'Tan Mom' Patricia Krentcil looking for her place in the sun

Jonathan Sanger / NBC News

Patricia Krentcil, at her home in Nutley, N.J., is hoping to turn her notoriety into a lotion line, a book and a comedy act.

The New Jersey woman known as "Tan Mom" has big plans now that the criminal case against her is over: a self-tanning lotion line, a book proposal, a comedy act — and a raft of lawsuits.

But right now what Patricia Krentcil wants is a vacation.

"Somewhere hot so I can fry like a bacon and come back and say, 'Ha! Ha! You can't arrest me for lying in the sun,'" Krentcil, 44, said with a laugh.

"Not my face, though. Just my body."

It was Krentcil's face — practically the color of a chestnut in some photos — that made her a national punchline after she was arrested in May and charged with exposing her then-five-year-old daughter, Anna, to damaging ultraviolet rays at tanning salons in Nutley, N.J.

Julio Cortez / AP file

Patricia Krentcil as she waited to be arraigned at the Essex County Superior Court in May.

Krentcil denied it from the start, claiming a school nurse misinterpreted a sunburn Anna got from playing outside and that police misunderstood when her daughter said she "went tanning with Mommy."

Last week, a grand jury declined to indict her on a child endangerment charge, ending a 10-month saga that the mother of five described a nightmare.

"I’ve literally been stuck in my home for the past year," she said. "No matter where I go, everyone knows me. It’s very uncomfortable."

If she went out to eat, a murmur would run through the restaurant. A sofa-shopping trip had to be cut short when other customers started taking pictures. She was the object of ridicule in her children's schools.

"It doesn't matter where I go: I'm 'Tan Mom,'" she said.

She couldn't shake the nickname, so she embraced it, making TV appearances and getting a magazine makeover.

Over the last few months, she's been working with a self-styled skin guru, Dana Ramos, on launching her own line of self-tanners under the name Real Tan Mom Healthy Glow.

Ramos, who has her own skin-care line, helped rehabilitate Krentcil's complexion, which was marred by oversize pores, dark spots, and lines from up to 20 sessions in the tanning bed each month.

She said she banned Krentcil from tanning -- many salons said they wouldn't serve her anyway -- and oversaw a regimen of peels and moisturizers. A plastic surgeon helped with some fillers.

"I haven't tanned in forever," Krentcil said, sounding not entirely happy about it.

She vowed she'll never set foot in another salon, but insisted there's nothing wrong with catching some natural rays, along as she keeps the sun off her paler, but hardly porcelain face.

With her stock broker husband out of work and thousands in legal bills to pay, Krentcil is looking for other ways to cash in on her notoriety beyond the lotion line, which is weeks away from being finished.

She said she is writing a book, but doesn't have an agent or publisher. Once the subject of a "Saturday Night Live" sendup, she'd like to leverage her wacky story and offbeat personality for a comedy routine.

And she's ready for warmer climes.

"I don't like this town at all or this state, more or less ... I wanna go somewhere beautiful," she said.

In an exclusive interview with TODAY from May of 2012, Patricia Krentcil, the New Jersey mom accused of taking her five-year-old daughter into a tanning booth, insisted she is innocent and said she wishes everyone would leave her family alone. NBC's Mara Schiavocampo reports.

Krentcil said she is planning lawsuits against anyone who made money off her story, like the manufacturers of a Barbie-type doll  based on her, or Halloween costumes.

She said she also wants to sue the school district since that's where the initial complaint about Anna's sunburn came from. The district superintendent did not return a call for comment.

Nearly a year after her arrest, Krentcil said she’s at a loss to explain why the authorities went after her. "Envy? Jealousy?" she said.

She's certainly not ready to forgive and forget, boasting that when the school nurse called recently about her daughter being ill, she barked at her, "Oh, you didn't call the police?"

For the record, she said, she never once put her child in a tanning bed. The fair-skinned redhead would lie on towels on the floor, sometimes with a mask over her eyes, while her mother soaked up the UV rays, she said.

At one point, she was offered a plea deal with 60 days of probation and turned it down, deciding she'd take her chances with a jury if it came to that.

