Virginia loses 'a brave public servant': Veteran state trooper shot dead

Virginia State Police via AP

Hailed as a "hero," Master Trooper Junius Walker was shot dead on Thursday.

A Virginia State Police trooper was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Thursday, and a suspect was arrested after exchanging fire with another trooper, authorities said.

Master Trooper Junius A. Walker, 60, was shot multiple times, state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.

Walker, who was patrolling alone, called for backup after being fired upon just before 1:30 p.m. ET.

The second trooper arrived within two minutes and saw a male suspect firing into Walker's marked police vehicle, which was down an embankment off the southbound lanes of Interstate 85, Geller said.

The second trooper fired at the suspect, who fled into nearby woods. He was found nearby and was arrested before 2 p.m. The suspect was not immediately identified. Charges were pending.

“We're trying to determine if there was a second individual involved,” Geller said at a news conference near the scene in Dinwiddie County, just south of Richmond.

The scene of the fatal shooting of Master Trooper Junius Walker, off Interstate 85 in Virginia.

Geller said authorities found a weapon and were trying to determine if it was the one used in the shooting.

Gov. Bob McDonnell said Walker was a 40-year veteran of the state police.

“Virginia's public safety professionals are on the front lines every day protecting their fellow citizens from harm and pursuing those individuals whose actions put others in danger,” McDonnell said. “These men and women are heroes who place their lives on the line to protect their fellow Virginians.”

McDonnell expressed condolences to Walker's wife, two daughters and the rest of his family, friends and colleagues.

“Virginia has lost a brave public servant and hero,” McDonnell said.

There's going to be more to this story. You don't shoot a cop over a traffic ticket. They had to wanted for something or were moving drugs. RIP

YOU are incorrect, Marywhatever, some nutballs will shoot you over NOTHING! Maybe the shooter had some ammo, but didn't have money to pay a ticket fine - there are tons of reasons people go around the bend!

It's too bad about this man, he appears to have been a credit to his community when many of his race are not - I am sad for his family and friends - the good people we need to keep!

Tag,

Race does not fit into this story whatsoever.... I can't believe you mentioned that.

Rip Mr. Walker and thank you for the 40 yrs of putting your life on the line each and every day....

Mary "could" be correct. It's all speculation.

Here in NJ, it's illegal to have front tinted windows. Not "too" tinted anyway because Troopers were pulling people over and couldn't see inside the vehicle.

Sometimes people would shoot the Troopers as their window was going down.

Man, there are some really Fk'd up people in this world....

I agree with everything you say except for your condescending remark "he appears to have been a credit to his community when many of his race are not". Whether you know it or not, Black people certainly do not need your stamp of approval. You sound like the idiots who've been brainwashed by the media into believing firearms miraculously leap up and kill people without the intervention of people; that most black men are engaged in criminal activities and black women are indolent. Although it's gradually changing, the fact of the matter is white men hold the purse strings of this country and they carry the same condescending stupid attitude as yours into the job market place. The racism experienced by Chris Dorner is common but he didn't know how to handle it. You're no more a representative of Caucasians than I am of the Afro-Americans nor do you represent the best of humanity. Thinking you're superior to anyone simply because the melanin genetically expressed in your ancestors was less so they could deal with a lack of sun, you aren't worth the space you occupy let alone the words I've expended on your sorry piece of flesh. Go read some books.

Sometimes I think that these perpetrators feel like they are just shooting at "the police" without really realizing that each one of them are an actual real person with wives, children, siblings, parents, etc who love them and need them. Then again, maybe they just don't care either way. Very sad.

High honors and respect to the trooper, and sincere condolences to his family. RIP.

Wait. You do know that you can get a traffic ticket and just don't pay it. Then you have a warrant for your arrest, but then this wouldn't be just a traffic ticket. That is what I'am saying. He wasn't just worried about getting a speeding ticket.

Have you heard of Sovereign Citizens? They are a group that doesn't believe in any government authority whatsoever. Just Google them and see for yourself. They don't believe states have the right to issue a drivers license, police have the right to stop them, etc. They do believe they have the right to "defend themselves" against authorities they do not recognize. There have been police shootings similar to this one involving Sovereign Citizens. Maybe this guy was one of them or a similar anti-government group. Just a thought.

Logic isn't a talent with you is it? If he HADN'T had a gun, the outcome would certainly have been the same. And, the NRA never said that or implied it. They are only advocating that the CHANCES are greater if you have a firearm to protect yourself. Oh, hell, why am I wasting my time...

How very tragic another servant willing to put his life on the line, has lost it.There is such a shortage of good people willing to stick their neck out to make sure you and I have a safer life. I know there are lots of folks out there who don't believe any police officer is good.

However in a world that is so full of those who choose to prey on the helpless and innocent, there really are so many good law enforcement personnel. In fact, over 700,000 in this vast nation. I can guarantee you won't hear about most of the good that gets done. Only the bad cop, wrongful death shootings that with today's instant media access makes it look like they are everywhere.

