The Mcmillian Campaign / Reuters
Marco McMillian, 34, a candidate for mayor of the Mississippi Delta city of Clarksdale, is shown in this undated campaign photograph released to Reuters on February 27, 2013. McMillan, considered to be among Mississippi's first viable political candidates and who was openly gay, was found dead on Wednesday morning, officials said, the victim of an apparent homicide.
JACKSON, Mississippi - A gay, black mayoral candidate killed last week in Mississippi was beaten, dragged and set on fire before his body was dumped near a river, according to his family.
In a statement issued late on Sunday, the family of Marco McMillian said a coroner who performed an autopsy on his body told them about the gruesome manner of death.
"We feel this was not a random act of violence based on the condition of the body when it was found," said the McMillian family. "Marco, nor anyone, should have their lives end in this manner."
But the Coahoma County Sheriff's Department, which is leading the investigation, has released few details about the killing or a possible motive. Law enforcement officials say the killing is not being treated as a hate crime.
Coahoma County Coroner Scotty Meredith declined to comment on the family's statement that McMillian was beaten and burned.
The body of McMillian, a 33-year-old candidate for mayor of Clarksdale, Mississippi, was found on Wednesday. A day later, law enforcement officials arrested a 22-year-old man, Lawrence Reed, who is also black, and charged him with murder in connection with the case.
McMillian was one of the first viable openly gay candidates to run for office in Mississippi, according to the Victory Fund, a national organization that supports homosexual candidates.
Autopsy results are not expected to be released until toxicology tests are complete, which could take two or three weeks, Meredith said.
McMillian had been missing since February 25 when his sport-utility vehicle was involved in a head-on collision in a rural part of Coahoma County in the Mississippi Delta. McMillian was not in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
McMillian recently moved from Memphis back to his hometown of Clarksdale to run for mayor as a Democrat. He had faced state Representative Chuck Espy, a Democrat, and former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill Luckett, an attorney, along with two other candidates.
McMillian's campaign focused on reducing crime and unemployment in Clarksdale, a city of roughly 18,000 people, said campaign spokesman Jarod Keith.
A once-booming agricultural community, the city has steadily bled residents and jobs over the years and now faces high levels of violence and unemployment.
Another Democratic candidate for mayor, Doris Haynes Miller, said she recently was robbed at gunpoint in the town.

"Law enforcement officials say the killing is not being treated as a hate crime."
If this isn't hate then what is?
This has all the hallmarks of a HATE CRIME !
I'd start looking at the police dept first.
.
Because it was a black man who dragged another black man and than burned him and dumped him in a river.
Didn't you ever get the Liberal Talking Points Memo saying that only white people are capable of racism...
Huh? You do realize he was gay right? Unless you're trying to say that hating someone because they are gay isn't really a hate crime are you?
Tangeant2: Ever heard of Mathew Sheppard, bud? Hate crimes aren't always about race.
Its like I tell some of my white friends, if you yourself are not racist then CALM THE FUKK DOWN about someone calling you a racist (which no one here has done, tangeant); obviously no one is talking about you so get over yourself.
This sort of activity is only perpetuated by societal constraints on how people should behave and how they should live. Until the hate and stigma is gone, these activities will continue. I can only pray that one day we will all get on the same page and allow gays to live life in peace but sadly I don't know how that will be fully actualized in my lifetime. My prayers for the victim and his family. He has a place in heaven i am sure.
The fact that the police aren't treating it as a hate crime suggests to me that they know something they're not telling us about the motive. The alleged killer is black, so it's obviously not a racist crime. If the alleged killer is gay (and we don't know, one way or the other), that would rule out the victim's orientation as the motive. Or if the killer was just pulling off a carjacking, and got angry and violent because McMillian resisted, or if McMillian was killed for political reasons, that would also take this homicide out of "hate crime" territory. Lots of possibilities.
early, you need an education on sexuality, it could still be the crux of the matter if the killer was gay. And a hate crime can still be based in sexuality for those who do not know!
@tangeant2 - it is not racism, it's likely anti-gay sentiment. We don't know at this point - too early to judge without knowing more. Maybe the cops are hesitant to ask the district attorney to charge a hate crime, since it is black on black and they're not sure the anti-gay angle will work. An awful, horrible thing to do to another human being.
If the killer was gay, it's a little difficult to maintain that the victim was targeted because the killer hated gays. Is self-loathing a hate crime?
early, hatred of other gays due to self-stigmatization still falls under the definition. It's an ugly place to be, but self-reflexivity is a bitch...
There is certainly a lot of emotion involved on the killer's part. I'm thinking they knew each other. It sounds like he wanted McMillian to suffer a very painful death. Maybe the killer was an ex-lover with an axe to grind.
Another motive could be that McMillian may have sexually assaulted the killer years before. I'm not saying that being gay makes someone an automatic sex predator. Just that he could be.
We won't really know the truth until it comes out I guess.
Hate crime or not, this man was brutally murdered. Electing President Obama has opened a raw festering wound this country would rather not address: racism is alive and well in the USA. Just look at the posts you will find on MSNBC, racism is rampant and keeping cover under a political blanket.
Remember, this happened in Mississsippi. Things are and have always been different in the south. Just keeping it real folks.
"We feel this was not a random act of violence based on the condition of the body when it was found,"
Really it doesn't get anymore personal beating, dragged and set on fire.
and he was a politician , black and was gay and HE doesn't qualify for a hate crime ! that statement is a hate crime in its self !
