Light winds and cool temperatures allowed firefighters to make progress on a wildfire that caused power outages and prompted evacuations Thursday near Riverside.
By 5 p.m. Friday, the Jurupa Wildfire was about 60 percent contained and had scorched about 311 acres, a figure that held steady since the morning.
Twenty engines, one bulldozer, a helicopter and eight fire crews were assigned to the fire at 6 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., 311 acres had burned and the fire was 40 percent contained. At 4 a.m., the blaze had consumed 200 acres and was 30 percent contained.
Power was restored early Friday to Riverside residents, some of whom watched as flames neared their homes. Wind gusts tossed embers over a wide area Friday evening, sparking small brush fires.

"It was way too close," said homeowner Matt Kolstad.
About 1,800 homes were without power at one point.
The vegetation fire was reported about 4:43 p.m. near Rio Road and Calle Hermosa in Jurupa Valley, at the south end of Santa Ana River Regional Park (map). The fire grew from 10 acres to 50 acres by 5:45 p.m., according to the Riverside County Fire Department's online incident report. The fire scorched between 50 and 75 acres by 6:50 p.m.; and grew to consume 150 acres by 8:45 p.m.
Firefighters told NBC4 they expected crews to remain in the area through Friday evening as crews attempt to form a fire line. Warm and windy conditions are forecast for the region.
Firefighters used deliberately set blazes, known as backfires, to help control the fire. The tactic is meant to burn possible fuel in the fire's path.
At least one structure, a shed, was damaged.

It's Bush's fault
Brute-It has to be Bush's fault, or it could be because there is no poop, I mean pope.
Seems California is always on fire. They must have some very experienced fire fighters over there.
That's what I call "Fighting fire with fire"...
Reagan would have put it out with one long piss.
BAM ..just like that... politics.... you people simply are not paying attention. its a diversion damnit. be diverted....
( GM CD)
Officer/Lt. Dorner is back to seek additional revenge....San Burnadino.......
DRAGIT to San Diego and SINKIT!
LAPD and San Burnadino trying to snuff out Officer/Lt. Dorner, they had a tip he was back in the area....
Burning bush?
Congratulations, takenaka! You learned to say something other than "Ban handguns." Maybe you DO have more than one brain cell after all? Tell me, sir, where do you live in real life? Also, it is not the fault of Bush or any other stupid politician but, rather, it is due to ALL of them AND to people like you that honestly deserve to burn in a fire for allowing people to become helpless and defenseless and end up under the power of a ruthless, religious that is posing as an anti-religious, Fascist, global dictatorship. Thanks a lot. Oh and Steve, you can stick it where the sun does not shine, okay? I have a sister who lives in the San Diego area and if you are going to say that a city deserves to burn, then I would wish for your city or whereever that you live to become abandoned and to let the flames of this hell on earth to consume your evil soul and to make it so consumed as to make it like you were never born at all.
Oh brother
Check with your doctor , your meds need re evaluated.
Still got your left blinker on i see.
Thetruthteller.. is your sister hot by any chance?
maybe it is the illegals pot farms burned by ice
Bush didn't cut all the bushes while on vacation, so what do you expect?
Fire. It's elemental.
and when combined with earth and wind, makes for a decent band.
the soloution
there is a combination of peanut butter mayonaise and aloe vera gel that works as an incredible flame retardent. simply coat your house with the gel like substance and the flames will likley not do as much damage. the tv show showed an example on the house treated with it the fire didn't burn as long.
...or you could just learn to find the numbers of some reputable people that will be willing to retrofit your house to make it completely fireproof, jpvp. However, thank you for that bit of interesting data, though. I learned something new today.
That plan not only smells funny but bet its got allot of bugs in it.
Or...
You COULD put proper fire clearance around your property and solve most of the problem yourself. Also have good fire insurance as well as an adequate water supply to defend your property.
These wildfires are mostly natural and necessary for the environment. Stop putting them out and charging extra taxes on the property owners.
all things considered i prefer our snow season.
San Burnadino likes fire.......look what they did to Officer/Lt Dorner........He's Back.....
So is it 150 acres as posted in the lead headline or 200 acres as stated in the article? Guess it depends on when you look at the blaze. Recently, over 1,000,000 acres burned in Texas. Pardon me if I don't get to excited over 200 acres of CA making a marshmallow cooking fire.
Quick , grab my medical MJ and let's get out of here...What about the cat?...Screw the cat, I needs my medicine...J/K
I find it curious that a very small +/-200 acre wildfire near a California city makes national news when last July's Oil Creek Fire, which consumed 66,000 acres of valuable rangeland, thousands of dollars of ranchers' fencing, and prompted an evacuation notice for parts of the town of Newcastle, Wyoming, did not. For a homeowner, of course, the relative size of the fire is immaterial when it is threatening to destroy one's home and possessions. I'm merely commenting on the way in which the media direct their attention and reporting.
Wait til summer...
Any volunteer firefighters?
Is our budget OK?
nothing like developing a subdivision in a area prone to drought, fire, flooding into mud landslides on bluffs. fvck em let it burn. you wont see me building a home on a flood plane then expecting everyone to bail my arss out. stupid idiots...........
This is a little early for wildfires. Normally it wouldn't be this dry at this time of year due to spring rains. I guess this means we are going to have a very short spring and a long, hot summer. Here's hoping the sequester doesn't cut into funding for the fire department and emergency resources as deeply as the repugs wanted for the cuts they proposed in order to avoid a sequester would have.
Don't build in the hills in an area with historically low rainfall...
