Storm dumps two feet of snow on parts of Northeast

More than 20 inches of snow fell on parts of New England and waves pounded the shoreline as the latest winter storm hit a region already battered several times since October. Weather Channel Meteorologist Eric Fisher reports.

New England residents hunkered down Friday as a late-season storm brought two feet of snow to some areas before moving out to sea Friday afternoon.

The storm also brought high winds that battered Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Long Island, the Weather Channel reported. A winter storm warning remained in effect for the region through 1 p.m., with snowfall expected to lessen through the afternoon. Some parts of central Massachusetts and Connecticut could stand to close out the blustery day with nearly two feet of fresh snow, the National Weather Service predicted in an increase over earlier estimates.

“We are watching a conveyor belt of wave after wave of snow coming in over the Atlantic,” Alan Dunham, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told The Associated Press.

In Massachusetts, Quincy got 24.9 inches, Foxboro had 24.7 inches, Holden reported 24.4 inches and Worcester had 22.8 inches, the National Weather Service reported. Tolland, Conn., got 22.5 inches.

A seaside house on Plum Island, about 40 miles north of Boston, was listing at a 45-degree angle after being battered by waves, WHDH reported.

“I’ve owned the house for a long, long time,” homeowner Stephen Bandoian told WHDH in a phone interview from Florida. “It was a great home, it was a great place, and now it’s gone.”

The accumulation of wet snow on trees and power lines – combined with gusty winds – led to isolated power outages. About 12,000 residents were without power on Friday, Connecticut Light & Power reported. Massachusetts utility provider NStar reported 2,845 outages and National Grid said 5,364 were without power on Friday afternoon. Hundreds of Connecticut schools closed or delayed openings.

A storm system stretching from the Dakotas to the Florida Panhandle is predicted to bring snow to the mid-Atlantic states.

Power on Boston’s Tobin Bridge was knocked out Friday morning, according to WHDH. Traffic was not affected, but people were stuck in the bridge’s elevators, the station reported. The state put 2,800 snow-removal trucks and plows out to clear roadways, transportation secretary Richard Davey told the Boston Globe.

“It’s pretty bad out,” homeowner Steve Smith told NBC Connecticut. “I had trouble getting out of my driveway today.”

The weather meant a change of footwear for Lisa Parisella of Beverly, Mass., where six inches was on the ground early Friday. “I was thinking, March, ready to take out the sandals, and I’m taking out the boots again,” she said.

Commuters slid into work on wet, sloshy snow in New York and New Jersey. Central Park in Manhattan had 4 inches of accumulation late Friday morning, the Weather Channel reported, as residents of Passaic County, N.J., dug out from 7 inches of snow. The Bronx received 7 inches and parts of Westchester County were hit with more than a foot.

More than 148 flights had been canceled for New York’s LaGuardia airport, 119 at Newark Liberty International, and 101 at Logan in Boston as of 9:45 p.m. Friday, according to airline tracker Flight Aware.

The weather was forecast to turn milder over the weekend, with meteorologists saying that temperatures on Saturday could break 50 degrees in the tri-state area. Highs would hover around the low 40s in Boston, the Weather Channel predicted.

The storm swept through the Midwest and up from the Mid-Atlantic earlier in the week, taking its toll in several states. A Virginia man died after his car slid off an icy road, and two North Carolina boaters remained missing offshore.

NBC News’ Jason Cumming and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

That stuff in the picture that is coming in waves is awfully wet for snow.

Wet, so it can be turned into lethal ice. Divine revenge. Bad weather used to be called "acts of God" but now it is attributed to "Mother Nature" which, in turn should always have been called "Uncle Nature". Nurturing not! Survival of the fittest, yes! Humans seem to be better at naming video games.

That picture is from yesterday, which we got a lot of the wet snow in that area (I live not too far from there). It turned to the white fluffy snow overnight. I'm not even in the zone to get the most snow, and we've got about 6 or 7 inches on the ground right now, and it's still snowing pretty heavily. But it's pretty typical for New England for this time of the year.

Same storm that disappointed Washington a couple days ago, making another pass at New England. Lots of snow predicted, nothing but cold rain mixing from time to time with a little snow. And nasty wind.

So far nothing worth being called a snowstorm this entire season in immediate Washington D.C. area.

Well, first of all...New Englanders do not "hunker down," but this is a Texas phrase, and actually used by my ex-husband all of the time - not just some of the time. He uses that catch phrase all of the time. So, that causes me to wonder about the validity of this story OR that New England wants to discourage some people from returning home - which I think is what is REALLY going on here with these ridiculous news stories.

      But, I might be wrong.

And again - I might be right on the money.

We'll have to "wait and see".

My buddy, Richard Tracy, an investigator with the NH Attorney General's office will let us know the real "climate" facts, I'm sure.

If they build houses on stilts..expect winds to blow it down!

"Hey AlGore!...... can we have our light-bulbs back?"

