23 years later, police seek boyfriend of strangled woman

San Diego Police Dept.

Pedro Antonio Guzman-Gonzalez is wanted in connection with a 1990 murder.

Exactly 23 years to the day after Maria Vargas was found strangled to death inside a home in Logan Heights, San Diego, homicide detectives renewed appeals for the public’s help in finding her killer.

On March 17, 1990, San Diego Police Department officers responded to reports of a death at a home in the 2900 block of National Avenue.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Vargas’ lifeless body in the bedroom of her boyfriend, Pedro Antonio Guzman.

Detectives say Vargas had been strangled to death. Guzman had fled the scene before police could question or detain him.

Since that St. Patrick’s Day murder more than two decades ago, police have been after Guzman, who’s suspected of killing Vargas.

Detectives say it is likely Guzman, who is now 49 years old, fled to Mexico following the murder.

He is described as 5-foot to 5-foot-3, Hispanic and weighing approximately 140 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. Guzman was 26 at the time of Vargas' murder.

On Friday, the SDPD released a photo of Guzman in hopes of locating him and reopening the case.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact the SDPD Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. Up to a $1,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of Guzman, and tipsters may remain anonymous.

With so many other unsolved murders, I wonder where they find the time to look "now".

Mike,

They do it so the family can feel that justice was done.

A short, squatty, dark haired, violent Hispanic male in Mexico. He should be a piece of cake to find. *rolls eyes*

the headline SHOULD read , 23 years later, police STILL seek.....I read the headline and thought the cops were idiots that it took 23 years to look at the boyfriend. But I got sucked in, I guess, to click on it and boost their traffic

So you wouldn't have read it if the word "Still" was in there? I am guessing you would have.

D Bennett...what part of, "23 years later, police seek boyfriend of strangled woman", do you not comprehend? There is nothing that suggestions any time frame of whether they knew all along it was him or not. Sounds like to me you lack reading comprehension skills. My guess, English is not your first language, huh?

Actually, the article says they "renewed appeals" to find him, which would indicate that they had been seeking him earlier.

Julieann, it also said he fled the scene before he could be questioned or detained. Maybe it's you who lacks reading comprehension skills.

One more thing Julieann, next time you insult someone's comprehension skills, you might want to avoid grammatical mistakes in the VERY next sentence. Idiot!

Jean Cooset, does it matter at this point? No, she is dead. Still, she deserves justice to be served...legal or not. Let's hope this dude has not killed anyone else. My guess, he is capable just to save his own skin. If he is in Mexico then they will only deport him to the USA so long as prosecutors do not seek the death penalty, should he be found.

Why are they looking for him? Does Obama have his green card and work permit waiting?

I think stories like this a great, and MSNBC should do one a week at least. You never know who is really living next door anyway, at least that's what my neighbors say.

If you are going to do that... then you are going to have to age the photo to show what he might look like now. That photo is 20 years old.

It doesn't say this, but they must have new information about the murderer which probably involves him being in the U.S. at this time. Surprising they had any time and space for a non-gun crime.

This guy escaped to mexico years ago and will probably resurface in the US once amnesty laws go into effect, creating a pathway for all mexicans to become US citizens at taxpayer expense.

Re-starts the old argument of legal vs illegal, but aside from that, I can't see why they decided to make this a story. It's been going on for 23 years - no leads, no hot clues, just the same old @!$%# they've had for the last 23 years.

                  This isn't news.
