College freshman dies after backflip gone wrong

An 18-year-old Baylor University freshman died Sunday after a bizarre accident while doing a backflip, the school said in a statement.

Kevin Signo, a pre-biology student from Frisco, Texas, was rehearsing traditional dances with the Filipino Students Association when he practiced a backflip and landed on his head, according to NBC station KCEN-TV in Waco.

The Waco Tribune-Herald quoted a justice of the peace as saying Signo hit his forehead and suffered a fatal spinal injury.

His parents, Henry and Jackie Signo, said their son was an introvert in high school but thrived at Baylor.

"Kevin was a very bright, well-liked and involved student on our campus," Baylor spokeswoman Lori Fogleman told Tribune-Herald. "He had so many friends here who will miss him terribly."

Signo's parents said their son wanted to be a doctor. He was an organ donor who had a legal document drawn up, donating his eyes, skin, bones and organs.

"He knew exactly what could be used for and what was important," Jackie Signo said.

Henry Signo said he thinks his son "knew that he would be helping others if something tragic had happened."

"We're very happy to have had him for a short time," he said.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Turrentine, Jackson & Morrow Funeral Home in Allen. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, the university said in a news release.

At least two busloads of students from Baylor are expected to make the trip to Allen for the services.

Kevin Signo attended Frisco High School and was originally from Carol Stream, Ill., according to his Facebook page.

His parents said they plan to endow a scholarship in his name at Baylor.

NBC 5's Randy McIlwain contributed to this report.

Yeah, I never worried about the one with my name on it. I did, however, take precautions for those coming across addressed "To Whom It May Concern."

Gmornin' bill...

What a tragedy. I'm wondering how this could have happened when he was so well trained. Sounds as if someone may have walked into his path as he was in motion and he may have clipped them which landed him on his head.

My daughter is in Gymnastics and I seen this happen before but luckily, nobody was hurt. Very scary though.

RIP Kevin...

Applying 100 pounds of impact pressure to the neck in the wrong place can snap that spinal column. Maybe a 1 in 10 chance but who wants to take it?

Humans are the only animal that take risks to their life for fun.

sad story, bad ending, I'm truly sorry for the family. I can't put any reason to it.

Lol! My son DOES play soccer and he broke his wrist last year when a his teammate accidently landed on him while my son was trying to make a goal! Freak thing! Still - I thank the stars that soccer and baseball are the only sports he plays! After reading this horrible story, I consider myself blessed.

Are you sure you never died?! :-)

There are people who fell 5 stories and lived and there are people who fell off a 6 foot ladder and died.

It's not how you fall, it's how you land...

The Original Mac, (below)...

I don't think so... There are many other sports out there that kill people and they'll continue to thrive...

Right, because there's no way it could have just been an error in judgment on his part. It has to have been someone else's fault. Wow, conspiracy theorists are taking over.

"I'm wondering how this could have happened when he was so well trained."

Why do you think he was well trained??? Did you watch the video report? The parents said they had never seen him do a back flip in his life. This was something new to him that he was practicing during a break in the dance rehearsal.

Sad story. May he rest in peace. It sounds like he touched many lives. And his spirit will go on in all of those who will benefit from his generous gift of life by his becoming a donor.

I guess there will be some program called "When Dancing Kills".

Adding back flips is not a form of dancing imo, it's gymnastics, and it's idiotic to add them to dance routines.

Why kids like to do this is weird to me, but RIP kiddo, I'm glad you had a good time in your short lived life doing back flips that made you happy and took you to your grave.

In college, unless you are in a dance class, stick to the books and get an education. Dancing is a limited field for those that think they will take it somewhere as a career.

Condolences to the family, friends, and those that loved this kid, and I hope they don't do some dumbazz dance routine at the funeral with back flips in it.

Creek dog--your "someone may have walked in his path..."

Is it NEVER possible that someone dies and it is just an ACCIDENT?
No one's fault?

See, if I slip and fall on my steps, I don't blame the Carpet maker, or the carpenters who built the house, or the person who soled my shoes.

I was SO impressed at the attitude of his parents, and their graciousness, and acceptance of the tragedy while making the best of a horribly sad situation (organ donation--WHICH BTW--no matter HOW many consent forms you sign, your family can still stop! They become 'owners' of your body when you die, and can over ride your wishes!)

It just really bothers me in our litiguous society that EVERY time something bad happens, the IMMEDIATE reaction is to blame someone ELSE.

