Has spring really sprung? Snow, chilly temps make it hard to believe

Temperatures are much lower than normal for this time of year, and yet another winter weather system is in store for the weekend. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

The first day of spring didn't feel very spring-like for many Americans.

With snow totals topping 16 inches in parts of New England and temperatures only forecast to reach the teens in parts of the Midwest, Wednesday was decidedly wintry, regardless of the date of the calendar.

Snow and sleet slammed the Northeast, with lingering snowfall on Wednesday leaving 7 inches in winter-weary Boston, according to weather.com. Parts of New Hampshire saw 16 inches; Maine got a foot.

Nina Walker, who lives in the Boston suburb of Woburn, told The Associated Press she shoveled about 8 inches of snow off her driveway on Tuesday. Having lived in New England her whole life, she said late-season snowstorms were fine -- but only until March 31.

"Once I hear the word 'April,' I am really offended when I hear the word 'snow,'" she said. "So this is OK today, but a couple of weeks from now, it had better not happen."

Temperatures battled to get out of the single-digits in Minnesota, reported KARE11.com, an NBC affiliate in Minneapolis-St. Paul. It was the coldest start to spring for Minneapolis in 48 years, the station said.

In Michigan, 15 inches of snow were reported, which included both lake-effect snow and snow from the same system that had made its way to the Northeast, weather.com said.

One to six inches more were possible in Michigan and Wisconsin -- which got 11 inches in the north-central part of the state -- and one to three inches were forecast for northern Indiana and northeast Ohio, which were already pummeled by freezing rain and ice this week.

A pedestrian walks through the campus of Phillips Academy during a winter storm in Andover, Mass., on Tuesday, March 19. Winter went out with a blast in the Northeast on Tuesday, snow and sleet closing schools in some areas and making roads an icy, slippery mess a day before spring starts.

Careful, you'll wake Algore and he'll start spewing his venomous hate and lies about how all weather, cold or hot, is caused by global warming.

Okay Global Warning nut burgers, start your misguided, illinformed, propagandized lecture on how this is all because of Man and cows farting!

And please disregard all previous ice ages that were followed by varying periods of warming BEFORE MAN EXISTED!

Come visit us here in Florida. It is sunny and 70 this morning.

Having grown up in cold and dreary Ohio, I feel that I have earned the right to gloat a bit!

    Dear first posting Moron....

If you would stop believing everything FuxNEws, GOPers' and Industry are telling you, stop reading bad science that is supported by those listed entity's, you would understand what global warming is....

Seems people in your mind set say "So much for Global Warming" when we have an early Spring, stating that it isn't the ice age they say can happen, then when it is cold you say "So much for global warming" when it is colder than usual.

    The facts are as follows;

Global warming has nothing to do with how cold it is or how warm it is at any given time, it has to do with the effects of global weather pasterns due to the melting of the Ice caps, that pushes more cold water into the gulf stream.

This effects weather patterns as the colder and fresher water does not heat up like its Salty companion. we count on the convection patterns of cold water sinking and warm water rising to help fuel our atmosphere, giving us rain and controlling the Jet Stream.

Global warming is about the effects of higher temperatures on the Ice Caps, not any specific part of the world at any given time.

Due to warmer temperatures at the Polar regions we are seeing the erosion of Polar Ice caps, both North and South. This dumps more cold water into the gulf streams, thus effecting our climate. <Oh and don't even try to say there is more ice..There is a huge difference between pack ice and Seasonal Ice..One is thicker and lasts for 1000 of years , the other comes and goes with the seasons, it is the seasonal ice that is replacing the pack ice and that is problematic>.

I know you cannot grasp anything else other than the "Good Science" brought to you by the same credible scientist that say the Earth is only 6000 years old. But now even the GOP are actually looking at the process with a different set of glasses, and are acknowledging that we are effecting the climate.

