Border protection workers warned of possible furloughs due to sequester

A U.S. Border Patrol agent looks into Mexico from the border near Sonoita, Arizona, on Feb. 26.

Federal workers responsible for securing the nation’s borders were warned on Thursday that furloughs may be coming in April due to forced spending cuts, the latest in a series of troubling proclamations from government agencies trying to sound the alarm before sequestration takes full effect.

A senior official with the Department of Homeland Security confirmed to NBC News that all 60,000 U.S. Customs and Border Protection employees received furlough notices, saying the forced time off would be necessary because of the automatic cuts.

The furloughs would not begin until mid-April and could total up to 14 days during the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.

Congress has the power to alter the cuts, which were agreed to by a majority of House Republicans and signed by President Barack Obama, before the furloughs ever take place.

Since sequestration began to take effect March 1, departments throughout the government have publicly hit the panic button with warnings of what the automatic spending cuts could mean for them and the country.

This week, the White House announced it has suspended tours of the West Wing. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has said teachers may lose their jobs, a comment he later amended. Former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said the cuts have already made the country less safe.

Likewise, the announcement from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection suggests that America’s borders will be less secure.

"In order to address the more than half a billion in budget cuts imposed by sequestration, U.S. Customs and Border Protection must take significant budget reduction actions,” read a statement released by a spokesperson. "CBP will continue to make every effort to minimize the sequester's impact on public safety and national security, but expects that planned furlough of employees…will increase wait times at ports of entry, including international arrivals at airports, and reduce staffing between land ports of entry.”

Reductions in overtime at all ports of entry began on March 2 while reductions in Border Patrol overtime will begin on April 7.

Has anyone noticed a trend here? Americans are being punished for having the audacity to demand that our government reign in its out of control spending. Meanwhile, billions of foreign aid dollars continue to flow outside of our borders and our interventionist foreign policy spares no expense.

To me sounds like Obama using scare tactic to get what he wants all I can say is I hope the republicans that have stood against him stand there ground and If we are so hard up for money maybe we should not have sent Egypt 250 mil two days after we announced the cuts or maybe we should not have spent 50 mil on new uniforms for TSA they should have been cut from government not border patrol not like they do much but harass and molest innocence people any way..

Maybe they should start with things like the $830,000.00 dollar GSA conference in Las Vegas, or how about the $535 Million dollars we lost on Solyndra, it costs what $180,000 an hour every time Obama decides to fly somewhere to give a pep rally?

How much did it cost us to Honor, I mean now dishonor, Samira Ibrahim? Wouldn't it be nice if they had vetted her weeks ago instead of being called out on it a day before she was to be Honored by Michele Obama, and Kerry?

Now they're threatening our border to mexico by sending workers home. Of course this means more illegal entrants on our soil and more that will be handed carte blanche treatment to citizenship at taxpayer expense.

It's not like EVERYONE has to take Monday off without pay. Sure, if they were that stupid, then yes, all illegal immigrant infiltration would happen. No, they will stagger who takes off when.

This is just POTUS Barry's way of making the public get scared...He is trying to be a grand schemer; one that thinks he is a puppet master.

Wow......here we go again folks.

The DHS recently signed a contract for $ 50,000,000 to purchase new TSA uniforms, but yet is telling 60,000 borders agents they may be furloughed due to the "sequester" ?

Putting our American citizens at risk and allowing potential holes in our borders to allow more Illegal Aliens (Immigrants) come over the fence prior to the Big Amnesty Deal.

Time for Mr. Obama to step up to the plate, Man up, and tell his "elite" Progressive Cabinet members to cut their STAFFS instead of cutting things like border security. Wait a minute.....MAYBE that is what he wanted anyway. Oh yeah....blame it on Bush the Republicans. Those dinners and lunches must have been for photo ops.

Obama is telling all of his department and agency heads to make their sequester cuts in away that will be most visible to, and impact the public as much possible. He is playing a childish game designed to try and pressure the Republicans into giving him what he wants by purposely making these cuts as painful to the public as possible. He is hoping that the people are too stupid to realize what he is doing and blame the Republicans for the cuts in services and reduction in the safety of this nation. Obama is not behaving like a president, he is behaving like a spoiled child who is going to hold his breath until the parents give him the cookie he wants. It is utterly disgraceful and just further illustrates why Obama is a complete failure as a president.

