Fire destroys 30 cabins near Great Smokies

At least 35 cabins and 145 acres in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, have been scorched by a blaze that started over the weekend. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. — A wildfire burning in a resort area outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee has destroyed more than 30 large rental cabins.

Ben Bryson, a fire resources coordinator with the Tennessee Division of Forestry, says the 145-acre fire was first reported about 5 p.m. ET Sunday in Sevier County, in eastern Tennessee.

Bryson says two National Guard helicopters are being dispatched Monday to help fight the fire, which has been contained and isn't expected to spread.

Bryson says some of the cabins were occupied and about 150 to 200 people were evacuated, but no injuries were reported.

The area is home to country star Dolly Parton's Dollywood theme park, which Bryson says is not being threatened by the fire.

Maybe this is where they came up with the famous name "Great Smoky Mountains National Park"...

Or, of course, it could have been from way back when the American Indians were using their cell phones....

Creek Dog, I'm sure all the people in the area of the fire think this is just as funny as you do.

    I brought the marshmellows :)

LNF - lighten up, I read a little sarcasm into his post.

    My post is sarcasm too.

Of course I am happy no one has been injured and what a great loss.

    Yes. It was sarc....

That said, Kumbiya my lord, Kumbiiiyaaaah. Lisa, please pass the whiskey... Thanks babe....

In all reality though, I do hope no one gets hurt and that it is put out soon. The pic of the hillside was not up there this morning. Nor was the vid. Those are some large cabins.

Luckily it's not a residential area where the people would be out of a home for awhile. Since they are rented cabins, everyone will be fine. They can rebuild. Not to mention, wildfires fertilize the hillside and the trees will regrow much faster then normal....

    Wonder what started it.

No, Smoky Mountains comes from the pollution from Knoxville, getting trapped in the mountain ranges. Believe it or not, Knoxville has just as much pollution as LA, or about any other major metro city, just 1/10th the size. That's how Republicans around here like it, cheap and let them choke on the poisoned water and choke on the poisoned air. Republicans don't believe in things like EPA, FDA or USDA. Only CIA, FBI ...

No, I am not a Republican. Nor am I a Democrat. I swear no oath of allegiance to either party. They do not deserve it, nor should they expect it.

So, that makes you a Republicrat.... ;-)

I hear you though, I can't trust anyone anymore. Doesn't matter who I ever voted for, they never followed through with their promises that got them elected in the first place....

When questioned why they didn't follow through with certain things, they always have an excuse. Blaming everyone and everything else as if they had it planned what excuse they're going to give you before hand...

How sad for you Warrren that you have never had the pleasure of being in this particular part of the country. While this group of cabins are all in one place, there are hundreds if not thousands of cabins to rent in the Smoky Mountains. I rent one at least once a year. One of my favorite ways to spend my vacation.

I got married at Black Bear Ridge Resort last June. We all had a wonderful time and I'm saddened by the news that those cabins were destroyed. It really is a lovely place and provided lots of great memories for me, my spouse, our families, and friends.
