This country needs to do more about pedophiles. I don't care about parental rights, when it comes to this subject, and every child, who has been a victim NEEDS and it should be mandated to go to therapy. If it isn't covered by their insurance, we, THE PEOPLE, should pay for it. If the therapy prevents those children from becoming pedophiles themselves, we wouldn't waste money in the future. Investigations, DNA tests, prosecution, jailing, trials, all cost a ton more, than spending money on therapy, not to mention, it helps cut the cycle of abuse, and can save thousands of more children, from being harmed this way. More than likely, he was a victim of molestation, when he was a child, and the same goes to the person who did it to him, and so on.

Just to be clear, those who claim pedophiles are "created" because they were sexually abused as children should note that many experts who weighed in on the Sandusky case have found that is NOT true. There is definitely something wrong with the way these people's brains operate vs. normal people and it is not always a clear choice for them as impulse control is also a part of their "damaged" brains. Does that excuse it, absolutely not...but definitely points out the issue is not as black and white or good vs. evil...but instead a tragedy produced by genetics and who knows how many things that can go wrong in a person's development both in and out of the womb.

Marie485962, I worked in Corrections for part of my life and we had a few pedophiles incarcerated, and also some psychiatrists and psychologists that worked with us. The experts told me that while being a victim of pedophilia was not a definite causation to becoming a pedophile themselves, they felt that it could be in some cases, either because it was the child's first sexual experience or because of genetics, since a lot of these perps tend to be family members. It is next to impossible to pin these it down, because the perps don't usually know themselves what caused them to want to sexually assault children. But I do know this: I've never seen one get rehabilitated. What turns a person on sexually will always turn them on sexually, they can repress it or hide it from others, but it will always be there. They also tend to be the most manipulative people you will meet, they will do anything to be around children and that's why you find them in many occupations that bring them in close contact with them. These guys we had would do anything, including risk their own lives by ratting out the other prisoners, to be allowed in the vicinity of children on visiting days. I think the only "cure" is what this guy did, suicide.

Kaybeetoys - you are completely correct. There are many perps out there that use these positions of trust and power to do just that....until they are caught. I work in healthcare and have a family member in law enforcement and unfortunately we see a lot of wrong all the time. Personally, I was sexually abused as a child by a man in our church, and then later gang-raped as an adult by a group of "buddies" out on the town - one of them was a firefighter, and one was a hospital administrator. They absolutely used their positions to garner my trust and "respect" and then took turns holding me down. It happens to the best of us, and I guarantee those parents never thought twice about allowing their kid to be around those guys. I was lucky enough to survive and now help other sexual assault victims. I hope this kid (now a man) can get through this and use this experience to help stop other perps. I pray for his healing, and I'm also doubly glad the perp won't be able to do this to anyone else anymore!

Background checks, anyone ! Most communities are so happy to have volunteer firefighters they don't look twice. It's that or tax up the folks and pay for pros. Then you have to background 'em - more tax money. IF they find a perv, they hire em anyway, but they also hire mental health pros to take care of the staff - mo tax money. Then if someone screws up, they hire more people to deal with the screw up - mo tax money. Don't forget retirement at 20 to 25 years - mo tax money. That's how you have in 2009, 20% of the US workforce were gubmint employees and all gubmints bankrupt or teetering . So in some communities those volunteer guys look pretty good, so no background checks. Child safety zones indeed.

I know lots of "normal" men (whatever you think that means) who have had careers as teachers, counselors, coaches, clergy, first responders, etc. None of the ones I knew ever did anything inappropriate with young people... period! We had a "normal" guy as our scoutmaster when I was in the boy scouts. Older fella, no kids, married to the daugher of the local dairy farmer. He was great... camping trips, canoeing, rock climbing, you name it. He always organized activities that resulted in completing the requirements for merit badges, but didn't present it as such. When we'd meet after the trip, we'd review the checklist for the merit badge and realized we'd just completed it. Great guy, good mentor, good motivator. Plus, he'd bring chocolate mild from the dairy and heat it up for nearly unlimited hot chocolate by fire at night. Makes me ill to think of how many kids had horrible boy scout experiences after ours were so good and wholesome.

As RelaxJay described, I too am thankful for superb scouting experiences and over several years between the ages of 9-13 probably had 5 different scoutmasters. ALL were fine, service-minded and highly moral men that set a high bar for an example to follow and I became an Eagle Scout under their leadership. But at the same time, lots of other dads were involved with our programs and if there had been any inappropriate behaviour it would have been caught very, very quickly. Parents just can't punt when it comes to being involved and they have to take responsibility for making sure their kids are safe.

Well, he did take action by contacting the police and working with them to catch him. Please remember that he had been manipulated for many years while a child, so that probably screwed him up psychologically. I think he must have had a terrible home that he could not tell his parents or a teacher or SOMEONE what was happening when he was a kid/ But you do have to wonder, once he was an adult , that if he did not want to continue this relationship he would have stopped it instead of waiting so long.

He probably lost his definition of "normal." Perhaps, yes, he had a dysfunctional home life, or was neglected, which tends to leave kids more vulnerable to be preyed upon. Also, as horrific as this is, some victims can experience some measure of pleasure or feeling of being "loved" - especially if they have nothing healthy to compare it to. It take real fortitude to get out of this twisted and confusing situation, and I'm glad that the kid could do so.

What I don't get is the firefighters' actions. They obviously knew what they were doing is wrong! Way to insult all first responders by using their positions of authority to mask their depravity. Most firefighters are men and women of honor.

This situation is much more complex for the victim than meets the eye. These so-called "firefighters" probably made him feel guilty for being involved in the first place and as if he couldn't stop them without major consequences of some sort.

Men that have sex with young teens will do anything to make sure their relationships remain intact.

