In a case that is drawing comparisons to the Steubenville, Ohio, rape case, police in a Connecticut town have charged two members of the high school football team with sexual assault involving different 13-year-old girls.

Torrington Police
Edgar Gonzales, left, and Joan Toribio
At least one of the alleged victims has been reportedly taunted online.
Though many of the details of the allegations are sealed from the public, two Torrington High School football players, Edgar Gonzales and Joan Toribio, both 18, are charged with felony second-degree sexual assault and other crimes, The Associated Press reported. The allegations stem from an investigation that began on Feb. 10.
The two men, who the AP reports lived in the same condominium, have both pleaded not guilty.
Gonzalez's lawyer, J. Patten Brown III, told NBC News that the allegations against his client involve statutory rape — illegal sex with a person under the age of consent.
Gonzalez remains in detention in New Haven, Brown said, because he is unable to post bail.
Toribio's attorney, Charles F. Brower, told NBC News he could not discuss the case at all. According to the AP, Toribio is free on bond.
According to the Register Citizen, whose reporter Jessica Glenza collected social network posts related to he case, dozens of athletes and Torrington High School students have taunted one of the victims on social media sites. She was called a “whore,” criticized for “snitching” and accused of “ruining the lives” of the players.
On Sunday, Trent Mays and Ma’Lik Richmand, both players on the Steubenville, Ohio, high school football team, were convicted of raping a 16-year-old West Virginia girl during a series of alcohol-fueled parties. She was also threatened online.
On Tuesday, prosecutors charged two girls, 15 and 16, with intimidation of a victim, telecommunications harassment and aggravated menacing for posing threatening tweets about the Steubenville victim on the day the verdict was announced.

Dos'nt surprise me! Always know that HS Football had these problems, but no one realized it was rape until recently! It's about time this crap stops!
I went to high school in the 1960's and this behavior was a KNOWN wrong. "Jail bait" was the description of underage girls. I don't know what you consider "recent", but this is not news to anyone else. If you are 17 or 18 or older and you act up with a 13 year old, you will be in serious trouble.
They've known: too many coaches and advisors (as well as the "rock-star's" parents) all agree to look the other way when a 'hero of the club' is involved. If there are questions they come out with the ridiculous "Boys will be boys" mantra and it usually all goes away (along with the victim).
BUT: When ANYONE blames the victims for being 'whores' etc, someone needs to stand up and remind them that This Isn't India. The parallels are frightening to anyone that believes that they live in a land that is socially progressive and forward looking. Shyte responses like this aren't supposed to happen: something is broken that needs fixed!
An inquisition is needed to find out just WHAT goes on in the college and HS sport circuits and WHY this is coming to the fore. There are too many boys behaving badly in a system that tolerates it and wants to look the other way, thereby protecting the perpetrators. With a lousy system governing sports like this, it's no wonder mockers sound like they are from third-world countries: that's how the sports systems currently operate.
Ban players sponsored for schools, colleges, etc, Not pamper them anymore !
What could be less classy and more juvenile then adolescents taunting a rape victim via the Internet?
Hm..., ? Let me think
Full grown "professional" journalist sensationalizing it so as to make money and the expense of the same rape victim.
I have no genetic kids, but I have stepkids, and I can promise you that if any of my kids got raped, Whomever did it would not make it to see a court of law. I don't need the Judicial System protecting me or my family. Hence I called them Judicial, not Justice because that died a long time ago, in a place that was called America.
I'm no fan of statutory rapes, because a few years difference is usually normal in couples, but 18 with a 13 year old? That's just plain rape and they will get theirs from Bubba, very soon.
15 will get you 20.
It would greatly help if people didn't give football the status that it has. These guys are given the mentality that they can do whatever they want, whatever they want and not face consequences because they toss a ball around and wear helmets.
Maybe if these parents took care of their kids instead of assuming their coach is raising them it'd help. I've seen so many parents pay absolutely no attention to their kids and simply assume that sports are an answer to raising kids themselves.
No one admitted it was rape until recently. Players were placed above all others and held to different standards. Bout time this came to an end!
Ghetto - You can take them out of it, but you can't take it out of them.
