Inches from burglars, teen hides in closet and calls 911

Doian Oladipupo grabbed a phone and ran into her parent’s walk-in closet when she heard burglars enter her Chula Vista home near San Diego.

The intruders came so close to discovering the 15-year-old that their voices could be heard during the 911 call.

“Robin, Robin, bring it over here. Bring the bucket over here,” one burglar said.

See original report at NBCLosAngeles.com

“I can hear them. Don’t talk,” the dispatcher told Oladipupo.

Unable to speak, Oladipupo tapped on the phone to answer the dispatcher’s yes or no questions.

“I was just so thankful,” she said of emerging from the ordeal unscathed.

The teen was home alone Tuesday afternoon when she said someone knocked on the door then opened a window. She ran upstairs and called 911, but soon after, one of the intruders entered the closet she was hiding inside.

Oladipupo kept calm, steadied her breath and went undetected by the intruders ransacking her home.

An 18-year-old and two 17-year-olds were arrested in connection with the break-in after Oladipupo identified her family’s belongings in the trio’s car, which was also stolen, police said.

Police believe the burglars are connected to other heists in the area.

Good going Doian. Unfortunately, the Criminal Justice System, other wise known as the Victim Injustice System will permit the thugs to walk freely very quickly. At which time you might be a potential target to ensure you can't testify against them.

Good luck. I wish you well.

Victim Injustice System

Indeed. So true. That is because of liberal criminal loving hug-a-thugs that run the system. There is nothing wrong with the penal code. All the laws that we need are in place already. Including gun laws.

You mean the gun law that says that you can't sell a gun to a criminal and should be penalized if you did?

Sorry, no, it's not in place. That's what the gun lobby is squealing so loudly about; they don't want such a law.

Byron, the law you apparently think is ok, tell me how that would work? The downside I see is it would require that the seller be able to predict the future which, of course, nobody can. Would you also hold car sellers responsible for traffic accidents caused by the purchaser committing a DUI and causing an accident? Are you truly ready for that? I have a wild and crazy idea. How about we hold those who actually commit crimes responsible for their actions?

The criminal assistance beauro propably had them out before office hours closed the next day, your tax dollars at work. just think if all these criminals were not on the streets, then none of those high paid jobs would be necessary those people would have to work for a living. cops, lawyers both defense and prosicuting, judges counselors a few psychologest they built a carriers around criminals so they have to insure their existance to justify there own. searriously what good would it do to be a probation officer if there were no criminals or a criminal investigator, if the crime rate drops to low all they have to do is let some out of the storage and training facility and whamo job security and pay raises, new jobs for family members, its a aweet deal.

When my daughter turned 16 and got her driver's license, I bought her a gun and taught her how to use it. It may not have made a difference but at least I gave her a fighting chance. Doesn't your daughter deserve that much?

This is why all girls and women need to be trained in the safety and use of firearms. A girl is no match against three men otherwise, and yes, 17 and 18 year old males are "men" even if they don't act like it. If they had come into the bedroom and been staring down the business end of a shotgun, they'd have defecated on themselves and then ran like mad. And if she'd killed a couple of them, nothing of value would have been lost. The sort of thugs that will break into houses and not care that anyone is home, are the type that will murder, rape and torture your family.

I can't freaking stand people like you. "A gun would have stopped the crime." Yeah, sure. If they had any guns in that house those boys probably would have found them and then this story would have a whole hell of a lot more blood in it.

I'd like to see one you jerkhole gun nuts actually point the gun at and then shoot a person dead and act as nonchalant as you do on the internet about it. I bet my savings that you'd either not follow through with it because most of you aren't natural born killers and are just people with very loud mouths and opinions; or you'd either follow through with it and spend the rest of your lives with PTSD and crippling guilt.

Ask any soldier or police officer that has actually killed someone, in the line of duty, by shooting them dead. It's not an easy thing to do. Even if you're trained for it.

First, I commend the young girl. I am certain the boys would have heard me hyperventilating. Secondly, I say no to the gun argument. Maybe they deserve to be shot but I doubt it. Teenagers sometimes do some really stupid things, even crimes, and I prefer if we give their life a chance to straighten up. Yes, if they came at me and I was holding a gun I would probably pull the trigger but I would be sick about it.

I agree Bill. We own guns, but I think this was the best way for this girl to have handled it. I would have tried the same. However, saying that, I would have had my gun with me. If for some reason they would have discovered me, I woud shoot. But I definitely wouldn't shoot unless I saw them coming at me and I definitely don't think this young girl (unless fully trained) should have had a gun.

