A door-to-door salesman selling home fire alarms noticed smoke coming from a Texas home, heard a woman screaming and broke a window to rescue her.
Kaeriel Evans, 18, who has Down syndrome, was inside by herself when the blaze started in the 1600 block of Homestead Place, Garland, near Dallas, at about 6 p.m.
"I heard this lady yelling, 'Help, help,'" said Corey Anderson, of Rowlett. "I looked down and saw the smoke so I took off running, and -- reaction -- I just started kicking in the windows."
He tried to find her but couldn't at first.
"As far as I went in, I couldn't see nothing," Anderson said. "It was just smoke."
Then, he heard her voice again.
"I heard somebody say, 'Help me, help me,' so I pushed over an entertainment center and kind of went in there and saw the girl and I told her, 'Drop down and come to me.' And she did. And I got her out."
'He's a hero'
Anderson sells home security systems that include fire alarms, he said. He hadn't yet made it to her house when he saw the smoke and flames.
Evans was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital with smoke inhalation and minor burns but was expected to recover.
Soon, Evans' brother arrived home. "When I saw the house burned up, that's the first thing I asked about -- where is my sister?" Kavaucey Lewis said.
Lewis, 20, said he lives in the house with five siblings and their mother.
He quickly learned about her rescue and thanked Anderson.
"I just told him how much I appreciate it because my sister is my heart," he said.
Anderson was humble about what he had done.
"I'm glad I was here and could help," he said. "I really do wish if that was my family, somebody would do the same thing."
Evans said he couldn't thank Anderson enough.
"He went in there and, you know, he's a hero," Evans said. "He went above and beyond."
Anderson said the word "hero" doesn't fit.
"I don't feel like a hero," he said. "I just feel like, I mean, it was reaction. At the time, I just went with my instincts."
Firefighters are investigating how the fire started.

Let's see how some Right-Wing CLOWNS will spin this story.
I don't see how this is political one way or the other. This is a situation where someone was in need of help and someone was there to help, simple as that. Here's hoping good karma is bestowed on him for his effort.
Nothing Political about this.
The only clown I see is tryreality-1568930.
Now this is a good story. We're all hero's. It's just when, where, how and why when we are.
Kudos to Mr Anderson. The real American came out in him when he seen the smoke. If he didn't in time, I'm not sure if the girl with Downs Syndrome would've known to get out or not.
As gallahad mentions, "Karma". He's got one in the bank.....
tryreality: you people amaze me...to say that consertives will use this as a political platform is so out of it...we will rejoice for the safety of that young lady and applaud this young man's action. besides, it seems to be the demo MO to exploit tragedy!
Looks like your the first clown tryreality - right-winged or not.
@Try,
My thoughts and prayers go out to you on the recent loss of your sanity. Good luck, and for the time being, for heavens sake, don't operate any heavy machinery.
Kevin, you're so right: and here in TEXAS, a WHITE MAN rescued a BLACK DOWN'S teen. upending the usual crap the left-wing writes about.
tryreality- you need to try some reality and stop trying to introduce inflammatory remarks into non-related subject matter. Troll!
The way I heard it, he was able to enter the house by shooting his way through the re-enforced security door with his AR-15 assault rifle. It took 29 rounds from his 30 round clip to get in! Thank God he was able to buy that gun before the liberals banned it!
So next time you try to close the door on them damn Jehovah witnesses, better think twice folks...you could close the door and choke on that corndog, then whose gonna rescue ya?
tryreality gets the a**hole of the day award.
As for the young man who is the subject of the story, Well Done Sir.
tryreality:
I'm sure Mr. Anderson didn't ask the young lady her political affiliation before risking his life to save her. Kudos to you young Mr. Anderson!
Shame on you tryreality!
Hey try... you really ought to wait until AFTER someone brings politics into it before you comment. Otherwise, that makes YOU the trolling clown...
Try __— I don't know how (or if) the right wingers will spin it, but I now know how at least one left wing nut spins it. S'cuse while I ROTFLMFAOFF.
tryreality-1568930 can kiss my azz, he / she / it is one of those kind of azzholes that I would let his place burn, hell I would even go ass as far and toss him in just to feed the fire..
