19 hurt after fire in 40-story building on NYC's Second Avenue

Firefighters at the scene of a fire in a high-rise building in Manhattan.

Nineteen people, including nine firefighters, were taken to the hospital after a wind-driven fire broke out in a 40-story building in New York City early Saturday morning.

The blaze on the 12th floor of a Second Avenue building on Manhattan's Upper East Side saw 25 fire department units – a total of 110 firefighters – speed to the scene after the call came through at 3:42 a.m., said Mike Madison, a fire department spokesman said.

Nine firefighters were taken to the hospital, including six who suffered minor burns to their knees, Madison said.

Ten civilians suffered minor injuries or were affected by smoke inhalation, the FDNY spokesman added. The fire was brought under control at 5:34 a.m.

Fire officials said the fire was contained to one apartment in the high-rise on the corner of 92nd Street, NBCNewYork.com reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. As of noon Saturday, more than six hours after the blaze was brought under control, fire officials remained on the scene. Windows on the building’s 12th floor were shattered and shards of glass were scattered on the sidewalk in front of the building, along with other debris. Broken glass was also in the street on Second Avenue.

John Rodriguez waited for the building’s elevator service to be restored on Saturday afternoon. Rodriguez, 75, got a call from his girlfriend, a resident of the building’s 28th floor, at about 5 a.m. Rodriguez said she was told by building security to stay put. Rodriguez was hoping to avoid climbing the 28 flights of stairs up to see her.

“At some point, I’ll have to make the climb,” he said.

NBC News’ Michele Acevedo and Ian Johnston contributed to this report.

If the fire was limited to 1 apt, it is a well designed building. Good job to the firefighters and architects alike.

I have to wonder what kind of an apartment it was to cause minor injuries to 9 professional firefighters...or else they are just getting less training and suffer the consequences...I think this is a general issue with both police and firefighters...look at the reaction in LA over a "similar" looking vehicle to the cop killer...just poor training

A fire in a high rise building is not to be taken lightly. Although the NYPD and NYFD are frequently criticized, sometimes rightly so, they are professional organizations. If the NYFD sent 110 fireman, they had a reason.

Barry, nor is a fire in a single story . nor is sensationalism ask yourself would an apartment fire make national news without the 40 story headline? and 110 why...?.. what was it a bucket brigade?

      #1.8 - Sat Mar 9, 2013 12:56 PM EST

Why 110 Firefighters, because high rise buildings are standpipe operations using 21/2" hoses. They are very labor intensive. So until you have climbed multiple stories in my turnout gear.....

Well, it wasn't in a single story building and it WAS in a 40-story building. So, what's your point?

        #1.10 - Sat Mar 9, 2013 1:36 PM EST

Ed, The fire was contained to one apartment because the building codes were actually followed correctly.

            Faerieschyld,

Probably not, but it's always a possibility. They usually occur in "tight" buildings when the fire has been burning for a while and consumed the O2 in the space. (Very oversimplified explanation of how backdraft's occur)

It's shameful that so many people choose to go to the negative always. These comment sections have become a place for the evil, ignorant and those compelled to vomit whatever comes to mind here. It used to be a place for people to exchange information. To the guy who says "Shouldn't this fall under local news for NY? - NY is the largest city in the U.S. and when 19 people are hurt, yes, it makes headlines. To those trying to make it political with comments about our Mayor or President - Grow up!! It's not cute, funny or amusing. This is a sad story and your sick humor isn't appreciated. Mayor Bloomberg tries to help our city by educating them about transfat, cigarettes, sugary drinks, etc. They're not illegal, he's trying to help our obese society become healthier. The high cost of health care trickles down to all of us. Personally, I don't have $100,000 for heart surgery or cancer treatment. Those that choose to be unhealthy that end up passing their hospital bills onto the rest of us, need to think about their decisions. Thank you NYFD.