You mean there was no mention of a gun, it was locked in a safe on the second floor with a trigger lock on it, the Ammo was locked up in the basement cabnet these were responsible people. she did not have the necessary 15 minuts to get things together, the audacity of those criminals to come un announced, the cops did not even have time to properly great them, why don't we all just dispense with all the feel good BS and say that is one lucky girl! also those were petty teenage crooks,if they stumbled across her they more then likely would have pissed their pants and ran. a good old fashioned scream works wonders at the proper time. that is the real world you never know, so wake up from your dreams.

Yes she is alive and well, she and the dispatcher seemed to have performed excellently in this situation.

A gun is not a "instant win" card. In this case it was not needed due to luck and the skill of the victim and dispatcher.

Unfortunately, there are many other robbery/home invasion cases out there where the resident WAS detected.

In the end, until the 2nd amendment is repealed, the RIGHT to bear arms is yours to use, or not to use.

I sincerely wish that anyone who ever faces a situation like this, comes out of it without injury, no matter how it is resolved.

Guns do not kill people, and guns do not save lives. The victims judgement, actions, luck and tools available all set the stage for a successful, or failed, survival of a crime. No one of these categories is solely responsible.

With 2.5 million in jails/prisons and another 7.5 million on parole it is likely these perpetrators will be out on a low bail amount with months to convict them and on parole soon to commit more crimes. This is the way The Fast and the Furious works. We ALL sooner or later will become a victim of these criminals and gang members because of the lax judicial system. These law makers and courts would much rather see these criminals out on parole to victimize us then behind bars where they belong. I am glad this girl helped in apprehending these low-life criminals. Five ***** stars for Doian Oladipupo and One * star for Judicial System.

A gun would have gotten someone's stupid son killed or worse, someone's stupid son would have taken the gun from the girl and killed her. At this point these boys are guilty of breaking and entering. At the most they will be convicted of other thefts in the area as well. If there were a gun involved they may have been at the morgue right now and their parents preparing for a funeral.

The sort of thugs that will break into homes and not care that the residents are there, are the kind that will rape, torture and murder your whole family. Stop making excuses for these monsters. They are not 'kids'. At 17 and 18 years of age they are adults, and can be tried as adults. The California justice system is so screwed up, that these "little darlings" will be back out on the street in six months and the next girl, may not be so lucky. If they'd have found her, they didn't need a gun to kill her. They'd have raped her, and beat her to death. No gun required. It's evident from the comments on this thread that a bunch of people are living in fairy tale land, where guns are evil and the police will save your arse. Good luck with all that. You'll need it if thugs ever break into your house.

              JimCA,

I'm sure you're from California. How is the liberal push of making all gun owners criminals working to reduce your crime? Not at all? What a shame... Texas has less murders per capita than you do and has probably one of the highest gun ownership rates in the country. There's no difference from shooting someone and killing them, than running over them with a car and killing them. They're just another tool used by criminals. The second amendment was put in place to keep the government honest. Why should they care about your rights, if you have no way to fight back for them? Just wait until the government passes a law that they can just walk into your house and search it for no reason under the precedence of, "What do you have to hide, right?" which they've already started to push towards under the "Patriot Act".

The dispatcher was awesome! I don't know how many times I've heard replays of calls to dispatchers and it seems as though they ask the dumbest questions - perhaps to calm things down? The "how do you know he's not breathing?" one when a person calls for help. Or the "Are you the homeowner? No? Then who are you?" questions when someone is calling for the fire department. This dispatcher was great and seemed to be actually listening.

I don't think a statement like that is correct. There are plenty of good parents whose children make bad choices and plenty of bad parents whose children learn from their bad example and make better lives for themselves. Good parents give their children the tools they need, however the child builds what he or she wants with those tools. I'm just thankful the young lady and the dispatcher worked together and there was a good outcome.

I've never been in trouble for anything and never chose to do anything or be friends with anyone that could get me in trouble. My younger brother thought different we have the same parents and had the same rules he chose to do what he wanted to do.

I never understood how people can blame the parents each and everytime. Yes SOME parents are to blame and yes I believe parents should give guidance and a stable home to the children they create. BUT if a child desires more than what his or her parents gave them he/she should try to find the proper help and guidance outside of the home and not help himself to other people's belongings!

Blaming the parents is all the rage - but without thought.

My sister had a son and a daughter - the daughter is a police dispatcher, the son spends most of his time in prison.

For which should my sister have been held accountable?

                  ABSOLUTELY!

Are you serious? I knew too many people killed by their own guns. I've never met anyone for whom a gun offered any protection at all.

JimCA - You need to get out more. I know hundreds of people who own guns and none of them have ever been killed by those guns.

                  ???

The fact that your experience differs doesn't bring those people back to life. Not owning a gun would have spared them.

So now you are a fortune teller? You can prove factually that it was the guns fault that they died? They are inanimate objects with no will of their own. They are not inherently good or bad. THey are a tool, just like a hammer is a tool. Speaking of hammers, perhaps they should be banned as well considering how many people are killed by them.

