Teen running from cops picks wrong house for hiding

View more videos at: http://nbcmiami.com.

After hopping one too many fences, a teen running from police in Florida met a neighbor willing to help him hide out. At least that's what he thought.

On Monday just before noon, an off-duty officer standing in front of his home in Opa Locka, near Miami, noticed a teen running around his block.

"He stopped, put his hands on his legs, trying to catch his breath. He says, 'I'm running from the police. Can you help me?'" the officer told NBC 6. The homeowner is a Miami-Dade Schools' detective, who did not want to be identified.

"Sure I can help you." he answered.

The teen hopped the fence and walked right into the friendly man's home. He jumped right onto the leather couch but failed to notice his surroundings. There are several pictures of the homeowner in uniform, and a police radio on the table. None the wiser, the teen started spilling the beans, telling the officer he had pushed his foster mother.

"But he didn't push her, he beat her and then he ran," said the officer.

In fact, according to an Opa Locka police report, his victim was 61 years old. She was found covered in blood. Her left eye was swollen shut.

More from NBCMiami.com

Once inside the officer's home, the teenager got even more comfortable. He took off his shirt and wiped the sweat off his face. He was so relaxed, he didn't pick up on the fact that the officer had been on the phone with one of his colleagues who works for the Miami-Dade Police Department.

The homeowner spoke in police jargon to get authorities to the house.

When the teen saw patrol cars in the front yard he asked the homeowner, "What are we going to do?"

"I don't know what we're going to do, but you're going to jail," the officer told him.

Calmly, police cuffed and escorted the teen into an Opa Locka patrol car.

The teen's identity was not being revealed by police because he is a minor. He was charged with aggravated battery and was being held at the Department of Juvenile Justice. The Department of Children and Families was also investigating.

But isn't it sad that this child who is in FOSTER CARE isn't getting the HELP that he needs? Children in FOSTER CARE come from families that are often violent, neglectful, and somewhat dangerous to the welfare of the child. This child seems like he has a lot of issues, so why are you people cheering that he's now in Juvenile detention? Why aren't you outraged that this child is not getting the proper psychological care that would help him overcome his anger and resolve the conflicts inside him to become a productive member of society?

Charle7834,

We obviously don't know the whole story but, with today's teenagers, they all want, want, want and I can see this kid not listening to the rules of a woman, who took him into her home, fed him, clothed him, gave him a better life with all the fixins'.

So he can turn around and beat the livin' piss outta her. Hmmmmmmm.......

Foster children are always checked up on and checked to make sure they're getting the correct and proper care etc... So, I really can't sympathize with a teenager who bit the hand that fed him.

To answer your question though, he's now in a facility where he's going to get the care he needs as per your concerns.

Agree?! Hope you feel better now. About the kid anyway...

Good morning Creek Dog,

You said, "Foster children are always checked up on and checked to make sure they're getting the correct and proper care etc..."

I highly doubt it. I went to school with a few (many) foster kids and let me tell you, social workers are spread so thin, that they often don't have time to check on everyone as often as they ought to. Also, there are plenty of people out there that are just fostering for the paycheck and treat their "kids" like total and udder @!$%#. It's sad, the kids get taken from one deporable home, just to be put in another and another and....

You are correct about teens these days (for the most part), but lumping foster kids in with the ones from loving homes doesn't work.

Creek Dog

I mostly agree with what you're saying, but the part of foster children being checked on is not at all accurate. A vast majority of foster children aren't checked on due to lack of state resources to hire enough social workers. Not saying that these children are living in bad homes because they aren't checked on, but most states can't afford to check.

Perhaps the better question is, "Why aren't you outraged that this POS beat the crap out of his 61-year old female caregiver?" I have a bit of news for you: We all suffer adversity. Some more than others. What separates the heroes from the zeroes is how we deal with it.

Yes, I understand that they are spread thin however, if something goes wrong, and they do an investigation only to find out that they have not checked on the kids within certain time frames along with the paperwork, lawsuits start to fly and they want to avoid that yet, it happens all the time.

Let me restate my comment, they "should" be checked on often. :-)

Thanks for the correction and have a good day...

look at the obvious---some people should not have kids---and sad as it is it's usually more than one born just

because someone opened legs to 100 different guys---knowing the system would pay for it.