And I think to myself...what a wonderful world.
My this man rest in peace.
If this man was not a self declared homosexual and a member of the negro race, would it had made the News? All lost of life is horrible, but why is this so important it made the national News?
Homer, he wasn't a junkie on the corner, he was a candidate for mayor for cripesake! He was beaten, dragged and burned! Doesn't get more shocking and disgusting than that. Shocking and disgusting make news. I'd rather watch an episode of "Too Cute" than watch the news, but I digress...most people tune in for the nightly murder and rape show instead. Go figure. :-/
McReal:
In what county does racism not exist? Races and people from different countries have fought for thousands of years. I may not agree with it, but it happens in each country around the World by all Races against all Races. Using the "Racism Card" is asinine.
You have one (1) too many 's' in Mississippi.
FamousAmos-3755959:
I am not trying to make an argument; I am just asking the question. I will await more information concerning this event. I send my prayers to his Family.
It sure looks like it was overkill. It could be many things. While I want to jump the gun and say it's a hate crime (gay ppl have plenty of haters), it could be many, many things. All we know is that he was killed violently and they have a black suspect. Were drugs or possible ex-lovers involved? Or maybe someone who is fed up with his position in politics? We have no shortage of people who hate our president and wouldn't mind taking it out on someone who represents a political party they blame for all the ills in the world.
It might be more complicated then we think.
Oh, my goodness. This wasn't a result of hate crime rather he was with the wrong people and he said something wrong (it was not about his homosexuality rather it was something he shouldn't do) ut not hate crime because it will lead to blaming religion (aka Christianity) and we have the same BS all over again.
All assault or murder is a hate crime. "Hate crime" is possibly the stupidest f***ing statement ever. All murder should be prosecuted the same. Only an idiot would say one murder is somehow worse than another.
Funny how everyone has jumped on the bandwagon when as it clearly states the family put this out. Let's wait for the official coroners report. It is truly sad, the loss of a life but let's not jump until facts are all out there and the case continues.
Just looking at this guy's picture breaks my heart. Just looks like the nicest and happiest guy. I can't imagine what kind of disgusting person could actually even stomach the thought of doing this to another person. To think about what happened to him tortures my brain, so I can't imagine what it must be like for someone who was a member of his family. So sorry for all of them!
@Troll harder
The woman was black and 7 weeks pregnant. She was beat up by the father of her 2 children, his mother and his sister. Not 12 A white women beaten by 12 black men. You Teabaggers just can never tell the truth. Yet you call you're self's Christians. You should be ashamed of you're self, but you're not. The beating up of anyone I don't condone but telling about it is just as bad.
Why are you so angry? You know you would not be so angry if you pulled all the hair out from you're teeth when you're done getting Teabagged, you might be happier or at least you could smile without being embarrassed about getting Teabagged.
a black gay man in mississippi is beaten, dragged, and then burned to death, and authorities are quick to say it wasn't a hate crime? riiiiiiiiiiight. all signs point toward hate crime. not really sure how they are so quick to scratch that off the list of possible motives.
Troll harder is a self-proclaimed troll. Don't feed the troll. Maybe it will go back under its bridge. Homer is also a troll.
As for this crime: I can't believe that anyone would suggest this WASN'T a hate crime. What the hell else do you people need? A handwritten and signed note from the killer? Beaten, dragged AND burned? How many random homicides are that drastic?
Isn't every crime a hate crime? The perpetrator hates the victim for what ever reason whether it's race, sexual preference, gender etc.,etc.,etc. It's all hate. To make a law that that says a certain crime is a hate crime demeans all the other (crimes). You don't need new laws defining hate it's all hate. Just enforce the laws already on the books.
@JB, it's not always hate. Sometimes crazy ppl do crazy @!$%# and it has nothing to do with hate. It could just as easily be a religious fanatic following the voices in his head that are telling him that he needs to "help" the gay people of the world by burning the gay out of them.
I am sure he would cry in sadness and religious joy as he hurt the guy too. Don't assume all crimes involving murder are hate. There are also crimes that involve loving someone so much you don't want to share them with anyone else, so you do what is "best" for them and murder them. Violently.
There are many, many other examples I can give you that aren't "hate". But you get the point.
The point is murder is murder no matter what drove the person to kill and all should be treated as such. 99.9% of those that claim insanity are just looking for a way out. Besides you'd have to mad to kill someone unless it was in self defense.
TrollHarder...First, I want to express my sympathy & prayers for Mr. McMillan's family & friends. As for your inflammatory comments, "TrollHarder", they demonstrate why so many people voice "lies" which they read on the internet as gospel truth. It's like the silly commercial where the girl has a date with a French model. I do give you credit for posting the URL for the true article. The incident was not a couple of weeks ago, it was 2-17-2012. It was not 12 black men & women, it was the father of her unborn child plus their 2 previous children, his mother & 2 of his cousins. It was wrong & evil. It is also evil to exaggerate the truth in these comments regarding such a heinous crime. It can only perpetuate continued injustice.
early, the recent case of one Amish faction cutting the beard of an amish man and the court deeming it a hate crime establishes that the victim and the perpetrator may seem to be from the same cloth but the perpetrator committed their crime based on hate. West Side Story is a hate crime. The perp doesn't need to fit a phenotype to develop a specific intent. Establishing intent determines to what degree a crime is assigned, and what level of "correction" will be required to administer justice.
