A winter storm was expected to bring up to a foot of snow to parts of New England on Friday.
Forecasters said Boston could get up to 6 inches of snow and New York as much as 3 inches. Interior Massachusetts could be hit harder — up to 12 inches.
The system was expected to hang out through Saturday morning.
"We are watching a conveyor belt of wave after wave of snow coming in over the Atlantic," Alan Dunham, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service told the AP. "The morning commute will definitely be a challenge," he added, especially for those headed into Boston from the south.
NBC Connecticut warned that "isolated power outages are possible from the combination of wet snow accumulating on trees and power lines and gusty winds."
"Late Friday into Friday night, the storm will finally shift out to sea with impacts limited to lingering breezy winds along the Northeast coast by Saturday morning," according to weather.com.
In some of the towns hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy, residents are anxiously awaiting another storm to swing through. NBC's Ron Allen reports.
Parts of the Jersey shore, still struggling to recover from superstorm Sandy, were dealing with a new bout of flooding on Thursday.
Pounding surf broke through a temporary dune in Mantoloking during the early-morning high tide, sending water flowing onto a section of Route 35, which was closed for several hours.
New Jersey's Department of Transportation, Mantoloking's public works crews and contractors on Thursday were scooping and pushing sand back into the breach.
"They're trying to keep the dune system intact," Police Chief Mark Wright told the AP.
Other shore towns also had trouble with flooding, including Sea Bright, where firefighters put out a blaze in a vacant commercial building sparked by a downed power line.

Ocean waves crash over a seawall and into houses along the coast in Scituate, Mass., on Thursday.
Along the Massachusetts coast, which was hammered by a blizzard four weeks ago, people braced for surging seas. Homeowners were encouraged to evacuate. Photos showed two-story-high waves crashing against seawalls.
“We still have remnants of the last storm in the yard,” Paula Polasky, who lives in the coastal town of Scituate, told NBC station WHDH in Boston before packing up and leaving. “I’m not going to take any chances this time.”
Parts of Pennsylvania and Ohio woke up to as much as 6 inches of snow Thursday, with the possibility of more in the Philadelphia suburbs into Friday, NBC Philadelphia reported.
The system was a no-show in Washington, where predictions of the worst snowfall in two years came to nothing more than a slushy annoyance. It was far more impressive to the west: Parts of Virginia got 20 inches of snow.
People in the nation's capital didn’t even need to break out snow shovels after the storm left only a scattering of flakes.
Federal offices closed, schools were shut and Congress postponed hearings on Wednesday as the city braced for what people online dubbed Snowquester, after the automatic budget cuts known as the sequester.
“They just say that it might snow and the whole city shuts down,” Sheri Sable told The Associated Press as she walked her dogs in a slight drizzle in Washington on Thursday.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Snowstorm misses Washington, pounds areas west of nation's capital
This story was originally published on Thu Mar 7, 2013 7:07 AM EST

I figured they'ed get it wrong. Just like the politicians. Now everyone can get back to work and do nothing.
So the snow didn't hit D.C. ? no big surprise, it only goes to prove the old adage is true, you know......
"Not a snowballs chance in hell"
Maybe after a 30 year warming trend we are back to normal winter weather?
Gasp!
Snow...New England....Winter.....who would have ever thought this possible?
End the Snow Violence now!
Global warming is caused this storm to veer off course!
The government's day off cannot be considered a "paid snow day" so they should be charged vacation time. HAHAHAHAHA - I know - that was rather funny wasn't it?
BOY, They BLEW IT, Alright! Right up our BUTTS!
"People in the nation's capital didn’t even need to break out snow shovels after the storm left only a scattering of flakes."
is this the snow the storm left behind or the politicians?
Figures, they close down in "anticipation" of snow but guess they all took home their pay for the day. Private enterprises, no doubt, stayed open. Anyone see anything wrong here? Of course the question is only out there for those that have SKIN in the game.
But you can't risk having government employees out in the snow. Think about the dangers.
Sequester the emergency management offices. They did the same thing the week before farther north. Announced on Wed that Friday schools and gubmint offices would be closed. Snow started Friday afternoon. Saturday was bad. But Friday was OK. Just lost a day - but the paycheck for life folks in gubmint thought it was great. In out town we have a major university with an emergency management Staff, the County has one, We have a State office, and a City office. Each little storm is an opportunity for these folks to alarm everyone because they only have about 15 to 20 days a year of actual "near threat" conditions or potential to worry about, But they spend all year every year getting ready for it. So closing schools and gubmint offices is the main thing they can advise when they see a blob on the radar. We all have very good local tv station weather forecasters, excellent national weather channel forecasters. We do not need 4 of 5 emergency management offices in every city or county in addition to the commercial forecasters. That is the waste and abuse in gubmint spending that is just one of thousands of ways these people are killing us financially. They need to cut it to one office in each region. Sequester this !