"They made a mockery of me,” she said. “But I stood by my beliefs and said, 'I did not do this.'"

Though I don't think her tanning habits are healthy, I give her my respect for sticking by her guns and her beliefs, instead of taking a plea deal. If the world thought I wrongly hared my child I'd fight tooth and nail until I had no fight left in me to have the truth known. I hope she wins her lawsuits. Not because her kooky tanning habits were harmless, or anything like that...but because a year of dealing with authorities, her children dealing with CPS, and overall just the hell her family surely had to go through unjustly. They could surely use it to rebuild their lives, possibly relocate. Best wishes, though at the very least I hope she learned something from this ordeal, and came out stronger from it.

This woman freak is a nutcase. She whines and crys that she is being persecuted yet starts another story that she want to go fry like bacon. She is a bad example for her kids and is the poster child for skin cancer. I hope she gets nothing in any lawsuit and learns to shut her piehole.............

YTF is this news? This lady is playing the media for attention and MSNBC is idiotic enough to play along and give her what she craves. In the real world nobody cares about this nut or any of the other egomaniacs out there that are just seeking attention. Surely there has to be something more interesting in the world today than this national enquirer news story NBC is deciding to headline.

she has a reason to be pi$$ed and to sue... some people dont realise what its like to be put in an unsavory and unwanted spotlight when it is an untruth being told. biscuits to doughnuts, she was like one of you who said the same thing about those who have a legit reason to sue the pants off a few people/entities, but when it comes to the line...

i cant say i blame her 1 bit. her reputation was trashed, and no matter what one looks like on the outside, they still have feelings on the inside.

she also isnt sueing the government, other than the school... if someone made a profit at your exspence.... dont lis and say you wouldnt leave a vapor trail on your way to the lawyers office... if you say no i wouldnt, youre a liar, lol

This woman is getting very popular, as I recently saw where she cut a deal with Rawlings Sporting Goods to endorse a special line of baseball gloves and catchers mitts, made from "fine, Krencil leather"! And the local diner has also named a special after her, the "Krencil, lettuce and tomatoe sandwich"! Thank God she had her face peeled off as that first one was butt ugly! Instead of a line of tanning creams, she should come out with her own line of "Tanning Mom Face Bondo" to fill in the holes and pockmarks created by years of frying in a tanning bed.

I saw a picture of her standing naked for the camera, and her body looked like a Bassett hounds face!

*sigh* it never fails. on every comment thread for every topic, the neocons knuckle-walk out of their little caves and politicize every thread, no matter the topic. "libbies this and libs that" waaaaaaaah! how sad that they have to react like cornered animals rather than try to engage in any thoughtful conversation.

first of all, Obama isn't coming to take away your guns, secondly, if you need 30 rounds to hit your target you're a sh1tty shot and lastly, gee, it's a good thing the neocons aren't trying to ban anything...

that is, except for the voting rights of a large segment of the population.....and much of women's reproductive health care...oh, and there's that right to free speech of anybody who doesn't fit into their narrow worldview......and don't forget that they want to dictate who can and cannot marry the person they love ....yeah and even those evil Girl Scouts! (LOL @ that neanderthal Bob Morris) *gasp* cookies are a threat to family values!

Geez. This isn't about liberals or conservatives or Mr. Obama. This lady has serious issues and the school had reasons to report her considering the situation and what the girl said she did. So now she thinks she will make a fortune off her obsession and I say whatever. Anyone who would buy a sun-related product from her is missing other most likely better products, but if her daughter is healthy and not being fried then who cares what she does? I am way past thinking about her after I hit the period at the end of this sentence.

Bulldozer what rights are Conservatives taking away? Don't you have to show an ID to cash a check? Voting is a huge PRIVILEGE. People are taking advantage of you bleeding hearts mindset and voting two and three times.