Yeah sure we will be able to drill baby drill more in the Arctic, shipping lanes will be better for commerce in an Ice free North Pole, but the Climate changes could make parts of the Sahara a tropical forest and Europe and North America a dust bowl..

So go ahead and say "So much for Global Warming".

    Moron.

Oh but since you apply to that Good Ole Science to this problem you shouldn't care, because I am sure you are preparing for the end of the world or rapture to come before you n ur kinfolk is affected by that commie liberal Obammy weather thing...

Perhaps you can explain why the polar cap areas of Mars are also receding at this time. This has been written about since 2007. For all us morons out here in Realsville, that would indicate that just perhaps solar activity has more to do with the shrinking ice caps then burning fossil fuels.

      #8.1 - Wed Mar 20, 2013 3:32 PM EDT

Funny you would mention another subject you are so apparently ignorant of and lacking proper study....

MARS IS NOT EARTH...SOLAR ACTIVITY EFFECTS A BODY IN ACCORDANCE TO ITS ATMOSPHERIC COMPOSITION.

Try breathing the atmosphere on Mars see what happens

The atmosphere on Mars is over 95% CO2 the "Polar Caps you mention are actually Dry Ice, not Ice from H2O, Huge Difference..

If you wish to believe your 6000 year old guys again, I would ask you to try a little experiment....

Buy some Dry Ice, like is found on Mars, now take some Ice from your freezer..

O.K.....Now place your hand on the Ice from your freezer...

What happened? How did it feel?

Now touch the Dry Ice like is found on Mars......<If You are as ignorant as your responded posts I will tell you NO DON'T DO IT in advance>.

      But if you do...

When you return from the Hospital after being treated from third degree burns, you go ahead and tell me the Ice on our Planet is the same as on Mars..

They are not....H2O Ice <The stuff in your freezer and our Planets Polar regions>melts at temperatures over 32 deg.F and turns back into water.

Dry Ice,or Cardice, is formed at a temperature of −78.5 °C (−109.3 °F) and changes from a solid to a gas with no intervening liquid form at temperatures of −56.4 °C (−69.5 °F).

And since Temperatures on Mars range from −17.2 °C (1.0 °F) to −107 °C (−161 °F), With Polar Temps ranging from a warmest of 27 °C (81 °F) to −143 °C (−225 °F) it would not even be good science to compare the two..

Well that is unless you are a member of the Earth is 6000 years old club..AGAIN....

As carbon dioxide sublimates back into the atmosphere during the Martian summer, it leaves traces of water. The water ice on Mars is less than 221 Parts per million and never obtains a liquid state, going from Solid Ice to Gas form only.

On Earth, The driest Desert on our planet still has over 243,000 ppm and an overall Water Vapor total over 40%. Now compare that to Mars with a total water vapor count of less than 1/1,2000,000 ppm and tell me we can compare the atmospheric effects on eh planets equally.

Guess what if your theory was true we would see increased activity throughout our solar system, but we are not.....The moon of Jupiter named Ganymede should show the same changes, but it has not increased in it melting, release of water vapor on the surface or into its very very small atmospheric shell.

      So explain that Einstein...

If Solar activity causes changes on two planetary body's.... shouldn't it cause changes exponentially <That means to all equally> ?

Oh yeah that's right your Belief Structured Scientist will say some imaginary floating above us thing called God shields the rest of the Planets from the effects, and just lets it happen here to punish man for its sinful ways..

But again speak your ignorance, and speak it loud...

So in conclusion, if you are back from the emergency room because you and your Bible, Corporate Scientist said you could touch Dry Ice, like is found on Mars, because it is the same thing as Ice here on Earth.

So again I ask you to answer this simple question..

If solar activity increases are responsible...Why haven't we measured the same effects on other solar body's within our own solar system?

Here is a clue..Because no other planet has organisms on it that feel they can do what ever they want and cause no effect..

      Don't believe me..

