The man known as the East Coast Rapist has been sentenced to three terms of life in prison plus 80 years.
Aaron Thomas, of New Haven, Conn., pleaded guilty in November to two counts of rape and three counts of abduction for a Halloween 2009 attack on three teenage trick-or-treaters in Prince William County, Virginia.
Thomas forced the trick-or-treaters -- two of whom are now in college -- into the woods and raped two of them over the course of about an hour.
He had a cigarette lighter that was a replica of a gun, Prince William County Commonwealth's Attorney Paul Ebert told News4 in Washington D.C.
One of the victims was able to text her mother, who called police. Thomas fled when he heard sirens, Ebert said.
At sentencing Friday, Thomas gave a statement referring himself as "totally blameworthy." He said he knew what he did to the women, News4's Erika Gonzalez reported.
Two victims forgive him
Two of his victims testified that they forgave Thomas and prayed he would be cured of his sickness, Gonzalez reported.
But the mother of another victim said her daughter hasn't been the same since the attack.
Thomas also pleaded guilty in November to rape and abduction charges in Loudoun County for a rape in 2001 at a Leesburg apartment complex. He faces multiple life sentences that case as well.

Thomas's behavior and mental status was an issue in court, if not an issue raised formally in the trial.
Ebert called Thomas's behavior "erratic from the start." In custody, Thomas has repeatedly cut his wrists and smeared his blood on the walls of his cell. He has claimed he had an alternate personality -- Erwin.
However, the prosecution's mental health expert had found Thomas was either "feigning or greatly exaggerating" symptoms. His attorneys had notified the court that sanity would not be raised as an issue.
Thomas has been tied to 17 attacks over longer than a decade from the D.C. area to Connecticut, including attacks in Fairfax and Prince George's counties.
The tip that led to his arrest came from Prince George's County.
In a story published in The Washington Post, Thomas acknowledged that he was the East Coast Rapist, saying, "I don't think I'm crazy but something is wrong with me."

Rapists are often put into protective custody and not in with the general population. They will get their asses whipped to no tomorrow. Sadly, it is what he deserves.

Look at what is going on around us in this country these days. It's truly beyond comprehension...yet here we are sentencing these things to extended prison time,ongoing appeals,access to education, the internet,physical and mental therapy, group hugs and kisses... the likes of which many,many law abiding citizens in this supposed progessive country will never have access to and they call this a justice system! It is a joke!
And of course he will be deliverd mail from a bunch of crazed women and likely some men who want to bear his children and it won't be long at all before some money grubbing producer or agent will be eliciting a ghost writer for this piece of sheet! I'm not ashamed of myself. I stated it could be a quicker far less costlier alternative given the nature of the crime. It is known criminals on death row get numerous amounts of appeals, write books, petition there innocence to special interest groups try to get there sentenced overturned, beg for a stay of execution etc, etc. They are making a mockery of the criminal justice system the system is not perfect but it is flawed. Why don't you grow up some people can't be rehabilitated and deserve the death penalty.

Jaypea-1022947 Folks forget that it will cost the taxpayers of Virginia about $125 per day to incarcerate this creep. If he does about 40 years, that would total about $1,825,000 IF he lives that long.
Baylor, I have a better suggestion. How about after a rapist is convicted he's left alone in a room with the fathers/husbands/brothers/cousins etc of his victims for an hour?

There's always a bunny-hugger in the group. Every time there is an execution (that's been years in the making) at the Huntsville, TX prison, there are always these type of people outside the gates begging and praying for mercy for these convicted criminals. I'm not sure if they are trying to pave their way to Heaven with "compassion" or if they are truly just plain stupid. When are they going to learn that there are some people who DO NOT have a right to live. This is why laws are in place. Praying for these disgusting excuses for humans is senseless and ignorant in my opinion.

2life sentences plus 80 years for this young adult person is to much. Person should have received mental health treatment and 10 years. This country is to big on throwing people in iron cages in isolations. Have anyone every thought about the treatment of prisoners and the impact that has on society when they get out? Rape is a henious crime, but we need to know all the circumstances before makiing judgements; after all, if he were your relative you would not be so hateful. I'd like to know his history before these incidents, was substance addiction involved, did he use weapons and was he extremly violent during these attacks; did he have any history of mental illness or crimes. You just don't give a person two life sentences and 80 years. That is unusual and cruel.