1st the word HERO has completely lost its true meaning in this era thanks to the media & a society of low self esteem since it is said far to often for things that are not heroic what so ever and one of those being ..Football players or any athlete really....sports are entertainment NOT heroics ...its a phucken meaningless game for crien out loud !!! counts for nothing important and nothing heroic about it what so ever...another example is I happen to be a Veteran and I was in a place considered part of a war zone for awhile in the 70's but not directly in "Nam" ...am I hero did I do anything I would consider heroic....NO... but yet anyone who seems to have gone in the military is now labeled a hero(except we were treated like crap by many civilian types back then , many of them now wannabees & chickenhawks IMO today) and I happened to have volunteered during the draft and anyone who went in pretty much after 1973 is a volunteer so you know what you signed up for...only a small percentage of those that serve are put in what is truly harms way , most are support...nothing heroic about turning a wrench , dispensing supplies or sitting at a computer..just a job in support of those that do the bleeding the real heros....ex: in our wing(347th provisional) we must've had 6-700 maintenance and support personel for 24 aircraft and 48-50 aircrew , those were the guys hangin' it out there , not us fixers..
and the people that usually taunt these young ladies with their bullying are nothing but cowards with low self esteem and as the old saying goes the apples don't fall far from the tree , I'm sure the parents of these bullies are exactly the same way since kids learn from the examples set by adults....and there are whole school athletic programs that are built on myth & hero worship and it seems some of those coaches are only really concerned about their contract renewals and the bonuses they recieve for having winning teams so they tend to protect their "star players" to protect their own self interest with no regard for the victims of such heinous behavior and just add fuel to the fire , plus alot of them were the "star" when they were kids too...so they tend to try to cover up such heinous behavior with the good ole boy and blame the victim philosphy ....there is alot of guilt here by many not just the animals that need to be put away for a long time and forever put on the sex offenders lists...they've ruined and damaged these young ladies and they will be eventually harshly judged by both societry and most of all by God
So, society glamorizes the majesty of the sports world and the opulence and debauchery of the entertainment world and we wonder how children do these things. Our society has been indoctrinated with the belief that the "Super Bowl", "March Madness" and the cover girl on Sports Illustrated are more important than education, family and responsibility.
Children aren't taught to respect their elders so how do we expect them to respect each other. People insist on doing their own thing, being their own person, and having their own way. As the popular saying goes, "I don't want anybody telling me what to do." Society objects when government is firm with criminals or when schools enforce strict rules toward children. As they grow up in an irresponsible society we are somehow confused when these atrocities occur.
Children no longer communicate, they "text", incessantly. Then they take it to the extremes and "sext" and we scratch our heads and wonder what drives them to these acts. Pornography, suggestive music and a hedonistic attitude are promoted instead of respect.
Respect starts in the home, and then carries over into the school, the city streets and the community. The "thug" culture is permitted and education is neglected. We place the young athlete on a pedestal and then wonder why perversions, bullying and other misbehaviors occur. Some schools are even eliminating "Honors Student Awards" for fear of hurting the illiterate’s feelings. Perhaps the schools should have been more concerned with educating the illiterates rather than punishing the successful. More than half a million Florida students sat in classrooms last year in front of teachers who failed the state's basic skills tests for teachers.
The nuclear family is disappearing replaced by social engineering experiments that have no basis in fact, only ideology. Today we have illiterate parents raising illiterate children, a dysfunction that should outrage us all. This combination of broken families and illiteracy can only lead to a disintegrating community, society and nation.
Society has morphed into a struggle of misinformation, fear and intimidation. But what is far worse is our acceptance of it as if it was the way it should be, too afraid to speak out, too scared to rock the boat, too intimidated to do anything but pick a team or lose interest all together. The polarization of our society is palpable, emotions and ideologies have more control over opinions than common sense.
These children are the result of decades of tolerance rather than discipline. Unless we begin to honestly address these issues the problems will only grow. We as a society must demand that respect, personal responsibility and self-reliance are reinstituted in our children. But first we have to look in the mirror and see the real culprits.
Sadly, these cases are becoming the norm rather than the execption. There is no moral compass today. I find it appalling that blame is attributed to the victim for "ruining" the life of the athlete.
My brother and I resolved an issue with a boyfriend who beat up our sister when we were younger. No law, no court, no continuances just a plain, old fashioned thumping by angry older brothers. The woman beater cried and threatened to call the cops. We told him to go for it.
The fellow never bothered our sister after that and to our knowledge, never bothered anyone after the run-in.
While not advocating vigilantee style tactics, maybe if the young men had ad ass whupping, they might understand that every girl has a father and a lot have brothers. Violate the female and you will pay immediately with a thumping.
Just my two cents!
