Demolition begins on home in Florida sinkhole tragedy

Authorities in Florida are tearing down the home covering the huge sinkhole that swallowed a man in his bedroom, NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

Crews began demolishing a Florida home Sunday that is perched over a huge sinkhole, after deeming it too dangerous to keep searching for the man swallowed up from his bedroom.

Rescue workers on Saturday had called off their search for 36-year-old Jeffrey Bush, who had not been heard from since the hole appeared at about 11 p.m. ET Thursday in Seffner, near Tampa.

“Unfortunately we have not been able to determine the whereabouts of Mr. Bush,” Hillsborough County Administrator Mike Merrill said. “With all the equipment that we brought in and specialized help, we have just not been able to locate Mr. Bush, and so for that reason the rescue effort is being discontinued.”

Authorities have said the hole, which was originally about 30 feet deep, was “seriously unstable.” A 100-foot safety zone was set up around it Friday and homes near the hole were evacuated for fear of a sudden collapse.

Demolition crews and Hillsborough County Fire Department watch as the house, where Jeffrey Bush was swallowed by a sinkhole, is demolished in Seffner, Florida March 3, 2013.

The sinkhole now poses a safety risk to the residence next door, said Hillsborough County Fire Rescue public information officer Ronnie Rivera at a noon press conference on Saturday. Family members would be allowed to enter briefly along with emergency personnel to recover belongings, Rivera said.

The demolition started at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, and wrapped up for the day at about noon. It was expected to resume again on Monday.

Authorities were able to retrieve a few personal belongings from the destroyed house for the family, including photographs, a Bible and even the wood address marker from the front of the building.

A second family in an adjacent home began moving their possessions out on Saturday afternoon as authorities struggled to get an accurate read on just how large the sinkhole is.

Authorities brought in heavy equipment to demolish the home from outside the perimeter of the sinkhole, which Merrill said extends down as much as 50 to 60 feet.

“We’re dealing with a very unusual sinkhole,” Merrill said. “It’s very deep, it’s very wide, it’s very unstable.”

Hillsborough County, Florida officials lay out their plan going forward at the site of a sinkhole that appeared beneath a home and is believed to have killed one of the residents.

On Friday, Jeremy Bush spoke tearfully about how he tried to save his brother.

"I couldn't get him out," he said. "All I thought I could hear was him screaming for me and hollering for me, but I couldn't do nothing."

Jeremy Bush was saved from the hole by Hillsborough County sheriff's Deputy Douglas Duvall, NBC station WFLA reported.

'Really shocking'

Neighbors told NBC station WFLA.com of their surprise.

"It's just really shocking," said Kevin Charles, who lives two houses down from the Bush’s house. "It kind of worries me because … it could have been any one of these houses along this side over here.”

"I think the issue now is everyone in the area is going to sit back and wonder whether should get sinkhole insurance," said neighbor Steve Hamlyn. "Because we really didn't see a need for it until now."

One man is presumed dead after being sucked into the earth as he was sleeping, and now other families in the neighborhood are on edge. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

While some in the neighborhood did not know of the risks, sinkholes are common in Florida, The Associated Press reported, and home insurers are required by law to provide coverage for the sudden disaster.

Florida’s geological makeup increases the likelihood of sinkholes, and more than 500 have been reported in Hillsborough County since 1954, the state’s environmental agency told the AP. A monster 400-foot sinkhole that sucked in a house, five sports cars, two businesses and part of a swimming pool appeared near Orlando in 1981.

"You can almost envision a piece of Swiss cheese," Taylor Yarkosky, a sinkhole expert from Brooksville, Fla, told the AP. "Any house in Florida could be in that same situation."

At a press conference at 8 a.m. ET Saturday, fire officials announced they had set up an email address, accessible at www.firefighter-relief.com, for anyone wishing to send message of condolences or donations to the family.

NBC News' Gabe Gutierrez and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

And besides, bigredmch, way too early in the day to hand that award out...

r bondy, my guess is bc occurrences in nature do not have neat, straight lines, angles... is may also be some kind of cylindrical thing, whooshing, swirling, however to describe it... great question, we should google it :)... maybe it is the coriolis effect

A dildo probably caused the large chasm in the first place, the size of some of those toys would make a horse blush. No man can compete with a Rabbit (sex toy) - no wonder women take forever to orgasm, the old fashioned way, you know, with another human...but I'm still willing to try. Personally, I took the time to research where a woman's secret spots are - women get really embarrassed when they find out at 45 years old - that they are a squirter...lol. At 55 years old - just a puff of dust comes out, that's what happens when the only time you use it is on Valentines day and his birthday. If women actually had sex as much as they talk about having sex - the world would be a very peaceful place.

I guess Florida doesn't have any vacuum trucks - our old Vac-Con would have that hole sucked out in a day, tops.