Seriously? First if you read the article it said that insanity was not a possible plea because he was found to be sane. More importantly I take issue with you wondering if he was extremely violent during these attacks. Is there a form of rape that is not extremely violent? You've got to be kidding me. Let's have someone hold you down, threaten you, and stick something in you that you don't want anywhere near you and then we'll see if you thought it was violent or not. Your saying that you would be fine with someone raping your mother, sister, daughter, wife, you, etc. and being able to walk free after some time in jail? A rapist takes something from his victims that can never be returned or made up for. If you are a female I am shocked at your comment. As for PEACE JOURNEY - I agree with you to a certain extent. It may be cruel to let him sit in prison for the rest of his life (if he lived a long time) so, for his sake and more importantly the sake of his victims and society, he should be executed. Then he doesn't suffer, NO ONE has to worry about him escaping, accidentally being released or released early by some bleeding heart.
If all the bleeding hearts want to let these criminals rot in prison, getting FREE FOOD AND MEDICAL, you should pay their bill and leave of those of us that DO NOT want to pay alone.

Righty-o Frans-3909286! Most people assume that it's cheaper to house them on death row and more economical to execute them, but that's not true. And why should they get to leave this world in a more humane way than their victims? They should have to think about their crimes every day for the rest of their lives, locked away from society. And let's not forget that there are some innocent people incarcerated and on Death Row. It is better to let 3,000 guilty people go than to execute one innocent person.
I'm sorry, Kimkan2, but how is it not more economical just to execute? Years of housing, food, legal counsel, and medical care as opposed to one "shocking" event and a cremation/burial...sounds much cheaper to just execute him. If you're going to say it's cheaper then please back it up with some facts, I'd actually like to see the data.
As for him being innocent, he's not. He admitted his guilt. I don't know how those girls could forgive him, I never would. There's no fixing someone as broken as him.
It is true. Look at Texas as a good example of how many innocent people are executed. In the end, it is their death sentence that will cost the state more when they have to pay out to the family for a wrongful execution. It is always cheaper to keep someone in jail for a life sentence than a death sentence. All it takes is just one wrongful execution of an innocent person to cost the states millions of dollars.
How would you like it if you were convicted of a crime that you did not commit? How would you like it if that penalty was the death sentence that got carried through? You would want your family to carry through with a hefty lawsuit, right?
Kim has bought into the Liberal Dribble big time...I spent 25 years working in a County Detention Facility and it doesn't cost any more or any less than any other inmate to keep them on death row...The money comes into play paying the Liberal pony-tailed Attorneys millions of dollars over the years defending the case...Any Lawyer considers it like "Winning the Lottery" to get a Death Sentence case.. And as we have seen over and over and over again it takes years to rid the gene pool of the scum...and that is what costs we the taxpayers the money.. Lawyers.
P.S. if the inmate does not have an outside source of money to buy things via the Commissary within the Jail, we have Inmate Welfare which gives him the money...
While it's true in the past that innocent people have been executed, that's less likely to happen these days. With DNA and improvements in Forensic science it could be made a thing of the past.
Not ALL should be executed of course. In some, especially circumstantial cases there's always a suggestion of innocence. But in cases like this, where he has confessed, and there is Scientifc PROOF, then Yes, definitely.
You are right, Kimcan, although I think the most important point you make is that it is better to not execute anyone than to execute one innocent person. This outweighs the financial aspect for me. If people knew how many innocent persons have been executed I think it would change their opinions about putting convicted killers to death. Not saying some people don't deserve to die for their crimes, especially those against children, but I think spending every single day of the rest of your life behind bars can be worse than death to many of these offenders. To those who say it doesn't matter because the person confesses, there are thousands of false confessions and coerced confessions every year, especially from the developmentally disabled and young people.

Becky, that's a nice fairly tale you're living in. Right prevails in our justice system, prosecutors never withhold exculpatory evidence, defense attorneys are never incompetent, the poor get the same quality of representation as the rich, juries always reach fair and measured decisions, only the guilty are ever convicted and their sentences are always just and fair. People in jail are there because they deserve it and the few innocent people accused of crimes are acquitted and go free. If all that is actually true where you live, then you've found a paradise filled with perfect people, and you should count yourself lucky.
@Eddie S, Sterotype much? Being pro or anti death penalty doesn't necessarily coincide with a political party. I am liberal, and I am very much pro-death penalty for murder and rape. All the liberals I know are also. I know it's easy just to label someone and say all liberals or all blacks are a certain way, but that's just not the case.

