its a match maybe you can get his penis , that will make the transformation complete and a real penis might even work? and all the girl stuff could be sold with the breast. in a few decades people will be able to just swap heads. how many starving people will be saved by this surgery? now that I think about it somewhere there is a man that wants to stay a man but would still love to have some real working female breast and some hopeful students that want to become Seurgons that can use the practice if everyone would just work together and start up a live donor program allot of financial obstacles can be overcome you have to think beyond the crotch. its possible we can even do some mix matching for the more adventurist type, maybe set you up to be a super sports model capable of serving six at a time 3 of each oh wait some people already have that going for them but not multiple organs on the one person, this is endless imagine the possibilities we need a national donor tissue program and a swap program no s#it. then there are the glands that produce the hormones that you will need so you don't have to mix hormones you guys can swap glands, crotches, breast, other related sexually orientated body parts, advance the science and possibly lead to brain transplants, wouldn't it be cool if you could pick out your body from a lineup of potential matches for your brain, and even change your sex to strike your mood for that year. and if you decide you don't like your new sex as much as you thought you would it will be much simpler to change back if you have your brain rigged to plug and play. that could be the normal in the future. but for now you need to get on the Ellen show and rack in some bucks. change takes time.

It is awesome of his fraternity to treat him this way and not only accept him but help him with the expenses that will be involved in removing his breasts. It's a shame that more people don't accept people how they are whether you approve of it or not. It isn't your place to approve of what other people do with their lives and Jim, he's not suing the insurance company to change their policies so the whole leg thing, which isn't a disorder, doesn't matter.

Some pretty blatant ignorance in some of the posts here. Transgender means someone has body parts that don't match their sex. In most cases this means they are infertile as well. These people are trapped in-between-sexes. This is not a sex change operation, it is a choice to correct what nature got wrong. Typically this occurs when two sperms, one male, and one female fertilize a single egg, but happen to be genetically compatible so no rejection occurs. Similar in concept to a chimera.

God allowed you to be born a female and I feel that to go against what God created for your life is a sin. I think this money donated is wasted on a selfish attitudes. The money would be put to better use if donated to the homeless or vets who are struggling with problems because of the war they went through to give you a free country to live in. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't believe you will be any happier being a man than staying a woman. Happiness is a choice - not something you can have surgery to create.

JPC45 - Why?! This money would have gone to the soup kitchen or to the homeless shelter but this is a waste of money.

Really? What other mental health treatments do you think should be denied and the money spent instead on soup kitchens? Just people who have suicidal ideation, or mental health treatment in general?

Compared to many other mental health treatments, gender reassignment surgery is cheap and has a very high success rate.

Not exactly. You've confused gender dysphoria with being intersex. This person apparently has gender dysphoria, a male brain in a female body.

But you're right that intersex folks are often infertile.

If he didn't identify with being a man, then yes, Jim, the proper pronoun would be "she." But that isn't the case, so it's "he."

The young generation now accepts these gender changes now because most are raised with no morals, and frankly, don't give a damn. Wired wrong??? no, they are wired right, just confused at the world. And people are screaming "WHAT IS WRONG WiTH SOCIETY TODAY ???" Wow people, you don't have a clue, ever hear the phrase"can't see the forest because of the trees" ?

The liberal indoctrination program is in its 33rd year everyone that has been educated in that time frame is so confused everything seams normal. except the older generations that don't share the new normal, and don't drink the kool aid. for some reason the younger generation has as difficult a time trying to understand them as they do the younger generation, basically what it amounts to is the fruit has ripened and is now starting to rot another end to another cycle. and a new beginning with some new tenant'sits close to harvest time. I wonder what the new crop will be. its not like we did not know the plan. if the ship sails make sureyou are on it because it wont be returning for those that missed it.

              "The liberal indoctrination program"

"The young generation now accepts these gender changes now because most are raised with no morals"

So, what would be the moral action? To judge another? Condemn another?? Make laws against anyone who we feel even the least bit threatened by, or who is anything but white, Christian, male, and heterosexual?