Starsailing; according to the Alien Hunters - the core of the earth is hollow and outer space aliens live there - so the illegal alien would have run into real aliens before he got to China.

In my experience digging holes for a living - you usually came across a BFR (big @!$%#ing rock) if you dug over 8 feet down. Looking back at some of the holes I worked in, I was really stupid - the things you will do for job security (that was pre OSHA days - the days neo-cons want to go back too). I recall one cave in at a private contractor sight - they panicked and tried to dig the guy out with a backhoe - cut him right in half they did.

It's not the coriolis effect! It's the same process involved when you turn an hourglass over. Isn't the depression that forms in the top of the hourglass usually round? It happens the same way with sinkholes.

It's been reported that a guy who looked a lot like Jeffrey Bush was seen emerging from a manhole in China. I know it's pretty far-fetched and hard to believe, but so is NOT BEING ABLE TO FIND A GUY IN A SINKHOLE. I really am sorry for his family and friends, and sincerely send my condolences, assuming that wasn't Jeffrey seen in China. How is it they can find a guy in a lake or river, but they can't find a guy in a friggin' sinkhole? I gotta be missing something here...don't they have grappling hooks heavy enough to be submerged in the sinkhole, where they could then grapple for the guy, rather than let him slowly decompose...in a friggin' sinkhole? I'll bet it could even be done from a distance. Geez..how would you feel if gramps was left in a sinkhole? Hey, where's your gramps, I haven't seen him lately? Well, gramps has been in the sinkhole in the bedroom for a couple of weeks. They tell us to just be patient, they'll be fishin' him out before too long. We've got a pool goin' for when gramps gets out of the sinkhole...whoever guesses closest to the day and time gramps is fished out gets a pair of hip waders to have on hand for the next sinkhole.

So I guess this means they are going to just leave the body down there? That doesn't seem right although I suppose if they are pretty sure the guy is dead they wouldn't want to risk any more lives to recover him. Seems kind of sad for the family to have to just leave him there.

Yes, I've been through many earthquakes and a couple of them were very large ones. If you aren't in a big building where it can collapse on you or where something can fall on you, you're going to be OK. The biggest danger is fire from ruptured gas lines.

I think it's mostly the reptiles that turn me off to Florida, plus I don't like flat land - mountains and rivers and natural beauty for me.

I went hiking/walking at nature preserve not too long ago and ran into a gator along the path! Little unnerving but kinda coolish. What I like here is the water. It's almost always warm enough to swim. No wet suits required for swimming, snorkeling, diving.

And it is flat! lol I love So. Cal. Spent some time there and I would totally live there.

Rachel, where do you live out there? I used to live close to the foothills in the Claremont, LaVerne area and I definitely remember the mudslides. Every time they have a lot of fires we could count on mudslides the following winter shutting down many roads. I'm now in the midwest but still love the Calif, just too many people and too much crime.

That picture of the South American sinkhole looks like a bottomless pit--very scary when you cant see the bottom of a big hole! I've stood at the edge of a mining shaft (when I was a kid up in the mountains east of Bakersfield, CA) that went straight down, threw a large rock in, and it disappeared--and I didn't hear it hit bottom. It was a bit unnerving, and I backed away from the edge of it.

That's nice! Just make sure you stay in your little area because the minute you step out of it, you are liable to be sucked immediately into hell. That's what's at the bottom of all these sink holes, you know. The Devil is making them open so he can suck all the unrepentant sinners into hell :)

Why does the FL building code allow construction of any kind in a known sinkhole area? Oh, wait, that would be most of FL wouldn't it.

Because people who choose to build there get the final say. The individual is the boss of the government, not the other way around.

This seems almost poetic justice for Florida! Everyone is rushing to the "Sunshine State" only to be plunged into darkness by sinkholes, hurricanes, alligators, pythons, crime, violence, and almost every otherwise repugnant thing that happens, much like the rest of the South. Divine will perhaps? Reap what you sow perhaps? More likely man-made and a product of reduced building standards, politicians, and public officials that take money to look the other way! I mean when you live in a severe weather area prone to hurricanes, rain, extreme heat and humidity, and you have building standards equal or less than that of India, what do you expect?

I wonder what leaking or damaged underground pipeline, or other construction shortcut is responsible for this sinkhole?

@Kenny - funny you slam the South. Because a lot of your fellow northern liberals transplant move there (especially Florida) after they destroy their own cities and states with outrageous taxes, out of control entitlement spending, and anti-business policies. Just ask BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Kia, and Hyundai why they chose Southern/Midwestern states to build their manufacturing plants in instead of say Michigan or New Jersey. And your fellow northern liberals can have your blizzards and high crime like in Chicago (with all those gun regulations and all, lol), thanks. Sorry bud, you stepped in it.