Although the men are older and should know better I can't help but wonder if the girls had anything to do with it? Seems when I was younger 14 and 15 year old girls controlled a lot of the lives around them. It doesn't take long for a 6th grade girl to figure out what they have and what it will get them. I really think although society claims these girls are to young to know what is going on they do. Girls of today are no different than the girls of 40+ years ago, are you?
You must be confused or a man. When a woman or girl says no or ask someone to stop forcing ones self on them is rape.
You see at 12 I was raped by a classmate. I guess you would say I asked for it because I was at a friends and she had asked me to spend the night. I found out later she was in with a few of the boys in school on a bet to see who could have sex with me first because I was developed and a virgin. Well, I woke up in blood stained sheets with no clothing on the next day. I do not remember saying it was ok. I don't remember a thing about what happened. I had passed out because I wasn't a drinker and it was everclear.
When I went to school I was called a whore, slut, tramp and more but I didn't want to have sex and I didn't ask for it. My brother came looking for him because the "rumor" had traveled up to high school. He was on my campus with a bat and the boys father showed up and took him home. He left the school soon after and I never heard from him. I ran into him as an adult and he didn't look at me in the eye or say hello.
I have a teen daughter and I know she is clueless of the consequences of sex. I am not talking about pregnancy I am talking about the social aspect, the mental aspect and more. It's all peer pressure.
So no, I don't think these girls had anything to do with being raped.
@Kevin Joseph Street: "Sadly, these cases are becoming the norm rather than the execption. There is no moral compass today."
What's changed is victims are more willing to report sex crimes, and the media covers absolutely anything that gets page-hits. The actual incidence of rape is way down in America now vs. the mid 20th century. Check the published FBI figures, for example.
Education really can work. What a shock.
this stuff makes money! if you don't want your kids involved then keep track of them, know what is going on in their lives as well as know where they are, at all times, otherwise its the parent that is to blame. we should start making parents responsible.
Confused,
Sorry but you don't sound confused, you sound mean. A victim is a victim. No means no, and 13 means no.
an 18 year old with a 13 year old also looks a lot like a pedophile to me too.
anamerican,
Sorry you had to go through what you did. You sound like a good person, and thank you for sharing so that others might get a survivors view point on this. I send you peace and best wishes for you and your family.
Well, well, well....how many emails did that rape case in India elicit? And how many of you said things like, "India is so horrible! Who'd go there? People seem out of control there? It is a land of psychos and rapists...blah, blah, blah!"
How many rapes of 13 years olds, 16 years olds, military women, etc. have been reported just in this month in the US alone? Uh? Many more do not capture the headlines...or do not even get reported.
Now eat the humble pie and go do something! If there is a problem recognize it and make the effort to do something. Do not scapegoat, and do not point to other cultures. India has far fewer rapes, sexual assaults and stalking than the US.
I'd like kids in schools and colleges to talk about stalking...which is rarely talked about. It is not even taken seriously until someone gets raped or tortured and killed.
Now many of you guys getting outraged and commenting...go do something! There is a wonderful group called, "Veterans & Iraqi Civilians for Healing" group. They are healing each other to deal with all the pain of invasion and occupation. They need support and money. You can see their webpage on the internet.
There are also many other organizations that helps fight violence against women and end oppression of women. So join them and do something.
And try to get women elected to more higher office, and highest office, in every country please!
Then you'd cry yourself to sleep every night in the joint you loser.
Sexual assault on a 13-year-old. If these guys are guilty, they're not getting out in 2 years. Try 20.
Hopefully.
They will go to Juvenal court and be out in no time!! This crud needs to end and end now!!
Wouldn't they be tried as adults because they're 18?
Why would they go to juvenile court? they are both 18 years old! they will be tried as adults. It is disgusting that these two 18 year old young men thought they could get away with raping 13 year old girls. I hope they get 20 years.
They're 18 and they are men. They soon will learn what it's like to be on the receiving end of horrors.
AKRandy
18 is an adult no juv for these guys
They will be tried as adults. I know guys "dated" younger girls when I was in high school but never girls younger than freshman and mostly sophomores or older. Middle schoolers (which is what a 13 year old is) were off limits.
Our society is tolerating this type of bullying of victims. I was driving home the yesterday and went past kids walking home from high school. Saw a group of about 5 girls taunting and throwing orange pieces and rubbish at the car of another girl. They were calling her names like whore, slut, etc. I saw her face and she looked like she wanted to cry but just kept staring straight ahead. I have to admit I yelled at them as I drove by. It broke my heart to think she probably puts up with this all the time. When I was in school some of the girls were not nice but I don't remember this kind of behavior at all.
