Illinois bill proposes ban on lion meat

Roaring stomachs may not be able to satisfy their hunger with lion meat as a proposed bill plans to make the sale of meat from the king of the jungle illegal in Illinois.

The bill, filed in February and sponsored by state Rep. Luis Arroyo, was assigned to Illinois' Agriculture & Conservation Committee Thursday and would make Illinois the first U.S. state to place a ban on lion meat.

The bill would make it illegal "for any person to slaughter a lion or for any person to possess, breed, import or export from this State, buy, or sell lions for the purpose of slaughter." It also declares commercializing lion meat unlawful.

Violators of this law could face up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.

The sale of lion meat caused a controversy in 2010 for an Arizona restaurant, which bought 10 pounds of frozen meat from Czimer's Game & Sea Foods in Illinois.

No law currently prohibits the sale of this animal meat, as lions are not currently protected as an endangered cat in the U.S., according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

A petition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, however, began a study to determine if the animal should be protected under the Endangered Species Act.

African lion populations have seen "a substantial decline" over the past two decades and are estimated to be around 32,000, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which monitors species numbers globally.

The threats include not only trophy hunters, but loss of habitat, humans eating lion meat, and commercial sale of their body parts, said Adam Roberts, executive vice president of Born Free USA.

So has this become such a big problem ? How about you outlaw killing the lion instead of banning the sale of lion meat. It's like horse meat, you can kill your horse but don't eat it. That would be wrong.

I'm sure Bambi would love to know how to get similar protection. The closest chance it ever had was when Hollywood made its great film "Bambi". Truth revealed! But then other films were made, like The Lion King, The Jungle Book, Escape From Madagascar, and Operation Dumbo. Causing folks to flock to see and protect those critters ever since. Leaving the local animal kingdom going into the bushes. Animals are arguing amongst themselves now about banning tryouts for movies! Now lions get protection from diners but still none for Bambi, just not fair! (Double ear droop )

It'll be like when Chicago tried to ban pate de foie gras because they thought it was cruel to stupid geese that are just idiotic animals with no value other than food for us. Restuarants served it free, but charged for the crackers. Within a short period of time, Chicago lifted the ban. Prohibition never works.

First off, if you breed an animal for meat purposes, you ALSO tend to preserve a species. So banning the raising of lions for meat/slaughter is asinine.

Second, banning the sale of lion meat simply creates a black market FOR the meat, inviting fraudulent meat being sold, poor quality control (because criminals are not necessarily clean people).

And third, the last thing the Illinois taxpayers need is another government agency to support.

Windancerson, you are worried about protection for Bambi??? Fifty years ago or so, in New York State, there were perhaps 200,000 deer in the entire state, if that. There were natural predators to pare the herds of the weak, old or dying and only the healthiest and strongest survived. Today, the estimate for deer population is close to 4,000,000!!!!! There are no natural predators. The only hunter is man, and there is a limit on what he can obtain for food or even an occasional trophy. In the last 10 or 11 years, I have hit, or been hit, by FOURTEEN deer on my trips to and from work after dark or coming from a movie. On one of those occasions, FIVE ran out from a gully alongside my dark route home. Even at a slow speed, I hit three in the middle, one slammed into my passenger door, another swung around and barely missed my driver's window (with antlers!!!!). Five were eating my bushes one morning right in front of my porch. AND ONE OF THEM got on top of my porch to eat them from above barely three feet from my picture window, which is very low to the floor. My brothers each have HERDS of 10 to 12 grazing in their back yards. One of his neighbors had a deer fly through his windshield and hurt him badly. The property damage from an unnatural explosion in deer population has run into the billions. They destroy vegetable gardens, plantings, total automobiles, cause personal injury and threaten other wildlife which compete for the same food--such as beavers, groundhogs, elk, bear, etc. of which a few of these reside in state parks. One man, with whom I am acquainted, took his little dog out late in the evening for a bathroom break and was charged by a stag during rutting season. He barely made it into his house. Why don't you take a nice, long, leisurely evening sightseeing drive through New York one day, but be sure you take your insurance card with you, your AAA membership, a cellphone and a FIRST AID KIT, plus a blanket and extra food should you be out of cellphone range. Before you put your keyboard in gear, KNOW what you are talking about.

Deer are a tasty source of lean protein. In Painted Post, NY, the deer population is so huge, and kills (through car accidents) 3-5 people a yeat around Sullivan Park. For safety's sake, they have to hold in-town bow hunts (because gun hunting in the village limits is too dangerous) with no bag limits most years. We feed a LOT of homeless with these hunts.

Neale Osborn-Yep it isn't just for humans that life isn't fair.Man sure makes it hard for creatures to survive. Nature provides a level playing field, but evolution never planned for things like headlights, cars urban developments and bullets.