WHY MUST THIS BE A HATE CRIME ? So many of you are actually getting pretty testy with anyone who suggests it is not a hate crime so why in your mind must this be a hate crime. Because he was black? Because he was gay? because he was a politition ?
The police are thinking this is a hate crime and until there is any information given to us we have no reason to think otherwise. This is much of our problem today. Everyone is getting over excited about everything. Little rational thinking by many.
GET A GRIP PEOPLE. If this were a hate crime at some point we may here that but right now we don't have a clue. Relax until you can make a sound opinion based on facts that are discovered.
Some of you need to read the article. First the suspect that was arrested was black. You can't have a hate crime of race with black on black. Also I see another possibility from my experience in law enforcement. The clue is that it isn't being treated as a hate crime and the act was very personal. Although I cannot say with certainty, it sounds like an old flame or disgruntled lover. This the victim and the suspect are both men and the victim was homosexual, then this is a real possibility. Further, the police give out very few facts as not to jeopardize the case while they are still gathering evidence and building a case. Some of you jumping on the racist thing need to read first. Those jumping on it was because he was gay need to wait for all the facts. Too often people on here assume facts not presented and low and behold liberal media bites it and it turns out not the story they tried to make it out to be. I did call it correct on the Susan Smith case when she said some Black guy kidnapped her kids. I saw the first report on news on TV the morning it happened. I said she was lying and she killed her kids. Several of the other officers thought I was wrong. I told them why I thought she did it and two days later, I was proven right. I might not be right on this case, but the clues indicate it is possible.
For those of you asking if this is really a hate crime, what exactly do you think being beaten, dragged and burned is? A love crime? Obviously, the person who did this to him didn't like him very much. And at the very least, it is an extremely brutal and savage crime. Forget the semantics of whether it is "technically" a hate crime or not. I'm all for giving out as much punishment as legally permissible to any psycho who would would do anything like that, and I question anyone who isn't. Why would anyone try to defend someone who did something so horrible? I don't understand it.
GodOfFate A hate crime is much different from a crime of passion or simply by someone who "hated " another. The ramifications are different and the punishments more severe. A hate crime is one done because of what someones race , religious beliefs and now sexual orientation are. The possibility of an ex lover as Al-524682 points out doing this would not be any different that a wife beating her husband to death or a husband his wife but would not be a hate crime by deffinition.
Was it a savage killing ? It surely sounds like it was . A hate crime? We will have to wait and see.You can question my all you like but to jump to conclusions as you are is wrong and only shows the state our country is in. PANIC
Dirty Rat #1.11, I think you you pretty much hit on it. For some reason most don't understand, gay on gay violence tends to go to extremes that make the Jodi Arius case seem tame. I worked at a West Marine store in Key West for awhile, and a few months after I quit, a co-worker, who was gay, very low key and got along with everyone, took a hammer to his room mate, sliced up the body, decapitated him, took the body down to the store and threw it in the dumpster after somehow getting through a locked gate, and then drove 150+ miles and threw the head out in the Everglades. It's almost as if, through rage, emotion or whatever, there is something that compels not just to murder, but to destroy or erase the victims existence. I don't think this particular incident is race or gay hate, just a relationship gone really bad with a lot of emotion and some panic involved.
It does not matter if the victim was male, female, black, white, gay or hetero......a crime was committed and a person was murdered.
Sad, very sad. Doesn't look like there were any guns involved. Too bad the gentleman didn't have one, he might still be alive today. I'll bet the murderer has a mental illness. But nobody is doing anything to address the idiotic festering practice of allowing seriously mentally ill individuals to be "mainstreamed". It wouldn't be PC to do that. Better to attack law abiding citizens constitutional rights. Right Liberals?
KingK...unless a person keeps a gun fully loaded, pointed and ready to shoot, there is not always going to be a chance to beat out the perp. Keeping a fully loaded gun that was ready to shoot has already proven to be stupid in the death of two 4-year old boys in the last few days...one black whose father was a drug dealer and the other was white whose father was a law enforcement officer. See, it happens to all races and class of people. No one class or race is immuned from stupidity when it comes to guns.
just a question.if this man was a straight white man would it have ever been called a hate crime? i somehow doubt it.i guess because everyone just loves straight white men.
Or at least a black man was arrested for it. On the other hand, how often is someone arrested, tried, and found not guilty?
One would hope that an actual trial would clarify some of this. Maybe the local police don't consider killing of gays to be a hate crime.
Actually, that was a Reagan idea. And how much more are you willing to pay in taxes for increased mental health care funding? I suspect nothing. So what's your solution, summary execution of the mentally ill?
You liberals can sure argue a case, so if it means that much to you to call it a hate crime then by all means call it a hate crime after all it was not a act of love or was it?don't get between a gay and his pacifier bad things could happen. my opinion is there is a message in the manner the murder was conducted, or possibly a warning to others Id be suspicious about it being a act of vengeance, possibly a warning to others about what not to do, I think he pissed off the wrong person, let the police do their job and they will let you know more latter its possible more arrest are in progress. now who is going to jump up and accuse the KKK? come on Libbie's you can do it, I have faith in you, you know the KKK is behind this you know the suspect is being framed to divert attention from the truth, you know that, you need to blame the white race its your responsibility to do so, don't they teach liberal concepts in school anymore? its always the white race never the others, all bad things can be blamed on the white race just work at it, twist the facts then twist some more, if you twist enough you can blame it on Bush.
I guess they loved the man that's why they killed him this way???? It had nothing to do with his race, color, or gender! It had to do with the fact he was human!
