Late-winter storms could bring more snow to Northeast

Terry Prather / AP

Snow falls early Sunday, March 17, 2013, as an Amish family travels to church services near Maysville, Ky.

A pair of storm systems that were moving across the country on Sunday could join forces to bring snow to the Northeast — even as the official start of spring approaches next week.

One storm was spreading snow showers from the Cascades and northern Rockies into the northern Plains and was expected to bring snow to the Dakotas, Minnesota and western Wisconsin tonight, the Weather Channel said.

There was also a chance of snow in West Virgina, southwest Pennsylvania and northwestern Virginia Sunday night, according to meteorologists.

Another storm system was moving over the Ohio Valley Sunday and was expected to continue moving east, joining the northern system to produce a "fairly potent storm off the New England coast Tuesday," the Weather Channel said.

In addition, severe thunderstorms were in Monday's forecast from southern Ohio down into Kentucky, Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and northeast Texas.

Snow was expected to close in on parts of the Northeast as the work week gets underway. The Weather Channel said the best chance for accumulating snow and freezing rain was in New England and other interior sections of the Northeast.

Snow is also possible on the I-95 corridor from Washington to Philadelphia Sunday night and from New York to Boston Monday night.

The National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration called for a chance of rain in New York City Monday, with showers also forecast for Tuesday. NOAA also forecasted snow early Tuesday morning in Boston, but little accumulation is expected as the precipitation turns to sleet and rain during the day.

Wednesday marks the first official day of spring.

The groundhog should have been shot. Weather was a lot better before his prediction. No offense meant to Peta. It was just a joke.

The groundhog is a rodent, not a meterologist!!

The last time I checked the calendar Spring falls on March 20th. Besides, it is not like it's a bad thing to get snow in March. Where I come from in New Hampshire I have seen it fall in May and September...followed by 80 degree weather!! We need the snow. It gets rid of germs. And without the snow on the mountain tops, there will be drought issues if we get little rain in the warmer months.

I sometimes wonder about people, if they think before they comment. Seriously, how many of you took oceanography, astronomy, physiology or anatomy in high school? Broaden your horizons, it will make you look smarter the next time you open your mouths or type a response on the next blog!!

Wow I am glad the Continent of America is made up of the NE and only the NE it sure is good to see that they have such good weather coverage, I would hate to see what happens if a storm of any type hits anywhere than the NE. Oh wait it does every time short of a hurricane weather hits other parts of the US !sr then the after thought the NE. Get over yourselves and start reporting on the weather in other parts who cares about the NE.....

The storm is heading to the NE, why would they report whats happening in Arizona. If you need to know the weather, look it up.

Jeremy Mcclaren...they usually report weather stories about where something is happening, not where nothing unusual is happening. When there is an earthquake in Calif they don't discuss Philadelphia much, when there is a tornado in Oklahoma they seldom mention Alaska.

You have issues, get over yourself.

Get a real life. It's a story about a snowstorm headed to NE. It mentions many other states. For example, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, etc. Or is your brain so small that you think all of that is NE. Maybe every place besides where you live is NE?

Snow??? New England?? OMG! Run for your lives!!! Oh, wait a minute, they have snow storms from October to April there. Two years ago it snowed a foot on April 1st. I remember snow in every month growing up in Vermont. I just don't get the avalanche of media coverage for snow. (Pun intended.) I think I'll go outside and enjoy the 70 plus degree temperatures today. Happy St. Patrick's day everyone.

      MM and Jeff, and Dong

First of all I dont live in AZ. The weather that hits NE is usually in the Midwest 1st. Then heads to NE, but they never mention how it affects the Midwest. I am doing what is covered by the !st amendment and voicing an opinion u dont like it move to Europe. Dong if I have a small brain which can gaurantee you that iti s much larger than your Dong and your IQ that I dont think of everything east of my state as the NE.

I guess you don't consider what other people are doing is also covered under the 1st amendment. Perhaps we can create another amendment to the constitution, and everybody who disagrees with poor little Jeremy can move to Europe.

We have had 3 snowfalls in Iowa over a bout a 3 week span. Each one dropped more snow than the one before. The last one was wet and heavy. I hope that our spring sees more rain than last. We need the rain, but not like the rains we had 2 years ago.

Because snow is highly reflective, a vast amount of sunlight that hits the snow is reflected back into space instead of warming the planet. Actually I have seen it snow in the east even in May so this really should not be a big deal but I guess it is if you are riding a buggy with no windshield wipers ! At one time though I think it is curious Amish people say they live with no modern convenience . In reality the only thing we are born with is legs to walk and the wheel alone is a modern convenience no matter if it is on a car or a buggy ! The only difference between a car and buggy is the way it is propelled down the road . Both are a convenience .

It's been the same here. Dreary, cold and no sun. We've had the 3 snowstorms that passed through on the way to the NE, on top of all the snow that's been falling since Nov, and this one is hitting us also.

Maybe the news should report on how we Midwesties suffer for weeks on end not seeing the sun and having snowstorms and 20 degree and below days without killing each other by the time mid-March rolls around. Enough already! I'll be happy for global warming for crying out loud!! I wish I could be a snowbird for at least 3weeks during the winter.