ACCIDENTS happen.

Rest in Peace, Kevin.

Wow, I guess people are born knowing how to do all things they are meant to do in life. Forget the learning process. If you can't do backflips out of the womb, then stay away. Some people should get an education - one that goes beyond the narrow-sightedness of a book. College is for students to explore life interests and their interests while they are learning from books. Oh, I know, ban everything in college that is outside of a classroom or a library. That should bring us lower on the ladder of invention and of future success as a country.

What happened to this young man and his grieving family is an awful, terrible, sad fluke. May his memory be for a blessing.

MOmaid,

Not sure where you're coming from with your post but hey, if it makes you feel good and superior, be my guest. Go for it...

We're here to post our thoughts and enjoy (or not) reading other peoples post. Just as you did...

You take one piece of one of my sentences and twist it all outta shape.

I wrote...

Sounds as if someone may have walked into his path as he was in motion

Notice that very large word "MAY". As in, "one possibility" of many?Just an assumption. That's all. You need to be a little more open minded and take those blinders off when you have a beef with someone else's comment. Analyze your answer before sending...

I'm here to state my mind just as you. And yes, I witnessed this first hand. As I "also" wrote in my post however, luckily nobody was hurt.

Now, you show me where I mentioned it actually "was" someone else's fault, apposed to "may". Please do.

Have a nice day...

Just being young and dumb. You can't stop such things. I remember reading about a softball player who did this after a game and ended up paralyzed for life.

This accident is certainly a terrible tragedy for those who knew and loved him.

If the report is true that he landed on his forehead, or more likely the the part of the scull just above the temples (frontal bone), it would cause a shearing force - resulting in immediate internal decapitation. No one could have saved him if that was the case. The only sliver of "good" in dying this way, is that it is immediate and painless.

Let's not forget that this young man has by now possibly saved several other lives, possibly given a person their vision back, etc. He will live on in those he saved by being an organ donor. Sincere condolences to the family.

In this day and age, isn't it rare to see parents just chalk an accident up to being just an accident?

Heck, even Creekdogs first assumption was that it wasnt this kids fault...unlike the parents. Though, the parents were obviously operating on a tad bit more information than Creekdog...im just pointing out that our INCLINATION is to assume someone else is to blame, even when it's not true - or there's no indication thats the case.

In a nation filled with people itching to pass the buck - on everything - these parents are extremely refreshing.

Peace be with them, sounds like they had an amazing son who will always be in their hearts and minds.

party where the guy hit his head on a counter. after reading it was for a dance
rehearsal, that thought changed to just bad luck. But because this guy was a
donor, he will be helping a number of people in the near future. I'm sure none
of him will go to waste, and his parents should be proud. RIP dude

RLTV (Very first post), what a stupid comment. You and your ilk speak as though a greater consciousness has a checklist of names, and deliberately scratches out a name, and as a result, that person dies. This is utter garbage. No greater consciousness determines when we go. We go as a result of freak accident or willful criminal decisions, or disease or disaster. This explains why people in certain countries usually die of particular causes, and why people in certain age brackets die of particular causes. That's why you hardly ever hear of old people dying from motorcycle accidents or teenagers dying from congestive heart failure.

What a sad story, and my heart really goes out to the family, especially because they sound like such good people. Those of you who just came here to pick apart eachother's comments and start fights over nothing, if you get bored that easily, could you at least go spout your venom on a less solemn story? I've read all the comments, and nobody suggested a lawsuit or pinned blame on someone else or the school, etc. So there was a little speculation regarding what might have gone wrong. So what? Calm down. This was a story about a scientifically inclined kid who enjoyed his college and will be well missed by all of his friends there, a kid who tried a dance move that went wrong, and whose donations (as well as those of his family) will continue on and assist many other people. We were all young risk takers at some point, but few families are as generous as this one.

I was thinking the same thing.

Nowhere in the article does it say this gentleman was well-trained.
All it infers, is that it was a rehearsal.
It doesn't say whether it is the first rehearsal, or one hundreth rehearsal.
It also doesn't say if he had ever done a backflip before IN HIS LIFE.

It's not very difficult to make assumptions off of minimal information. I guess that's why people continue to do it, as if they know something, no one else does.
If you were there, let us know prior to presenting information not in the story, so we can all bask in your superior knowledge.
Too many assumptions. Comment on the story, and let the voices in your head fade out.