After WWI, in the 20s and 30s, radio, roads, and later, electricity brought the world to the Fundamentalist Christians of Appalachia. Their reaction was a moral and social crusade against this 'new' immorality called the Old-Time movement, which was about returning to the traditional values and way of life of the 18th and 19th century. They found that the world was not what they had been taught it was or should be, and insisted the rest of the world conform to their standards - the standards and worldview of the illiterate, superstitious hillbilly.

Many of you on the internet, previously connected to the world through TV and films, now, late in your lives, find yourselves connected to a larger world through the internet. You can think that the values that you learned in your small town, suburb, or farm house are absolute, universal, and timeless, but they are clearly not. You seem to want the world to conform to you and your values, as if you have the power to judge or control others.

None of this is anything new, it's just that you seem to be unhappy because someone is 'accepted' rather than punished, and that someone is treated with basic human respect and compassion rather than the contempt and condemnation of traditional, illiterate tribalism.

And you think you know morality or decency? This story is about morality and decency. The immoral and indecent are those that are upset or angered by it. And that's surprising, because at this point in life, shouldn't you be seeking redemption, instead of doubling-down?

Daniel please elaborate on what is so good about being so self important no disrespect intended but this is a little off the bubble when it comes to goodness, now what happens next will this womanman marry a manwoman and be the man that bares children or will this person be considered Gay or Bisexual or what new normal, personally I just cant understand what is so good about being something that you are not. and its a fact that most these people or at least a great deal don't properly adjust, don't get me wrong this type of condition I have more sympathy's to then the Gay or Lesbian community, I don't respect the bisexual community any more then people that have sex with animals, this person truly believes she is in the wrong body and is attempting to fix it but maybe she is in the right body and is mentally confused and will not be able to adjust to any change, what if after all is done she decides she is a woman and wants to have a baby and play mommy for a while it has happened. and what would that make her mate knowing that he is a she and she marries a she then they are lesbians? and what if she carries a baby that she will have to have planted their her own egg or not will the hormones that she will have to continue tacking mess up the child that will be borne, remember the womanman that was the first man to give birth and then the second man to give birth when in fact she is a woman disguised surgically as a man married to a woman but instincts told her its time to have babies, the world just keeps getting weirder.

@D Buck (or was that DICK BUTT) As for who is confused and who is not -- I put my money on you. WTF does it matter to you what any person does with THEIR body -- it's none of your F-ing business. It doesn't have any meaning to me, my family, my friends or anybody for that matter. Since you are basically IGNORANT, you don't understand that sexual reassignment surgery is not something that you just go into a hospital and request. It requires a lot of work with a psychologist/psychiatrist who specializes in this area, not to mention many other medical professionals. You really should see a doctor (head doctor) and maybe they can fix your warped mind. Or maybe you can pray to your god to help you rid yourself of all the hate you carry --- somehow I get the idea that you were molested as a child. Go for help, it's out there

The money is specifically for HIS surgery. As for the leftovers (if there are any):

"The campaign's managers announced Wednesday morning that they plan to donate all the excess cash to the Jim Collins Foundation, a group that "raises money to fund gender-confirming surgeries for those transgender people who need surgery to live a healthy life," according to the organization's website."

He needs to be able to pay the hospital, the surgeon, the anesthesiologist, and all the ancillaries in cash, since providers can't count on insurance payments. He should fight the insurance company's denial, though, because no reputable psychologist or psychiatrist thinks the procedures are "cosmetic." That's just insurance-ese for "we don't want to pay for it," just like "experimental" is. They have a whole glossery of fancy terms to use when denying a claim, and it's almost always used for denying what they should be paying for. (I used to pay health insurance claims for a living.) The tide has turned now, and the frat could use that money to fight them in court - and almost assuredly win. Because breast reduction is only the first step in his physical transition. A surgeon will also have to fashion a penis, as well. (It's not that big a deal any more. They do it for soldiers who have them blown off by IEDs, too.) Male-to-female surgery requires only one, or at most two, separate procedures; female-to-male requires half a dozen separate procedures, and the price pretty much triples that of M-t-F. Fourteen thou won't even get him in the door. Better to use the money to sue the insurance company, to force them to cover it ALL.

