Subscribe to RSSA New Jersey Transit train was forced to make an unscheduled stop after a large brawl broke out inside one of the cars, leading to the ejection of several passengers.
It's not yet clear what sparked the brawl, which broke out shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday on a northbound Bergen/Port Jervis line train.
NJ Transit spokesman John Durso Jr. told The Star-Ledger of Newark that the fight began about 10 minutes after the train departed from Secaucus. The train soon made an unscheduled stop in East Rutherford, and authorities broke up the brawl.
Sixteen people were eventually ordered off the train, and two were issued summons for disorderly conduct. One person was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The train resumed service 20 minutes after the unscheduled stop.

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. I have been on this train out of Secaucus and it made ME want to hit somebody.

And the Progressives push for more money to be dumped into the railway system and regulate vehicles thereby creating an illusion that more riders will use the trains as a means of safe and affordable transportation.
That is like throwing more money into the education system and expecting everyone to graduate with a 4.0.

This statement had to have been made by a conservative since it has no proof. That train makes only one NJ stop after Secaucus. All of the other stops are in New York, in Rockland and Orange Counties, which usually vote Republican.
I take it that you don't live in the Northeast, @Ido. Most train station parking lots have waiting lists because so many people want to commute by train. Compared to driving in rush hour traffic, trains are faster, safer and more reliable than traveling by car.

screminmimi, I did! Love the Stephanie Plum books - just finished #17. But I think if Stephanie and Lulu (Lulu with Cluck in the Box chicken and a bag of doughnuts!) were on that train, it probably would have caught fire or blown up, and Ranger would have come to the rescue!

I hate to tell you guys at MSN, but the train in your picture is an Amtrak train, not a NJ Transit train! Trains are not just generic, although apparently they are to you. Accuracy in journalism is important, even on so small a matter as this. And the train in question was not an electrict train, as shown in the picture, it was a diesel train.

Since you mention Christy, NJ can't afford his fat @ss in this State. Hell, the first thing he did was lay off a ton of teachers and police officers than ran businesses out of the State...so there would be room for his fat @ss in the State. I do give him credit for his handling of the Hurricane but he still has not done anything to lower the unemployment rate that has been above the national average since he got into office. Before he was in office, NJ's unemployment rate was barely 8.4% when the country topped out at 10.2% in 2009. NJ spiked to 11% in March 2010...a couple of months after Christie took office.
I suggest people get their facts!! Christie would be great for the GOP...except he does not know how to create jobs...he only knows how to get rid of them. That's the problem with the GOP. Where is Teddy Roosevelt when we need a real Republican?!?!?!

What started the fight was probably something absolutely nothing to fight about. I don't know what is with people now a days, they want to fight about nothing. Than there is also the issue of having ones' space invaded. If that's the problem than move to a less populated place, get a fresh start. Either ways have a Green Beer, Kiss the Blarney Stone and move on.

Actually wyngs is right. In studies overcrowded rats have shown much more aggression than those who were allowed more 'elbow room'.
Why do we always have to make excuses for bad human behavior, When will we be able to just say...these individuals were troublemakers, If you use your theory that these individuals became aggressive because they were confined in a crowded area then why did only 16 of them become aggressive, It took a lot more than 16 to crowd the train car and yet not all of the people became aggressive and caused trouble.
Maybe the cause is not the crowding but more in the person and it is triggered in some people by crowding, The defect therein lies in the person and not the overcrowding, Millions of people commute in crowded conditions everyday and yet is is only a small minority of those people that are catalyzed by the crowding, Is it too much to ask that these people try to control their emotions.
Rats may become aggressive when crowded but there are other animals that live in colonies that are not aggressive, humans are not rats and quit trying to blame bad behavior on anything other than the actors causing the bad social behavior

