A Pennsylvania high school senior faces assault charges after he allegedly broke a school nurse’s hip while in a drunken rage.

Since Wednesday was an exam day, seniors were allowed to arrive late at Pennsville Memorial High School, Salem County.

Pennsville Township Police told NBC10’s Chris Cato that the 17-year-old and his friend Manpreet Singh, 18, used the opportunity to get drunk.

The 17-year-old, who wasn’t identified because he is a minor, began to act belligerent in class.

"They took him from the classroom and took him to the principal's office," said police Lt. A.J. Cummings.

Sources told Cato that when the boy was confronted with a Breathalyzer test that he went nuts and shoved the principal. He then allegedly burst out the office door, knocking down school nurse Marilyn English.

English, 68, suffered a broken hip and remained in South Jersey Healthcare Elmer Hospital Friday night.

"I'm doing as well as can be expected for the type of injury it is," English said by phone.

She told Cato that the boy never stopped. Police sources said he kept going right out of the building. Police said they later picked him up around 11:20 a.m. but not before he kicked an officer.

The 17-year-old faces three assault charges, disorderly conduct and alcohol charges while Singh, who police say supplied the alcohol, faces an alcohol charge.

The Pennsville School District had no comment on what discipline both teens could face.

Neither teens' parents wanted to talk to NBC10. The minor’s mother slammed the door on Cato and Singh’s mother had no comment.

As for the school nurse hurt during the teen’s alleged rage, English told Cato that she hoped the action of a couple students didn’t reflect on the majority of students saying this was an "isolated" and "abnormal" incident.

I agree. Why would you get drunk and go to school to take tests. Why didn't he just skip school.

No, the kid does not deserve to get shot. But, waking up in the intensive care ward in traction might be a shock to the little sh!t! Not a very good idea to kick a policeman that is probably not thrilled about your belligerence in the first place, especially when you broken the hip of one of their female senior citizens. Yes, smooth move on your part slick! Real genius!

"....began to act belligerent in class."

Most high school students should know that "belligerent" is an adjective. They should also know that an adverb would be correct in this sentence.

"...began to act belligerently." How did he act? He acted belligerently, or with belligerence.

The reporter began to write ignorant.

One time when I was in high school a kid brought a jug of Spanada. It was a hot day at lunchtime. 7 or 8 or kids got tipsy. We were just sent home. The principal was trying to keep from laughing. This was in California.

If there's a lawsuit they should go after the kids parents and the parents of the kid who gave him the liquor for every cent they've got. That's the only way to affect people like this who will hurt others without caring a bit, in their purses. Too often when going after the deep pockets the actual perpetrator gets off scott free and since they don't care about anyone else they'll offend again. When a person has no conscience and willingly hurts others there's no other deterent than their money, something that will get through the wall of selfishness. If that were the norm fewer crimes would be committed.

It's not an excuse and he should be arrested, but rage disorders are so prevalent in this generation. By disorder, I mean a complete lack of fear of consequences and a will to confront people who can obviously take them. It's so unusual. There also doesn't seem to be an effective treatment for it, sadly. By treatment, I mean medication. I'm sure people will post other, rather uneducated treatments.

That's because they no longer respect or fear their parents. They are taught that they don't have to. My mom and dad would have kicked my ass if I had done something like this, they would be the first ones to turn me in and tell the judge to throw the book at me. But now days they are babied and coddled and told that they are "special". My dad was the best, I will always love and respect him, I miss him terribly. I am 60 years old and still would not even consider swearing in front of my mother.

It's not a "rage disorder," angelikowoah. It is complete lack of respect for any authority figure, and a sense of rebellion against.........I would be willing to bet that he doesn't even understand who/what he is rebelling against. Forget anger management drugs. Behavioral science people tell us that these types of behaviors are pretty much learned by the age of 5 - 6 years old. His family/friends called it "cute" when he had a tantrum. He was told that he had unlimited freedom to do anything to anyone whenever he chose to do so. And, this is the outcome. Doesn't happen to all.....but there will be some who take it to extreme measures. I feel sorry for all......especially those hurt. And, I feel sorry for the young person who did those things. He is headed towards a long life of problems. ("Who broke the child?")

              angelikowoah,

Allow me to posit what you may consider to be an "uneducated treatment" (i.e., not medication).

I cannot speak to this individual case, but it appears to me that the "disorders" that people cite are not medical conditions at all. Rather, they are due to a lack of discipline, which in turn is due to a lack of parenting. It is much easier to medicate than it is to educate. It is much easier to blame than to change. Chemical discipline is not always the answer.

Because teaching self discipline to children has become passe. Modern parents think they can just let their kids "happen", actually an excuse for lazy parenting. They grow up and have no self control; they continue to essentially throw childish temper tantrums throughout their adult lives.

              Hi, db...

I so rarely disagree with you... but....

I've seen teens from good homes with good "raising" go off like this. Explosive, with no really good reason or trigger. In one instance it was because the girl knew the zero tolerance policy of the school for having a cell phone on the bus at the time was going to get her kicked off the basketball team.