Not worry - Tornado Season is right around the corner and then comes Hurricane Season, so they can get everyone worried through the year. Hurricane season ends in December and voila, we are back to winter snow season!
GM Jack,
ya forgot flood.
winter , flood, tornado, summer.
Yeah, good point, because when I was in JAX and the rains came, Black Creek would definite over flow its banks! Thanks for reminding me what I do not miss! LOL
GM Jack and Scooter,
i do not miss the rain floods and tornadoes here in Florida especially when it's Hurricane season
Evening Jack...Wish some of the snow/rain would come down this way...everything is brown, crispy and pretty well dead. Even the gumtrees are drooping and it is now Autumn. Had 3 weeks of around 30oC which is a bit unusual for us in Victoria. Seems this coming week we are in for it again 37oC and north winds from the desert...which means more trouble and bushfires that forever lurk. Still not much you can do about it and ride it out like always..have a great day...
We'd probably be better off if the politicians in DC took a lot more snow days. It's not like they're very productive even when they're there!
In NYC predictions of 2-4 inches left us with no snow as well. Can't be right all the time.
Same old Same old. Have a good day all.
same to you pretty lady
Well good morning Scooter, how is it in your end of the woods. Here this morning 27 and should get to 54 today. Tomorrow in the 60's YEA, I want to get some veggies out this weekend.
i wont be planted till April but its been right around 30-35 last couple days, little melt off but that will be changing.
Yea we will only be putting out hardy veggies..
Scooter
Good thing you added "but". I thought you done gave up the ghost! LOL
Tramp and Carol--- You need a little green house and a cold frame. They work great. But I can't get my Lavender to grow. Good Luck.
Hey Mary. Lavender likes it very dry and not allot of water with full sun. I have tons of them in my yard, also the mosquito's hate lavender that is why I got mine started years ago.
Yards too small Mary, and i only do it cause i get board, but planting is kinda in our blood around here. Its what we have done for generations after all., but at least when ya get my age now its all about,.... well gotta go get the garden planted, weeded, fertilised, etc.,.... whew.. that ten minutes was rough,.... best have a quick beer.....or two....or maybe....
Carol, around here the water has been too low to worry about mosquito's much. its the fly's wish i could plant something to get rid of .
Wow I wish I could be so luck. My veggie garden is an acre Scooter, and believe me by the time fall comes I am ready for it to be dead. I would love a small one around as borders, that would be AWESOME, but I can allot of veggies, and make soups for winter.
i want to plant now.....hmmmmm any ideas into what i should plant other then tomatoes?
It depends on how much land you have Rose. If you do not have much land you can plant in pots they will be fine. Tomatoes and cukes do well in pots, also broccoli as well. Done them all that way. Lots of sun and water there in Florida.
:) i have plenty of land and a couple of pots my mom wants to plant avocados
Green beans, potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, corn, tomatoes, cukes, watermelon this is what I start with.
sweet :) im going to stop by the store to but the seeds
I like Zucchini ( the plant dont go there), slice em up and fry em. and 4-5 plants and you wont have enough friends to give em too.
Tomatoes sucked last year. corn takes too much room for the yield. gotta plant smart . Going to try the lavender around my porch though.
Oh forgot that one Scooter. That makes great bread too. All my neighbors plant different stuff so we all share with each other so we have plenty. My one neighbor is 76 so we all give them viggies so they do not need to do a garden to hard on them
le gasp i love Zucchini and squash
plant em on a mound of dirt about 1-2 foot high or hillside Rose it works much better. Rhuhbard is good too but it is a perennial and will come back every year ( forever it seams)
Or maybe we should just plant rum. Look like Jack always has a bumper crop.
GM Scooter, Jack, Carol and all.
If this winter doesn't end soon, it will be snow peas and iced cabbage...
thanks for the tip :) and Jay have you ever tried cabbage steamed? its delicious
GA (here in B'bados) and GM Jay wherever you may be! Good one with the "snow peas" just watch out for yellow snow! LOL
Yeah, it seems this winter has been held off until after the groundhog foretold of an early Spring! Sometimes we beat winter and sometimes winter beats us all!