I love being equated to vermin. That others view us as having no higher thinking or social order than a rat says a lot about how our maturity, reasoning power, or control that we have over ourselves is thought.
You see, the difference between humans and many other "lower" order animals is that we can tell time. Yes, time is the factor. Rats cannot tell time. For them, there is only the now. They don't realize that they will probably be let out of their closed in laboratory bubble to be fed and or cared for (unless it's part of the experiment). Cows don't know that daylight savings time has kicked in, so they show up at the milkhouse at the exact same "time" they did the day before. This is why you can't set out seven bowls of dog food to take care of the feeding the dog for a week. The dog would eat all the bowls on the first day and starve for the other six. It doesn't know it must save a bowl for each day. It only knows the here and now.
People on a commuter train know they will be getting off the train at whatever time (or thereabouts) that is on the schedule. Hence, human patience is the resolve of the time it takes to travel. Therefore, fighting over a short-term squish is just a sorry excuse. The travelers already know they're getting off the crowded train. Rats would not.
But I agree with one of the other above posters, it was probably about sports. Which would bring the individuals in the melee to a lower level than the rats.
HIs comment was appropriate. There are too many people on the planet and you can trace many of our problems to overpopulation.

Humans have been acting this way for thousands of years and long before overpopulation was ever considered, This is a human thing and not an overpopulation thing.
More excuses to dismiss the acts of individuals instead of putting the blame where it belongs on the individuals causing the problems.
If over crowding was a problem then we would expect to see constant violent confrontations at sporting events where there is a hyped combative attitude but generally we do not see it, yes there are a few but overall very very few, Trying to blame crowding and overpopulation is bull!
I also love it when people BLAME one another for whatever, and then they offer NO SOLUTIONS to the problems. They just like feeling full of themselves, and are just about as useless. Therefore, I would suppose it is the blamers who are responsible for the fighting on the train. They are totally useless people feeling very full of their self-centeredness.

If many of you folks looked into it you would see that the story many of the rich have been telling us is a lie. One big lie is regarding population, and the problem is society is not meeting the fertility or replacement rate. The rate is 2.1 children per women but that does not totally take into account of problems like war, famine and other problems. Many people say the rate should be 2.4 or higher. Places like Japan, Taiwan and many other countries are at sub-replacement births. Look it up or just keep believing what MSM and the wealthy tell you.
You can just google 2.1 children and it will bring up many results, you can also try/google fertility rate

It was most likely parade people going home all wet. Maybe some had had wee a bite of the craitcher, too. Just to get warm. It was more likely exuberance on getting out of the weather than hostility.
The NJT police are no great shakes either. Many are so out of shape they can't police a latrine. Also when enjoined by their own supervisors not to do something they get the local cops to do it for them. They are not like most cops in that they are unkempt and incompetent. But other cops stick up for them.
I think that NJT Police are just a Security Group they are not real Police and don't have that kind of athority. The Guardian Angles could do a better job.
The NJ Transit Police are a real police agency and have all the authority as any other police agency/officer in the state of NJ. They are sworn officers of NJ and even though their primary jurisdiction is Public transportation they have the same police powers as any state,county or local law enforcement officer.

Kingoprix ... you got it exactly right. Too much alcohol. I was in the Secaucus station last year on St. Patrick's Day and saw that same late afternoon Port Jervis-bound train loading. It was packed with young, rowdy revelers. I was glad that I had the option of taking another, NJ only train to my destination just 20 minutes later.

The fighters were white. They were the St Patty's day crowd (this was Sat 16th), According to reports the same Jersey service had to arrest people last St Patty's 16th and 17th 2012.

Saint Patricks day is today(sunday) and this happened yesterday(saturday), I guess they were celebrating a little early but I suspect you are correct in that some type of intoxicant was involved.
yeah, today is St. Patrick's Day but yesterday(Saturday) was New York's St Pat's Parade. Only one fight reported out of what I am sure were many on both NJ Transit and the LIRR. It's no big deal.

Don't you wish everybody on that train had been armed? There's no way a brawl or any other violence could have occurred then, because fits of anger and spur-of-the-moment decisions are impossible when people are carrying guns.
I was about to say that I'm glad that there were no guns on board and nobody went into "self defense" mode, or somebody likely would have been killed over some stupid remark. A punch is one thing, a bullet quite another. These were likely teens who will be allowed to grow up and get over it rather than lying in a grave.
