Police: Michigan girl, 12, brings $20,000 to school, starts giving it away

Police were called to a Michigan grade school after $20,000 in cash was found in a 12-year-old's backpack. The student was passing it out to friends. WDIV's Lauren Podell reports.

A Michigan middle school student showed up to class Monday with a backpack stuffed with $20,000 and handed out wads of cash to her friends, officials said.

The unidentified girl, 12, received the money from another child who lives across the street from her parents' house in Taylor, a suburb near Detroit, Police Chief Mary Sclabassi told The Detroit News

Administrators at The Sixth Grade Academy became suspicious Monday morning when the girl was spotted doling out stacks of $100 bills to her classmates. Some of her peers were given as much as $500, Sclabassi told NBC affiliate WDIV in Detroit.

As soon as the school principal learned of the student's generosity, she called the police. All of the money was recovered, the chief said.

"Had word gotten out to maybe someone other than some other 12-year-olds, it could have put [the student] in a dangerous position," Sclabassi told WDIV.

The girl's unidentified neighbors have claimed their money, but police are still investigating Monday's strange incident, Sclabassi confirmed to The Detroit News.

Teresa D. Winnie, the assistant superintendent for the Taylor School District, said in a statement Tuesday that local officials "do not have a specific protocol for this type of situation."

"There was no threat to the student body in the building and the matter is currently in the hands of the Taylor Police Department," Winnie said.

The Sixth Grade Academy is a public middle school with roughly 700 students.

The police should just wait until the suspect is holed up in a house somewhere and then call in the LAPD to demolish and fire-bomb the house with their "non-flammable" tear gas. The LAPD are experts at that. Then they can proclaim it to be an accident just like with Chris Dorner.

First of all genius this happened in Detroit - LAPD has no jurisdiction there. Not sure if you're aware but Detroit is in MICHIGAN. It's another state nowhere near California, which is where LA is located.

Second of all, the 12 year old giving the money away didn't kill anyone, and was not a threat to anyone, and also was not doing anything illegal.

Finally, you might want to try learning how to read with comprehension.

udunnoBro: because of course a 12 yr with $20k in cash is a normal occurrence !

Unemployment is high in detroit, so where did the monies come from :

Detroit = drug monies

Danger = drug dealers dont like people giving away their monies (retaliation)

The little girls family is now in danger... give it a week and we will read another story of home burned down, drive-by shooting or family in hiding !

Or I could be wrong and the drug dealers will throw a block party and everyone will get drunk and then the shooting begins, either way this will end badly !

UDunnoBro: I did not gather that realityspeaks was suggesting that LAPD has jurisdiction or is based anywhere near Detroit, nor that the 12 year old was actually a criminal, rather he/she was just making a statement about the LAPD and what happened with Chris Dorner.

Finally, maybe you need to learn to read comments without taking things so literally.

And if whom ever it is that this belonged to hasn't already left Chicago, they will very soon be on an all expenses paid bus trip out of town at the expense of the Federal Prison system. ;-)

Hate to tell you all this and burst your little bubble, but there's lots of legitimate reasons for someone to have that much cash. Drugs are far from the only explanation. The owners have already claimed it. (per the article) If it was drug money it's doubtful they would have told the cops it was theirs. There's still no law against having cash!

Wow, the unidentified parents who claimed their money will now be the subject of all kinds of law enforcement activity. They will do their best to prove they got the money illegally and confiscate it all. Next will be the three letter places coming to call, you know? the FBI, IRS, DHS, etc. As we all know, the current administration will do their best to redistribute it , to among themselves of course.

I am still in shock that there are still dorner supporters... his firing was justified...the so called beating was denied by the person he says was beaten...

secondly being fired does not give anybodey the right to go on a killing spree...

and the police did shoot in tear gas that caught fire...but he shot himself before he burned up...because he knew he was caught and would have been given the death penalty

So, the Blackman, when will YOU be stepping up to fill the shoes of Mr. Dorner? Before you do, tell us your real name so we can follow YOUR story on tv. Need more people like him? More people to go on shooting rampages, killing innocent people? Nice, guy, real nice.

I got what The Blackman said. The LAPD has been killing innocent people for years! They definitely didn't want someone honest on their police force. Dorner was one of them. He was on the inside. He knew what was really going on. He had to go. They fired him...WHY? Answer that question. Was it because he told on an officer who was abusing someone who was probably innocent to get information out of that person. Cops have no right to beat information out of someone. Even if the person wasn't innocent, based on the story, the person who was being kicked by LAPD was not arrested....just having the crap being beat out of him. Ever heard of "innocent until proven guilty"?

And everyone has a right to a FAIR trial, including Dorner. But he'll never get one, will he? The whole story is a load of crap and shady as the LAPD is well known to be.

There are some places I will NEVER live because of the blatant corruption. Florida is first on my list and LA is probably a close second.