The bottom line is that it is 100% impossible to make the mind change to fit the body, so the only alternative is to change the body to fit the mind. That, they can do.

you are aware that insurance is based on expense, if it is not life threatening then it doesn't belong their it only makes insurance more expensive and that is a bad thing for most people so if you want cosmetic surgery or something like a modification that is of your own desire then you pay for it because insurance is already to damn expensive and I don't want to have to lessen my health care so some girl can have a personel penis to play with or so some boy can grow tits. where in the hell do you young people come up with all this socialist crap what drugs were your parents taking at Woodstock that could damage not only their fried minds but those of future generations and even melt minds that they simply got within hearing range, what bunk. next you will want tattoos to be coverd under your health insurance.

Sixteen thou...? Why, it would almost be enough to give everyone in Darfur one bean. Foreign aid to the Third World runs from hundreds of millions to billions. $16k is one drop in the Pacific, unless you can figure out how to confine it to a single village. On the other hand, how much world hunger could be assuaged with the money rednecks give to the NRA and KKK...?

Get the surgery, but if it is not all that you want or hoped it would be, you best just not speak it. There are some serious health issues that can happen, be ready for them. If she is a she and "wants" to be a he, then it is an IT - sad but true, when a woman does not know the sex of her baby, she calls it the baby or IT, this person is born one way and wants to be another, so IT would be the proper word in this case.

Lord, but you're ignorant! "She" doesn't WANT to be a "he." HE has a body that doesn't match his mind. People commit suicide over this. The only time "it" would be appropriate would be if there was no gender AT ALL. Mothers with hermaphrodite babies choose one pronoun or the other, but never, ever "it." (Nowadays, the doctors recommend the parents raise the child androgynously, and allow him or her to CHOOSE a gender at puberty, so the appropriate hormones can be administered.) I suppose even a molecule of empathy from you is out of the question...

Somehow, I doubt it. But somehow it's a bad thing when other people object to it. When you've walked a mile in their shoes, then you can be snippy.

not everyone gets the surgery down below. Genital surgery is not that advanced and people end up losing A LOT of sensitivity. Quite a few trans PEOPLE (not "it") chose to only do the top by either adding or subtracting breasts.

I think this is awesome! I always thought the only thing fraternities had to offer were date rapes and AIDS jokes (line from Heathers) but I am really happy to see I was wrong.

Genital surgery was more advanced than you describe thirty years ago, when my friend Susie had it. Anyone who is still in college and may have to share a communal shower in gym class wants the genital surgery, above and beyond simple self-image concerns.

But I do agree that this story changes my image of frat boys. I'm sure most of them are still as bad as ever, especially at the big state universities. But Emerson is not the kind of school that attracts the "Steve Dallas" sort of frat rat.

If people are going to be chasing people of the same sex, make it mandatory that one of them must undergo a sex change. This, I would support with my taxes! We are not going to "ban" any relationships where two consenting adults of the same/opposite sex want to be together. What we should do, is offer relocation funds to Iran or North Korea for bigoted individuals who feel they have the right to prevent people from having basic human/civil rights.

I would be HAPPY to support this with my Taxes. When do you leave?

At least MWG's post is a little funny this time - usually they're just ignorant and nonsensical.

What would Jesus think of your use of the words "donger" and "trap hole"? Usually you're on here telling folks they need to go to (your) church.

Why do we ban relationships between three or more consenting adults i mean seriously what is the difference between two or three or four lets get rid of ALL the stone age laws.