Maybe his politics, still hate!!
There is no bigotry in Mississippi. Just listen to the state claims in their argument to eliminate the Voting Rights Act. They treat all blacks the same way - but most don't get the publicity of this guy.
Just remember - in a state that is 80% black, and 94% of blacks supported Obama - this state was carried by Romney. If they don't discriminate - how did that happen?
This is not only a hate crime but a racist hate crime. It is disgusting and I hope they find the murderers. They should be locked up for life...at least.
I know how this happened, he got caught in the rope, than he got so hot he spontaneously combusted and while trying to put it out it just looks like they beat him to death, than they got frightened and ran away, honest mistake. Any defence attorneys want to pay me now!!
Fair statement Al. Other gays or Blacks may not have been at risk if it was a personal motivation. Dis-association can lead one Black to hate another. American history is rife with minority ethnic groups attempting to pass as something else. On another note, Civic leaders are often embarrassed and humiliated when huge crimes befall their communities, after all, they are charged with keeping the best foot forward at all times. It's not unusual for them to attempt to minimize an event in order to protect the communty's image.
Just because the person arrested was black doesn't mean he committed the crime alone, if at all.
Who paid him? Burning and dragging has to do with hatred.
Severed Head #1.43, That was not a Reagan idea. Do some research and you'll find who initiated it and why.
@ Avenger-2464988,
You know you are so right. We should stick up for the psycho who beat, dragged, and burned this poor man. Why add the hate crime sentence on this psycho when jumping to conclusions is unfair? I mean, it's only fair that we treat every psycho who drags, beats, and burns people with the utmost fairness! Otherwise that would be wrong. You know, wrong to add more punishment to the psycho who would beat, drag, and burn another person.
*end blatant sarcasm*
Sometimes people should actually think about what they say. First of all, I do realize what a hate crime is. And you are extremely naive if you think that a black, gay politician who was killed so savagely and violently isn't the victim of one. There are plenty of discriminatory reasons for a psycho like this to have done that to this poor man to have been a hate crime. And the over the top violence? Classic hate crime. Practically textbook hate crime scenario. Again, you are naive if you think otherwise.
And (again) even if it wasn't a hate crime (and it obviously is), would you really argue about the technicality of it if it meant taking away another thing they can charge this psycho with? Because that is what you and all the others arguing it isn't a hate crime are doing. The psycho who did this deserves no form of mercy. If you know he did it and is guilty, and you know you can add the hate crime sentence (or any other sentence) to his punishment, then you should do so. We are far too soft on crimes, and especially to some of the most brutal criminals like this. The last thing we need is for people like you to be playing lawyer for this scumbag from the comments section. Because by arguing about it not being a hate crime, that is what you are doing. You are effectively taking the side of the psycho. So yes, I do question you and anyone else with that point of view.
Some of the posts here are crazy. We have no information on motive, but so many are saying it was jilted lovers, a couple said he sexually assaulted him before, and all the garbage spewing forth that can be mustered. Wow. Why would anyone insult this man...the victim of a horrendous murder..with wild suppositions? No, you don't know unless you were there and watching or taking part. Unless you want to step forward and admit you saw it or helped the murderer, then how about you wait for facts before you say all kinds of wild accusations that are baseless? It just looks as if he was horrifically murdered, and there is no basis for making this VICTIM out to be anything but a victim at this time. Amazing.
ram-762581 post 1.54
With all due respect; I'm sure some people would say he was killed by space aliens too, people say lots of things. Lets face reality this was a hate crime plain and simple. The fires of hate and racism still burn hot in some parts of the south and that is reality.
I hope the person or people that committed this horrible crime are caught soon because anybody that would do something like this should not be allowed to live amongst decent human beings.
GodOfFate.... you make me laugh.... You really should get back on your meds before you hate yourself.
We are probably going to find out this is a lover killing. As someone pointed out gays when they get in lovers quarrels seem to go overboard in retaliation. Why. If you are old enough to recall. being gay use to be the first condition on the list of mental illnesses. You can do the research if you like to see how the gay community got it removed. This does sound like a violent killing but doesn't sound like a hate crime . You can have your opinion and when the final report comes out you can see you most lieklu are wrong.
@ Avenger-2464988,
I see you are still sticking up for the psycho. And really? A lover's killing? Didn't you just tell me that jumping to these conclusions is wrong? So not only are you a hypocrite, you have stepped over your own credibility. And you argue about it not being a hate crime. Lover's quarrel! Hah! I don't know where you clowns come up with this stuff.
As for being gay listed as a mental illness, that was due to the discriminatory policies we as a society had against them. That was entirely untrue and turned out to be nothing more than an excuse for bigotry against it. Social Darwinism was similar in that it used the guise of a legitimate scientific theory to justify racism. The very reason we have a hate crime category is because there are sick people who will use various forms of bigotry to go even further and use it as a motive to kill these people. And often, those crimes are extremely savage and violent. You know, like this crime.
And for the third time, I find it disturbing that you would argue to reduce the sentence of a psycho who would do this. Now, this is almost certainly a hate crime. But let's say for argument sake it turns out I'm wrong and it isn't. This psycho beat, dragged, and burned the victim. Why wouldn't you want to punish them for as many things as legally permissible? If he isn't charged with a hate crime, that is one less thing the legal system can punish that sick b**stard with. And by arguing that it isn't a hate crime, you are playing lawyer for the psycho by arguing to reduce his sentence.