For you squash lovers, try acorn squash but pick it while it is small and cook it like summer (yellow) squash. I started growing these several years ago and out of curiosity tried some while they were small and they are really good with a sweet and slightly nutty flavor. The acorn is not as prolific as the summer squash, but if you miss picking it you just let it mature and then store it to bake, but the real prize is eating it while it is young and tender. Steam it or fry it, either way it is wonderful. Also, try spaghetti squash this way as well. Pick it before it begins to string out on the inside and cook it the same way you would a crook neck yellow squash. I have a neighbor who generally does not like squash who had some young spaghetti squash and he raved about how good they were. They are so sweet and good, it is making me hungry just thinking about them. Oh, and try them with a little Coconut oil on them instead of butter. If you get the good stuff it adds a slight coconut flavor to the vegies that really enhances the flavor.
GM Jay, so right Jack
Jdgregory;
ill try that sounds pretty good, im hungry now thinking about it. :)
me too
good job jd.
Rose, I'll have to give that a try. Iced cabbage is a bit too crunchy.
Jack, I'm in Minnesota, so I know if snow's not white, it's not right. Everything looks like a white fire hydrant to the dogs in the neighborhood.
Carol, 54 degrees today? I could think of opening our swimming pool. Oh, wait. Mine is still a hockey rink for my backyard critters.
60's this weekend yes yes yes
Jay;
yeah its too crunchy for me as well
Carol; it was 45 degrees this morning in the afternoon its going to be 65 degrees
Fried cabbage is the best. Put it in the fry pan with a little oil and salt and pepper.. WOW can not wait. Dam this winter weather it has to leave REAL SOON
agreed, im ready for the spring oh and dont forget this sunday is daylight savings time
This must be the trolls form of e-mail or chat?

And on the Great Plains today is will be slightly breezy with a sustained winds of 30 mph with gusts up to 40. Keep those kites in the garage and rocks in your pockets. GMUS
GM StonePipe! Good Morning Carol and Scooter, also.
Sounds like your typical weather for this time of year! I prefer where I am, thanks.
Hahahahaha I would as well. I want the 90's and the beach right about now Jack.
Carol
and the Rum is fine any time of year!
Send me some. lol It is always 5 o'clock somewhere
Good afternoon all, The sun is finally shining and if you are not in the wind is a blissful 37 degrees. :)
They missed the mark here by ........ a foot or so. We got nada. Just rain. I feel for those in New England.
And how much did the adult snow-day cost the taxpayer?
it probably saved money, it was one less day they had to cram B.S. we don't want down our throats.
@levi--- We'll know how much the ADULT SNOW DAY costs when the scandal breaks. GM Tramp
gm pretty lady, any time this bunch is not there they aren't spending money we don't have. Don't ya wish you could go to YOUR local bank, tell em you need a few million to spend your way out of debt and you promise to pay em back....someday...maybe...And they were dumb enough to just hand it over?
Can't speak for other gubmint employees but school teachers are on contract for a certain number of instructional days so snow days are made up at a later time. Taxpayers are not "on the hook" for free days with the school systems because the calendars will simply be extended into the summer until the required number of days are met.
Funny not one Liberal MOONBAT blaming George W.Bush for this one as is the usual modus operandi, are they finally learning that Dear Leader is in charge now, also did the non snow also ground the Drones that can kill U.S Citizens on their own soil
how come we didnt see barry with a snowshovel? its not like him to miss a prefect photo op. not that he would even have a clue as how to use it but just wondereing.
got about a foot on the ground here, rain predicted for friday
lets see.....snow + rain+ warm=....? ....oh yeah floods....EKKK FLOODS.!!!!....run away... dont build there....doom and gloom...its somebodies fault....global warming global cooling....climate change no climate change....oh whoa...oh fret....oh worry...
( sorry folks just practiceing for this weekend).
lol yea you can never believe the weather man.....So when you look outside that is your weather that day.
Yeah.
I use the "weather rock" forecast - if rock is wet = rain, if whiet=snow, if you can't see it = fog or night time....oh, if rock is dry who knows what to expect! LOL
Good Morning to all Usual Suspects!
DC is always in a tizzy....
or a frenzy
Meanwhile, here in Denver, the approximately 10 inches of snow we received from last weekends storm is melting nicely and soaking in instead of evaporating. Our community garden is muddy so no watering for the time being, and all the fruit trees are full of buds. The annual crocus count at the Denver Botanic Garden revealed that the crocus and miniature iris are blooming and some daffodils and tulips are pushing up shoots and leaves. This is my favorite time of year preparing for coming gardening season.
As concerns the next storm now wrapping up off Southern California, told my girlfriend to expect 8 inches this weekend.
Rex - loved your post! Too bad it couldn't be 9 inches (or more)...
LMAO that is great Rex...told my girlfriend to expect 8 inches this weekend. Spring is also my favorite time of year. The flowers are up here too. The Irises are next.. Yea my favorite. But nothing beats fresh veggies.