Glad this guy happened by as it could have been a way different turnout..
@dan42..Did you write that one all by yourself?...Spelling and all?...
I'm a Democrat and that comment was not cool at all, I doubt anyone on either side of the aisle would fire off a negative for this guys action, Dude needs to take his med's, Oh and he is a hero in my book. Guess We have Idiots on both sides trying to impress themselves by proving just how much of an Idiot they can be.
a here is no braver than a ordinary man, he is just braver five minutes longer .......Ralph Waldo Emerson
i think Mr Anderson qualifies as a hero .he certainly gets my vote well done my friend!
@try reality. you do not get any votes, you do not pass go, you do not collect 200.00. you prove once again that ignorance is alive and well in your neck of the woods.......sigh.......
TRYREALITY...
That girl is very glad she did not have to depend on your sorry butt
I wonder if try is feeling a bit like the only fire hydrant at the Westminster Dog Show?
Kudos to the young man who risked his life to save another. Would it be that we all would show each other the same selflessness if faced with the same situation.
I wonder if tryreality is really feistyredhead.
I suspect Tryreality is really a conservative, or a paid troll, as that is hardly the kind of comment a liberal would make. Maybe "try" goes to perceived leftie sights and makes the above comment, then goes to perceived rightie sights and substitutes "left" for "right".
He sure got the desired reaction here. Now, I'm going to comment on the substance of the story in another post.
tryreality should take his own advice and... "Try reality" for once. Seriously man, put the mouse down and repeat after me...
"The Sky is blue and the grass is green."
Ahem... Idiocy aside. It's good to see people willing to help others without thought to themselves.
pisssedofinAZ- Tyreality's comment is just following in the footsteps of Obama.
Such a wonderful thing he did. My daughter has Down Syndrome.
Bravo Corey Anderson!
No greater bravery can be exhibited than to risk your own life to help another.
You are a hero.
Our thoughts and prayers to young Kaeriel for a speedy and full recovery. You had a true Guardian Angel watching over you.
Ian-629477 (#1.25):
Your comment is just as bad--if not worse--than Ty's.
You need some education here--this is article is NOT about politics.
Don't be so ignorant, or maybe you just can't help yourself?????
"A door-to-door salesman selling home fire alarms." How ironic is that! I bet the parents bought all he had after saving thier child from their burning home. I am glad this humble man was there to save the day - a true hero.
Fire alarms really do save lives. A thing to remember, most Fire Departments give out free fire alarms, so if you don't have one or can't afford one, give them a call.
Reality, this was a brave action by a good man to help this woman; let moronic politics stay OUT of it and just beglad she's safe!
tryreality...stfu you p.o.s......now i can say what i really want to say.there are good people still out there folks no matter what race they are or what political view they share.just because your a left winger or a right winger doesn't make you bad or good.it's whom you are inside.
Well, he is a Texan! What he did was not political but wouldn't you guess that he is a republican, if he belongs to any party?
I helped to save a burning house when I was lad, at the time, I don't remember being affiliated with a party.
How does one's political leaning even enter into a story like this????
Mr. Anderson, you are one good man. Humanity thanks you.
Now this is REAL hero. One who responds to a situation without regard to his own personal safety, for the benefit of others. While some were touting the woman on the bus as a hero, I did not because she reacted to a sistuation that required action just to save herself if nothing else. This man could have just Stood by wringing his hands and hoping that the fire dept. responded quickly enough to handle it. Instead he acted without regard for himself and entered into personal danger and saved the life of someone he didn't even know. This man deserves ALL of the kudos and reward that he receives, and I hope it is plentiful. May his life be blessed for this act of bravery.
Mr. Anderson you have my admiration and respect for this great act.
As for the jerk at the beginning of this comment thread? Yeah well, not worth considering.
