Subscribe to RSSA 72-year-old man was fatally shot early Saturday in his gangway on Chicago's Far South Side, officials said.
William Strickland was on his way to dialysis when he was shot in what appeared to be a robbery, police said.
Strickland's family said they're shocked by the "senseless" act and that Strickland, who recently retired from a steel mill after 28 years of employment, was kind-hearted and generous.
"He was getting up this morning, going to dialysis so he could try and live his life a little longer and they just zapped it from him," said brother-in-law Kevin Smith.
Strickland's daughter said those who knew her father knew he didn't deserve this.
"I'm going to truly, really, really, miss my father," she said.
Police taped off area on the corner of 95th Street and Eberhart Avenue and remained on the scene for much of Saturday morning.
Neighbors said the area is mostly filled with retired or older residents and typically has little violence.
"We're not used to [violence] here. It's a close neighborhood," said Jonathan Garener. "William was a wonderful guy. I feel like I lost a role model."

In the past 20 years, violent crime has increased more than four times faster than the population. Young b1lacks (under 18) are more violent than previous generations and are 12 times more likely to be arrested for murder than young whites.Nearly all the following figures, which speak for themselves, have not been reported in America:• According to the latest US Department of Justice survey of crime victims, more than 6.6 million violent crimes (murder, ra pe, assault and robbery) are committed in the US each year, of which about 20 per cent, or 1.3 million, are inter-racial crimes
• Most victims of race crime—about 90 per cent—are white, according to the survey "Highlights from 20 Years of Surveying Crime Victims", published in 1993.
• Almost 1 million white Americans were murdered, robbed, assaulted or ra ped by b1lack Americans in 1992, compared with about 132,000 b1lacks who were murdered, robbed, assaulted or ra ped by whites, according to the same survey.
• B1lacks thus committed 7.5 times more violent inter-racial crimes than whites even though the b1lack population is only one-seventh the size of the white population. When these figures are adjusted on a per capita basis, they reveal an extraordinary disparity: b1lacks are committing more than 50 times the number of violent racial crimes of whites.
• According to the latest annual report on murder by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, most inter-racial murders involve b1lack assailants and white victims, with b1lacks murdering whites at 18 times the rate that whites murder b1lacks.These breathtaking disparities began to emerge in the mid-1960's, when there was a sharp increase in b1lack crime against whites, an upsurge which, not coincidentally, corresponds exactly with the beginning of the modern civil rights movement.
Over time, the cumulative effect has been staggering. Justice Department and FBI statistics indicate that between 1964 and 1994 more than 25 million violent inter-racial crimes were committed, overwhelmingly involving b1lack offenders and white victims, and more than 45,000 people were killed in inter-racial murders. By comparisons 58,000 Americans died in Vietnam, and 34,000 were killed in the Korean war.
When non-violent crimes (burglary, larceny, car theft and personal theft) are included, the cumulative totals become prodigious. The Bureau of Justice Statistics says 27 million non-violent crimes were committed in the US in 1992, and the survey found that 31 per cent of the robberies involved b1lack offenders and white victims (while only 2 per cent in the reverse).When all the crime figures are calculated, it appears that b1lack Americans have committed at least 170 million crimes against white Americans in the past 30 years.

Then why are the crime rates in all but one of the surrounding states so much lower?
In the last 50 or so years is the Secular Progressive agenda has wove its tentacles into society. Family is irrelevant. Dads are irrelevant. Males are irrelevant or even 'need' to be marginalized. Morals and Personal Responsibility are irrelevant.
My point is, since the 60's and the Liberal Progressive march toward hedonism in this country, with the rise of the welfare state, abortion and easy divorce, discipline in this country is gone. There are no consequences. No longer are men being raised by fathers. And how do you become a real man, if you don't have one to show you the way? Granted it isn't always successful, but it seemed to be more successful than the alternative.
And if you look at our history. There is a direct correlation between the rise in violence and an increase in the frequency of the attacks like Sandy Hook, and the Civil Rights Movement (that included "protection" of the mentally ill), Social Justice, and Government Social Programs. Some of which started with the first "Social Engineering" project called Prohibition, and continues with the ineffective 'war' on drugs.
Most people say it is because we moved away from God, or took God out of the schools. No, it is because we moved away from the True Intent of the Constitution (under FDR) and began to ask/let Government "solve" our problems. When in fact the Constitution gives the Federal Government no authority to do so.

