A boy riding on a skateboard snatched more than $550 from a Girl Scout troop Sunday as he rolled by their cookie stand at a San Bernardino County, Calif., grocery store.
After a full day of selling cookies outside of a Stater Brothers store in Phelan, the scouts began breaking down their selling stand, police said.
They were nearly done with the task when the teen, who had lingered near the girls' stand, reached out and grabbed their money bag, which contained $552, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Cpl. Randy Naquin said.

One of the girls ran after the thief, but fell down while running and sustained minor scrapes.
The Girl Scouts told sheriff's investigators that they do not know the boy who stole their money, Naquin said.
The boy (seen in surveillance video above) was described by Naquin as a white juvenile, wearing a blue beanie and blue-and-grey striped shirt.
However, Stater Brothers shared surveillance footage with the Sheriff’s Department, which is working to determine whether the video is good enough quality to assist in identifying him, Naquin said.
“Phelan is a very small community, and pretty much everybody knows each other,” said Naquin, who said a clear photo of the suspect will help officers identify and arrest the culprit.

The juvenile delinquent in the video saw an opportunity and he took it. I doubt he was intending to target the girl scouts that day.

proceeds go to events and trips for girlscouts. also some portion of it sometimes go to buy prizes, which in turn are raffled off to generate more money for the girlscouts org.

Girl Scout rules say that they are not allowed to go door to door anymore due to safety of the girls. They can only set up sales tables like that, or take orders from family. When my kids were told this, I volunteered to go with them, as I am of an intimidating size and look like a ticked off biker. They still said that it was not allowed.
In our area, they can go door to door if an adult is with them and they are cautioned to only go to houses of people they know. It is a very different world from when I sold them for 50 cents a box and pulled my wagon all over the neighborhood! Now I help my grand daughter sell at the booths!
Actually, some councils still allow door-to-door sales but the require adult supervision and they recommend that you only do it in your neighborhood. In some areas, it's no problem but there are some places where you wouldn't want your kids knocking on any of the doors.

I bought some cookies from the Girl Scouts out in front of my market yesterday, and I asked about that. The girls and the moms sed they still do that in their own 'hoods. When that's done, they sell the rest in front of stores. I was surprised~~ didn't think they went door2door anymore either!

Stolen money? Are you on crack? After paying for the cost of the cookies, a percentage goes to the council for programming and a percentage goes to the individual troops. Girls use money earned to take educational trips, go to summer camp and various other things. Don't talk about what you don't know about. Besides, no one is forcing you to buy the cookies.

These people just have nothing better to say, both of my Daughter's were in the girl scouts and they worked hard to make that money standing out in all kinds of weather, I am from NY, I felt so bad about hearing the story that I emailed the editor so I could get in touch with the Girl scout Troop so I donate the money that was stolen, I do hope they catch this person, He deserves to be punished...
Many cases of GS cookies are sent each year to the other kinds of troops, the kind that are defending our freedom overseas. The US troops get the cookies, the GS troops get to continue. Win, win. So much better using funds from cookie sales than having to ask parents for money on a continuing basis, and the girls have more control over their own troop's activities. From a former troop leader and former neighborhood cookie sale manager (managed cookie sales for 40 troops for five years).
My daughters were Girl Scouts, too. They will graduate college in four years (one this spring), already have jobs in their fields of study, and they will have no loan debt. They absolutely learned their money management skills from the cookie sales.
It doesn't matter if you don't like the cookies or think the price is too high or not enough money goes directly to the girlscouts. This is about some little scumbag taking money that does not belong to him. Taking it from children selling cookies for scouts.......Where I come from this would adequetely and justly be resolved.....NO COPS or COURTS ARE NEEDED!

Nanna83, we don't have a "street kids" problem here. The kids here do not sleep on the street like "street kids" do. What we do have are parents that let their kids hang-out at the local shopping center and strip malls instead of making them get jobs, ensuring their homework is finished and such. If this works for somebody, then that's their issue, but as for me it doesn't work in "my world". I've been working since I was 13 (construction clean-up, irrigation, household chores, a friends bird farm and more) and got my 1st "real job" was I was about 16. It is annoying to go to the stores and see them around, but I've tolerated it because they keep to themselves mostly and don't cause trouble other than the language they use. We have a very small community here, so trust me he's going to be caught. My guess is that he's been caught already.....

Happened twice in the last 2 days once to GirlScouts and the second time to Daisies here in Tucson. Absolutely terrible. Though several good samaritans have come forward to reaffirm my belief in mankind.

Small town, video footage, I'm sure he's as good as caught. Let this be a lesson to all table top sellers - secure your money, because no matter how safe you think the area is, no area is safe from the low and the stupid, and the latter may be you.
We use nail aprons, tied around the waists of the adult helpers. That way, no money is ever left lying on a table while you are helping someone else. Has worked for us for the last 5 years. Learned the trick years ago when working craft shows and someone else's money box got picked up.
An adult should have made cash pick-ups during the day - but , still, there is no excuse for this. Community service in some area where he is visible to the entire town - like trash pickup, while wearing an orange jail jumpsuit would be appropriate.