She had simply forgot to leave it in her locker, had attended the away game, got back to school, was about to step off the bus, when it rang out. She tried to talk the coach down but she was unsuccessful and on school grounds right beside the bus she went wild. Never had a discipline problem in her life, but she loved basketball (wasn't that good at it but loved to play and socialize with her friends).

Someone called police, she was sent to detention...

Of course, this boy was drunk at school, a definite no--no, but as to these rages, I'm still leaning toward chemicals in our food supply over the last three or four decades producing problems with impulse control in brain function of the last few generations. Look at the bizarre killings we've had, the mutilations... all younger type people, not old fogeys like me.

An effective treatment would be a butt whipping and grounding. Time out and counting to 5 or 10 does NOT work. Hasn't anyone figured that out yet?

Of course it would help if parent's were present, actively engaged in their childrens lives and teach them that actions have consequences.

Sadly, they will probably blame the school for "picking" on their little boy and asking him to take a breathalyzer. Geez a loo......it's time to wake up and start parenting and stop medicating just because kids are "active". That's the way kids are! You can tell where everything is going wrong all the way from the child throwing the fit at the store because they aren't getting what they want all the way to the school nurse with a broken hip.

Parents should not be punished for the behavior of "children" who are 17 or 18 years old. Just expel these two from school and let them do some time in jail.

Give me a break homesick wanker your trying to tell me you never drank an ounce of alcohol while you attended high school, not necessarily during school but during the years you attended. This is somehow the the parents fault. You must not be a parent to make a statement blaming the parents for their teenage kids actions. For all we know the child has caring loving parents. The actions of children nowadays are induced by peers, depressing music, bad eating habits, video gaming, bad television, the list goes on. Social Dysfunctional Disorder I think I just created a new disorder, SDD. It is a shame how our society acts upon our children but we do our best to correct and teach them, unfortunately us parents are at war with opposing forces such as greed, selfishness, sex, the media, and this list goes on and on as well. We have come upon an age where protecting and sheltering our children from these forces can no longer happen without solitary confinement. It is a sad world we now live in a self destructive world at that.

Psychologists would have us believe that we learned nothing about parenting over the several millennia of man's existence and have recently changed everything to make it "right." We aren't allowed to lay a hand on our children anymore. When I was young we were afraid of our parents and our teachers and we grew up with respect for others. If we got in trouble in school we were given a good lickin' at home. Psychologists are full of crap, one comes up with a theory based on very limited research and they all jump on board like a bunch of lemmings. Recovered memory therapy, which planted false memories in people's minds, tore families apart and ruined countless lives. This is no longer used, a tacit admission that they were wrong, yet not a single psychologist was charged for the lives they destroyed with their arrogance and stupidity.

The use of recovered memory was not nearly as prevalent as you suppose. It was and still is a minor subset of behavioral thought. Of much greater import, because it came to guide our nation's economic direction, is supply side economics. Talk about a bunch of lemmings blindly following individuals supporting a completely misguided and unproven theory.

@Leroy......I remember when I was a kid, (I'm 68 now), about a Psychologist stating that divorce was no big thing, because kids were strong, and could handle it. Gee Dave, you sound like part of the problem.

Allright, we all hate the kid. And he certainly acted like a total jerk. But do you remember what it was like the first few times you got drunk? I do, and I did some thoroughly stupid stuff, which embarrasses me to think about now. Luckily, nobody got hurt. But the voice of reason and common sense completely vanished. That's what happened here, except, unfortunately, someone did get hurt.

I get your point but this situation is different. I think nearly all of us have a drunk teenager story because even if you don't abuse alcohol the first few times you drink it, it really affects you because you aren't used to it. This is different because he got drunk in the morning, not at night at a bar or party with friends, he was drinking before a test he knew he had to take, not during leisure time, and he became so violent that he seriously injured an elderly woman and attacked several others, including a police officer. There is nothing about this situation that has to do with normal teen experimentation with alcohol. (actually from the sound of things I think this kid has been drinking for quite a while and no one knew it until now).

I don't know about you, Mis Mann, but I never committed a violent assault on anyone when I'd been drinking.

A long stint in a real rehab (not one of those weeks in a spa....) followed by jail time might be a start.

Hope they charge the parents of the kids. Most of this behavior is crappy parenting, if parents were held responsible for their kids' action a lot of this nonsense would be avoided. Kids who are raised right don't do this stuff.

That reminds me of a twitter page. Called the Devil's Lettuce or something.

They put up old 40s/50s style propaganda posters and photoshop new ones on "How bad it is to smoke the Devil's lettuce!" Some of them are just f*cking hilarious.

The 68 year old bag should've gotten out of the way. She has no one to blame but herself for injecting herself into a volatile situation.

@ DAve.....first comment you made, you called someone a "bitch." Secondly, you said that the "68 year old bag," referring presumably to the school nurse.....I assume that the school nurse was the right person to administer the breathalyzer. She was there doing her job. Your referring to others the way that you do tells me that you have some growing up to do. Are you a cousin of the guy who got drunk? Where did you learn YOUR set of values? Seems like you and the drunk teen are two branches off the same tree.

Your thinking about the family tree is probably correct. However, not sure that the family tree, in this case, has any branches!

Just FYI, Dave-2292019 is the parent of the child!

I hope we don't see any future news from this family.....it can be ugly!