Strange how the defenders of the LAPD are silent on the shoot first, identify later routine they pulled on two different vehicles. They wanted Dorner dead before he could ever speak another word. Why did those detectives open fire on a truck with two women in it? Why did Riverside cops open fire on another vehicle that same day? Those actions certainly seem like they wanted Dorner dead instead of arrested...

I am surprised anyone claimed the money. It is more than likely drug money and the parents of the kid who gave the money to her friend are likely drug dealers or involved in some other criminal activity. People simply do not have $20,000 sitting around the house in a small duffel bag is the money is being made legitimately. I am sure that the police will now be asking a lot of questions about where the money came from and keeping a close eye on these parents.

I watched a little bit of Ed the Head last night on Progressive TV talk, and he was bemoaning the state takeover of Detroit's finances. He didn't mention that Detroit was about 13 billion down the hole, but did mention his solution of collecting the unpaid traffic tickets and unpaid property taxes. So I'm guessing this stash of money, obviously can't come from any crime source, specifically in Detroit, and is probably better explained as a well intended resident collecting unpaid traffic violations, money put into a pack sack to be turned into City Hall, before it got sidetracked to show and tell. If every school district in Detroit had a backpack with $20,000 in it, it still wouldn't put much of a dent in 13 billion. As far as the unpaid property taxes... Ed I hate to suggest this, those people may have left town with no intention of coming back, nor paying their taxes, primarily because if past political corruption could purloin those tax dollars at the local level, future crooks are likely to do the same. So much for that Progressive solution to city budget problems.

I was generalizing. I happen to know many non-racist people that are Republicans. Most of them very good people.

However, racists typically align themselves with the Republican Party. It's infested with them. This is unfortunate because for a lot of people, they only see this. Then when a conservative comes along with a great idea... it's ignored by a lot of people on just those grounds alone.

No, I didn't pull anything out of my ass. What I pulled up was the 2010 census...

      2010 census

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 63,131 people, 24,370 households, and 16,700 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,675.0 inhabitants per square mile (1,032.8 /km2). There were 26,422 housing units at an average density of 1,119.6 per square mile (432.3 /km2). The racial makeup of the city was 78.0% White, 15.8% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.8% Asian, 1.3% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. stop reading progressive revisionist history and study the truth. confederates who were democrats started the KKK to kill blacks and repubs, the democrat party even had KKK members as recent as the late senator robert byrd in its ranks. the dems created all segregation laws, the ones who denied blacks equal rights and even were oppose to the civil right movement. dont point out one party's faults while completely ignoring any faults in the party you support

so because the racists migrated to the repubs, that means the dems are no longer racist? how to you explain a known KKK member senator robert byrd -who never renounced his ties, being a democrat member? was only a few years back he passed and he wasnt the only known KKK member. nope its the repubs that are the party of " " right? dems can do no wrong, or is it dems can do wrong as long as repubs did it too?

johnson signed the law against his interest as it was widely known the whole of the democrat party were against any equal rights for blacks and even made speeches proclaiming "white right," johnson himself was publicly against giving blacks equal rights. racism never left the democrat party, it uses minorities as simple votes for their own power, as well as repubs. its really not a party problem, its an ideology problem, these people want power over others because they think they know what best for all. its a progressive problem.

"Had word gotten out to maybe someone other than some other 12-year-olds, it could have put [the student] in a dangerous position," Sclabassi told WDIV.

the actions of others have no relevance to this child having 20k so to presume a scenario where someones life is in danger is paramount to propaganda and control. if the money is owned by the child then she shall decide how to use it regardless of someone else making an unrelated choice. this case is not like that but presumption does not equate to truth.

      JS in SD;

I don't know about that, I generally have about 50-60K in a safe in my home. All made legally and without any sort of drug involvement. So what are you saying, people who don't like being without a cash reserve not in a bank are all criminals? Damn, you really are not up on current economics are you? Ever heard the expression Don't put all your eggs in one basket? No? Well you really should look into it. This will get the people who claimed the money all kinds of law enforcement attention, however. They will do their best to show it was gained illegally and as such confiscate it. Wire taps, cops sitting around in vans, then there are the three letter places, FBI, IRS, DHS will all be seeking to redistribute there money to themselves.

You apparently are not aware the Inuit are Native American. Just one of the arctic region tribes.

Hey Swaggernaut, if I drive down your street when you are out of town and see a person crawling out your window carrying a TV does presumtion equate to truth? You talk like intelligencia who commonly ignore the obvious and replace it with the "what if" argument. They give history lessons as though they were there and we should be impressed because they know the real truth. I worked for a few guys like that and maaaaaaaan it was torture. They knew it all in theory but knew nothing of actuality.