I agree wholeheartedly that if this happens, firearm deaths in Chicago will drop.
Now we just need to convince the rest of the world ("outside of Chicago") to stop making guns and surrender all they have.
Lets shut down all the black markets: drugs, guns, prostitutes, slaves etc...
While we are at it, lets ask the whole world to stop making and smoking cigarettes, eating junk food, raping each other, and driving poorly on the roads.
If we can do this, if we can remove the possibility that Chicago residents can possibly purchase guns, then the effort is well worth the "challenging" task ahead of us.

As NoLiberty indicated you can't stop making guns so you have to take another path.
The data clearly shows that were there is more guns there is generally less murders. Russia has among the toughest gun laws of any developed nation yet they have the highest murder rates; Russia has 20 deaths/100,000 with 4,000 guns owned/100,000. The US has 4.7 deaths/100,000 with 89,000 guns/100,000. This trend is the same throughout Europe and Canada.
Chicago has very strict gun laws so the good citizens [disarmed] are not able to fight back and the criminals know it. We are also developing a culture amongst good people that teaches them guns are tools to fear..... a gun could get up on its own and kill you, fighting back with equal or greater force is unsporting.
Unfortunately as the criminals build their arsenal it will become even more difficult to uproot them and I am sure they are very pleased to know we are on the verge of enacting even more stringent gun laws nationally.
Per Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy [Vol 30] "Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide" the root of the evil is not so much guns but a socio-economic and just plain culture. If the criminals don't have guns [like Russia] they will kill you by other means. Over 90% of the murders are done by people who are already criminals.....good people don't kill.
To do away with guns and expect good citizens to go up against the criminals with knives and baseball bats is insane.

Would be nice but also likely wouldn't put a dent in the murder ratio per state.. The people who do @!$%# like this don't usually consider laws or punishment when committing the crimes. You'd also bump the rate of wrongful executions but a staggering rate due to the growing number of murders re-solved or reinvestigated each year which find the convicted 'killer' was innocent the whole time...
None the less if it can be proven beyond any reason of doubt that they have murdered an innocent person, then walking them to a firing squad right outside the courthouse would be fair, in my opinion.
Illinois has abolished the death penalty - for criminals. However, criminals still exercise the death penalty against law abiding citizens and a few criminals.
A rope and a tree within 7 days of conviction, 30 days maximum for any appeal. Would save a lot of money.
The drug gangs rule Chicago. Underused school closings always have to consider moving kids across gang boundaries. It gets worse every year. The people elect Democrats, like Obama, and the gangs prosper and kill. The Democrat Party has never done a thing to rid the city of the drug gangs. They can't use police because Jesse Jackson and Obama will hang any cop who shoots one their own!
As I always say, dissolve the war on drugs and watch the gangs disappear. There will still be robberies, but less crime overall.

Chicago could cut its violent crime in half by simply adding firearms education for everyone, and a gun to every adult who satisfactorily passes the class. Add a "stand your ground" law, and gun crimes would be cut by 90%.

I would like it much better if the criminal:
1. Pulled out a knife & slowly carved me up like a Thanksgiving Day turkey while I'm still alive
2. Beat me slowly to death with a crow bar/baseball bat
3. Threw gasoline on me & set me on fire
4. Slowly suffocated me to death with a piece of rope
5. Threw me off the roof of a 5 story building
6. Held my head underwater until I drown
7. Took an ice pick & shoved it through my skull
8. Ran me over with his car multiple times
etc....etc......
Yeah, I would have time to enjoy my death so much more if a criminal used one of these other methods to end my life, rather than him shooting me. Shooting someone is just so impersonal.

1930 Chicago Elliot Ness and the FBI had shoot outs with Al Capone and the mafia. By 1937 most of the terror ended. Today the authorities know who and where the gangs are but shooting them and killing them all would be called racism against black and Latino teenagers and a massacre.