And here's a little food for thought, the VICTIM ALSO pays to take care of the criminal! Yes, when the victim finally gets her life back in order and goes back to work, their tax dollar too will help support the very person that brutalized them. The victim will be paying to feed, cloth and when he gets sick or is close to death or gets cancer, the victim's tax dollars will pay to try to save the very person that was SENTENCED TO DIE in prison. (Which makes NO sense! If they sentenced to DIE in prison, then they should get NO medical attention and SPEED UP the process and die.)

I have done my research. And here I am, a middle class, albeit lower middle class, but well-read and mild-mannered individual who was never accused of a crime, but who was accused of the murder of a good friend in a small town. I could scarcely believe it myself. And, had they not found the actual killers, it is hard to say how I would have afforded a lawyer to defend myself. So, I do know first hand the statistics. Why not execute him 3 times and let his body rot for another 80 years? Yeah I know you can only kill him once, but why not give it a shot. People like this only exist because we let them. What it means, if some sissy parole board frees him from his life sentence, he still has 80 years to serve, so can't be freed.
The legal wording around what constitutes a 'life' sentence is very specific. It has been argued in court-how long is a 'life' sentence, since we all die at different ages.
These ultra-long sentences that seem to make little sense, are used to make SURE these people don't get parole, or let loose for overcrowding, etc., and NEVER see the outside of the prison fence.
The parole board can overturn sentences in America?? Life without parole is life without parole, period in most countries. The only thing the parole board can do is consider paroles when and if a scheduled parole hearing comes up, no?

Some have to hold a hearing on a given schedule. Why do you think Charles Manson has had so many parole hearings?
I'm asking if the parole board has the power to overturn sentences, MPA, not stating unequivocably that they don't. Notice the question marks? Was Manson given life without parole as his sentence and then the parole board overturned that somehow and gave him parole hearings anyway? Zheng has claimed that the parole board can commute his life sentences. Is this true?
When you are charged with crimes, you are sentence SEPARATELY for each charge. This is why you get life plus whatever, because they don't run concurrently, they run consecutively. What is so hard to understand about that?
life means 25 to 45 years. and most times people do any where from 2 days to 40 days for every day. so you get this.

They need to make sure this creep never gets out. A long sentence isn't always a guarantee. In 10-15-20 years, if he's quiet, and doesn't cause any problems, some idiot might let him out. Especially if there's overcrowding. If the choice is a murderer or this guy, they will let this guy out. That's why these creeps sometimes end up back on the street.

People can joke or even seriously say he'll never get out but someone like him has nothing to loose and a lot of time to look for and plan ways to escape. And all the lines of what you were saying, if memory serves me correctly, there was a guy in Texas or one of the southern states that was given life and after an extended period of time (and him laying low) he was released and yep you guessed it, he went right back to killing! I think he killed like 2-3 more people (possibly more) before he was captured (again) and given the death penalty.

Unfortunately, there is no record anywhere of any rapist ever being 'cured of their sickness' by any means at all. None! Not even castration can stop violent sex offenders from continuing their predatory nature. Instead of putting this scum in prison -- with all the other violent sexual predators -- he should be euthanized, and all the other violent sex predators along with him. These people are never 'cured' of wanting to rape people.

If someone is convicted of a crime & admits to committing the crime & is sentenced to death for that crime, they should be allowed one appeal only. After the one appeal if nothing is overturned, execution within 30 days.

I'm not saying what he did wasn't wrong but the 'liberals' want rape to have a harsher sentence than actual murder, so I don't see why the liberals would want him cut loose. And the 'republicans' seem to like killing anyone convicted of any crime they can, Texas comes to mind. And any group out there that fights for falsely convicted people wouldn't touch this because he confessed to the crimes. So I don't really think anybody is going to trying to get him out of his sentence.
Next time Americans make sanctimonious comments about one rape incident on a bus in another country, that brought the whole country out to protest and demand change in policies and enforcement, Americans should remember their rape statistics...much of which never gets reported, documented or headline news.

On your statistics, I agree that most pedophiles are white, however most rapists are not. I'm certainly not making a race issue of it. A rapist is a rapist, a pedophile is a pedophile, and all should be hung no matter what race they are.
I agree... rapists, pedophiles, no matter the color, should be executed and not 20-30 years after the fact. I think a week is sufficient time to wrap up their miserable lives, then off to face the music. Period.