That is what the UK would do. They are banning everything that "might" injure someone. If we did away with anything that could injure someone, we would have to give up, hotdogs (7 people die each year from chocking), sky diving, riding bicycles, climbing ladders, all sports, and many other mundane things that we do everyday. It is called life and people die everyday from many sources. If we prevented everybody from dieing in a couple hundred years we would be overrun. Not that we aren't already.

Since we are banning things that lead to death - everyone who has ever had sex dies so lets ban sex, everyone who has ever taken a drink of water dies so lets ban water. Oh if you are born you will eventually die so lets ban birth.

People die, stuff happens it is sad, some causes of death can be avoided, but who gets to play God and decide which are worse. Tom's point is well said, I would only maybe disagree with one of his points - aren't we already over run?

And all tose who think soccer is a safe sport - it has a high level of concussions - just saying.

Here we go again with the idiots saying we should ban (fill in the blank) because it resulted in death. When are these idiots going to realize they are NOT the LEAST bit original or witty with these "we should ban" posts every time someone dies from a freak accident? To all you idiots: WE GET IT, WE GET that you're pro-gun and don't believe in banning guns. NOW SHUT UP ALREADY and grow some brain cells.

Now if the kid did a backflip in a crowd of people and someone across the room died as a direct result from his stupidity, malice or negligence for safety, it would be a closer analogy to why we need gun regulation. Since that is not the case these mockeries are just pathetic.

Wow...you can't even dance without being killed. Well, we should ban dancing and backflips in college. If he wasn't dancing and trying to do backflips, he would not have died.

A kid tragically dies in an accident, and at least two of the first four comments are from gun nut trolls displaying precisely the mentality that should prevent them from even touching a firearm.

Thank you Dever bill 2! I thought the same thing. The young man's parents might be reading these for some measure of comfort; no empathy (let alone sympathy) anymore.

The family has lost a bright, caring, loving, child. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time. What a brave and kind young man to donate his body so that others might live. I was in awe of reading his ultimate gift to others; truly an amazing young man.

Rick, nope, the so called 'gun nut trolls' are merely pointing out that every time someone is shot, the INSTANT reaction is to limit LEGAL ownership of guns, when nearly always, the guns in shooting deaths were obtained ILLEGALLY. If making things illegal eliminated things/behavior, we would HAVE no DUI.

And if you want proof, witness the fact that Chicago (and Newtown) has VERY strict gun control laws.

Bet that makes the moms of the 507 people shot to death in Chicago last year alone feel MUCH better.

Rick, yep, the so called 'gun nut trolls' are merely resorting to deflection.

As if there is somehow an equivalency between an assault weapon brought into a crowded movie theater and a kid doing a back flip.

Those who continually say "ban swimming" or "ban backflips" want you to believe that the proliferation of assault weapons in our society carries the same risk as swimming or gymnastics.

Don't even bother with these gun nut trolls. They are of a sub-high school intellect, maybe sub-junior high, and will never contribute anything meaningful to society as they continue believing that their "ban this" and "ban that" posts are so witty and clever.

It's a horrible story and terribly tragic ... but I'd much rather read about the occasional accident of someone dying while doing gymnastics than read about the rising incidence of heart attacks and obesity because no one gets off the couch to get some exercise. Sitting on your butt all day long is far more lethal.

I almost killed myself similarly on a trampoline when I was 17 and tried a backflip at an outdoor park outside of Detroit....no spotter no harness but wild and crazy kids back then....I still thank the Almighty for letting me survive and still have neck and shoulder problems to this day in my late 60s. Paralysis is often the "better" (if you want to consider the alternative) result of similar injuries since cervical vertebrae are typically involved as in my case.

So tell me, you geniuses, what LAW mandates that in order for something to appear as a lead news headline on the Internet, it must be something that affects the nation like gas prices, or something that involves a famous political figure such as Hugo Chavez?

I thought so. SHUT UP already. Go back to reading about "real" news like what's going on in Washington, Middle Eastern suicide bombings and hurricanes, while the rest of us can take a break from the same boring "real" news and read something that has a strong human interest component--something that will make every parent appreciate their kids more. Reading about oil prices will hardly do that. SHUT UP!