Intent may have been to make it look like a Hate crime, mirroring the one that occured in Texas, in order to throw suspicion away from the perpetrator.
GodOfFate......lolololololololololol
interested observer-Mississippi is not 80% black. It's more like 40%. Where are you getting your info from?
Avenger,
If you find it funny that you are arguing to reduce the psycho's sentence than you should be locked up.
It's not a hate crime until ALL black people are cleared. Though there is a lot of anti-gay hate in the black community, still only whites can commit hate crimes, right?
Not hate? Maybe the WHITE POLICE should lose a loved one in this manner. This is unbelievable.
Good fk'n lawd...are you for real. They're black you moron.. http://www.coahomacountysheriff.com/
BW, it could still be a sexuality based hate crime. Lawd knows the black population has the biggest stigma on that subject.
I understand that, but obviously Optocyst needs to blame someone white.
I hate to upset you but, if you would have done some simple research, you would have discovered that the Sheriff of Coahoma County is BLACK not WHITE. So please keep your RACIST comments to yourself. What you said is unbelievable.
larry please point out who you were directing that to, and what I stated is entirely true if you were aiming at me.
Pat, it was obviously to Optocyst.. quit being a drama queen bud.
It's still generally good forum etiquette, especially when more than half the time people can't write well in implicit subjecting.
Didn't I make it eloquently clear to not be a drama queen?
As Chief Justice Roberts noted recently, in great contrast to Massachusetts, Mississippi has more registered black voters than white voters, really . . .
Really! :-o
SC justices have lost contact with reality. I have lived the same rural community for most of my 64 years. I taught and was principal at the local school for over 30 years. There were 2 minorty students in all of those years. They were foster children. I grew up around racism. Almost everone one I know used the 'N' word and told raciest jokes. I lost friends when I called them out for the emails they sent about President Obama.I had an aunt that lived t obe 101 and was one of the sweetest people ever to be on this Earth. She would take in a total stranger and feed them, give them money anything she had. She used the "N" word. Most of these peole never even met a black person. If you are not a born again christian white ,straight , and republican you may be treated all right to your face by the people that live here but not behind you back .Odd thing is they don't see themselves as raciest. My point is that there are 100's of other communities in the South just like this one. Racism is deep and has lasted for many many years. If the SC justices think that it dosen't and we as a nation no longer need laws like the voter rights law then they are blind.
@okjohnsmuth; I so agree with your post. I think the recent political climate has just allowed for those old ugly predjudices to really come to the surface. Because of so many people getting away with disrespecting our president just because he is black, it has given license to all those old jokes and derogatory names coming out into the open. I, too, grew up with my parents and grandparents using the "N" word, but they also had a word for people of Mexican descent, Asians, Jewish people....it wasn't pretty. It would actually turn my stomach when they would talk that way because I went to school in California in the 60's and 70's and had a lot of different friends, ethnicity-wise.
As far as the people who still live in the South, it seems that many Southerners still hold that the South should have never been messed with and they blame a lot of black people for their own problems. Of course, what makes it even worse is that so many have moved from the South to other parts of the country...so now there is racism everywhere. And, not only is racism everywhere, but homophobia continues, as well.
I think it has been so disheartening to see what has happened just in the last four years. I really thought we had come a long way. All men are created equal in every way and God loves everyone, right? Also, supposedly God makes no mistakes...therefore, color or sexual orientation should make no difference. More than ever now we need to make sure that we don't retreat into the real barbarians that we used to be and head into the future, all as equals.
Of course, what makes it even worse is that so many have moved from the South to other parts of the country...so now there is racism everywhere. And, not only is racism everywhere, but homophobia continues, as well.
That is the dumbest thing i have ever seen on my computer screen. you need a very good educational lesson are you from the south?
@notasheep; I don't disrespect the president because he is Black I have a hundred valid reasons to disrespect the man in the office and none of them have anything to do with his skin color, his inability to do the job is right up their with why is he always on vacation, where is he today, dysfunctional government, run by a amateur, the list goes on. one of the biggest is I don't like his Marxist mentors and Socialist ways. I'm a senior that means that I was raised to be against these things, the young are raised to look forward to these things, he is just another liberal that will blame everyone else for what he screws up, he will do his best to lead the country the direction the liberal socialist want it to go, I know that is the wrong direction for a prosperous future for the young Americans, he will destroy the future. but socialist/liberals refuse to see it. I'm lucky I won't be around to see it, but for some reason I care. America is changing and for the worst, it is being swallowed up by the rest of the world and we are not just letting it happen some people are helping it happen! good luck, that's what PC is all about. people say they are making it better, (not that I can see) its just getting more and more screwed up. and give Team Obama a little more time it will be irreversible, Washington is full of Marxist and the Marxist are telling you no its not, time will prove it. haven't you noticed our government is having its own private little cold war and the people will be the losers. the Man on the Unicorn is not your friend.