Family values are gone due to the PC movement and it all starts with Hollywood idiots that it's OK to have kids

by different fathers and people are so stupid to not see that for them it may be OK since have $$$$ to support.

My question on this is what his lawyer will say in court about his confession to the cop he didn't know was a cop.

Will his confession be legal in court, or will it be thrown out because he wasn't read his rights beforehand?

That said, I hope his foster mother is ok. I know there are bad foster homes out there. People looking just for the money. But there are good ones too.

Until we know which this was I will side with the 61yr old victim rather than the teen who beat her.

    Charl;

What if this lady had not been their to offer a place for this kid? What then, the juvenile warehouses of yesterday? Just because he was from a poor family, (poor as in, not caring for him or giving him what he needs, no in a monetary since), is no excuse for beating this older woman so savagely. Many, Many people come from bad situations, they all don't beat a woman senseless. They don't rob people, rape people, murder people. Excuses are like a$$ hole, they all one and they all stink. You, not your family, not society, not T.V., not the world, YOU are responsible for the Choices you make.

Where's you concern for the 61 year old woman he beat? Where is your concern that someone you love might be his next victim? The world is not a rose garden, life sucks sometimes, but acting like an animal will only get you caged. The reason these little darlings feel they can do the things they do is the slap on the wrist, poor little thing response from too many people these days. If you had beaten this woman would you expect to get a pass? Seriously?, please. I can see the potential headlines now, "Serial rapist terrorizes Florida neighborhood, Three killed in armed robbery, or Police shoot and kill robbery suspect after shoot out". But he was from a broken home, he had a crummy childhood, he was disadvantaged. Excuses, Excuses.

"We are so lucky that criminals tend to be at the low end of the intelligence meter. If smart people ever decided to commit crimes, it would be a lot harder to catch them."

Not to sound cynical, but what about all those Ivy League-educated guys on Wall Street that fed the public Ponzi schemes and the like... You think those guys were not committing crimes? And for a lot more money than these "low end" criminals...

As for foster care, I adopted two boys out of foster care, and they certainly had issues. The social workers did check on them once a month. If someone wanted to do what some foster parents do (and I know of at least a couple who were cited to me as models of foster parenting, but who were nothing but), one visit a month won't stop them.

That said, this kid is clearly not going to listen to a 61 year old woman... it's also about placement... When I read in the story that the kid sits down on the leather couch in a home he has just entered, takes his shirt off, etc., it is clear he has 'attitude' that a 61 year old woman will not be able to curb...

    Charle, JDP, Big Daddy,

You have the right idea. My experience with kids in the system almost caused me to file a lawsuit on behalf of one kid that surely, didn’t receive proper care. The social workers are swamped. Yet, it seemed only one in four of them were doing their job outside of simply writing reports that failed to identify anything that would cause them to have to do more work. State paid doctors too did little to nothing for the kids except to justify their pay.

Through my investigations in delinquency and adoption cases, I was amazed to find facts and issues, glaring through interviews with the children, foster care providers and schools that were not included
    in the “paperwork.”

Despite what these children learned in their early years, poor attitude was typically imputed on the most seriously messed-up kids. Forget about actually helping or teaching them, or addressing their developing anti-social disorders. That would require someone to do the job they originally studied for at college. Locking them up with other, like minded kids, where they can form gangs is the default solution. Creek Dog’s attitude fits well in that social context. That stateworker mentatlity does seem justify the hero/loser judgement, but it also appears to perpetuate the problem.

BTW for those blaming politicians- Chicago paramedics understand that the girl that attended BO’s inauguration that was shot on her front porch was, prior to that moment, smoking dope at the playground with the people that shot her. There was nothing random about it. The shooter was supposedly a person who was shot two years earlier and thought the girl (or her family) was involved in shooting him. I mean no disrespect - it's just something I heard, who knows?

Charle7834 - While it is true that this kid needs proper guidance and likely psychological help, it is also clear that he needs a lesson that actions have consequences. This is probably a child who never had any proper boundaries set for him (like the vast majority of children these days). While there may be foster homes that abuse and mistreat some children, it is wrong to assume that all foster homes are bad. Many are very good people trying to help the children who they know come from broken homes and abused backgrounds. This 61 year old woman did not deserve to be beaten by this teenager. He deserves to go to jail or at least juvenile detention. As I said, actions have consequences. If he is not reined in and given strict boundaries and taught right from wrong now, he will end up a career criminal. If you take the bleeding heart road and blame the foster system for his problems and coddle him, you will only end up hurting this boy's chances of ever getting his life on track.