My kid better not try taunting some kid like that. I find out she does and she'll be in a world of trouble. That's what's wrong with a lot of these kids. Absentee parents and no empathy.
True. If they are 18 they have to be tried as adults. Under that, they can still be tried as adults.
To the persons taunting the victim, let's publicize their name and see what happens? Perfect for a civil suit. Hmm. that will only cost about $100k to defend. Think the parents will like that?????
I agree with John. Let the courts deal with the rapists and publish the names of the others who are disrespecting the young victims. Anyone who thinks it's OK to do this should be outed!
Product of a liberal society. not very progressive after all.
In my H.S. days, (1963 to 1967) a lot of H.S. football "stars" "had to get married" to somewhat younger students, cheerleaders and the like, most of whom they had impregnated. At that time, in California, marriage between an alleged "statutory rapist" and his victim precluded charges being brought. So, yes, they really "had" to get married. Nothing new under the sun...women are just treated better by the law these days.
Not that it matters here, as these two are 18-years-old, but in my home state, the authorities can charge juveniles as adults. It is at the discretion of the D.A. I've seen several murderer, aged as young as 15 tried as adults.
Truthfully, for some crimes youth offers very little excuse. Murder and forcible rape certainly should fall into this category.
But, thankfully, for these two there is no decision necessary. They'll be tried as adults.
Our sick society unfortunately raises some real POS's. When will we learn?
don't blame society, blame the parents.
Unfortunately you are wrong.
In this case, as in most, you have the coaches, the parents of other football players, the school system, the shrinks, the media that elevate "sports players" and make them "hero's."
This is a societal thing, not a parent thing.
When we as a society learn to stop this crap, it will. But as long as "we look the other way" it won't.
jonutah, society is a collection of people, including many, many parents. Society is at fault here because it's not just someone's parents at fault, it's everyone who ever knowingly or unknowingly gave kids the impression that it was okay to bully someone online as well.
Bill from Oregon;
WOW I thought they might be Obama's kids
I don't care who you are or what you do; sex with a 13 yo with or without consent is still RAPE. A thirteen yo is not able to comprehend situations like an eighteen yo adult. Thirteen is still a child. Not a sex toy for some pervert to have their way with.
what it comes down to is that some penis's are pigs
welcome to the hip hop generation....a generation filled with voilence, hate and an overall sense of not giving a shi% about anything or anyone...our youth has somehow found it cool to behave black...so there you go...enjoy...
Who supported Roman Polanski recently? Hollywood? The boys can read and write so I assume they know what they were doing was illegal. Depends on who you are in to many cases and what you think you can get away with.
This behavior is prevalent in every race and every generation.
Football payers have been put upon pedestals before blacks were even allowed to play or Hip Hop was a music style.
Something tells me you blame everything on the black race.
13 is young, but I know many many girls who lost their virginity around that age (13,14). I know one or two who lost it younger. I even know of one woman who got knocked up at 12. Kids are having sex that young. It sounds bad, but it's a 5 year age difference. My husband is 5 years older than me. It's not like it was a teacher who did it. I don't like statutory rape charges when you're talking about kids with other kids. It's too much of a gray area. Unless the girl was pushed to do something she didn't want to do, then don't call it rape. I've heard stories of girls that age giving BJ parties. If she's sober and willing then leave the legal system out of it. Just be a good dad and do what the fathers of my generation did when they caught someone with their young daughter and kick the boy's ass.
And if you're into statistics, approximately 14% of all 13 year olds have experienced sexual intercourse.
And dumbest loser comment of the day goes to.....drum roll please....
AKRandy!
Congrats for being the most ignorant, pathetic person here!
Blame everything! modern politics, both parents working, liberal school system, its all to blame try lack of morals, no proper upbringing, its all their. and you are all misinformed on almost everything. your stats are worthless, the reason that rape is down today is because everyone is giving it away, thanks to the liberals teaching it. and I don't know what to think about teaching it to kindergartners I guess we will find out in a couple years. the new definition to a virgin is a ugly 3rd grader that can out run her brother. soon that will be first grader. go libs go you are doing a splendid job of focking up society. even smart people can do stupid things.