Please stay where you are and don't bring your path of destruction like the 1800s white man crossing the western plains killing off buffalo when life becomes too miserable (and tell that to your fellow liberals too).

Yes, because people can't do anything, good or bad, without government, right? How dare you blame the omnipotent government that you so often claim to be the saving grace of the country on most other posts.

Perhaps the people living in the area are aware of the risks, but chose to build there anyhow? Many times we measure risk against reward and reward wins. It is what it is.

I don't think the Mayans blamed the cenotes on the non-existent Mexican government, did they? Nope, they thought it a blessing and tossed others in as thanks.

Perhaps this marks the beginning of a recovery for our language. The next step could be for Americans to stop abbreviating everything and speaking almost solely in acronyms! I can dream, can't I?

So many of these sinkholes are caused by excessive rain that weakens the ground. If global climate change can cause more severe storms with excessive rain, will we see even more sinkholes occur around the world?

Also, fracking weakens underground structure. Will that cause more sinkholes?

You have to wonder... how much is man adding to a natural problem? How many other ways can we screw up nature?

The local Property Assessor will need to issue an amended ad valorem tax bill to reflect the additional living space on this parcel.

Also, did these folks get a Building Permit to construct this additional living space?

Why so many haters? Yep Fla has alligators, some hurricanes, etc. etc. But as far as crime and violence goes, what about the crime and violence that occurs in EVERY state in the U.S.? Unless you live here or have lived here, you cannot judge. I have lived in Southwest Fla for a while now and I really enjoy it. The sinkhole thing is scary but I gotta tell ya, there are idiot politicians and corrupt officials everywhere not just in the south. So you think people deserve some kind of poetic justice for wanting to live in the south? And this extreme heat and humidity? Yes it gets hot but its not what everyone thinks. It's so funny. I spent last 4th of July in the midwest and it was over 100 degrees with 100% humidity! It does not get that way down here near the ocean. So funny to watch so many ignorant comments. Unless you live in Florida or have lived here, do not presume to think you know what it's like here. If you don't like living here, leave!! At any rate I feel bad for those people, what a terrible way to go.

Wake up, please delete your comment at once - then I will delete mine. Do we really want all of these people to know that Florida is actually a pleasant place to live? I, too, have visited places that are much hotter in the summertime. Our heat just lasts a little longer; that's all. We do have our share of crazies (most originally from someplace else), but at least it is never boring. And those of us who have been here for a while know that the true beauty and magic of Florida are not at Disney World. My heart is broken for that man and his family, and I agree, it was a horrible and scary way to go, but it is important to remember that we all still have a better chance of being killed in a car accident in pretty much any area of the country than being swallowed by a sink hole. Crazy stuff happens everywhere, and we should be humbled by it, not critical of the victims.

This is such a sad and tragic situation. I feel for the family.

Looking at an overhead view of the house and surrounding area, it appears there is a large oval-shaped retention pond area behind the house. It appears also that the retention pond has very little water in it, and I wouldn't be surprised if the entire area behind the house is compromised. If I lived in the surrounding area, I'm not sure I would remain. All in all, it's a frightening prospect.

I find it both amazing and telling that so many here make jokes about this tragedy. Wait, I'm not amazed. Newsvine is a libtard haven and they are known for their lack of compassion.

What an awful way to go. May his family and friends be surrounded with love and care during their time of grief.

Two sink holes walk into a bar...

They asked the bartender for one drink and an extra glass. The bartender then asked "How low can you get?"

You hear more and more about sinkholes in Florida because those greedy idiotic developers and their government golfing buddies are trying to cover the state in concrete and pavement. Look around, you see now freaking housing developments popping up even in rural areas in the middle of swampland! So much for protecting wetland - the right political connections and bribing the right people do wonders...Thanks Gov. Rick Scott for doing a "wonderful " job protecting our ONCE beautiful state!!! Now this state is the paradise of Lennar, KB Homes and Co.

I had heard that investing in the Florida housing market was a big sinkhole, but this is taking it seriously.

But on a serious note, My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Being crushed and suffocated by sand is a harsh way to go.

Seems this is happening all over the world. Mother Earth is not happy with the destructive humans living all around her surface so she just opens up giant holes and swallows us up. You go girl.

"I think the issue now is everyone in the area is going to sit back and wonder whether should get sinkhole insurance," said neighbor Steve Hamlyn. "Because we really didn't see a need for it until now."

Please, do not give the insurance companies any more ideas!!

According to the article, there have been over 500 sinkholes in the county since 1954, and people didn't think that they needed sinkhole insurance? I'd say that more than a few individuals haven't been paying attention.

Have you ever had a dream you was falling?

Well wouldn't this suck the big one.. Being woke up from a dream.. And be falling.

I feel sorry for this mans family and him. This would surely be a scary way to go. No telling how far it falls goes down.