Looking at the commical side of this, I have to say it's astoundingly hilarious. Looking on the serious side, which many of you seem to be contemplating because you hate police or for what ever other reason, society itself will never be that fully functional happy-go-lucky American dream that was percieved back in the 50s. It's a messed up, drugged out, violent and back stabbing world. There is only so much that can be done at times like these and yet there are people who take the joy out of this world by not sitting back and realizing that this is in fact funny. We don't know the full story and never will since he is a minor. All we DO know is that while in the care of a juvenile prison he will get regular check ups by a psychologist if it is in fact due to a bad past upbringing or a bi-polar issue or any other issues. Critics cannot deny that, even though not the best place to think of sending a kid, jail time will do him good if it can fix him. Will it? That depends on the psychologist and him.

When I was a youngster I was put into a Juvenal facility because I didn't listen to my mother (I deserved it) and while I was detained I talked with many of the kids who told me what they had did and they were all proud of there crimes! This was back in the late 70's, I can only imagine what it must be like now, our world has changed but the children are still the same but with an attitude of I want more of this and that and if you wont give it to me I will just go get it myself through stealing. Its way out of hand, families with only one parent that cannot control the kids whether male or female!

Its street culture going mad and they seem to think they have all the answers without thinking it through. Some of these kids can be helped but it takes a very special person to go one on one with them and we just do not have the people to cover all the kids that need help.

This kid in the article will most likely go on to bigger and badder crimes because he thinks he is above everyone else and the cops are his enemy period. His family may have tried to help him at one time but kids like this are a huge problem and once the courts get a hold of them there isn't a thing the parent can do for them anymore and they become part of the system.

I hope this kid spends a good amount of time incarcerated for what he did to that poor lad trying to help him. The system needs help but the kids do not care about anyone but themselves period and that is the main problem.

I was lucky, I leaned what I did back then was wrong and I am forever grateful to the court system for what they did for me. but I am like the 1% or 2% in that regard.

There are a couple different settings.

There is a Taser setting where the person experiences stimulation of their sensory and motor nerves that create your muscles to go into strong involuntary muscle contractions and then there is the setting where you pull the trigger again and again (Drive Stun Mode) when you also want to add Pain Compliance...

This is for when the perp tries to fight back and overcome the stunning which some do when seriously high on coke, bath salts etc....

No, there is no "kill" setting however, people have been known to die from the shock interrupting their heart beat...

I get the short bus. But round school? In my school district, you most likely graduated from the round school as it was the primary high school. Nicknamed Dolly Parton High for its roundness, whiteness, and size. The alternative school was for people who couldn't behave well, tolerate a windowless environment for 6 hours (round windows are expensive), or otherwise needed constant and special attention. It was a small blocky building in the middle of town. If I recall rightly, it was actually rented.

Yitzach - where I am from, the alternative school was a round building without windows except for the front door. It was a school board building & they built a new bldg and moved. The alternative school at the time was an old bldg in town that was in very bad shape. So they turned the old school board bldg into the alternative school. That's why I said round school. :-)

During some psychological studies of behaviors, they will put a subject inside a round room with one way windows. It makes them feel less confined when it's round rather than squared off.

That is freaking great! I kind of feel sorry for the kid, seeing as he is so stupid.

From jail his mama says he is such a bright boy trying to turn his life around, gonna go back and finish school...

If he had come to my house, when he started spilling the beans I would have simply shot him, you know, out of fear for my life and that of my family's. End of problem on a permanent basis!

You see the funny shade to his skin? Says it all.

What a racist a-hole. Did you also see the detectives skin? Or how about some of the other gentelmen in the video? Your comments say it all, Southernklansman.

Would liked to have seen the kids face when he found out he was busted!

All to sad though in today's world there would have been many that would have hid the kid from the cops, even a POS that beats an elderly lady!

I bet the cop was thinking the entire time, "I hope I pull this off. I hope I pull this off. Don't run away kid... I will have the best story EVER!"

True, wait until the bleeding hearted, criminal loving liberals show up, their motto; it's not the kid's fault for his wrong behavior, but society for making him that way.
