NEW YORK - A New York City man who allegedly fled a hit-and-run car crash that killed a young Orthodox Jewish family appeared before a Brooklyn judge on Thursday night to hear the charges that could put him in prison for life.
Julio Acevedo, 44, of Brooklyn, faces charges of criminally negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident, according to prosecutors. He is also being accused of reckless driving, assault and speeding.
If convicted, Acevedo faces 25 years to life in prison because of his prior convictions, prosecutor Gayle Dampf said. He is being held without bail.
The victims, Raizy and Nachman Glauber, 21, were members of an Orthodox Jewish enclave in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn. They were expecting their first child.
They were on the way to the hospital when their taxi was hit broadside by a gray BMW sedan, police said. The BMW driver fled the scene on foot.
The Glauber baby was delivered on Sunday by Cesarean section at Bellevue Hospital, where the mother had been pronounced dead on arrival, police said. The boy died early on Monday.

Family friends said the child's birth had been a ray of hope that was extinguished when the baby died of his injuries. They said Raizy Glauber was about six months pregnant and wanted to go to the hospital because she was not feeling well.
Acevedo, who has a lengthy criminal record, surrendered on Wednesday to New York City detectives in the parking lot of a convenience store in Bethlehem, Pa.
The meeting between the suspect and police had been arranged with the help of one of Acevedo's friends, New York City Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne said.
Witnesses to the Sunday morning crash said the BMW had been speeding, police said. The taxi was at a stop sign when the accident occurred, police said.
Before his surrender, Acevedo spoke by telephone to the New York Daily News. An article published on Tuesday said Acevedo had claimed he was fleeing gunshots when the accident occurred and that he fled the scene of the accident because he was afraid of being shot.

Have to admit, Acevedo is not a total idiot; he lawyered up, concocted a defense and arranged a safe surrender. His instinct for self-preservation is intact. Nonetheless, I'd bet he's not going to avoid a long prison sentence, unless the cops totally screw up their case. If he was DUI when the collision occurred, he's beaten that rap already by avoiding testing immediately after the accident. Bad lesson for future offenders.
Yes, Acevedo knows the best way to get arrested and tried in a criminal court. Practice makes perfect.
Still nothing about him being a twice deported illegal alien who was caught yet again a couple weeks before the latest 'accident' - and released again.
It wouldn't help the pro-illegal alien amnesty push if the poster boy for Mexican illegal alien scum gets that kind of airtime.

His Feb DUI arrest should have brought ICE but Bloomberg loves illegal aliens so he has instituted a sanctuary policy and won't let the police check with the feds who would have deported Acevedo's arse a 3rd time. This catch and release program lets illegal aliens stay in the US... they just make up a new name and start over w/o having to go to jail for their crimes.

leaving the scene , is easy to prove (misdemeanor;)Negligent Homicide, no witnesses, may be hard to prove, how many more are out there like him; he could not have a valid drivers license, so there is no insurance on the auto, even if the owner had insurance, allowing a un-licensed driver to operate the car, voids the policy.

Our criminal justice system is so pathetic. We have people in jail who are caught with pot, yet this type of career thug, drug dealing trash is allowed to walk the streets. Liberal judges and parole boards should be held accountable. They should show all of these animals redeeming qualities before they let them out; and if they commit another crime some type of punishment to those who let them out. We just sent the Syrian rebels $120 million. Maybe if we quit sending so much money to those who hate us, we can build many, many jails in desolate areas to house these animals for life.
Then again I would just shoot them if they are a repeat offender of violent crimes.
illegal immgrant....shoulda known this. Living in California, we see this quite a bit. Happened to me, but I survived. Drunk, uninsured "undocumented" immigrant hit me at a red light and totaled my car. Guy skipped across the border and I was stuck with replacing a car that was almost paid for, dealing with insurance companies, injuries and health bills. And he was in a Tiajuana bar drinking margaritas. I am willing bet my next paycheck that he is back in the US driving drunk in another city/state. Not to mention the car was unregistered and he was unlicensed. To prevent a "hit and run" situation I dialed 911 and said I was in an accident and having chest pains....emt and police were there in less than 2 mins.

