Eighteen cats and two birds were killed during a Connecticut house fire, but firefighters were able to save eight other pets.
The blaze broke out just after 1:30 a.m. in the town of Berlin, and the female homeowner, Katherine O'Leary, was able to escape without being injured.
Matt Odishoo, the deputy fire marshal of Berlin, said the fire department brought most of the surviving animals out and revived them, before turning them over to animal control.
The surviving animals include seven cats and one sheep dog named Quigley. They are in the custody of Berlin Animal Control.
"They look healthy. They're traumatized, obviously, but they look healthy. They're good weights," Jan Lund, the animal control officer for Berlin, said.

One cat is missing.
O'Leary is expected to check on her animals on Thursday.
Animal control plans to go over the pet records and make sure the pets are neutered in good health before returning them to O'Leary.
No local ordinance in Berlin limits the number of pets a resident can have, Lund said, and neighbors have not issued any complaints with animal control.
Officials believe that the fire appears to have started in mudroom. It caused extensive fire and water damage, fire officials said.
The cause is under investigation.

Richard... Every living being has a purpose and soul - and not just the furry or upright. There is much to be said for the respect of all of Mother Natures' creations. I'm sure you can guess from my screen name that I love cats, no doubt about that. But I wouldn't fry a million cats (or any animal) for one human. Any worthy human wouldn't want me to.

It might not be a peak news story for some people, but for the animal rescue group that I work with, this is very tragic news. Many people consider their pets to be like family members and would feel tremendous sorrow at the loss of just one. I can't imagine what this poor woman is going thru.
I don't see how this can be described in any way as a "good thing".

I feel bad for the animals, but wow this lady is a hoarder. How the hec does she feed that many animals? 25 cats? Her entire day must have been spent feeding and cleaning litter boxes.. hopefully.

From someone who lives in Tornado Alley with two dogs: you shouldn't have more animals than you yourself can tend to in an emergency. Common sense and responsible pet ownership.
And as someone who lives on earth, I know common sense isnt common.

Since cats kill 3.7 billion birds a year in this country, I'd say the birds won this one.
we are being told that cats kill that many birds but i know there is no story on what oil based pesticides really kill, so stop the bs

HA , i was JUST thinking about that today, such a tiny state, yet ALOT of weird, horrible scary, tragic news coming from CT these past few months, very weird.
All jokes aside, i feel sorry for the animals, they cant open doors or windows without thumbs, and were stuck in a hot inferno, very scary and awful way to die, most birds have an IQ similar to a 3 year old child, that must've been horrible for the birds stuck in a cage, and not having any way to escape.
on another note, i have 2 house cats (2 too many, but i love them) anyways, my litterbox gets cleaned twice a day, can you IMAGINE the smell of having 20+ cats in one house, that's just gross.
I can't imagine cleaning the cat box twice a day.