They have nothing worthwhile to bring to the table and EXPLOIT any unrelated tragedy to throw insults or make completely irrelevant political statements. When anyone calls them on it, they use their maturity level of a five year old to throw insults like that will hurt the person who made the comment and/or somehow make it sound like they are more than a jerk full of hot air. The anonymity provided by the internet has inspired people to forget what it means to be a decent human being.

Drifting from the fire and going off on a tangent does indeed show something about mental status. Instead of being concerned about the victims, it's easier to go off on a tangent to expose ignorance. In school, they were referred to as "class clowns". Now, there just clowns. Back to the story.

She explained that after a small procedure to be carried out on me this afternoon involving a coat hanger and my occipital lobes I would be free to leave or stay as I wished. Is this the norm here? Should I be concerned??

"19 hurt after fire in 40-story building on NYC's Second Avenue"

                                  Huh?

Were they really hurt after the fire? Not during the fire, nor by the fire?

After the fire and everything was sorted out, 19 were discovered hurt. After a tragedy, it usually takes time to assess the situation and see how many people were hurt. I didn't look too deeply into the semantics. In journalism, there's a lot of room for style including twisting language or even misspelling. Not everything is exact in journalism. I read the headlines and got the meaning immediately. I believe "most" of us did too.

And in addition to all the folks wandering around the ward trying to bum cigarettes off the staff we have the former copy editors wearing their Napoleon outfits and bragging how they can hit a typo from a thousand yards out.....

Just a group of New Yorkers who are dedicated to their job. Too bad they do not make enough money to be able to live in Manhattan where they work and save lives

40 stories??? Good grief, there's NO NEED of that.

High capacity buildings should be banned.

This would not have happened if the building's capacity was limited to 7.

I live a block away from this corner. I know exactly what building it is without even physically going out to check. This is the third time this building's apartments have gone up in flames over the last 5 years. That's virtually unheard of for a postwar elevator building in NYC. I'm sure it has nothing to do with it being a low/moderate income housing building. No. Not at all.

                                          Building has concierge and doorman.

$4,600/ month. Low income??? That's $55,200 per year.

Because a few years ago it was bought out and now being rented out at market rents but by NYC law the new owners can't evict the current residents who are under rent controlled guildelines, i.e. 90% of the building which are, indeed low/MODERATE income residents. I live here. I walk by that building twice a day 5 days a week at least, going to and from work. I see what goes in & out of that building. Or even what's hanging out in front of the building all the time.

Why do you think the owners don't have a current up to code fire alarm system? Because w/ every apartment that burns all they have to do is make the residents rental agreement null & void b/c of extensive damage, renovate it and rent it out at market rent. They want more of these fires to happen as long as they can kick out the current residents & rent the apartment for 5 times as much as they were.

For the record I've NEVER seen a doorman at that building. They may have someone working at the desk in the lobby but they don't have a doorman. That real estate broker is stretching the truth a bit.

There was no controlled demolition involved. That's why. ;)

Why do I think we may know who a suspect is?

Wonder how is it the building didn't come straight down? I mean it's a fire in a HIGH RISE in NYC. Aren't those supposed to simply collapse from a fire? O wait...someone forgot the thermite and C4.

All fire fighters deserve a lot of credit. Here they are volunteers with no pay. A couple of years ago, they saved our town from a huge grass fire in this area. Many of these fire fighters in America are unknown to national news, while we understand many throughout America are true hero's.

First of all I am not criticizing anyone here. Want to be clear on that. I also think it's great that there was no loss of life and the fact that there were injuries is unfortunate

I was just awe struck...not really in a good or bad way, that 25 fire departments and 110 fire fighters were involved for a one apartment fire. THAT is one heck of a lot of manpower. Probably fortunate the city HAD that many people to send. Something tells me, that with that many people involved, the fire could potentially have been much, much worse and/or that is one heck of a large apartment.

It must be Obama OR the Republicans....gotta blame someone. Actually I was amazed that I did not even get past the first page of comments before someone made a remark about Obama. It's sad really.