Had he remained an introvert and quietly got straight A's like 90% of other exceptional medical students, he'd be a sober, highly successful doctor with a family and decades of good life ahead of him saving other lives. Instead he fell to the familiar modern pressure of group identity politics on campus, having to conform by separation, the dream of the multi-ethnic lunch table is long gone thanks to political correctness evolving into ethnic isolation. He doesn't live on the islands wearing a loin cloth, he's an American medical student. The college sanctions ethnic backflip practice? Does it make you feel better to know the doctor operating on your heart spent hours in college not studying but working on his backflip between beers and was subjected to modern racial politics instead of concentrating on anatomy??? What a sad tale of modern college politics, the students not their left-wing tenured professors always pay the ultimate price for marxist ideology, the Unabomber was a mathematical genius and headed for a nobel prize until he met some interesting hippie folks, and drugs, in berkeley, the rest is history...

I see this as a tragic accidental death of a young kid. I don't understand, have we as adults forgotten all the things we did as kids for fun that were dumb to do? It's something most if not all of us have done, we do things as kids because we think nothing bad will ever happen to us. Remember?

Then we grew up and we know better, he was having fun and unfortunately did get the ripe old age to realize his mistake. Don't know about you but I've been there, but I lived long enough to see that some of the things I did for fun, as a kid were not too wise. Believe me I know, I used to race cars on a two lane highway, with cars coming straight at me while driving on the wrong side of the road. I know now it was stupid, but then it was just fun. This young man died from a fluke accident while having fun with friends.

Good to see I'm not the only one who feels this way. I'm American of German, French, English heritage. So what? I don't feel the need, unlike many in my city of residence, to put any of those flags on my car's bumper, or on a flagpole outside my home, nor to join a separatist organization. I knew many Filipinos when I was in high school, and college, and they were part of the student body, did not feel a need to have their own separate organizations.

While such a tragedy, it is beautiful that he had the forethought to make himself an organ donor. This speaks volumes to the type of young man he was. RIP KEVIN.... You will live on through those that you have helped. My condolences to his family and friends.

Really sad, a positive note that he had a living will for use of his organs - must have been a real squared away kid! But, when your ticket gets punched, that's all folks! Nobody said life was going to be perfect or even fair - but it's the best chance we get!

does this qualify for a darwin award?

I think you more qualify than he does! what have you done beside sitting in front of the computer and posted some stupid comment?

Sergeant Pepper, Kevin does not qualify. This was a tragic accident. However, your eager personal interest in nominating a bright young college student qualifies you for a nomination. Any ayes in the room?

Those of you who have nothing nice to say just need to shut up! A young man has lost his life. Parents have lost a child. It sounds like he was a great guy. As a parent who lost a son when a drunk driver broadsided our son's car, I know from personal experience how awful it is to lose a child. My heart goes out to this young man's family. I'm sure their world is as shattered as ours has been. Until you have been there, you have no idea how horrible it is.

berekah, I am sorry for your loss. It is something that no one understands until they go through it. My best friend lost her daughter in a motorcycle wreck, she was 24. To this day she is still broken from that tragedy. It is nothing to joke about, people, it is a devastating loss to lose a child.

Berekah, My condolences to you. I to have lost our only child at 14. Victim of an accidental rifle discharge by someone else. Only people that have had a loss like this can even BEGIN to understand the pain. It hurts to read comments like "things happen" or "Darwin award" about this kid because it makes me think of the loss of my own child and the pain the parents must feel.

It would be much nicer if people would post like they would standing in front of the parents rather than with their anonymous internet muscles.

His parents sound like faith-based people who loved and enjoyed their son and their time together here on earth.

Up to a certain age, which has yet to be determined, kids still may believe they are impervious to injury and put themselves in danger. It is sad that this has happened, but it did and you just have to move on and celebrate the life he had already lived. It's worse when you consider it had nothing to do with war or other violence. Condolences to the family.

This is why you don't do things like this because you do things like this first of all it is silly and second of all it is very very dangerous.

May GOD give all of the family and friends the strength to go through this really tough time now and for all time to come as I am certain he will!!!

I take it then, that none of your precious brats (assuming you braved the risk of having any) ever played sports, ever drove a car, ever surfed...and good God I'm sure you were NEVER a hypocrite and took your family to have fun at a circus...or Seaworld...and yup, your kids won't grow up to be pilots or astronauts...all because doing a back flip during a dance is silly and very, very dangerous and a person should never, ever, ever do that!

Goodness!!! Don't do that!!! Silly boy. So many people have posted such irrational posts regarding a young man that passed away living a lively, active life. It is sad. It happens. It is unfortunate. But I won't stop flying, I won't stop dancing, I won't stop racing, I won't stop. God Bless him.