This is out-f-ing-rageous! The one thing we need to maintain and enhance is our borders, to prevent the free-flow of ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS into the U.S., which costs us HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS EVERY YEAR! Removing the Border Agents is the LAST thing we should be doing, as it will cost us more in the form of ILLEGALS and their impositions upon American taxpayer services.

O is playing a twisted and despicable game with the protections of the rights of American citizens and LEGAL immigrants. Just last week it was discovered that the O Administration released thousands of ILLEGALS from ICE custody. This is positively unacceptable!!!!

A GOVERNMENT WHICH REFUSES TO ENFORCE ITS OWN LAWS IS INTOLERABLE!

Hey Alex (#1.18). YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT! First of all, your premise is ALL WRONG. I am a registered Democrat, but I sure don't possess the mind-numbing partisan allegiance that you do. I did not vote for O in '12 because of his pledge for rewards and special treatment for immigration lawbreaking and his devotion to the subversion of our immigration laws! And, frankly, I think leaders in both parties are full of sh1+!

Second, as reported on NBC.com a few days ago on March 2, 2013:

WASHINGTON — The Homeland Security Department released from its jails more than 2,000 illegal immigrants facing deportation in recent weeks due to looming budget cuts and planned to release 3,000 more during March, The Associated Press has learned.

The newly disclosed figures, cited in internal budget documents reviewed by the AP, are significantly higher than the "few hundred" illegal immigrants the Obama administration acknowledged this week had been released under the budget-savings process.

The government documents show that Immigrations and Customs Enforcement released roughly 1,000 illegal immigrants from its jails around the U.S. each week since at least Feb. 15. The agency's field offices have reported more than 2,000 immigrants released before intense criticism this week led to a temporary shutdown of the plan, according to the documents.

The states where immigrants were released include Arizona, California, Georgia and Texas. . .

So, as you can see--- NOT ONLY DID THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION RELEASE THOUSANDS OF ILLEGALS (not sure why you would have questioned their agenda in this regard), but they lied and told the public that it was a few hundred!!!!!!

You should really keep more up to date on actual important news events and try to unhinge your face from the asses of the so-called leaders to whom you pledge your blind and unending support.

More of Obama manipulating Americans to get his way in DC.

Perhaps the clown should look into saving some money here:

The Government Accounting Office comes out with lists every year describing government waste, inefficiency, overlap and duplication of programs. If all of this government mismanagement were cleaned up, it would cover far more than the approximately $85 billion in long-term cuts required by Obama's sequester. However, that would take change and moving forward. But what we have is politics as usual in DC. Hope all you want, but nothing has changed and we are not moving forward.

    GAO High Risk List

Every two years at the start of a new Congress, GAO calls attention to agencies and program areas that are high risk due to their vulnerabilities to fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement, or are most in need of transformation.

    http://www.gao.gov/highrisk#t=0

Obama is USING Americans safety as a PAWN in a political battle. Just like he USED the deaths of innocent children at the hands of the mentally ill as PAWNS to try and take away our human right to self defense. Just like he USED natural disaster victims of Sandy as PAWNS to gain vote. (He had practice for that one, as he USED natural disaster victims of Katrina as PAWNS for political gain.

Do you see the trend? Obama USING people as PAWNS in his petty political games. That's all we are to him, PAWNS in a game of political chess.

It's very simple....Obama is intentionally trying to punish Americans for trying to curtail out of control spending. There is hundreds of billions that could be cut that could be cut that only Obama or Rep special interest groups would feel and in no way would hurt America at all. There are several websites that lists the govts wasteful spending.

Like a bully in the school yard, this is strictly designed to be like the Govt putting your arm behind your backs and make you scream "uncle".

Carbonite - Thank God. Its about time we see what smaller government looks like. Here's a suggestion though. Instead of purposefully finding cuts Obama knows will scare or piss off the people why doesn't he issue a statement that says...