You gotta wonder what kind of culture produces ingrates like this. All they do is bitch and moan about what they deserve and what they are supposed to get, and they only ever think about themselves and those people like them. The world would be a much, much better place if we can take all these inbred mouth-breathing dillweeds and mow them down.
Of course, I am always referring to those PATHETIC lil' pasty-faced racist turds who have to make every story about their racial hang ups and homo-erotic paranoia.
Say AKRandy and John: I guess you're right; you can take the redneck out cornhole, but not the cornhole out the redneck, huh? Now, go eat a bag of diks ya couple of a muttering idiots before someone drops boot on yer azzes.
It's time for coaches to fill their athletes in on what constitutes rape and what's consent, etc. Have a lawyer attend one of your practices because the athletes need to know how to behave (because their parents obviously didn't teach them!)
Zebragirl. A juvenile female can not "Consent" and a 13 year old female is well below the age of consent.
An 18 year old male is an adult in most states and will be charged and tried as an adult.
The potential is for a minimum of 30 years in State prison for the crime of rape of a child.
They know not to have sex with a 12 or 13 year old! You don't need a lawyer.
Lets not pretend that these girls all look older or are SOOO irresistable. These guys are going after underage girls :1) becuase they are bored with girls and women their own age 2) its easier to have your way with a very young girl.
Err not quite. Amazing how inaccurate some of these comments are. They're both 18, so they'll be tried as adults. And they're charged with violating 53a-71 (sexual assault in the second degree of a victim under 16), a class B felony, for which the mandatory minimum sentence is 9 months. I was unable to find a specific maximum for 53a-71 but generally with class B felonies it's 20 years. So no one is going away for 30 years unless the other charges are much more serious.
they will be looking at 9 months and registering everywhere they go as a sex offender,s for the rest of their lives, is it true that in some areas they make the offender go around to everyone in a radius and inform them they are moving into the area and they are sex offenders, if not it should be. that and put their picture up.
The bulk of these comments are about the rape of minors, what led to these girls' pain and the punishment the assailants should get.
As Paul Harvey might have said, "and now, the rest of the story". The title of the article refers to the victims being taunted online, through social media. The people doing this are as malicious and black-hearted as the assailants. They can be tracked easily and deserve to have a hard slap wake up call. Every threat or taunt needs to be tracked and the persons responsible for them deprived of their access to social media; smartphone - gone, Facebook/any/all social media pages and accounts - removed; no texting service; Twitter (ridiculous to start with) - closed. Socially isolate them, temporarily because there are ways to reinstate yourself in social media, but they can't under their own name. Cell phone companies are a little stricter - they demand a billing address (tagged) and a credit card (tagged). If they are under-age, there must be parental assistance to help address their kids' misbehavior, whether they want to or not. If reluctant, having to appear in court to answer charges would probably do them good. Be sure to publish the offenders' names.
Please do not try to copy your knothead Hollywood idols with a "my account was hacked!" lie.
If the state has passed Jessica's Law (44 have), FIRST offense sexual assault of a child is punishable by 25 years to life. We can only hope.
Connecticut? Nah, couldn't be.
I am mystified about the logic where it is alleged that the victim ruined the perpetrators' lives.Aide from the fact that the victim's life is possibly (probably) ruined,if the perpetrator's life is ruined, who exactly caused the ruin? These guys need to look in a mirror until the answer comes to them.
this guys are STUPIDS why rape a girl if are many prostitutes WOMANS around ?
Maybe some of the women and girls could start making better decisions by NOT putting themselves in situations where they can get raped. Some don't even remember some times... You may not be able to control the actions of others but you can and should be responsible for yourself...
Really Kent? Blame the 13 year old? How about, it's against the law to have sex with a child? How about not having sex with someone that is practically comatose?
Wait, what? Women get raped in a VARIETY of situations. And to the point of this story, I hardly feel a 13 year old can make RATIONAL decisions. They are still children. And nothing gives ANYONE the right to violate you, no matter what.
Kent, agree with you, but a 13 year old girl can't be expected to have very good judgement.
Where were her parents? No one can babysit a 13 year old girl, but her momma should have instilled at least enough values that she wouldn't have actual intercourse. To be fair, that's probably nearly impossible to do these days when businesses are allowed to broadcast soft-core porn starring little girls in order to sell blue jeans.
first of all, the victim in this case is 13 years old. the victim in the Steubenville case is 16. Given that the cerebral cortex doesn't fully mature until at least the early 20s neither of these victims is going to have the reasoning capacity that a grown woman would.
second, given that women are raped in their own homes, in their cars, in high school bathrooms, at their jobs, in mall parking lots etc, just where would you suggest that women go to "avoid rape"?
why not suggest that the rapists be responsible for themselves instead?
stop dragging your knuckles, learn to walk upright and STOP blaming the victim!