Not to mention the fact that the boy has to come to terms with his own past actions and be willing to see everything publicized in the media.

Your ignorance is shining brighter than the sun on a clear day. For 13 years I was molested by my father. By the time I was old enough to realize what he was doing to me was "wrong" I began to tell him he needs to stop and that is when the threats began. You want to know how all this ended once I finally told a friend in confidence? My mother did not believe...my father was right. The courts tried to run my life and split my family apart...my father was right. A couple of years later I graduated high school and left home. I did not see or contact my family for 18 years...my father was right. And that is not even the half of what I went through.

At 19 years old I met a man I thought was the most wonderful person in the world...until he started beating me up like a punching bag. Who do you turn to when no one helps you, not even the police even after he put me in the hospital twice? I began to think that all the abuse as a child and now into my adulthood is what I deserved. My self-esteem was so low because I believed him when he said no one else cares about me. I actually believe him because I had no place to turn. My family abandoned me so I guess that is what I was...nothing. This went on for four years until I met someone who did care about me...a complete stranger that had the balls to step in. What this man did for me was far greater than what any shrink would have done...let alone law enforcement. He dealt with my issues of not being able to trust anyone and my low self-esteem. To this day the biggest affect that lingers is not letting anyone help me when I fail or fall down, regardless if it was my fault or not. It is just part of who I am. It is nice to know that there are a few people who care enough to help even when it is difficult to understand. The pain and suffering is always more difficult on the inside than the bruises on the outside.

Through hard work and perserverance I put myself through 3 college degrees. I never had a roommate for various reasons. I had always worked full time and on an occasion I held a 2nd job to help pay for school. Encouragement from others was all that I allowed. There was also another battle I was dealing with...I was born with Cystic Fibrosis. Going through life battling a disease that has no cure while battling the rest of what life through at me sometimes made me want to give up. I lost the self-pity for most of the time but I certainly do not wish my life on anyone. People lack sensativity toward people especially when they do not know the shoes that person has walked in to get where they are. I blame it on ignorance. People should be grateful they are not up against these kinds of brick walls in life. I would like to see how they would handle situations where their hands are tied behind their backs and nowhere to turn to, but I would prefer if people stopped being judgemental toward others. Stop blaming the victim for not getting away. It is far more difficult than just walking away...it's knowing who to trust. People like Dave is one of the reasons victims have trouble coming forward...because the victim gets blamed.

Only a person who was never a victim or abused physically and mentally would make a statement like that. I was abused for over 4 years from 12-15. I'm 51 now. I only told my wife a few years ago. You have no idea how this eats at you over time. You feel fear all the time. You don't trust anyone. You cannot accept any criticism from anyone. Who could I turn to? My parents? I was threatened. I was humiliated. The humiliation on their part would have been too much take. What would the neighbors and all the relatives think! That's how my parents thought. I would have been blamed. I saved them from that pain. People who were abused who are now in their 70's still have not talked about it.

When you're 12 your mind is still being shaped and molded. When a abuser contaminates that development with his sick and twisted behavior, it changes you and your image of what you deserve. You are conditioned to think you're the problem... that you're crazy... that this is what you deserve. The abuser isolates the victim and at times makes the victim feel dependant on them for approval etc. That this man, at 24 came forward (especially with the additional stigma of being a male sex abuse victim) should be applauded. We should all embrace him and say it's ok and that it wasn't his fault. He deserves nothing less than our compassion and encouragement. My heart breaks for him... and as a mother of a young son I thank him for shining a light on child abuse. I pray that my son never goes through anything like this. Maybe by this man telling his story and by police going after them, other sick-o's will have fewer places to hide. That in turn helps us all.

I wondered about the term 'slavery' too. The headline says slavery, but the article said he was charged with sex trafficking. They brought in teens from other states for sexual purposes, and since the teens were coerced, that makes it fit the definition (I think. I'm no expert, checked on wiki). Even though they weren't kidnapped or forced by gunpoint, the fact they can't legally consent might have something to do with it. Also, once someone becomes a victim, the abuser can continue to coerce them to 'participate' by threatening to tell (playing on their sense of shame).

I'm presuming that in this case, the word "slavery" isn't being used in the context as many of us would commonly think (whips, chains, shackles, oh my). You would have to look up the Vermont statute to get to the meat of the meaning, but I would guess that "indentured servant" might be somewhere in there...just sayin'.

I think the term slavery used in this context is referring to bringing the boys across state lines for sex. It's more of a trafficking offense, although "slavery" and "trafficking" are sometimes used synonymously.

A woman who is beat by her husband can leave any time, yet they don't. The agressor will twist the victim into thinking it is all their fault. I imagine this kid had a similar experience. Remember a 24 year old man can revert to a young teenage boy given the right psychological manipulation.

PC and Comments, I just looked up that statute and your both right, legally slavery and human trafficking are the same in vermont.

I think the key point is that the actions constitute coercion under the vermont lawand by giving the victim something of value it becomes a commercial sex act so it falls under that law.

The scary part is that if you buy a woman a drink and lie to her in order to get into her pants, that might also fall under this law.

I agree, slavery is reaching. It was definitely manipulation and strong coercion, but the child (now adult) was able to freely leave their presence and report them to the authorities at any time.

From a legal perspective in this case, slavery is similar to being a pimp. It is a broader application of the term but it does apply. The dirtbags pimped him out to other men... making him a sex slave.

There is no victim when two consenting adults enter into a sexual relationship, homosexual or heterosexual--thats why it has become socially acceptable. The age of consent has changed through the centuries, but there is always a victim when a pedophile molests a child. It will not be socially acceptable in 50 or 500 or 5000 years. Non-consensual sex will always be a crime in a civilized society.