@youareasheep; there you go again with the homophobia PC BS the truth is I am not afraid of becoming a gay person by being exposed to them, the fact is they make me want to throw up! and I don't want to go through life feeling like I'm about to Ralf on someone, they should simply keep their perversion to them selves then there is no problem. if I was so disgusting that I made people feel ill I would not flaunt it in their face. its been considered degradation for millenniums now all of a sudden its not BS. live and let live is a two way street and you want to turn it into a one way single lane parkway. where is my right to not have to face sickening things every day. cant help it I go into a restaurant and see two guys making out I'm apt to puke all over the place, start a little chain reaction. homophobia is a word made up by queers to insult straight people and pin a label on them, other than that its meaningless, the word is empty and ill conceived, nice try though. its all the drugs you kids took in the 60's that have your thinking all screwed up we knew then that dead braincells could not assist in ones ability to reason. did you know that pot makes people passive and subservient, it allows a person to be processed mentally it can rob you of your individuality its no wonder the liberals want it legal. Homophobia is as tasteful and as politically correct and more voided of real meaning then the use of the term Queer, at least the term Queer stands for something other then a possible mental condition. in short I don't like your word and it does not show proper representation to a person simply because that person does not think like you and dis agrees with you on the issues, if everything was only so shallow and simple.
Where were the conservatives' complaints when G.W. Bush took all of his vacations? He still holds the record for most vacation days while in office.
Again, that's crap about Bush. Most of his vacations were working vacations at his ranch in Texas, where he PAID to kill a steer and give foreign diplomats a taste of a real working Western ranch, which thrilled them. He also put up the Secret Service and fed them.
Not like Obama, who goes on luxurious vacations with no work component. Not to mention Mooooshelle, who considers herself a queen and her daughters princesses.
If this mans was murdered the way his family stated then the guy they arrested,if convicted, should receive the death penalty. This may not be a hate crime if his death was caused due to a carjacking and a robbery. The news hasn't stated why the suspect arrested knew the victim or if it was a random act. We'll have to wait and see as the story is updated. My condolences to his family. It disgusts me that a productive member of society who wanted a safer and better community was murdered.
In total agreement with "Just a cleaning lady", such a sad way for anyone to meet their demise... hoping that the murderer is caught/justice is served!
What he'd do? Piss off the other fags?
Maybe he has his wrists fused
Where's bwaldo? Chasing down a red herring, evidently.
Nice, bwaldo... way to add to an intelligent discussion... NOT... you're a trolling idiot.
what did John P Holdren do as the (ScienceCzar),,,,?
We are in the end of days. The world is steeped in evil and wickedness. The wrath of God is coming. And it's coming to a town near you.
If I have a bike will it save me.
Yes, Mike, things are so much worse now than they were in the good old days. Remind me again, when were those "good old days," when everyone sat around together singing Kumbaya?
This is the problem these "end of days" folks face. Human history is a long, sorry litany of wars, crime, disease, poverty, ignorance, intolerance, and people generally mistreating other people. If anything, things have never been better than they are today. Anyone who tells you otherwise is completely ignorant of history.
I have good old days to remember and compare the times with, what do you have books and the word of a liberal teacher? times were better in the recent past and all the bad things you blamed happening in the past are happening with more frequency today, so things haven't really changed have they, they are getting worse again and will continue to till man self destructs don't fool yourself and don't let them offer you anymore kool aid. about every 50 years someone comes along in the world to cast it into kayos, give it time and sh!t will hit the fan again and possibly for the last time. so get off the kool aid, don't sit in front of the fan, 60 years ago we had a life I don't know how to rate this s#it you call better.
And the dinosaur roared it's last breath................
I can just hear Al and Jesse going...Damn!!
lmao...
a robbery is not a hate crime. but it is hateful. and people who hate gays are ignorant.
@mike - did you read the article? The man was dragged and burned - that is hate.
Maggie -
You don't know that. Disposing of a body - looks like a large fellow, dead weight is hard to handle. Burning in order to conceal evidence and identity is fairly common criminal behavior.
Brutality, blatant disregard for the dignity of a corpse, a complete lack of morals do not a hate crime make.
If it was a professional hit to make a point then how could you call it a hate crime. its a crime no doubt but till recently hate crimes did not get labeled as such it was labeled as a heinous crime and that was that, screw the term hate crime its BS, just there to work people up to a frenzy and sell news, it works for pissing people off and starting riots to sell even more news and thin the herd, its a bad term designed for the kool aid generation. if its PC its wrong.
Unbelievable!
Where are all the racist and homophobic christian's to say this man deserved it? Either way, this world disgusts me, and it's mostly due to the part of religion. Nothing good has ever come from it. Can guarantee this was an ethnic/homophobic cleansing. A gay black man in Mississippi? That just has all the makings of a hate crime setup.
I am a Christian, and do NOT hate anybody.
I figure what they do in their lifetime is their problem.
So blow me moron, if anything, you seem to have the "holier than thou"
attitude. Sounds like you already solved the crime.
And I might add, proclaiming all religion as bad is a religion.
Think hard on that and get back to me.
sickofpeople
If you actually are a christian that doesn't hate you are the minority in a religion that breeds just as much hate as Muslims.
Religion has done nothing but hold mankind back in the last couple hundred years. It had it's purpose in the dark ages, a couple thousand years ago but mankind is smarter than that now. Mankind doesn't need voodoo for order in society anymore.
I find it funny and ironic that a christian has a screen name titled "sickofpeople"
Like Be Accountable said, Christians breed as much hate as a muslim. Christians kill in the name of their God, and Muslims kill in the name of their God. Hell, we already have 2 God's right here dividing us. Apparently there isn't just one God still. I mean hey...the bible tells me it's ok to kill someone if they work on sunday, not to be around women when they're on the rag, women are not allowed to educate anyone in the presence of men. God commanded armies to pillage towns and rape the women. And don't even give me the "oh that's the old testament" because the bible is the bible is the bible is the bible...is it not? Isn't the bible the word of God? Sounds like a great guy. Hey, he also kills newborn babies. But nooooo, religion could never do anything wrong. Moron.