Most Americans go to Mexico on vacation (as I've done in the past) and spend money which helps the Mexican economy.
Most Mexicans come to the US to take jobs and live undocumented (no taxes). They don't hesitate to use our services - medical being one example and I've seen this firsthand. Who is sticking it to whom???
I have a Mexican that lives near me and after his daughter got out of school she went back (2011) to Mexico to get all the family's paper work fixed so her parents could stay in the states. They had been here 18 yrs and he has worked at WDW the last ten. He got his green card when she got the paper work straight. She has a sticker on her car that says "YOU CAN'T DEPORT US ALL" and a Mexican flag hanging in the window of her car. She'll tell you too that she is Mexican not American.

Bottom line - he ran which makes it hit and run no matter what the cause. The impact threw a young pregnant woman underneath a tractor trailer and put the engine of the car hit in the lap of the young husband. The driver was knocked out. Acevedo ran. He can't run anymore. He's toast. It's just too bad this is all at the tragic expense of a nice young family.
I don't recall reading any reports which cite, for example, 'a born again Christian family', or 'Roman Catholics', or 'Shia Muslim', or even 'atheists'. The faith reference in this article is strange.

But if this were an Amish family it would be mentioned, right? Hassidic Jews are a distinct sect. And certainly in New York City dominate specific areas. This accident wiped out an entire young family in a particularly brutal fashion. That's why it got so much media attention. And her father is a big time player in the rabbinical community.

Right, why did we have to know if they were Orthodox Jews? Couldn't they have just stopped @ a young couple was killed / involved in a hit & run? Religion is unnecessary unless it is important to the story.

This tragedy could have been avoided if this animal was not given so many "chances" out in public. Really? I think undercharging. The charges listed were all fair, criminally negligent homicide is about as light as a homicide charge would get. I also want to add to the charges all the illegal activity involved in him getting that car. I guess or hope that will come later.
The defense should try to get this thing run through as a DUI. DUI murders are usually just given a slap on the wrist. I think the perfect murder is just to go get drunk and then run down whomever you hate. Two years later you are out of jail. That's a good deal.

For the devoutly religious (all faiths), most of this life is just preparation for the next life. God's command is to forgive and the devoutly religious take that command very seriously. What about the livery driver? He ran a stop sign and was not licensed as a livery driver. So to save a few bucks they hire an unlicensed driver to take them to the hospital? What about the choice they made to not buckle up? The livery driver is as guilty as this guy and also needs to be charged, this guy is guilty of a lot of things but homocide is probably over charging him. Had the livery driver NOT run the stop sign the accident would not have happened. BUT as long as they have him take him to the border and get rid of the garbage.

I didn't see detailed enough photos of the accident site to make a determination on my own, but according to police, he didn't run the stop sign but was waiting at it.
I'd also like to point out that pulling out from a stop sign is made extremely dangerous on a NYC street when the side traffic is doing 60, you may not see them coming as they are more than double the distance away as a car doing 25 would be to cause an accident. But that doesn't appear to be case here anyway.

I agree. People speed all the time. It's the fault of the cab driver who ran a stop sign. if you run a stop sign, you're playing russian roulette. it's probably the most common way of getting killed in a car. Running or misjudging the stop sign. Many people have been guilty of speeding. This guy just had the bad timing of doing that when someone was running a stop sign. I think he is guilty of negligent driving and leaving the scene of an accident and who knows dwi how does that play when he didn't take the breathylyzer? I think homicide is going too far. He may be a troublesome character and should be deported but I cut him some slack on the harsh charges. He is what he is and it sounds like he has always been that and the Law knew that and let him continue. It's the US and NY officials who let him get away with it that I reserve my harshest anger and judgement for. Hang them. Deport the guy and charge the cab driver with negligent driving etc. Ultimately it was an accident. Who here hasn't sped before? You've been luckier than him if you've never killed anyone.
So now he'll get to spend the rest of his life in the US. He'll be fed, allowed to have computer use, workout at a gym inside prison, doctor's bills will be paid, visits from family and friends, and he might even want to get a degree if he wants. His story might get on the ID channel or Dr. Phil. For an illegal, he's gonna be sitting pretty.

I would love to see the statistics on ethnic groups who are involved in hit and runs. Where I live 95% are espanic and there's a lot of hit and runs. Wonder how many billions this is costing us per year not to mention the loss of life.
I live in Orlando, second only to Tampa in staged accidents. Want to take a crack at the ethnicity of the majority of the people involved? When I was desperate for work, I worked at a personal injury law firm. The clients were all either Hispanic or Haitian, and a large percentage had been involved in MULTIPLE accidents. Pretty sure that getting into accidents and suing was how they made a living! I try so hard not to judge, but sometimes...
