Small jet crashes into homes in Indiana, kills 2

Mike Hartman / South Bend Tribune via AP

The front end of a Hawker Beachcraft Premier jet sits in a room of a home on Iowa Street in South Bend, Ind., Sunday, March 17, 2013. Authorities say a private jet apparently experiencing mechanical trouble crashed resulting in injuries. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Roland Herwig says the Beechcraft Premier I twin-jet had left Tulsa, Okla.'s Riverside Airport and crashed near the South Bend Regional Airport on Sunday afternoon.

A small, private jet crashed into three homes in South Bend, Ind., killing at least two people after a failed landing attempt Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Four people were on board the plane that reported electrical problems while attempting to land at South Bend Regional Airport, according to an FAA spokesperson. Two people on board the plane were killed and two others were injured, according to Andrew Todd Fox, chief crash investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board.

One person on the ground was seriously injured, according to officials.

The Beechcraft Premier I twin-jet departed from Tulsa, Okla., and made several attempts to approach. On the final approach the engine stalled and the plan plummeted into a near-by neighborhood, according to the FAA.

Speaking to reporters Sunday night, John Corthier of the South Bend Fire Department said all those inside the affected homes have been accounted for. One home has yet to be searched by authorities because it is unstable, though the owner has been contacted.

A 1,000-foot perimeter has been established around the scene and almost 250 people have been evacuated, according to a spokesperson for the South Bend Police Department.

“There is quite a bit of fuel that is still in the basement and that is one of the main reasons why we have the area blocked,” said Corthier.

There was no fire at the site of the crash, but there was a gas leak, which prompted the evacuation. The area will remain evacuated until at least Monday morning.

Investigators expect to have a preliminary report of what happened in the next seven to 10 days.

How incredible this crash has not caused a tragic death toll to both those in the airplane and on the ground to in their homes at this time.I hope those injured make a speedy recovery and the situation is quickly resolved for those whose homes have been impacted. Kudos to the pilot for his quick thinking, which obviously played such a critical role in things turning out so amazingly well. Considering how many lives could have been affected on board,on the ground otherwise.I would even say he was a hero.

All over the web are the same seven sentences and lack of detail. At this point the pilot could also have been the dimwit who did it.

You might enjoy the additional information on this link.Which provides a lot more information then just seven sentences. I have often found the Washington Post very informative when other sites aren't. Also check the link I posted in response to Sadden American 2012.

If breaking stories have little information, I often check other news sources first before posting. That allows me to provide more informed posts. I know of other folks who do the same. Assuming only what is in a story posted by nbcnews is all that exists,,may deprive one of rich news resources on the Internet.

Yet another death due to air travel... I think it's time for Obama to ban airplanes. After all, if we can save just one life, then it's worth it. I believe that's the dem's rationale for regulation right?

So from now on, we should ban all planes that travel more than 18 inches off the ground at speeds more than 56 knots. After all, if that's fast enough for cars, then it's fast enough for airplanes.

Ironically, there will be a NTSB investigation and depending on what the caused the accident, the government could propose new federal regulations covering such topics as aircraft design, maintenance, pilot training and virtually any other area to minimize the probability of such an accident happening again. It's impossible to prevent an aviation accident, but it is possible to minimize their occurrence. Thank god air transportation is not governed by something like the 2nd Amendment, which is why is the safest form of transportation around.

        B707320C,

You forgot the part where the victims' families of this air crash could, in theory, file a civil suit against the manufacturer of the plane. They might not get a dime, but it is something they could do. Unlike firearm manufacturers, whom are immune.

Pragmatic, if you want to actually look at things pragmatically, then you should at least compare apples to apples.

If there was nothing wrong with the plane and the pilot deliberately flew it into the ground, the plan manufacturer would not be held liable. Just like if somebody commits murder with a gun, the gun manufacturer would not be held liable.

On the other hand, if the plane crash was due to a manufacturer defect, then the manufacturer can be held liable. Just as if a gun kills somebody due to a manufacturer defect, then the gun manufacturer can be held liable.

But that's ok - don't let logic get in the way of your political agenda. It's what makes you a lib.