But either way, you sound like the typical christian who can't handle the truth, so he retorts to comments like "blow me moron" "I don't hate anyone"...hypocrite. You can't hate, but you can tell another man to suck your d!ck. Isn't that a sin in your religion? Homo. (btw, I love the gays, my best friend is one, don't you love sarcasm and facetious people?) Get back to me, hypocrite.
Spoken like a true christianist.
Yes, just like all the sweet Christian children that bullied my children right out of public school. My daughter actually had the nerve to say that she supported a Democrat and the "hellfire" rained down on her.
Like Tecky pointed out there are a lot of things that the Bible says is wrong, but Christians seem to pick and choose what works for them. They never have any problem pointing out that the non-Christian is the one in the wrong and the one who will never go to Heaven. Then there is the Mormons who believe even the Christians aren't going to be allowed into Heaven. All these "religious" people seem to feel like their religion is the best and they themselves are the best.
This is a good example of why people hate christians.
I hope each of you will re-read your posts and replace the word "Christian/christian" with black, homosexual, or atheist. Bigotry is ugly in all of its manifestations.
sickofpeople - "so blow me morons?" Really? You are as bad as the others.
Atheism is forming into a religion, as people connect on the subject it will become a organized religion, then they the Atheist can justify going around killing people that do not believe as they do its what people do, its what you were breed for. I'm surprised you folks haven't figured that out yet. herd up for the attack, its human nature whenever there are two opinions you have controversy and over time two groups will form to argue the theories or opinions out till a time when man will feel the need to put a end to the wrong thinkers. Our political machine has divided the nation, this has happened before do you remember the results, it has happened all over the world do you remember your history? Atheism as a religion (Cult) that apprehends non conformist and persecutes them is just around the corner. its just human nature! if there is a Christ then their is a anti Christ, where there is a common there is a neutral a positive to a negative one can't exist without the other, wont be long and Atheist will be making a stand. perhaps the rise of a Gay Caligula to feed Christians to the lions is just around the corner.
D Buck, you are so confused and ill-informed about so many things that it is useless to supply any facts, but I am sorry you are so full of bitterness and misery.
It's truly incredible how much christianists hate Atheists and anyone else who does not believe in their superstition. Christianism is a religion that is obviously based upon hate as exemplified by its followers who post here.
The christianists are getting a taste of their own medicine. They deserve it, not only to teach them a lesson but because all the negative things being said about them are true.
Absolutely terrible in this day and age that something like this would happen !!! How much hatred could you have for someone , to murder them at all , let alone in this manner ..... the "animal(s) responsible for this are not deserving of the description of "humans" and should be executed in the same fashion !!
How is this NOT a hate crime!?!?! The injuries and condition the victim sustained and was found in screams hate crime. Absolutely ridiculous.
Maybe it was a love crime, you know, the angry ex maybe? Or maybe this is ordinary treatment in Mississippi for black gay people. It doesn't matter what they call it. Don't worry about it so much.
Disavowed...I don't believe anyone needs your approval to be upset about a man being brutally murdered. Why did you need to say that? If you don't care fine, but others do.
Why must EVERYTHING be a hate crime just because someone is of one ethincity, gender or sexual preference? Do you think it actually possible this was just a plain old crime......human on human? When you label every single crime one of hate you denigrate the horror of real hate crimes. Actually, violent crime in and of itself is ugly enough without giving it a label. Enough already!!!!!
fly, burning someone alive is a pretty bold and personal statement...or did you miss that part of the reading?
Dragging someone behind your truck and burning the body is a hint that it might be a hate crime.
skrekk...who said anything about dragging?
Patrick, Burning him could have been personal, but not necessarily a hate crime. Perhaps he had a lover that no one knew about. Or perhaps it was someone he rejected.
Or perhaps it was was simply someone trying to hid the evidence of his crime.
Crimes aren't always about "Hate" as in directed at anyone in particular, black, white, gay, whatever.
Perhaps you should read the very first sentence of the story?
If Obama had another brother he would be like Marco McMillian. Truth is that regardless of a persons race or gender preference, this is no way to be treated. My condolences to the family.
This is disgusting...it doesn't matter what the motive or what your political convictions are, people doing this to other people is not okay. That's pretty much the bottom line isn't it? One human being suffered something unimaginably horrible; nothing justifiable or humorous about it.
Mind. Check out any large city, Chicago, NY, LA, Boston, and you will see the same thing happening, daily.
It's BEEN disgusting for a long time.
Id like to know what he did to piss someone off so bad that they would step down to such a subhuman evil demonic action. talk about riding with the devil, that's as bad as blocking traffic in South Africa, thats almost as bad as getting into arguments with your boyfriend and not hiding your perfume, there is a new trend going around in colored communities where if you get under someones nerves you will be tourched drug or both. has any one ever seen Obama get pissed off? I don't care what anyone says that is noway to treat anyone. is this the return of Shaka Zulu or Idi Amin, next we will be seeing people impailed or have there bodies surgically rearanged.
Well, condolences to the family. That's a pretty horrible way to go out, I don't care if he was a politician in training.
Yes, investimigate the hell out of that "police department".
I agree with NStiz........if this is not a hate crime, then what is? Mississippi should be ashamed for their response to this killing.
This has HATE ..beaten, dragged and burned all over it! Let's all remember we are talking about MISSISSIPPI. So sad. Terribly sad and sorry for the people that loved this human being!!!
