8 school buses stolen in Chicago, scrapped for parts

Eight school buses were stolen overnight and cut apart for scrap on Chicago's South Side, police said.

The buses were stolen from the Sunrise Bus company yard on the 10000 block of South Torrence Avenue and taken to SRV Metal Scrapper, 3405 S. Lawndale Avenue. Helicopter video showed a large pile of scrap against the side of a building at the yard.

Portions of the obliterated yellow buses were seen strewn among seats and other parts.

Three people reportedly were arrested Friday after officers tracked the buses to the yard via GPS devices on board the vehicles.

LOL! I'm betting these three never saw the inside of a school bus. I'm betting more the three combined can't spell GPS! :)

now they should go after the scrap yard and relatives of these scum bags and seize all their property and sell it to buy new school buses.

but the pussy's wont and the TAXPAYER will pay for it !

we need to change the laws :

You steal = we take all your stuff and your families

you kill = death NOW not in 25 yrs

Agreed Mike. Seriously, if you were working at the scrap yard and saw 8 buses pull in, in somewhat good condition with no paperwork to back it up, would you really pay these crooks?

The inside of the short bus, maybe. The one with the black tints and metal grates over the windows.

Neighbor city had a DPW worker stealing street signs and scrapping them for cash (yea he got caught on video and the union sued and got him 9months backpay and his job back, but anyhow) so I have to wonder if this was an 'inside' job.

Way to go Mike - imagine an outrageous fantasy scenario and then rant against your own creation. The busses were privately owned, so the TAXPAYERS are not paying anything. I like your strict interpretation of the Constitution too, seizing all property from the family of a thief. This is the USA you know, not N Korea where they punish 3 generations of a family when one of them commits a crime.

Went camping at a state park in my beloved MN. a couple years ago, VW van all spray painted up psychedelic with "magic bus" painted on the side, young couple obviously in love. You? Us and Them is using lyrics from "The End". unfortunate, but even more relevant in today's world. Have a good one.

I wonder if they were graduates of the Obama School of Community Organizing.

They did after-all organize the theft and did accomplish the task as a "community".

Nothing coming out of that city surprises me.

Only three people arrested? Last time I checked you would need a driver for each bus. That's at least eight people involved. And what about the scrap yard who bought the buses and cut them up? Way more than three people were involved in this. WAAAAY more!

Obviously those arrested were at the scrap yard when the busses were located in the morning. The drivers were no longer there..

Eight school buses, all from a private school bus company, is a weird thing to steal. There can't be that big of a market for "hot" school bus parts. It's also a pretty high-profile heist just to recover the scrap value. Could be a case of insurance fraud.

Most likely stolen for the value of the scrap metal and the parts - engines, transmissions, tires , rims , etc. The used parts business is a multi- billion dollar business.

Spring is in the air. Pols will be in need of spare bus parts as the campaigning season gets into full swing. Not everyone campaigning gets to use taxpayer funded transportation.

Typical Chicago. Nobody checked the VIN numbers to see if the vehicles were stolen -- or knew they were and didn't care. If Obama had a son, he's be just like one of these bozo's.

Those yellow school buses are glorified panel trucks. Take the cargo box and add some seats and window, and you have a school bus. Only the best for the nation's children.