I don't recall anyone saying women shouldn't be able to get pap smears or any other medical treatment. They don't all even say abortions should be completely banned. However, when a baby is at eight months gestation, it's not a fetus anymore. That baby could be born and live without any assistance. It shouldn't be a mother's right to kill it.

nobody is suggesting that it does not exist, but it occurs about as often as a human gets struck by lightning and it is being used as an excuse to disenfranchise students, the elderly, minorities---voters who typically vote democratic. voter suppression is unconstitutional and it should concern you.

what a loser. She plans on suing everyone because she is a pathetic mooch who wants money for nothing. People who file multiple lawsuits for petty non-reasons are just greedy pigs taking advantage of the legal system, for personal gain they do not deserve. At least the people who made money off of her had some talent--they MADE something (a doll), they wrote some funny jokes, etc. They did something to DESERVE the money they made off of her. What did she do to deserve money except make a giant fool of herself? And seriously--she is going to write a book? She is a laughing stock with a leather face, with some kind of bizarre addiction--who cares what she has to say. What exactly does she have to write a book about? Her story is not that interesting. And she is going to create a comedy routine? God, you had your 15 minutes of undeserved fame, lady--now get on with your life. No one cares anymore.Actually people stopped caring exactly three seconds after they read your three paragraph, fluff-piece news story months ago, and then got over their shock and disgust, (and snorts of ridicule), at your ruined, "California Raisin" of a face. What a pathetic person, trying to live off of her millisecond of infamy for the rest of her life...

She should have to pay higher premiums for her health insurance. Same with smokers and people who are overweight. Things that you bring upon yourself should impact you financially. I'm getting a little pudgy around the middle and would need to pay more... but maybe it would be an incentive to shed a few pounds.

          #1.45 - Tue Mar 5, 2013 3:36 PM EST

She needs a vacation - from what? She doesn't work, she said herself she's been hanging around her house for a year - well, with the exception of quite a few red carpet events she was photographed at that someone surely paid for her flight, accomodations and evening gowns.

Did the law and the press jump the gun about her daughter and the tanning bed? Yes. Did these same people force her to tan so much that she has become disfigured? No. Did these same people also force this supposedly broke family to pay for these tanning sessions - and cigarettes? Again, no. She brought most of this on herself. I only feel sorry for her in that she apparently doesn't have the sense to get herself out of her own harm's way.

Kronkite, I do get sarcasm. I employ it on a regular basis. However, on every comment thread some bonehead politicizes the topic--99% of the time it's somebody blaming "libs" for something---and when called out on they say they were just being "sarcastic". uh huh. it's so sad, they think they're being witty and clever when really all they do is make themselves look unfortunate and unoriginal.

I thought you were doing the same thing and I apologize if that is not the case. and no, I do not have my defenses up. I pretty much don't give a rip what a bunch of anonymous people think of me so it would make being defensive kinda pointless. I am, however, in snark overload today. must've been something in my breakfast cereal this morning

FlatIron, I never said that liberals don't do it. They just do it far less often than the the neocons. FAR less.

                #1.52 - Tue Mar 5, 2013 8:39 PM EST

Bulldozer, fair enough. I, too, can't stand how non-political stories get burdened with political rhetoric. Sadly, though, it's not just liberal bashing. Many times it seems almost equal the bashing of liberals and of conservatives on The Vine. Kind of points out the near 50/50 divide this country has had for so long. Too bad the school system long ago forgot how to teach compromise as a means of conflict resolution as it is evident that "rational" adults in leadership positions so often want win/lose scenarios (oh, crap, I just opened up another whole line that someone is going to want to get all in an uproar over [humor/sarcasm everyone, leave it be]).

And, I really didn't call you out specifically. It was clear to me that some on this thread were being incredibly sarcastic (which made me laugh aloud) while others were not (which I tend to ignore). Sorry if I made you feel picked on. I try to never make a comment or reply to one individual or post - we are all entitled to believe what we want and to say what we want. If we all agreed on everything, that would be boring. Have a better day.

Yeppers, and the treatments are godawful. And some of us didn't do what that broad is doing and still got melanoma.

the fact that she likes to deep fry her face is immasterial to me. when a school official hears a the woman's daughter say "mommy takes me tanning" when the kid is sunburned, warrants some further investigation, This woman is nuts. dont complqain about the school's behavior. the school is damned if it does and damned if it doesnt

This lady has serious attention issues, and idiotic venues like this joke of a news outlet just keeps it rolling along. And she wonders why people look at her funny. If she wants to look like a piece of burnt saddlebag, I say go knock yourself out. But we should not be giving her any more coverage. And her husband's pick in stocks doesn't seem too far off in his pick of a soul mate, both appear to be losers.