"In order to do our Constitutionally required duty and be to better stewards of the people's money, we will first eliminate 14 layers of useless Undersecretaries and Assistant Directors who add nothing of value to the people's work. We will ruthlessly cut bureaucracy from YOUR government in order to streamline YOUR interactions with YOUR government while saving YOU billions of dollars without hurting anything. We will then require that all management staff take all of their furloughs before requiring a single front line worker from doing so. After all, that's what I care about most, working folks, isn't it?"

Has anyone noticed a trend here? Americans are being punished for having the audacity to demand that our government reign in its out of control spending.

How are we "being punished?" We asked for discretionary spending cuts, we're getting them.

Furloughs, unfulfilled contracts, job losses, and harsh choices are what come along with that. Don't fret, THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED!

If the bleeding heart Democrats want to save the US, then they will stop spending millions and billions overseas in aid to failing countries like Egypt and Syria.

I agree foreign aid should be cut if we're cutting agencies at home, but don't try and pretend like foreign aid is a remnant of "Democratic bleeding heart liberalism." The Republicans love them some foreign aid just as much as the D's, if not more so (at least when in power).

I wonder if this is revenge for the Obama admin being sued by ICE employees?

You can't tell me Obama, look the other way Napaltalino, etc. are not embarrassed that their being challenged by their own employees and want a little payback.

Then again ICE is being ordered not to enforce our laws anyways...

      http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/politics/2013/01/29/judge-immigration-agents-suing-obama-can-move-forward/

A federal judge ruled that nearly a dozen federal immigration agents can move forward with their lawsuit against their own bosses and even President Obama over change in enforcement policy that the agents argue prevent them from doing their jobs.

Federal Judge Reed O'Conner ruled on Friday Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents' case has legal merit. They argue their bosses essentially have forced them to look the other way and not enforce the law -- thus overstepping Congress by changing laws through directives rather than legislation.

The state of Mississippi joined the lawsuit against the administration but judge O'Conner dismissed the state from the lawsuit on Friday in the 35-page opinion.

The agents filed the lawsuit in October against the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, and ICE Director John Morton, to ask the courts to overturn last year's directive by Obama to suspend deportation proceedings and offer temporary work authorization to some immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children.

      No David.

      ICE is part of DHS.

      CBP is part of DHS.

But ICE and CBP are two different agencies. And CBP employees are not currently part of the ICE agents' lawsuit.

However, the furloughs at CBP are another result of unintended consequences of a seemingly 'good idea.' On paper, a small cut in funding should just mean fewer paperclips, in reality, it actually results in a weakness. And in the long run, this weakness will cost much more than we will save.

Obrudda...it's $85 billion cut in spending increases. Not a cut in current spending. This country has over $80 trillion, not billion, TRILLION in unfunded liabilities. Significant spending must be cut, otherwise our children and grand children are going to end up like Greece.

Do you remember who said this:

“The fact that we're here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. Leadership means 'The buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America's debt limit.”

“And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.

Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities.”

It was Senator Barack Obama, D-Ill, in a Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt, March 16, 2006

      HS,

Agreed. It is a cut in spending increases. That said, government agencies have been operating under continuing resolutions for half a fiscal year. Notification requirements necessitate additional delays before furloughs and other cuts can occur. So the decreased funding cannot be planned/allocated properly and will have to be accomplished in what amounts to less than five months in the fiscal year. Whose fault is that? Who cares. The result is a total cluster. Are there areas to cut? Absolutely. Will this allow these cuts to be done wisely? Of course not. It will be slash and burn with the line employees suffering the brunt. Not the right way to make cuts.

The 2% increase you speak of was a sunset of a temporary payroll tax deduction which was not renewed. i.e. it went back to what it was in the past. People speak of this as if this was a 2% increase out of nowhere. We were paying this 6.2% rate for Social Security only a couple years ago and got a temporary reduction to 4.2% which was never meant to be permanent.

Shouldn't all of Obama's stimulus spending have been temporary?

You know the $800 billion in 2009, the constant extensions of unemployment benefits, food stamps, etc.?

Why is it Obama can come out and say that everyone is going to have to give a little to get us out of this mess, everyone will have to feel a little pain, but as soon as its suggested the government will have to spend a little less to get us out of this mess, OMG the world is going to come to an end...

I forgot to mention how my health insurance premiums have gone up by 20% in the last four years.