The teacher that I was catching a ride to school with, pulled over, said he saw flames in the window. We rushed in, door was not locked, yelling, to rouse anyone. No one answered. We cracked a door open and under the smoke we saw flames on the far wall. I grabbed a bucket of water that was sitting on the kitchen counter, no indoor plumbing I suppose. I got ready, he threw open the door and I rushed under the smoke, with one motion, I threw the water from the floor to the ceiling. A ball of steam rose and doused the flames.
The mattress was still smoldering and I was relieved to see that there was no one on it. We grabbed a corner that was not burning and pulled it out the back door. There, sitting under a tree, was the old fellow, with a puzzled look on his face.
The teacher began opening the house while I refilled the bucket from a faucet. Some high school boys stopped to help but the teacher sent them on to school to call the fire department, no cell phones in those days.
By the time the firemen arrived, the smoke was mostly aired out. Like Anderson, I did not think that I was a hero and a good thing too, no one else did either! :)
Right on Corey Anderson. God bless you. This is something he can be proud of the rest of his life. However people there is no such thing as karma. Believe me i know. tryreality-1568930 was the first jack ass to show up.
This isn't the right time for jerks to be stupid!
Corey Anderson, you did great, dude!! Best wishes Kaeriel for a speedy recovery!
the worst part is seven idiots agreed with him/her ............sad.....
A man selling fire alarms rescues a girl from a house fire.
Now THAT is irony in action.
Good job Mr Anderson.
May his bravery and kindness to others be returned to him and his loved ones many times over during his life.
Well said, sir.
I love a humble hero. The world needs more of them. I have a lot of respect for this man.
i hope they decided to by a fire alarm package from the guy who rescued the teen
good one mark, they could sure use one!
Lovely story, I'm so glad that it ended well and he was there to save her. A humble hero speaks louder then one who boasts. Good for him.
We should all be the kind of person Jesus was. That we should be willing to lay down OUR own life for another. If you know you're going to Heaven when you die, it's worth saving another life whose fate you're unsure of in the everafter. Good Job to you Cory Anderson. You have made your parents very proud for you act of bravery. Not everyone would have the prescence of mind to kick the windows in. It makes us proud to know you are out there! Have a wonderful life. May God bless you many fold over.
I try all the time. But whenever I try to walk on water I just end up wet, and the last time I tried to raise the dead I was arrested for breaking into the morgue. I tried sharing bread and fish but sadly I simply ended up with really smelly hands and a whole lot of cats around my house..
knowing Garland Texas, it is a wonder he has not been charged with,"Breaking & Entering."
^^^Azzzwhole^^^
No worries cowCLowntrucker is to busy sucking tryreality-1568930 off..
So folks, there is a good human being on the face of the planet after all, if he's not a hero, what would one be?
so right, first time in a long time "hero" is appropriate.
I am glad to read a news story with a happy ending instead of it being tragedy all of the time. Also, maybe Mr. Anderson should consider a career change to be a fireman. It is never to late and he did a great job at this home saving this lady. Either way I wish him all the best and to the lady rescued too.
Amen, Mom
I'd love to see more "happy ending" stories. Props to the guy that went into the burning house to save a stranger.
A wonderful ending to a story that could have been a tragedy. Good luck in the future to Mr. Anderson, and the lady he saved. And hopefully the people that lost their house can somehow find another decent home.
I'm thinking that the family should buy the security system with fire alarm from this guy.
They don't mention that they did not have one. Not that it would have helped much, seeing as the kid was already yelling for help, she was probably aware there was a fire.
Once again, the right person, at the right place, at the right time to do the right thing, and another hero is born. They don't know it, but they are everywhere, and when their personal "bat signal" goes off, we are honored to meet them.
@Rick-well said sir. A hero in the deepest sense of the word. Corey-may the Karma Goddess repay you many times over during the course of your life. Thank you for giving the human race reason to believe that Good will always triumph!
What a heart-warming story -- I would like to buy some fire alarms from him!! And Mom in Illinois has a good point -- perhaps try a career change to fireman!! Side note: though being a caretaker is tough, it is dangerous to leave home alone any children or adults who aren't able to deal with emergencies like this. They are at risk.