Hey Kent,
She is only 13. Seems to me that you may think she is old enough to be responsible. Give her a break she is a teen and I mean a first year teen.. Glad to know that you had it all in order and down pact at that age.....
It is great to know that in 2013 America some men still think that rape is the fault of the woman.
Amazing.
...oh Sialia....it's worse than that....they will blame it on the clothes the girl/woman had on...the way she walked - she was asking for it...the way she talked - she was flirting. Was not that long ago, all of these details were admissable evidence in a rape trial....what was the alleged victim wearing, saying, drinking - had she had previous sexual relations. Oh yes....society and the law saw it as the females fault. She caused it. Lots of people still think that. Ask the 86 year old grandmother who was raped.
Rape is an age old problem. This is not something peculiar to the current generation of teens or the time in which they live. The pubescent young are time bombs of raging hormones, subject to societal
pressures and morays. Every case of rape is individual in its causes, the result of faulty reasoning and a lack of self control. For any of us to judge the victims from afar is ridiculous. We cannot know the circumstances under which the mistake was made.
We all know that rape is wrong. There is no excuse for bad behavior. We are all, regardless of age or gender, ultimately responsible for our actions. The best that we can do is to instruct our offspring in the “Golden Rule” and teach it by example!
Baco78: Kind of hypocritical to call people stupid when you demonstrate a 2nd grade English level....from some 3rd world country.
This has been going on forever. It's only recently that girls have felt secure enough to speak out.
And there is STILL rape-shaming. People call them whores or worse, say they deserved it or asked for it, that they shouldn't have been out so late, or their parents should have been keeping an eye on them. Being raped seems to carry a bigger social stigma than raping, and this is in America!
You are unfortunately sooooo right.
This is just as bad as the crime itself. No, you did not mistake my meaning. Just as bad. It can actually lead to more emotional scars than the rape.
Absolutely right! And so very sad.
We had teen sex in the 60s, but it was considered nobody else's business. It was within steady relationships.
Can someone who grew up in the 2000s explain where the idea came from to betray a confidential relationship?
You may think it makes you look cool, but it makes you look untrustworthy and immature. Of course, the shield of privacy doesn't cover rape. I'm glad girls are speaking out.
Sex with underage minors is a crime and I'm glad these two are being charged. The people making the threats need to be charged as well. They need to learn that there's no excuse for terrorizing somebody via the net etc,, regardless of whatever the situation is. By the way, where were the parents of everybody involved?
Peace.
probably working...not all guys or the stay at home dad have the 100k job it takes to raise a family
'Geez, don't rat out our local football heroes just because they raped you.' 'We'll get you for that.'
What a sicko society.
13 year-olds????? Even if it was consensual, how stupid could these guys be? Laws on sexual contact should be part of sex ed classes. Oh, yeah... the conservatives got rid of those classes. In that case, the coaches ought to educate these boys.
Why the hell are 13 year old running around unsupervised where there are situations to be raped??? I don't let my 13 year old out of my site!!!
I highly doubt you know everything about your kid/kids. You may be fooling yourself they do. Just wait until they turn 15 and get gang banged by some thugs. But gee, they shouldn't have been alone somewhere for 10 minutes, right? 13 year olds were "running around" because they COULD and wanted to. Whether it was known by their parents is a different story. This is not the fault of the 13 year olds as it seems you keep trying to claim. The FAULT likes with the scumbag "men" (they're 18) who chose to act like beasts instead of using their brain and keeping it in their pants.
That's creepy...in a very creepy way....
No 13-year-old girl can be presumed to be able to give consent to sex with an 18-year old because of her age. No way, no how, period.
Kent
I assume that you are also going to school with your daughter and staying with her all day to make sure that she does not get raped. And that when she leaves your house to go somewhere, you are with her then too? The bottom line is that she is not 100% safe moving around in the world. YOU would do HER a huge favor if YOU started advocating against the rapists.
In the NFL, teams have people that do that very thing because the burnished golden aura of worship takes on a different color in the public eye when you're getting paid big money and screw up. The pros consider you an investment and want you to get your mind right or get gone.