Thank you for Obamacare and what a great job its doing bending the health care cost curve up.

Obamacare was written by Pelosi, Reid and health insurance and medical industry lobbyist. (Obama merely did the marketing.)

You were expecting something besides an increase in cost to the nation?

Remember you are talking about democrats. They dont understand words, just connect the dots. Every other word out of their mouths is "spend" well here you go!

      hs321-

Pelosi and Reid had NOTHING to do with the writing of that bill. It was forged by her underlings and the health insurance industry reps and they just put their chop on the bill when it came time to introduce it to the House floor. That old whore couldn't even tell you what was in it and even told reporters "you will have a chance to see what's in it after we pass it." THAT is NOT how it's supposed to work. Pelosi was either taking care of some old debts she owed to the healthcare industry or she got a kickback after she signed the bill.

But everything you said about the democRATS I concur with. The don't understand words, just connect the dots.

Clearly they failed home economics about how to balance a checkbook back in high school. Oh that's right; the liberal/progressive school boards removed that course from the high school curriculum or made it an elective instead of mandatory education...No wonder we are in the @!$%# storm that we are in.

      Democrats...SMH

Obama throwing a tantrum. We all know about the email sent out warning agencies that whatever they do...do NOT portray the cuts as lesser in severity than Obama wants the public to think. We also know it's a planned tactic to go after high profile spending in order to scare American citizens when much more wasteful, not essential cuts can be made. Never before have I seen a president of the United States act like such a cowardly little man-child. It's disgusting, and disturbing that anyone with half a brain would support these actions coming from the executive branch. Even some of my most liberal fiends are starting to really worry about what's going on. It's about time.

This is news? A friend who is a Border Patrol agent was notified early last month. (I don't know precisely what they told him, but what he told me was "a 40% pay cut and no schedule change".)

TRILLON Eygpt just got $60 BILLON . The list goes on. Aslong as we tolerate congress & the rest of the Bernie Madoff's in DC the more we will suffer. In fact Madoff is probably our Gov consultant.

Anyone ever really wonder what happens to all that drug money they intercept at the borders? Why not use it to minimize the effects of sequestration on border patrol? But they may make to much sense for Congress and the White House ... NEVERMIND.

Another smoke-screen from our leaders that have let the illegal Mexicans out of the jails, and have the boarders opened up to let more come into our country. The leaders will do anything to get more votes from the illegal Mexicans. The more that come, the more money they drain from all the states, and take more jobs from citizens. Big brother is getting bolder.

I think this is a plan that corporations and our government officials have agreed to let happen, it is cheap labor.
The corporations no longer have to hire Americans, that is why unemployment will not move downward, they have filled all the jobs with illegal aliens, big profits for corporations and they do not pay tax on them. I do not think anything is gone to change, they are not gone to enforce any illegal immigration laws, Americans will just have to suffer because as long as it profits big corporations no one else matters, not even the law.

For all you Obama lovers; The SEQUESTER WAS Obama's idea and NOW he's trying to weasel out and blame the Republicans for holding him to his word. Do wake up and try to find your brains before commenting.

The Government is NOT short of money; They could operate almost ALL year on the budget they already have; all that's happening is that instead of getting a 10% increase they are only getting an 8% INCREASE in their budgets.

It's ALL NOTHING but a Democrat/Obama LIE as usual.

two things puzzle me.........one - why is it that Washington says it wants to protect us from terrorist, and yet they are willing to cut border control workers? Border control workers prevent not only illegal immigrants, but most importantly, Terrorists from the middle east, from crossing the Mexican/American border? That is what I see happening, terrorists crossing our border with a dirty bomb, haven't they thought of that? two - Why does Washington fight background checks at gun shows and everywhere else where it is not required, to prevent terrorists from purchasing numerous guns and other ammo to kill Americans on American soil. Isn't anyone in Washington concerned about this? I consider these preventive actions, why wait until something happens to do something about it?

Obama is a much better person than the N Korean ruler, he is no oppressor and I don't see how he punishes the American citizens.........if anyone is guilty of that it is the right wing politicians, stripping Americans of freedoms and allowing big corporations and banks to control our government. Obama is limited to what he can do for all of us because the GOP prevents him from doing his job and fulfilling his promises.