False. Firearm manufacturers are immune from lawsuit. They have zero liability, even in the case of defect (which is very difficult to prove anyways, since the normal operation of a firearm is to discharge a bullet.)

        • 4 votes
        #1.18 - Sun Mar 17, 2013 10:17 PM EDT

False. Shooters can sue the gun manufacturer if the gun does not work properly. Look it up. What is true is that victims can't sue the gun manufacturer for the actions of the shooter.

Again, sorry to let facts get in the way of your political agenda. That's the problem with liberals - every now and then their bleeding heart arguments run into people who actually know the facts.

But don't let that prevent you from spewing your propaganda all over the place - it's what makes you a lib.

But that's ok - go ahead and continue to spread falsehoods. It's the only thing that liberals like you are able to hang your hat on.

At least when it comes to guns, I suppose your bleeding heart is in the right place... so your falsehoods don't create that much harm - worst case is that we overregulate the gun industry. I don't have to show you anything.

Because you have nothing. The law had a chilling effect. That's why Remington sold defective 700 bolt-action rifles for years and hasn't been to trial since 1998. And because gun manufacturers are also immune from consumer protection laws, they didn't have to do anything to fix it, so long as it doesn't impact the price of their shares.

For once in your life, do some research and learn the facts.

Researching is how I make my living.

But that's ok - go ahead and continue to spread falsehoods.

It's called spin. You know, like saying that we should ban planes because people might die. Then complaining that I'm not comparing apples to apples.

But when it comes to your falsehoods on larger issues like our economy, people like you are going to run our nation into the ground by spreading your lies, all in the interests of a political agenda.

Look, you can pigeon hole me without knowing a dang thing about me and play the partisan game. But you're only playing into the hands of both parties who've been whittling away our civil rights for decades. Divide and conquer. Or you could assume you don't know everything about a person and find things out. See, this is how decent people behave.

But maybe I'm stupider than I thought for coming on newsvine and expecting decent people. Given the comments about an incident that has killed people, the comments are just disgusting.

You see, aviation is heavily regulated. You can't buy a plane without background check. You can't just come and pay for one in cash. You can't fly a plane without a special license and training. When it comes to guns you can buy a gun without background check. You can buy guns for somebody else who can't pass background check. See the difference? Plane is not designed to kill and there are all sorts of regulations. Guns are and you can buy them with no trouble. Even cars require special license AND registered to an owner.

By the way most liberals do not oppose guns. There are few people yell ban guns. I am for responsible gun ownership, but when I see a guy dressed like a cowboy with a handgun on his belt walking in a grocery store in our SAFE town I think it is ridiculous. If he dressed like a goofball, how do I know if he won't act like one?

Relax, Obama is not taking your guns away. But try to work your brain at least sometimes and you will understand that guns without record, background check and in hands of crazies are bad.

For one thing, jeft fule is a quote from another article. For another, Captain Internet, since the pilot in command is the sole authority as to the operation of that aircraft it is, by definition, the pilot's fault for taking an airworthy aircraft and flying it into the ground. As you dally waiting for history to be written, I'll remind you of EA401 where three grown men flew a 1011 into the Everglades using a nose gear fault for cover.

That a witness used the word 'stall', however inappropriately, and the lack of fire would make me look at fuel exhaustion, which again falls to one place.

                #1.32 - Mon Mar 18, 2013 4:36 AM EDT

                Cheetah,

You are right about EA401. It was deemed as pilot error. On landing, the three pilots of the crew became distracted by what was a faulty warning light indicating that the nose gear was not in the down and locked position. It was night. They put the aircraft on autopilot to hold altitude while all three pilots attempted to check on the nose gear. One of the pilots went below deck under the cockpit to visually inspect the landing gear. In all the commotion in the cockpit as pilots moved around to open floor hatches the autopilot was accidentally disengaged and the aircraft began a loose altitude, unnoticed by the crew until just prior to the crash.