Tess42- Relax your grip on your gun,and take some deep breaths, okay? Did you miss the droopy ears part and animals getting together to banning tryouts for movies? You really think I was serious about those animals doing that huh?I guess perhaps I should have put lots of funny faces to make it clear my comments were tongue in cheek?Maybe you didn't get a good nights rest, it just happens sometimes.

I confess my humor may be a struggle for some to grasp.I lean towards Gary Larson's, for those who know him. Understandable you can struggle thinking how a species hunted all the time, could be envious of another, getting a lucky break from death. Thus desiring the same law passed to protect it and its buddies. Like one of those Gary Larson Far Side cartoons. So, I confess, it never occurred to me I'd have to qualify my sense of humor with a disclaimer for types like you,but should will think about it. How about this:

Attention-The following comment is for humor purposes only, and not meant to ignore any of the costs incurred to owners of real property, personal property, physical injuries,or loss of life, as a result of encounters with or actions of Bambi.Any implication of supporting such actions by said Bambi is in the mind of the reader only.Comment is meant tongue in face cheek only and anyone legally allowed to hunt Bambi is welcome to continue to do so as long as they follow all legal guidelines, safety precautions.(Did I miss anything?)

Then again, I still would probably offend someone, as you just can't please all people at all times in everything. I do my best not to assume to know what others have experienced and that what goes on in my area everyone should obviously know.I would suggest however you bubble wrap your car several layers at least.

Jerry-1903677-geese are too stupid and are just idiotic animals with no value other than food for us.
Actually, geese have made the perfect alarm systems in nature, giving early warning to farmers for millennium while fearlessly/aggressively attacking pursuing any intruders approaching his property. In addition to eating insects/pests helping reduce crop loss.A pest control and fertilizer system all in one

"The threats include not only trophy hunters, but loss of habitat, humans eating lion meat, and commercial sale of their body parts"

I seem to be in the minority here, but it will be heartbreaking to live in a world without the lion, knowing that we caused its extinction. Chief Seattle (a much wiser person than any of the posters I've seen so far) said, "What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, man would die from a great loneliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man. All things are connected."

And I'm really sorry that there is no hope for Jerry1903677.

Certainly carnivorous fish are considered the best tasting fish. And people eat gators and turtles but nobody want's to eat Crow.

How about cheetah meat? the restaurant can use a slogan like "zero to your plate in 4 seconds". With lion meat they can say "only a king on your plate is fit for a king" or panda meat "enjoy your panda with our bamboo chopsticks" and yes I just went there. The restaurant clearly wanted to offer something no one else does and many people would love to try things just once. So the only way to keep things from getting out of control would be to limit such.

How many lions does this save? I mean, the restaurant in AZ (not IL) that caused a ruckous only bought ten pounds of meat. How much meat is on a typical lion? At least 80 pounds I would think. So 1/8 of a lion was consumed in the US> what sense does formally banning it make? Christ can't politicians worry about the issues that really matter? You know like employment and reinvigorating the economy?

People who live in Illinois deserve what they elect to office. Their Extreme Liberal BS makes me laugh. They should put a cage around the State and charge admission to look thru the bars at the show. They should be segregated from Normal people

You should see some of the bills the libtards try to pass here in CA.

Animals exist for us to use in whatever form we decide, including as a food source. They are not human beings, human life or persons. Slit their throats and start cutting them up for our pleasure. It's our bodies that use them and our right to choose what we want to do with our bodies. I own several coats, boots and hats made from mink, wolves and seal to keep me warm. My body, my choice. Don't like using animals? Don't use them.

"Tool" is too nice a word for the Jerry animal. I'd sort of like to make gloves out of it. After all, it's a nasty animal of no value.

Hell I'd pay damn good money to watch that!

"Animals exist for us to eat" Who told you that? Your stupid preacher or your stupid politician? Both, probably. Or, some other tool like Flush Limburger.

Seriously, I hope you eat something that has a right to infest you with incurable brain eating parasites.

WTH! Don't this politician and his followers have any better thing to do? They got too much free time on their hands to watch Disney animations and came to the conclusion they should spend the time and money of the tax payers to lobby and ban lion meat. What A Pity!

They actually have absolutely no idea what to do about their real problems so they deflect attention away from those with crap like this. Sadly, Chicagoans swallow this stuff hook line and sinker.

Um, so this is such an epidemic problem that a law needs to be created right now for it...I guess I'll never try deep-dish lion meat pizza. Darn!

Lions are big cats. Americans chide the Chinese and other Asians for eating cats and dogs.

Ever take the time to think that "American" isn't a race, and that it might be "Chinese or other Asians" that are eating this stuff?