      Kat,

What you are inmplying is indeed correct. The original poster (can't remember his/her name already) was being racist. Lashwanda is clearly a black name. No other races' names sound like that. If another race named their child that name and no one saw the child, people would assume the child is black. It's cute how so many people still underestimate someone's intelligence based on their race. Don't underestimate lest you end up looking like a fool.

I believe Christian was actually supporting you so no reason to come down hard on him/her about political parties. I understood Christian's post and that it was generally written. I should hope that people are aware that there are black Republicans. Not saying that I am one of them but I hope people realize that they do exist.

Just thought I would come in to help clarify. People seemed so confused. Have a good'on!

@scienceCzar So, White people don't do (or are involved with) drugs? In the suburb (of Maryland) that I grew up in I knew more White people that did drugs than Black. Just because minorities are America's face of drugs and crime doesn't mean White people don't do it. Statistically speaking, since White people account for the majority of the U.S. population, they probably do it more than any other race.

Sorry I couldn't provide any statistics on this, though. I'm sure it's probably hard for the police to catch people who mainly do it in their homes, hotels, or parties. Moreover, since violent crime is the only crime that is disproportionately committed by minorities, I guess that leaves white collar, sex, hate, victimless, and political crime for White people.

Sounds like an even exchange to me...

Either way, it's quite unusual to have this in a backpack for a child to pick it up and start sharing it with friends... Of course, the senior citizen too paranoid to put their money in the bank and hide it underneath their mattress is another possibility. Pretty incredible generosity in part of the kid huh?? It's those who abuse this system (far larger than most will admit) who I am against helping. Hence, why I'm all for mandatory drug screening for all welfare recipients and tighter controls on where the money received is spent. If I have to take a pee test to be employed by the government to EARN money, why is it invasion of privacy for a welfare recipient to take one to get FREE money from the government?

You have abuse in every system. One has to wonder how many of those that complain about entitlements make little intentional mistakes on their taxes.

I guess I could say that I am for mandatory audits for people making a certain amount of money. Why would that be a bad thing? After all, we have to make sure the government is getting all it is owed and if I where to treat high earners the way that some treat the poor, I might want to assume that they are all cheating on their taxes.

You see. The intolerance of a certain group can indeed easily be applied to any group. What you suggest is not unreasonable, but then it is also not unreasonable to assume high wage earners will try to cheat the system and thus should be watched vary carefully.

It is not illegal, but the government dose watch for large sums being transferred in and out of banks. Generally sums of around 10k or so deposited to or pulled from a bank get reported to the fed, not as a crime but as a matter of tracking and I think it also has to do with anti money laundering as well.

It is not a crime, but it is different to keep 20k in your house and you know what happens when you are found to be different don't you? Yeah, you guessed it.. You get public opinionated to death and accused of what ever they feel like accusing you of.

I grew up less than 10 miles from Taylor and things must have changed a lot for that to be a 'stack, or the reporter is young and naive.

In making your assumptions, you're all forgetting one important fact. This did not happen in Detroit but in the suburb of Taylor. The median income in Taylor is almost double that of Detroit. Do a little research on Taylor, MI and you might change your mind that this is drug money. I remember a time when my husband had a large sum of cash in the house (pretty close to $20K) that my then 5-year-old daughter found in a photo album. Turns out my husband had been paid cash on a job (he's a builder) amounting to something in the area $8K and the rest was from the sale of an old truck a day before he got paid. He didn't have time to get to the bank before the weekend and it was just by sheer chance that our daughter wanted to go through the photos that were in the living room closet. She came to me when she found it. Trust me, we don't sell drugs.

Only in this forum would somebody say out loud - Detroit = Drugs. Could be money from an insurance policy...could have won the lottery. (LOTS of people don't keep their money in a bank - legal or otherwise.)

                This = Not News

OH Come on! Of course it's news! How often do you find someone with 20K laying around the house?? Not very often.... unless you have a thing against putting your money in the bank, it's Very Unusual!

Awesome - Here is another free giveaway.

Fixing the planet - Although Unity is primarily used for creating video games for Android and other phones it should not be limited to just being used to create games.

There is an untapped resource around the world involving radio stations. If a platform was created where a website was created that sponsored radio stations around the world then we would be better able to understand the cultures from around the other side of the world. A monthly fee would be charged for the service where the subscriber could then listen to any radio station from the world that they wanted to. An in station video cam along would be present along with subtitles in the subscribers native language....Job creation....technological job creation....the list goes on an on......

Unity could be used to create linking technology where subcribers could access any radio station across the planet. The app would be perfect for Unity because it is already geared towards c-phone use and wouldn't take much to develop the Unity WorldWide Radio Station App.

Millions of radio stations around the planet await a single portal access.

if all the drug dealers contributed $20,000 of dirty money to the government then it could get out of debt!! This is a small price for them to pay for the freedom of operating in the most liberal society in the world!!