Told mine she just has to soldier on and suffer a bit , I'm not "shoveling off" the top 3 inches for anyone....
( ever hear "first liar don't stand a chance" ?)
hee,hee,hee
Wow, Phoenix is supposed to have rain tomorrow, and, gosh, maybe even thunderstorms! Can we stay home too? Sequester or no sequester? For the poor furloughed workers, who might have to stay home for a few days, let them spray snow flakes on their windows and they can pretend it is bad weather. Having grown up in Chicago and then lived downstate, I can say Washington has never seen snow... In seriousness, weather forecasters do get it wrong - the problem with government workers is that they truly believe they are special. As this "snow day" proves, we can live without you a day a week - you'll like it and so will we.
At least they wait until the snow actually hits before they cancel school here in Cincinnati. Got to love those 5am recorded calls from the superintendent saying schools closed. No businesses were closed, I thought as adults you didn't get snow days unless it was an all out blizzard. Oh wait I don't work for the state or federal government.
they have schools in Cincinnati?...who knew?....
Funny Scooter.... :)
i try ( been there btw) got an offer the other day to go back....dont think so.
Mom2Five,(I like that, by the way; you should be proud to be a mother), As I stated earlier, schools are required to have a certain number of instructional days each year, (in my state it is 178) and snow days may interrupt the schedule but these days must be made up at the end of the year, so, for school employees, at least, this is not a "free day". I know calls from the superintendent are sometimes irritating but I think you would be one of the first people to be upset if a school bus had an accident and students were killed. Most school busses are not equipped to handle snow and the drivers are usually not professional drivers so the risk is simply not worth the chance to shorten the calendar by a few snow days. Again, I emphasize, these days must, by law and contracts, be made up so they are not free.
JD, I am a proud mother :). I agree safety first, we normally do not use snow days in our district. We have limited busing and our city (suburb of Cincinnati) has its own city workers. My little side street was completely cleared before 6am. In our case I feel like they just wanted to burn up their first and probably only snow day of the year. I don't mind the 5am calls because that's when my alarms goes off. I can only remember one year that the school district used enough snow days that we had a shortened Spring Break. Most years they use 1 maybe 2 of the allotted snow days.
And Scoot, Cincinnati is a great city. :) I bet you would have fun seeing my version of Cincinnati.
All those government government workers that didn't show up for work are non essential and should be part of the sequester cuts.
I have a friend in Chicago that works for the Federal Government, he worked from home. At least they actually had a snow storm there. What gets me is they aren't scheduled off on certain days like New Years Eve, but every year the President declares it a "holiday". They get too many paid days off.
so's the government at large. after all it was formed for the defense of the U.S. .....NOTHING else.
Might as well shut Washington down. They do less damage closed.
Oh SallyAnn where are you? Storm Shut down D.C. i figured your would of posted a hilarious ignorant comment by now
LMAO Rose she is sleeping in or putting on foundation which takes her all morning. Let the trolls sleep in, it has been a great morning.
XD yep probably the chaos will happen in the afternoon
Gm Rose . I kinda miss her, in some sick twisted way.
Gm Scooter strange enough i do too i miss ragging on her ignorance if that made any type of sense.
That is frigging great ya'll
:)
I am in Key West this week. Don't really care.
Im in Key mid-west...i dont really either.
I Lost my Keys and I care!
Yeah, Philly was supposed to get hit (my county in particular), but we didn't get a single flake. Doesn't stop the local news from running reports every half hour about it, though.
NO FLAKES? in philly? i find that hard to beleive. ....So where do Eagles fans come from?
82 degrees in Peoria, AZ. yesterday...75 today...partly clouded...think I'll take in a Spring Training Game...
Sounds great
30 & Snow in Peoria Il. Yesterday, looks like you picked the right Peoria. ( in many many many ways.)
I guess forecasts of heavy snow and then getting none are OK - better safe than sorry, but the continual hype by the weather sites and news sites like it never ever snowed before gets old. But then again, that's what weather sites do, report on the weather. Most of the time, the weather is mundane at best; when bad weather could actually occur, they milk it for all its worth.
It looks like meteorologists need a little more schooling.
or a little less schooling...never met a "book smart" person who actually was.
Obama is amazing he was able to stop this storm even with the sequester cuts.
Of course only with the help of Dr. Al Gore.
Wow you get 6" of snow and they close everything down. Back in the fifties and sixties they got allot more than that and nothing closed down. The younger generation has just had it to easy over the last 40 or so years. Wait till we go back to getting that kind of snow then they will really be crying.