At some schools the coaches do educate the players...I used to coach HS football in CA before I moved east. On our teams, we had weekly dinners the night before games - players, coaches, cheerleaders, some parents - the players had to serve dinner to the cheerleaders and make sure they were situated before the players could eat. On travel to games, the players waited and allowed the cheerleaders to enter and sit on the bus first and were taught to thank them for cheering for them. If any of our players disrespected any of the cheerleaders or were found out to have disrespected any girl/woman at the school, they were suspended for the first half of the next game and then punishment would grow if the behavior continued.
Sarcasm: God forbid that anyone "ruins the lives" of football players. Society needs to start protecting the victims A LOT more. If these allegations are true, these guys should go to jail for a long time. If the allegations are true, then these guys are pathetic scum.
I am glad that those involved in furthering this crime are being tried. We have too many that use the Internet and Phones as a way to harass innocent citizens. It is not acceptable.
What I don't understand is how so many teens are getting hold of alcohol in order to have alcohol fueled parties?
Can't the parents be held legally responsible for this? Especially the ones who own any home where parties like this take place.
There's alcohol in my home, always has been. It's not under lock and key. I suppose my son could have accessed it had he so chosen, but he's always been trustworthy and known better than to steal or help himself. I've always demonstrated responsible drinking and so have all the people in his family. We've discussed it since he was old enough to comprehend the altered states of people in films.
Somehow I doubt these families brought up those children with the care I've invested in my own son. He's 25 now and never had more than 2 alcohol drinks at one time in his life. There is so much to teach our children. Tobacco, alcohol and drugs are an important part of that education as well.
Was alcohol a part of this case? I wonder...
On the one hand you want to try these men on rape charges because they are 18 and on the other you want their parents punished. You can't have it both ways. By the way, my 18 YO stepson got 6 years with no good time" for consensual sex with a 13 YO. He is certainly being punished. I wonder who will pay down the line for his life being ruined; and I do mean "ruined". Will you hire him?Can he live in your neighborhood? His kid is growing up without her father and is probably condemned to a life of poverty. My stepson has been converted into a social time bomb. You all showed him and whoever happens to be around when he goes off.
Who to blame....who to blame....how about we blame the rapists? People who taunt victims should be considered in the same light as people who illegally attempt to influence juries or witnesses to a crime and processed accordingly.
To each Mom and Dad...your son is a stinking pig who was raised with no morals at all. HE ruined his life, and he alone. Since there are boys that refuse to go along with this type of behavior, it is clear that YOUR son is low. Really low.
How do you know how these kids were raised??? I had excellent parents and I grew up well. No rape, no smoke, no drink, and no drugs. EVER. Now my brother was a different story and we both had the same parents???? FREE WILL is what everyone has. I believe rapist should be killed but I don't do it. I let the law handle it.
No Kent you did not grow up so well.
Someone who blame the victim of a rape like you did numerous times has some serious issues with women.
If the lawyer is stating the truth, that it is statutory rape, it means they had consentual sex, but the law says that 13 year old girls can't legally have sex with someone over the age of, usually, 16. These boys are legally adults and can't have even consentual sex with anyone under 18.
Just because the lawyer is arguing on the basis of the ways things used to be is no argument. We don't burn witches at the stake, and we don't rape children, even drunk children.
Anyone age 13 is not allowed to have sex at all. They are below the legal age of consent. Girls that are 14-15 can only have sex with a partner within 4 years. Age 16 is the legal age of consent which means they can have sex with whomever they please...although I'm not 100% on the laws in Connecticut
Actually, as a mandated reporter, I am a teacher, I know that as long as the sexual participants are of the same age it is NOT illegal and not even reportable. In my state the 16 and 17 year olds can't legally have sex with an 18 year old. It gets very convoluted when sex that was legal last month isn't legal this month because one of the partners turned 18, especially when everyone is in high school together and have been friends for years. Although girls are rarely charged, if ever, every 18 year old needs to be explicitly taught the law, regardless of anyone's religious or conservative agenda. It could mean a lifetime of being a registered sex offender.