May this officer's family get all the support they will need in the coming days, and more people try to see the good such dedicated men and women do for their communities.Perhaps even thank them if they get a chance. It isn't a job most folks would ever want to do.Most do it because they really do care and want to help their communities be safer.Sometimes it comes at the terrible price this dedicated soul paid.Rest in Peace Master Trooper Junius A. Walker, Final Roll Call taken, Dismissed.

It's sarcasm. Geez, folks, get your detectors adjusted.

The gun fondlers' favorite argument in favor of having every last person in the country heavily armed at all times is the absurd notion that this will protect our freedoms, and enable us to resist tyranny. Tragedies like this one show just how ridiculous this idea is. Having all sorts of people packing heat just leads to senseless killings.

Police, judges, lawyers, and prisons are all part of a money making enterprise who stays in business by putting American citizens into the electronic plantation. If we incarcerate more people per capita than any other nation what does that indicate about all the citizens that get harassed on a daily basis just to keep the machine flush with cash?

I have never been arrested or in jail, but I have no respect for the police. Just like they think everyone is lying to them, I think the police are always lying to cover up their criminal behavior.

To the "good" police...start getting rid of the bad ones. You have a serious PR problem if average everyday citizens think you are just as bad as the criminals.

It is true that there is occasionally corruption in law enforcement wolfen, but look around you. People are dying due to drugs, speed, and the lack of regard for their fellow citizens or the sheer refusal to take responsibility for their own actions. So how do you expect law enforcement to believe anything that is told to them? They are constantly being shot at by thugs who just don't like authority, and risk their lives on mere traffic stops. I have been stopped for no reason before, but I have found if one keeps their mouth shut and speaks respectfully to the officer, they will listen nine times out of ten. There's an easy solution to the problem. Don't break the law. I don't always agree with them, but the fact is, we would be much worse off without them. My prayers and thoughts go out to this officer and his family. The saddest part of the article read, the suspect has been arrested. His/her life will continue, even if it is in prison. This family lost their loved one forever because someone didn't like authority. Sad.

Wolfen, the quality of our law enforcement officers directly reflects the quality of the pool of people available to be chosen from. Increase the quality (morals, judgement, education, etc.) of the pool of potential officers and you'll increase the quality of officer. Civilian law enforcement is NOT an occupying force, it is US! It all starts with society as a whole.

In other words, start with the man you see in the mirror every morning.

This particular hat was adopted by the VSP back in the late 80s/early 90s. Previously, they had worn a Stetson hat. If I remember correctly, the change over was due to the wish of the Dept. to be uniform with other SPs/HPs throughout the country.

We are living in a society where there are a significant number of individuals that have absolutely no regard for the life of another person.

Police lay their lives on the line every day that they step out of their homes in uniform. I'm always puzzled by the haters that spew their hatred whenever a cop is injured or killed. They should be thanking whatever they believe in that there are still people willing to do this.

Walker was a dedicated officer - 40 years is a long time to serve at a job that usually offers retirement after 20 years. An officer with that seniority should have been performing administrative/managerial duties, not patrolling alone. There is a valid reason for the 20-year retirement. This dangerous job requires alertness and quick reactions, plus the ability to chase down young thugs.

In Virginia, Troopers patrol alone in general. Occasionally, they can be seen with 2 in one car. BTW, he didn't have to chase this murderer. Age wasn't a factor. This would have happened to a 24 year old Trooper just as easily.

I understand the role police play in society but lets not build them up so much that they are above the law. We have seen more than a few instances of above the law behaviour. RIP non the less.

Really? So what you are now focusing somehow on your image of bad cops instead of the service of a man who for 40 years did something that you probably would never have the guts to do? How is honoring this man holding him "above the law"? At 60 years old the fact that he was doing this job was an amazing testament to his character and stamina. Call me when you are 60 and tell me how you are doing. Lets not forget who the guilty person is. The one with the gun who took innocent life for NO good reason. A father, a husband, a grandfather, a public servant. These families live with this fear all the time. There are bad apples in every profession does not mean you have to bring it into the conversation.

ddarkangel, get over yourself. You know absolutely nothing about me. We all live with this fear all the time. You walk out your door you can be dead. Police are nothing special in that regard. Except they get guns to defend themselves.

this guy shot a cop in his car in broad daylight. the police did their job & caught him. The COURT will give some token sentence and then they will RELEASE THIS PERSON back to the streets. HOW are law abiding and helpless citizens supposed to process this!? If this guy has NO FEAR AND NO MERCY with cops, what chance do WE have!? what sense does this make?

give him the same sentence he gave this public servant and make this country safer by one

wicked, Calm down, maybe eat something. There isn't a chance the killer of this cop will ever walk the streets again.

The suspect has been charged with Capital Murder. In Virginia, Capital Murder of a police officer carries the death penalty.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Master Trooper Walker, his family, his friends, and his brothers and sisters in law enforcement.

As a Virginian, I'm proud of his dedication and saddened at his sacrifice.
