Marco Millian, 34, was widely noted as one of the first openly gay candidates for public office in Mississippi.
The body of a candidate for mayor of Clarksdale, Miss., was found about 15 miles west of town Wednesday, and a person was in custody, sheriff's officials said.
Authorities had been searching for Marco McMillian, 34, since Tuesday morning, when his sport-utility vehicle was involved in a head-on collision in Coahoma County, the county sheriff's office said in a statement.
But McMillian wasn't in the vehicle, authorities said. The driver of his vehicle, identified as Lawrence Reed, 22, of Clarksdale, was airlifted to a hospital in Memphis, Tenn., about 60 miles away, NBC station WMC of Memphis reported.
There was no immediate report on the cause of death, according tothe Coahoma County coroner's office.
The sheriff's department declined to say whether Reed was the "person of interest" who was taken into custody or whether the action was taken in connection with McMillian's death or as a separate part of the accident investigation. The department said no further information would be immediately provided "due to the fact this is an ongoing investigation."

McMillian — who was chief executive of MWM & Associates, a consultant to nonprofit organizations — was widely noted as one of the first openly gay candidates for public office in Mississippi.
His campaign spokesman, Jarod Keith, told the Clarion-Ledger newspaper of Jackson, Miss., that McMillian's sexuality was never an issue in the campaign.
The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, a national advocate for gay political candidates, tweeted Wednesday:
"Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Marco McMillian, one of the 1st viable openly #LGBT candidates in Mississippi."
In a statement Wednesday, McMillian's campaign said: "Words cannot describe our grief at the loss of our dear friend, Marco McMillian. The shocking news of Marco's death is beyond difficult for us to process."
Two of McMillian's opponents — who, like McMillian, are Democrats — said they, too, were shocked and saddened by the development.
"He was a very articulate, clean-cut young man," Bill Luckett, a former candidate for governor, told the Clarion-Ledger. "It's a bizarre and tragic situation."
Another candidate in the race, state Rep. Chuck Espy, whose father is the current mayor, told the newspaper that he had known McMillian for many years and considered a dynamic and energetic candidate with numerous ideas about how to change Clarksdale.
Clarksdale, population 20,000, is the county seat.
Espy offered his thoughts and prayers to McMillian's family.

Woodward writes the White House has been deliberately disingenuous about its role in the sequester, and accused Obama of “moving the goal posts” by insisting Republicans agree to new tax revenue as part of any substitute for the sequester. “That was not the deal he made,” he says.

I don't know that the comment meant that he had his own personal driver, but that this person was the one driving HIS vehicle at the time. This person could have been responsible for his death and was just using his car to get away, but that's just speculation. The article doesn't provide enough info to really know how the driver was related, if at all, to Mr. McMillan.

If you are referring to the statue of Rosa Park, it was President Bush that asked for the statue to be created after her death. Get your facts straight before you stick your foot in your mouth. Obama had nothing to do with the creation of the statue.

I'm not 100% certain what you got from this article, but from what I read, someone died. A person. A human being, just like you and I, whether you'd like to believe it or not. He had a family. Friends. Dreams and goals. I don't care what religion, political party, or moral standards you identify with, but your comments are more than wrong and disrespectful. Moshuluu, thank you for your service to our country. Let me tell you a bit about myself. I am the wife of an active service Marine, who is black and who does not like the community organizer any more than I do. My son, who is Army does believe in him. Ohh well.
I have voted in every election since Jimmy Carter. I learned my lesson that one to never again vote for someone I can't believe in.
To me Obama is a typical politician, who will tell you anything he thinks you want to hear, then do what he wanted to anyway. I don't like him. Never have. I have no objections to having a black man or woman as President. Actually I wanted Mitt Romney to choose Condi Rice as his running mate. I've always admired her and thought she would fit the bill and perhaps run herself when the time came.
I just cannot follow Obama. I don't like his politics. Never have. It has nothing to do with race. I simply am against National health. I believe that ALL Illegals should be deported. I believe that Welfare recipients should be required to work for a portion of what they receive. Perhaps working the jobs the illegals had been doing. How truly tragic that a motivated young man, so keen to use his life for making a difference to others, has been struck down. Murdered at a time when so many people in this world are content to just sit back complaining. Not many folks willing to go place a phone call to share an idea, let alone write a letter to their leaders. Just think of what he might have accomplished. Some folks don't understand, it isn't your sexual orientaiton which defines who you are. But your character and that is from how you chose to respond to what life throws at you. Everyone has suffering, good and bad times. It is how you rise above that sets you apart from the crowd, and your strengths.

What on earth does child molestation have to do with homosexuality? Hmm? The acceptance of homosexuality is recognizing that it is a relationship/connection between two consenting adults that is private and not your business or mine. It's very ignorant to assume that, just because it violates your principles, it will lead to the sexual exploitation of children. Child molesters come in all shapes, sizes and sexual orientations.
Secondly, you ask Cathy V. how she would feel if this or that happened to her family. How about this: How would you feel if a family member that you cared deeply about passed away and all people had to offer was nasty and derogatory comments, instead of the respect you and your family deserve to grieve?

"Shocked and Saddened" is a weak, empty, expression of grief - but then again, it is an expression made pupular by our present king - who is week and empty of any meaningful expression except the display of his own arrogance. I do not support the gay/lesbian lifestye or political agenda. but murder is the ultimate expression of hate, and is not to be tolerated. I hope they find the person(s) responsible for this and prosecute them to the max even it it means the death penalty. That is not hate nor revenge, that is justice.