This is George Bush's fault.
Yup, and Pres. Bush caused the meteor in Russia too! We are going to have to do something with that guy! And Hey, I really like this CreekDog guy...He's the man!
Keith, Keith, Keith... you bit on the bait. The only way trolls like J. Mark Lane and tryreality will go away is if we completely ignore them. Meanwhile... nice story... right guy, right place... right time.
Great story! One for the good guys. On the other hand, as a salesman selling home security systems...smoke has to look like a pretty good lead! Ok, Ok....I jest.
well done sir, well done :)
Dear Alanis Morissette: This is what irony looks like.
Mr. Anderson is AWESOME. Someone needs to give this guy a really good job. I'm sure he would rise in any organization where leadership qualities are valued.
We cheapen the word hero by inappropriate overuse but it absolutely applies here.
Great story with a very happy ending! Kaeriel had a guardian angel looking after her and Mr. Anderson sure fit the description. How Ironic Mr. Anderson sells home fire alarms. Great job!!
Great job, Corey Anderson!
another travelling salesman donated a kidney when he came across a patient in a house
Not trying to sound negative but I hope Mr Anderson didn't start the fire setting himself up for some free advertising?
Too late. Not only negative but idiotic as well.
Well mr know it all Orlando, it doesn't say how the fire started yet, but it sounds like your another psychic that knows all the facts
that was a little off jack!
No Jack, that was WAY off. He somehow started the fire before he got to the house? Nice trick.
This man is a hero plain and simple. As the resuced person brother said" He could of just dialed 911 or kept walking" But he did not. He acted and did what was right.
We need more stories like these.
Mr.Anderson know you are a hero. I don't care how humble you are ( respectable). And also know this there are other people out their who would do the same for you!
I hope this truly is a situation in which the salesman was a hero. However, I hope officials are also checking into whether or not this was arson, a fire started so the salesman could be a hero and sell more product. Just too coincidental.
I said the exact same thing a few minutes ago and people are already knocking my post, good luck with yours Watch
are you 2 guys together behind tha grassy knoll?
Brainded, it wouldn't be the first time someone who instigated a problem was deemed a hero for just happening to be there to rescue someone. I hope I'm wrong, I'm just saying it's a possibility that should be investigated.
Watching, I bet your dad still questions your mom on whether you are his or not. Only a sick individual would think of that.
Unreal, evidently you are not familiar with the "hero syndrome." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero_syndrome
There have been several cases in the news over the years of people like firefighters who start fires and then rush in as heros. It doesn't take a "sick" individual to think of that, just an aware one who follows the news. Now, you can go back under your rock now.
(Edit myself: "heroes.")
I knew that was going to come out. When they come around the neighborhood wanting to fix the chips in your windshield you have to be very careful.
I don't know why many got upset over what Jack and Watching said as that would be a part of any kind of criminal investigation. Unless you all think that being deemed under "hero" status somehow precludes a "hero" from committing crimes, you need to think about it. As said by most though and until proven otherwise, this guy did a great deed as it stands.
Thankyou Tommy6860, I said the same thing a few posts ago and got knocked down as well
That was my first thought too.
A "hero" can be of any profession :-)
I work with heroes every day who put their lives on the line to save children, beloved family pets, and have a few who live next door who fought in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and another neighbor who just returned from Iraq.
Hey, I just met you,
And this is crazy.
I set this fire,
So call me, maybe.
(joking)
Soldiers, athletes, firemen, police officers are not automatically heroes. They are people doing what they signed on to do. A hero is someone who goes above and beyond and at risk of danger to themselves, to help another being (whether human or animal). This man performed a heroic act risking his life to help another human; he is a hero.
I would agree with you on the athletes. However, the others. Would you be willing to sign the dotted line that means you might very well not come home the next time you go to work?
He saw smething wrong and reacted. I'm thankful that e did react. He saved a life hat day.
I wonder how may other people would react the way Mr. Anderson. A BIG THANK YOU t Mr. Anderson.