Instead of the age of enlightenment, we are now living in the 'age of entitlement." By that I mean that kids today have been brought up to believe that everything they do is right, that it is okay to act upon their feelings, and if someone is in the way, that it is their own fault. Laws just don't apply, and if you have money, even better, a lawyer will get you off, your mother will get you out of trouble. These parents aren't even sorry about this rape, even these news anchor woman are taking pity on these boys as if they aren't rapists. You people are sick! Just because a boy plays football doesn't mean his life is somehow worth more than this troubled girl. She was fed alcohol and/or drugs, and some parent provided the means for these kids to drink at a private home -- knowing providing alcohol to minors is a crime. You don't get to drink and rape teen girls as a gift for doing well at football. There is no such thing as consensual sex with a minor.
looks like feisty and pigotry kids turn out to be just like them . true scumbags .
That's a pathetic cheap shot cliff and you damn well know it. Just because someone politically disagrees with your ignorant right-wing ass doesn't mean they have low morals or teach their kids as such. Just the opposite, usually.
For a study in lack of integrity, try looking in the mirror.
Ruin the lives of the football players?? What about the ruined lives of the 13 year old girls?
Why are athletes given the right to rape? Why do taxpayers support high school sports that result in maladjusted artificial college football players that prey on our daughters? These "heroes" treated another human as trash because we hold them high. Lock them up and melt down the key. Also, re-examine the attitude toward "warrior" high school sports.
Why did these boys have to pick on these obviously under-age girls? If having sexual release was their goal, there were many slightly older girls who would have gladly "put out". The girls who tweeted or other ways harassed, threatened and intimidated the victims come mind. I suspect these boys are too socially inept to deal with older females.
It always surprises me if an athlete/jock gets convicted of anything.
Article not edited, is "bold" the same as "bond" as it states: According to the AP, Toribio is free on bold
Yep, that ain't a good example of proper English. I can't but help wonder where they're spell checker was at.
Once again, the REAL victims here are the poor boys. Looks, guys will be guys and when these little gals with the loose morals throw themselves onto them...it can simply be expected that there is going to be some fun going down. But then these little hos get freaked out and blame the GUY for what they (the girl) did! It simply isn't right that these girls get off Scot-free for what is, let's face it, sexual assault of the boys.
It is a known biological fact that a 13-year old child does not have the brain development to make adult decisions...which is why there are laws to protect them.
These two "boys being boys" are 18. They are legally adults and therefore responsible for molesting a child.
You are one truly sick individual and I'm willing to bet you'd change your tune pretty fast if it were your 13-year-old daughter in this scenario.
Greg, I don't know if you made such a stupid comment because you wanted to make people angry or because you really believe what you posted. Either way, you are one sick ba***rd! It's because of people like you that nothing has changed in societies thinking/behavior towards rape and why women continue to be treated like the criminal. If you have children, I feel sorry for them because we know which side you're on.
Gbjm, Greg's a troll. Let it go.
Greg: STFU, you idiot. Wait until it is your daughter, then let us see what position you take. OMG, I just cannot believe how stupid you are. Laughing at the responses you are getting, I suspect. Too immature to have an intelligent discussion about an extremely serious topic. OMG
Guys, it's called sarcasm. At least, I'm pretty sure it is.
Greg, are you nuts?? Do you blame the young boys for getting molested by pedophile priests? Beam yourself back to earth.
Sorry but if you look at Greg's post history it's definitely not sarcasm.
Yes, as incredible as it sound, he is that screwed up !
The victim ruined things for the team?
Toss the whole team.
No doubt they will blame the victim again. Typical of their culture, or lack of.
Plain: OUR culture.
LETS MAKE THIS NATIONAL NEWS!! ITS BAD!! ITS WRONG!! THERE ARE NEWS STORIES BLASTING THIS HORRIBLE STUFF ALL OVER THE PLACE!! Its going crazy. its madness.. WHAT WILL WE DO.. WAIT.. what? what did you say? There are at least 2 cases going on right now that effect a grand total of 4-5 families and directly effect 2-5 kids. In a nation with roughly 100 million kids who could commit similar crimes BUT DO NOT EVER, is there REALLY anything to discuss? Are you getting worked up over a local event that has as much to do with your daily routine as a guy waking up in Fiji? Im sure the locals will take care of their own as they have in this country for DECADES.. move along people, there's nothing to see here.
I'm sure just because those are the only ones that are reported THEY MUST BE THE ONLY ONES.
I mean, EVERY SINGLE RAPE IS REPORTED after all right?
There is ABSOLUTELY no logical reasons WHY one word IS in CAPS but the OTHERS aren't.
BUT I think writing LIKE this make MY argument STRONGER and, wait I FORGOT exclamations POINTS !!!!!!!!!!!, make my RANT look so COOOOOOL.