Was this accident pilot error? Was it caused by the faulty warning light? How about that it was dark outside over the Everglades? How about the poor positioning of the autopilot switch? Well, the FAA attributed the cause to the crew's inability to proper monitor the flight instruments during landing. The solution was to develop new crew resource management procedures so that by law at least on pilot must fly the airplane while others troubleshoot issues. Since then, there has been one more change....airplanes no longer require three pilots. Now, as you would say, there are only two "dimwits" in the cockpit.

It's easy to blame humans and in some cases they do act alone but in many cases there are many contributing factors. Best to see what comes out of this investigation. In the meantime, you sound like someone that likes to drive--one of the least safest forms of transportation out there.

Check out this link to get more information. Including the pilot repeatedly circling the airport attempting to land the plane before the mechanical failure caused him to crash. Additionally, other sites report he clipped the top of one home, hit the second, causing significant damage, then came to rest against the third. I would say, his attempting to land the plane multiple times so no one would get hurt,IS doing the right thing to avoid causing injury to others. Also, this isn't the only news source site available.

Immediately after an accident such as this, information will be sketchy at best. The initial report says the pilot was talking to the "Control Tower". If this was indeed the case, you can be sure that Tower was keeping other aircraft out of the way of the troubled aircraft and the pilot did all he could. I pray for all those affected. I'm not familiar with that particular airport, nor the weather conditions at that time...BUT I do know that with the up-coming Control Tower closings, our skies (and people on the ground) will not be as safe as they are now. The government's "Grand Standing" will be 100% to blame for the tragedies that lie ahead. Just ask any pilot about the safeties that will be compromised when towers are closed.....

                            ...it won't be "pretty".

We all know this was caused by climate change, I learned that watching Al Gores cable network he sold to big oil. And let me point out abortions are freedom in action but guns are bad very bad. Good day you scumbag liberals good day indeed.

Just another "libruls r eeeeevilll peepul!" troll who thinks liberals are to blame for every single bad thing that has ever happened in all human history, tony. I just paid him back in a little of his own coin. Personally, I know plenty of conservatives, and most of them, like most people of any political persuasion, are mostly fairly good people, but I'm tired of sitting silent when one of these people that think liberals are nothing but evil spawn of an entire different species come spewing their keyboard diarrhea on every single vine...

You are not fit for a civil society. And now people are dead. Hope you feel some sense of shame. But that's just a fool's optimism.

Interesting (though not included in NBC's report) is why the DHS was called to the scene.

DHS is all over the place. A plane crashes into some kind of building and I thing they will be there ASAP just in case it wasn't an accident. This sure appears that it was an accident, but I think anymore DHS will error on the side of excess rather than ignore something that later turns out to be something else.

The fact is too that we have no idea of what kind of "noise" they are looking at. Any time there is any kinds of rumors about anything, I think they will respond. Probably excessive the vast majority of the time but they don't want to get caught sleeping.

Unfortunately, latest reports indicate at least two people are dead. Unfortunate, and I hope the death toll does not rise higher...

Maybe because "NO FUEL" ? ? ? Ran outta gas and the BRS wasn't hooked up yet.

They are saying the basement is full of fuel, so obviously it had nothing to do with lack of fuel.

I can see a tree line and what appears to be an open field in the background. Why hit a house(s)? Pilot didn't care much about innocents or those onboard. Maybe there is a need for an in-depth interview ? ? As soon as I can get an address on the site, it's gonna be "Google-Earth".

They are saying his plane stalled. There is a field, but not a large one! On the other end of the field is MR Falcons and I'm sure that had a lot of people in it since it's St Patty's day.

Do you think the pilot intentionally aimed for the houses? Could you possibly be that stupid? Clearly you know nothing about aviation..

Uh, read the story. They made several approach attempts, couldn't land for some reason, and on this approach, the plane stalled and went down. Jets don't "glide" well, particularly at relatively slow speed, like when they're trying to land.

Jet fuel is essentially kerosene and has a high flash point. It's not as "aeromatic" as gasoline, which goes up quickly, though kerosene (basically like diesel fuel), has much more BTUs, so if it has a hot enough spark, it would make a hell of a fire ball. Had it been a Avgas powered aircraft, the fire would have been quick...