Let's all remember we are talking about MISSISSIPPI
Right, because we all know nothing sick or twisted ever happens in California or New York or Illinois, does it?
Billy, only in the republican areas of those states or in the economically disparate areas of those states.
Yes of course,,and there is no Black on Black crime in Mississippi. And there are no blacks who hate gays in Mississippi.
Only White people do that.
Do all the proponents here of the hate crime theory know all the facts of the case, or just assuming that because the guy is gay it had to be the reason he was killed? It might well be. But it might be that the alleged killer was a jilted lover. or the guy was slap assed crazy. Why don't we wait and find out?
billy, the body was burned alive... crazy is about the only other possibility and that doesn't happen legitimately often enough to sway my opinion.
Nobody said burned (alive)
Kinda casts a shadow over "flaming gay'" doesn't it?
Billy, the Hate crime Proponents KNOW this was a hate crime.
The man was black right?
The man was gay right?
One way or another then it HAD to be a hate crime.
I'm certain, that even if it's determined it wasn't. Let's say a former lover killed him in an argument. The hate crime proponents will be claiming police incompetence because the Lover who killed him was White or a white Latino (I love that term), or something else to PROVE it was a hate crime.
This was a human being Catch these guys and do the same to them....
Homo fuc...g Pric..s Put the killers in with a bunch of Black gay inmates and watch the fur fly...
@pulltab599 - did you read the article? They did catch the guy - he is a 22 yo black man. They got him very shortly after the incident. The discussion about what the charge will be.
FloridaMaggie - Sorry I do not believe they have the right person - but maybe a 22 year old man who found the SUV and drove it away
What they did to this man took more than one person - to shackle him - drag him - burn him - took maybe three or four people
The police are taking the easy way out - blame the car thief and let the KKK go! Small town - they know who did this!
Barbara, the police chief is black. I doubt he'd pass up a chance to keep a klansman in jail.
I am with you on this Barbara Adams Jackson, this all seems so familiar to the old KKK and we all know they are still alive and kicking. The Southern Poverty Law Center still keeps track of them and they got smaller for a while, but after President Obama got into office the racist idiots have been coming out of the woodwork and making plans to take back America from the "colored-folk". I am sorry to put it that way, but it is more than hatred against black people, we know how much they hate Mexicans, as well. (What is ridiculous is that much of America was inhabited by Mexicans before the White people ever made it West.) With all the ridiculous anti-immigration bills that have been passed and voter registrictions, etc. you have just seen an organized attempt to put anyone down that is not of White descent. It is an abomination. If we all look back into our family histories we will find that we are all a mix of all kinds of nationalities and colors. I am truly ashamed of how so many people have come to believe it is okay to make jokes, send emails, etc. about our wonderful, intelligent president.
God gave us all such a beautiful world to live in and we humans are the ones who make it ugly!
My husband and I agree with you. It is KKK allright. "Mississippi burning" more like it. The very idea of arresting one black man as the culprit says the police are involved, or know who is. We lived in GA for over a year and we are older white Obama supporters. People in the South have their little 6th graders run out and re-enact the civil war battles after church-with muskets-on the church grounds. It is really odd how they love that war, time or culture.... Someone at work called my husband " a damn yankee". I have seen hateful racism in the north, but what I don't see on the backroads up north like I do down south is angry thin young white men driving small pickups with confederate flags over the windows. I see confederate flags in windows of homes when I drive thru the back hills down south. I find that flag very offensive. I grew up in Iowa. We see and heard people gasp when I introduced my youngest son by his first name. It is the opposite of "Lee". I saw the "don't re-nig" bumper stickers up noth too, but I thought I was in the movie "deliverance" in some back roads down south--very scary. Someone told us they always carry a rolled up confederate flag while out hiking in the hills-for protection. Ignorance and hate=evil walks.
So when they found his body-Was there a "I was murdered because I am a Pro-Gay activist"? Come onnnn MSN, there could have been a number of reasons why he was murdered. My grandfather was in politics and he was always threatened no matter what his opinions were.
the body was burned alive...hello that's massively personal.
Patrick the troll...nobody said burned (alive)
Although members of the same race can be bigots toward one another for various reasons, "hate" crimes are rarely just about racism. It seems obvious that the family are saying the crime was motivated by his sexual orientation, and that the police department is brushing it off because their suspect is of the same race.
Thank God it wasn't a white guy that did it. We'd have LA riots all over again in Mississippi.
You can relax Al and Jesse. This is not the crime you are looking for.
maybe that's what is needed to start correcting things
This is FUBAR !
You have no comprehension of the meaning of that term, do you?
Something tells me hate is involved in most murders, especially ones that are so gruesome. I'm not sure why so many people are so worried about the semantics here. Horrible crime... a seemingly really positive person wanting to make a difference in his community horribly murdered. Shall we all just take a moment to offer condolences and support to friends and family and mourn the loss?
Yes, condolences and support; there. Now lets get down to business, taking out these sick individuals from our communities. Somewhere this perpetrator has friends and associates, who knew of his sickness, hatred and ignorance; they said nothing and in my opinion bare some responsibility in the crime.
Not true. People kill others for all sorts of "rational and well thought out" reasons that have nothing to do with hate, greed, fear, conquest and power, perverted gratification. Hate is a unique motive in and of itself that has the added hazard of being catalytic, spreading among others as a justifiable cause to kill.
Definitely a hate crime. The person(s) who killed him should receive the death penalty.