And it's 55 degrees in Wyoming today, I was out without a coat at 8:00am. This weather for the east coast is not normal, normally they are already planting gardens and we here in Wyoming are usually still shoveling snow at this time of year, so NO steve, you can't have your light bulbs back. Well if you are stupid enough to want to use a light bulb that only lasts a few months then be my guest, you just got ripped off. Watch a documentary called The Light Bulb Conspiracy. It's about how light bulb manufactures got together in the early 20th century and conspired to shorten the life of bulbs so they could increase profit. There is a bulb at a fire station in california that has been burning, non-stop, for 100 years now. It was made prior to the light bulb cartel conspiring to RIP IDIOTS LIKE YOU OFF.

          ---------

Not sure if you had a "moment" when you felt the need to educate us on your ex-husband's favorite quotes but here's the facts:

Some areas south of Boston (within 20 miles) received 16", some areas north of Boston (25+ miles) received 12" of snow, that house on Plum Island DID collapse and IS headed into the ocean, west of boston got up to 18" of snow. The snow is light on top and heavy down below (i.e. it was a rain/snow mix yesterday and a fluffy mix today), the tobin bridge DID lose power and just about every district except for Boston cancelled school. And, yes we are all expecting it to be fully melted by sometime late next week as the warmer weather is set to arrive.

So, just curious- what the He&^ll are you talking about when you say "ridiculous story" and "New Englanders want to discourage people from returning home? All of these things DID HAPPEN over the last 36 hours.

Speaking of the New England part of our country... Does anyone remeber the damage form Sandy????

You know the one the media like NBC beamed with pride and reported like it was the second comming, when Obama extorted photo ops with Chris Christie to help get elected, where Obama PROMISED extreme speed in aiding those hurt bad by Sandy!!!!!!!!!!

Well where is NBC's coverage now, six months later, when NO aid from FEMA has made it to the area and it looks like NONE is going to get there anytime soon!!!!!!!!!!

Where is the media outrage??????? Where is the help-the-homeless peoples rage, where is ANY NEWS at all or anyhelp at all coming from anybody!!!!!!!!!!

Seems like as soon as the NEWS???? media got their pusy wetting photos of HERR Obama THAT THEY WERE DONE with the people, their plight, their deaths, their desease or any other bad thing which happened to our fellow human beings!!!!

Ah well, as long as the Dictator-In-Cheif was able to fool the people long enough, so HE can stuff socialist policies up our arses, they of the media have done their jobs!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea it is bush fault again, I guess you didn't get the memo. You must remember that Dumbocrat treat the peeps who vote for them like well shix. Just look at any city if you need more proof. NJ, Ct, my home state of NY votes 70% for the Dumbos and Christie is by far the exception as a Republick. So they promise things will get better, education, crime and poverty. And the only things that get better is they keep getting re elected the teachers, cops, firemen, toll takers keep getting phat pay checks and more benefits.

Where do you get your 'facts' from, Will?

As of January 21, FEMA has already completed repairs on 11,800 residential units, and started work on about 1,900 others.

Some homeowners chose to decline help from FEMA and arrange repairs on their own (about 3,000), which leaves fewer than 7,000 residences still waiting for help.

So out of 20,700 severely damaged/destroyed homes, 57% have already been completely repaired, another 9% are being fixed as we speak, and 34% are still in line. That's as of January 21 - 12 weeks after Sandy.

                Sheesh.

Got time to tell a true tale, speaking of traveling to the wrong place. A guy I know was asked to relieve the suffering of his best friend and companion and could not do it himself. So, "Steve" and a buddy drank some liquid courage and did the favor. Next day the guy says "when are you coming over"? "We did, we left him by the hog barn" "Ummm... I don't have a hog barn". True. Ooops.

That is why I live in the USVI now. No more worry about that white filth I had to put up with in OH. Record low back in '98 or '99 is 59º, record high is 98º. Nice balmy 70-79º average temp, hehe. Come visit St. Crois any time.

BTW, anyone else wonder why anyone would build a house (especially a 3 or 4 story one) right on a break wall as shown in that photo. They are asking for constant problems. Hate to see the insurance on those properties.

As mentioned previously the weekend and libations (drinks in some cultures!) begins here just like the weekends - Friday at noon - that is, unless Friday is a holiday and then festivities commence at noon, Thursday!

Scooter, I like the thought that drinking cool libations only on days that end in "Y" also - Salud!!!

People need to go back to 3rd grade geography. New Jersey is NOT a part of New England.

While parts of the coast of CT, RI and MA were damaged by Hurricane Sandy, the media is only focussing on NY and NJ.

Maybe that's because they are the only ones whining?

                      Just a guess.

Oh, and with about 1 foot of snow, it a great storm, with a possible one more foot coming? Go to the Northern states of the mid-west and ask the American people there if that is a storm. They will tell you "NO, IT'S WINTER."

But then some people have to be reminded that it does snow at winter. And we realize the East Coast people think everything starts and ends on the East Coast. That is why so many of us make fun at you people.

You get my vote for the most A$$ININE string of comments for the day. Governor Christie is not that bad of a guy and seems to actually care about his people. As for former President Bush any faults or failings that he might have I highly doubt that he was practicing genocide on NOLA.