Drop a tablespoon of Oil in your drinking well then drink it...We do effect our planet and every aspect of its natural systems.....

I mean read real books, not just the ones they tell you to.

A few basic chemistry books, a few Astronomy books...

You know those Blasphemos Liberal thinkin books U n yer kin is a gunna burn at the next cross lightin...

Rossby Waves in the Circumpolar Vortex that circles from west to east in the middle latitudes switched from Zonal to Meridional flow creating different weather patterns in the middle and high latitudes.

Rossby Waves migrate from west to east on a 4 to 6 week basis. However, when the Meridional Wave amplitude gets deep, with cold air pushing toward the Equator and warm air toward the Poles the system blocks.

        http://drtimball.com/2012/current-global-weather-patterns-normal-despite-government-and-media-distortions/

The Circumpolar Vortex switched from Zonal flow to Meridional flow. This allows cold air to move farther south in some areas and warmer air to move farther north in other areas.

Remember the mid west heat wave last summer? But the news didn't talk much about the colder than normal weather on the west coast. Just like now the US is still cold but warmer air has moved up toward Greenland. CO2 has nothing to do with it.

          Reply#9 - Wed Mar 20, 2013 5:36 PM EDT

CO2 has nothing to do with it?

And you are really going to use this hack for your example..

Here is a great side note of this Lobby mouth Piece...

The deathless and - in many specific respects - completely fictional meanderings of Dr. Tim Ball have begun appearing again on right-wing blogs all over the net. At City Troll, at Convenient Untruth and at New Orleans Lady, the same tired and retreaded old climate rant paints Dr. Ball as the courageous victim of a plot to silence a well-meaning skeptic.

But Ball can't even tell the truth about his own resume. His claim to be the first Climatology Ph.D. in Canada is a total falsehood; his degree was in historical geography - not climatology - and it was nowhere near the first ever granted to someone writing vaguely in the field. It also was granted by the university as a doctor of philosophy, not the more prestigious "doctor of science" that Ball claims in these articles.

He claims as well to have been a professor (again of climatology) at the University of Winnipeg for 32 years, while he confirmed in his own Statement of Claim in a pending lawsuit (look here ) that he was a professor (of geography, never climatology) for just eight years

SO a paid LIAR is your proof that Global warming is not dangerous or caused by human activity..

This guy has also said Oil from Tar Sands is not as corrosive as we are told, even from the Oil Industry...

HE is an idiot...And so are you for following him without seeing who and what he is...

Another one of the Earth is only 6000 years old clubbers..

Tell me why would your benevolent God want to destroy the planet?..

          No really answer me please?.

And don't say to destroy all the godless liberals that are in control....Supposedly your God is all merciful and all forgiving...

          Try again..

Another Moron on the Web...Spouting off more really ignorant information...

Try these links to actually read th truth about the effects of CO2 in our atmosphere...

Those are the EPA and NASA...Not some hack paid by industry but real Scientists with real Ph.S's

I mean I only have my Bachelors in Astronomy from NMU as well as my Masters in Applied Physics and Sciences <Emphasis on Organic and Bio-Chemistry> from UM. Worked as a research Scientist for a living....After serving in the Armed Forces as well... I Am not a liberal Happy nor am I a Conservative Republican, I am an American who can see what is happening all around us.

Remember in the 70's when everyone was telling us about acid rain and its effects on the environment?

Well, the camp you are in is the same camp that said there is absolutely no such thing as Acid Rain from Smoke Stacks...

How has that piece of Bull-crap stood against the test of time?

Same people and groups are telling us CO2 and Humans are not responsible for recent Weather conditions and Global Warming is as far fetched as acid rain.

The same sheepel that have told us in the past, that drilling in deep waters is safe and that fail safes would never allow a great oil spill.

Again how ha that logic panned out?

          But what do I know?

50+ years old with Masters and experience on my side that only wishes us to not fu*k up this planet for my Grand Children and Great Grand kids as well.
