Heavy snow blankets Colorado, prompts flight cancellations

An overhead sign warns that Interstate 70 is closed to the east as a tractor trailer heads out of Aurora, Colo., as a late winter storm packing wet, heavy snow and high winds swept over the intermountain West on Saturday, March 9, 2013.

A powerful storm dumped snow on the Rocky Mountains on Sunday, after having forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights and the postponement of a Major League Soccer game.

The fierce Pacific storm was moving east across the Plains into the Midwest, and blizzard conditions were possible in parts of Nebraska and northwest Kansas, The Weather Channel reported.

Forecasters also said that parts of the region could expect wind gusts of up to 50-miles-an-hour and white out conditions.

Meteorologists said there could be accumulations of 3 to 6 inches in portions of Iowa, Minnesota, central Wisconsin and northern Michigan as well on Sunday.

Snow pounded Denver, Colo., Saturday, falling at more than an inch per hour at times. Nearly 500 flights out of Denver International Airport had to be canceled. The Weather Channel's Mike Seidel reports.

The late-winter blast has already dumped up to 10 inches of heavy, wet snow in the Denver metropolitan area, The Weather Channel reported.

More than 600 flights in and out of Denver International Airport were canceled on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.

"Many of the canceled flights are commuter flights that go to mountain towns," airport spokesman Heath Montgomery told Reuters, adding that the facility remained open.

Looking ahead, passengers could expect delays of up to 30 minutes as crews de-iced departing aircraft, he said, according to Reuters.

The Colorado Rapids postponed their Major League Soccer game against the Philadelphia Union until Sunday, the team said on its website

And as the storm moves farther east, rain is expected to move into western New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia on Monday, the Weather Channel reported.

I asked what heavey rain ment. Now I'am asking what heavy snow means. How fat are the snow flakes to consider them heavy. Are the real big ones considered fat flakes.

When that "no technology" includes no power, water or heat, it gets old real fast! A week is a long time to go without basic necessities even when you are prepared for it.

When are we going to start naming forest fires, floods and droughts? Who got to call it "Triton" anyway? I'll bet it wasn't the National Weather Service. Personally, I prefer "George".

Naming all storms? ....ok..Around here a couple feet of snow was melted by the rain over the last 23 or so hours

i believe i will name the mud-hole that use to be my yard....Gil.

What does the name of a storm have to do with your soggy yard?

      #2.2 - Sun Mar 10, 2013 11:37 AM EDT

The National Weather Service does not nor do they have plans to name winter storms. That is strictly a Weather Channel thing.

@Gil ---- Because if I could name the storm that has just made my yard soggy it wouldn't be Gil. I have mud everywhere. But I'am thankful for the moisture.

The National Weather Service actually issued a bulletin to it's regional Weather Forecast Offices at the beginning of winter directing them to NOT use the names that The Weather Channel was giving winter storms.

Maybe we should consider corporate sponsorship of storms. The sponsor would pay a fee to get distributed amongst those negatively effected. All news media would be obliged to use the corporate name when they reported on it.

Services would use the designated name so you could expect to see things like "This snowplow brought to you by Coca Cola". This could help save some money for the municipalities and you could even have things like "The Red Bull FEMA Team" on the scene helping out.

Maybe that's because virtually the entire Rocky Mountain Range is still in Severe, Extreme, or Exceptional Drought, cit?

And I say 'still' because your article is from nearly 2 years ago - but things continue to get even worse.

Data from the Rutgers University Global Snow Lab show that, the December average, snow covered the most area on record in 2012, from data dating back to 1966. This was OVER 1+Million Sq kilometer higher than the average anomalies and has been INCREASING in coverage since the lowest recorded in 1980. During Jan 2013, the Northern Hemisphere snow coverage was @ the HIGHEST levels on record...

BTY -2010 was the third highest...

Currently the Arctic is in a negative phase of the Arctic Oscillation which allows for more cold Arctic air to intrude or mix with air at lower latitudes. These cold air outbreaks can result in low temperatures and increased storminess in mid latitudes. ie the Rockies and the Mississippi water basin, resulting in the current high levels of snow & later WATER into their depleted aquifers...

Through the month of Feb 2013, the Arctic gained 766,000 square kilometers of ice (296,000 square miles), which is 38% higher than the 1979 to 2000 average for the month...

The Arctic sea ice has now returned back into the AVERAGE ZONE of 2 deviations. Just like it did last year, resulting in one of the highest sea ice extents in March 2012...

The Antarctic sea ice was quite extensive throughout the austral summer period. Monthly average sea ice extent for February 2013 was 3.83 million square kilometers (1.48 million square miles) and minimum daily sea ice extent for the Antarctic region was 3.68 million square kilometers (1.42 million square miles) on February 20. Sea Ice extent was also well above average for the Ross Sea region relative to the entire 1979 to 2013 satellite record...

I'm always asked where did you hear there is free stuff? I just say Rmoney and the other republicans say there is free stuff and I want my free stuff. John.....There is difference between heavy snow and snowing heavy. If someone says it's snowing heavy out there, it just means there is a lot of snow coming down. Now, if they say thee snow is heavy then that is water retaining snow and it is heavy. Just because it is "snowing heavy" does not make the snow heavy

May there be NO loss of lives in this snowstorm. May there be NO loss to houses and infrastructure in this snowstorm. Its better to be indoors and stock up all the essentials to face the winter and the snowstorm. GOD Bless the Americans. GOD BLESS THE USA.