As far as I am concerned, if people want to have three or more consenting adults in the same relationship, that's fine with me. What other people do in their personal lives has nearly zero impact upon me.

However, good luck on getting the US Government to recognize those kinds of marriages. Its already taken thousands of years for us to get where gays/lesbians can be legally married, and even then, its not 100%.

MWG, you are an FN idiot!

Ban all relationships where there are more than one donger or trap hole!

You may want to look up the definition of relationships. FOR example, a Parent-child relationship, your parent of the same sex should demand you have a sex change and place the word, "faux MWG" on your head!

The government doesn't care how many people are in a relationship, only how many of them are married. The reasons for the historical banning of polygamy is that they were often not consensual or equal relationships. Women were coerced into these marriages or simply given to the man by her family. There was not mutual consent and protecting women from being forced into a marriage is within the purview of the government to prevent.

No he doesn't. This is highly elective surgery and not medically required. He can live his life as a man even lacking the plumbing. I worked for a company that covered gender reassignments, hormone therapy and virtually anything desired along gender issues at an astronomiccal cost. They of course passed that cost to the workers. What they would not cover was cosmetic surgery, hair transplant and similar other "make me feel good about myself" procedures. Gender reassignment is absurdly expensive and although crude surgeons will tell you it is easier to dig a hole than build a pole, male to female is expensive but female to male costs a fortune.

Shrekk, for the right amount of money shrinks will say anything. Check out all the shrinks who testify in insanity pleas during murder trials.

I agree. This is elective surgery and should not be covered by public or insurance funds. It's not medically required.

He would have had to find several shrinks to buy off then since most gender reassignment surgeons won't do the work unless 3 outside psychiatrist plus the hospital board agree that the surgery is necessary. This isn't something anyone does on a whim, including the patient and all the doctors involved.

And since most transgendered folks are rather poor I'm not sure where you imagine they come up with all that money, much less enough to convince an already wealthy psychiatric specialist to risk losing his license and career.

Shrekk,. I don't see why the fact that they are transgendered has anything to do with whether they have money or not.

It's elective surgery. Not medically required.

How they come up with the money for it is not my problem.

I would like to have my breasts reduced,,but since they are not big enough to be a health issue my insurance would not cover it. So I have to either live with what I have, or spend my own money on it.

                                  It's My problem. My decision.

Multiple psychiatrists and the hospital board disagree with your assessment. This surgery is never performed unless it's required for a person's mental health. It's not elective surgery in the sense that most cosmetic surgeries are elective surgeries.

                                  No, that wasn't it...

"Boston fraternity raises more than $16,000 for local single mothers"

Nope. Gosh let me adjust my glasses - I'm just not seeing it right...

"Boston fraternity raises more than $16,000 for children's cancer center"

Oh wait now I see it - it's for a "brother's sex change surgery"

Aw, ain't that so nice? I have so much hope for the world now. So nice to know they have their priorities in order. I have so, SO much hope for the world. So much hope. I was about to shed a tear because of the terrible things plaguing our world until I read this. But now that tear is for the rainbows and sunshine brought to our planet by these wonderful, wonderful people. I hope they run for office and help run our country one day. And if anyone complains, well you're just one of those right wing, Republican, Conservative, Christian, hater poo poo heads. The amount of good and positive and helpful.....oh I just want to wee wee it makes me so happy.

We live in a world where people thinking outside of themselves is pretty rare. Why can't we just cherrish it when we read stories about people helping others, regardless of the cause?

So, if somebody gets his/her appendix removed, the operation is an "appendectomy". If a woman gets converted to a man, is the operation an "appendadicktome"?

That is very cool, that a fraternity would be this progressive to do a fundraiser for one of their brothers. When he is ready to do the bottom half there is a great doctor in Bay Harbor Islands Florida named Dr. Harold Reed. He has people come from all over the world to have reassignment surgery. Standing ovation to the fraternity, and to the patient for the bravery.