If I am not mistkaen, all that help for her face has made it more sensitive to the sun and UV. If she goes out on the beach or wherever, a simple hat or even hard sunscreen isn't going to to do much good short of using a complete block. I can see her on the lying on the beach with her body soaking up the sun and her face covered in Zinc Oxide (lifeguard sunblock)

                              Burning Beaches!

And what about the mothers and fathers that huddle on every inch of the seashore in the summer so that you can barely see the sand, letting their babies bake in the hot sun on the coastline beaches? Some with protective lotion and some without, burning their tender skin. Should we not arrest them as well?

That situation is even worse as many stay for the entire day exposed to ultraviolet radiation on cloud cover days and early in the morning hours and then clear, baking sun. I've seen it myself.

I protected my children, but parents these days are different. But how do we distinguish between this "Tan Mom" and the masses that populate the beaches? Elderly care, too. I see more elderly on the beaches now that many children are caring for their parents in their homes - taking elderly Mother and Father with them so that they can go to the beach. If the visit is within reason, great. If they languish on the beach all day, leaving their loved ones exposed, not great.

I think this is a can of worms that was opened against a single mother, simply to bully her.

American society is very nasty at times for one that claims to be non-judgmental or not a caste society.

Case would have been tossed out in my courtroom unless prosecution had strong circumstantial or material evidence showing actual injury to the child caused by the tanning bed or adjacent space and that injury was actually or proximately caused by the negligent parental care.

We cannot legislate against every move we make or society will be impossible to live in. The last I heard, the United States was a free nation.

Anyone who tans that often has psychological issues that need to be addressed. Her self esteem must be very low but that is her issue to deal with.

This lady needs to take the money she spends on tanning and spend it on psychological therapy. Whatever is festering inside her is oozing out onto the surface. Her comments about still wanting to fry like bacon prove she's just been putting on a show for the court and the moderately cleaned up face is just a mask.

Borimir...did you read the article? The only reason her face looks somewhat normal now is due to the number of cosmetic procedures she had done to get it back to looking somewhat healthy; cosmetic procedures also have their own level of risk. She wasn't prosecuted so she got her day in court. It was her own appearance and, well, addiction, for lack of a better term, to lying in a tanning bed that addded to the media circus.

I don't care what this woman does to herself. She is an adult and entitled to make her own decisions for herself. However, if (and I emphsize IF) she subjects her children to harmful situations, then that is a different matter. I agree that she probably has self-esteem issues; and she certainly seems greedy and self-centered. She says she wants to sue everybody for (pick an issue); her husband is out of work apparently, and I'm guessing that the money well is drying up or soon will. At least she is honest is saying what she wants to do - she is looking for another piggy bank to pay for her lifestyle. There are, I daresy, some mental health issues there. It is a shameful story, and I feel particularly sorry for her children who will be impacted by her actions. For those who seem to admire her for sticking to her guns? That is a good thing most of the time, but standing stubbornly for something with potential serious harm (which in the end could cost taxpayers for medical care) is not neccessarily a good thing. i wish that whole family well, and will pray for the well-being of the children. She looked so much better before her obsession struck; now she just looks haggard and old. I grew up on the beach, tanned all year round before we understood the effects of the UV rays. Today, I am more careful, still take my time on the beach and get tanned, but am more circumspect in how it is done. Tanning booths should be outlawed in my humble opinion because I believe they are more harmful then the sun. I may be wrong and don't mind anyone pointing it out, just be kind please in your assessment. Have a happy day all.

Agree with Boromir. There are so many people doing ugly things to their bodies. You could ask the same questions to someone with a ring through their lip, or huge holes in their ears, or ink all over, or puffed up - name a part, any part...just ugly as sin.

Are sizers those big round holes? I realized the other day just what they were when I had the misfortune to get a close up look to the technician at the emissions testing station...I always thought they were earrings of a sort that made it LOOK like a hole.