Good grief get a grip.............Genius - lolzzz. Governor Christie seems like the type that might actually understand compromise and the art of the deal. It would be nice to work together for ALL Americans not just a little over half. People like you and Freaky Red Head give us a bad name.

Global warming predicts MORE SNOW (more warmt means more evaporation and those warm, more energetic systems move north dumping snow) and shorter winters. Better find a rant grounded in reality, instead of your own opinions. Until its warmer than abput 1 or 2, the extra humidity falls as snow, as winters get shorter it will eventually fall as more rain.

It's only 120 degrees in Austrailia right now, where summer on this earth is right now. Expect the same this summer for this part of the hemisphere. Oh I forgot you tea party nuts don't know what a hemisphere is. If you know anything about global warming (which you don't) it brings hotter summers and colder winters - stupid.

Glad to see my fellow NYers and New England getting hammer this winter with snow. You all vote for the Dumbocrats who tell you it is man made global warming, and most of you agree. Every weather event is man made global warming, even though last spring, summer and fall were cool, the winter has been a killer, but you still beleive. And the best part as you drive, and shovel, and the heating bill goes up as you go to work to pay the outragous taxes here. The vile and corrupt teachers who have brainwashed 2 generations with this bs, are sitting home with another day off on you the sucker taxapayers. Enjoy the rest of the day.

The weather meant a change of footwear for Lisa Parisella of Beverly, Mass., where there were six inches on the ground on Friday morning. “I was thinking, March, ready to take out the sandals, and I’m taking out the boots again,” she said.

This is obviously either a person who hasn't lived in New England very long, or someone who has and is "overly optimistic" (I'm trying to be kind here).

Agreed, I've lived in Massachusetts my whole life, and I can't remember a March that was sandals weather. April maybe... but never March. We've gotten snow as late as the beginning of May up here. This isn't out of the ordinary.

“We are watching a conveyor belt of wave after wave of snow coming in over the Atlantic,” Alan Dunham, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told the Associated Press.

so hit the conveyor's stop button. oh wait let me guess your union says you cant only a qualified operator...right?

Alan Dunham, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told the Associated Press. “The morning commute will definitely be a challenge.”

And the deviates from the normal challenging commute just how?

It's just a normal winter. Even with global warming, we will have some normal winters. And this was a highly variable snowstorm. I have about 3 inches of snow max and there's nothing more coming down. Ten miles south of me they had 6 inches.

And to put global warming of 2 degrees in perspective, the mean temperature of Portland ME is about 6 degrees colder than the mean temperature of Boston. This is according to 1996 statistics published by NOAA.

What's this - snow? in the wintertime? NO - it can't be! So sick of all the whiners telling us all storms are worse, temperatures are hotter, toilets are plugging up much more often than they used to. Live your life and quit the whining!

yeah ray why don’t you tell that to the person whose house that is who now has to take her four kids that she's been raising on her own for the last two years and move into some scummy-hotel on the coast that she'll have to battle with the insurance company to pay for six years down the road after her case setlles, i wonder if its a big deal for her you douche. this is a major weather-event that's affecting tens of millions of people so yeah it is a big deal and if you've got a issue with the fact tat it's beign reported and peoplea re worried about their well-0beings because of it then you are not only insenstivive but unbelievably petty. how about you go focus on bringing down your status from "morbedily obese" to just "obsese" and stop complaining about useless things on this news website or maybe go down to the affected areas and lend a hand so you can see for yoursellf why this is a major issue you benign-dumpster.

But some people just think when they get a foot or so of snow the world comes to an end. The ones I feel sorry for are the ones in the upper northern part of the mid-west. They get the snow, and the very cold temps, and you never hear them whine like the ones further east do.

hey sally where in the article are people "whinning"? They're saying how their day will change as a result of the storm in a very matter-of-fact way and that's what makes this a news story you cynical-pitch, no one's saying how could this be happening or anything like that they're just dealing with it and the fact that you think they need recognition to confirm their struggles is completely douchebaggish of you. the only one here who needs to be commended for anything is nbc news website for being open-minded enough to let you on here because i'd never let you onto my website under any circumstances you're too dellusional and scare away reasonable-minded people with your inscesent and coonstitance unreasonable berating.

Some people are really STUPID, building next to the beach, next to rivers and creeks, and on hillsides, all disasters waiting to happen. Then they want the govt (FEMA) to bail them out.

Yet you all "claim" to follow him. You're all so pathetic.

You do realize that many of these houses were not built this close to the ocean originally. Due to storms, the beaches and dunes have been eroded to the point where many of them are in danger.

Also, if the guy has 2 houses, he probably isn't too worried about Working citizens bailing him out. You do know that these houses are not cheap on the coast, right?

HAPPILY RETIRED, You said just what I've been thinking. Building houses so close to areas where the water is getting closer doesn't seem rational. Guess people are still denying global warming and the fact that low lying areas are going to be in the ocean sooner than later. Feel sorry for the people who have lost their homes.