Very, very few people are accidentally killed by a hammer or commit suicide with one.

If one is suicidal they will find a rope or a high bridge or a very sharp knife. People die in accidents all the time from thousands of different causes. It's PEOPLE who kill, not the inanimate object which has been so demonized by the left. It is just as ridiculous to ban hammers as it is to ban firearms.

ill take my chances with my own gun than hope that a criminal plays fair during our home invasion.people are just unreal.if you are affraid of a gun, dont own one.what are your ideas of changing a criminals heart? or stopping illegal acts? a bad economy makes people more desperate as well.its almost an economic perfect storm and you all would rather be a victim than defend yourselves or hurt a criminals feelings.and you want everyone else to be a willing victim just like yourselves.thanks, but ill handle my own future.

                  Three stories this morning:

Teen shot dead sneaking into the wrong house. Owner has a gun. Owner warns drunk teen, then shoots him dead. Absent the gun, of course, the owner would have called 911 and the teen would be alive with an awful hangover this morning.

Teen in house alone and burglars break in. Teen hides, calls 911, and the cops come and arrest the burglars. No guns, everyone safe.

Director of the Colorado Prison system, a man who has been around guns and violent criminals his whole life, opens the door to a guy disguised as a pizza delivery man as is shot dead.

How long before the gun nuts come out of the woodwork complaining about MSNBC's bias against guns.

While the situation ended well, I would like for MSN to do a follow up story and report the consequences for the trespassers. Let's see how well our judicial system follows through with the three criminals.

Yes, be glad she didn't have a gun, she was/is untrained in it's use. Nobody wants to take another person's life, but there are times when it's your life or theirs. What is it to be?

Speaking for myself, and I don't consider myself a nutcase when it comes to supporting the 2nd Amendment. But I do have weapons for home defense. I hope and pray I never have to use them. But make no mistake about it, you break into my home, I have no idea of your intentions.

Are you there to rob me, rape me, or kill me, or all three combined? I don't know what your thoughts are, but I do know my thoughts. I have no choice, but by using excellent gun control, several shots to the largest mass of your body. Which is the chest area. I'm sure my .40 glock will put you down, real fast.

Having said that, I hope and pray I NEVER have to do that. Like many home owners, they don't want to have to use deadly force, but they will. It's because nobody KNOWS THE INTENTIONS of the punks breaking in. And there isn't normally time to call the cops until after the shooting is over. The cops are only minutes away, the punks are right there, ready to harm you. Take your choice, I know why choice I will take.

Congratulations on your decision to defend yourself, instead of depending or hoping others will do it for you. And like you, I sincerely HOPE I never have to draw my firearm again.

Oh, please allow me to clarify one point. You note that you don't know the intentions of the "punks breaking in". In point of fact you DO know their intentions. They are KNOWINGLY committing a crime against you. Whether that is a monetary crime or a physical crime is immaterial. If they have entered your home without your permission, if they are accosting you out in the street, they mean you no good will. THEY are KNOWINGLY and WILLINGLY doing YOU wrong. There is no unknown about it, there is no grey area.

How can you call this a "happy ending"! Something was taken from this young girl, that can never be given back! What a shame that this girl, or anyone else, for that matter, has been exposed to such a climate that has the presence of mind to take the steps that she did. Crimes like these are so commonplace anymore, her innocence was taken long before it should.

If you truly want to curb crime in this country, these three should not even be given a trial; they should be hanged from street light poles in the middle of the main street and the bodies left to rot down! If anyone complains, give them the next pole!

This article excerpt is for you nimrods that think its better to cower in fear rather than having a gun to fight back with. Your chances of fighting back with a gun are better.

Public Health and Gun Control --- A Review (Part II: Gun Violence and Constitutional Issues)

                    Gun Violence and Street Crime

                    Miguel A. Faria, Jr., MD

Violent crimes continue to be a problem in the inner cities with gangs involved in the drug trade. Crimes in rural areas for both blacks and whites, despite the preponderance of guns in this setting, remain low.(11,19) Gun availability does not cause crime. Prohibitionist government policies and gun control (rather than crime control) exacerbates the problem by making it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to defend themselves, their families, and their property. In fact, there was a modest increase in both homicide and suicide after prohibition and passage of the Gun Control Act of 1968.(20)

As to how one can protect oneself from assailants when the police, as more often than not, are not around, National Victims Data suggests that "while victims resisting with knives, clubs, or bare hands are about twice as likely to be injured as those who submit, victims who resist with a gun are only half as likely to be injured as those who put up no defense."(11) Of particular interest to women and self-defense, "among those victims using handguns in self-defense, 66 percent of them were successful in warding off the attack and keeping their property. Among those victims using non-gun weapons, only 40 percent were successful.(11) The gun is the great equalizer for women when they are accosted in the street or when they, particularly single mothers, are defending themselves and their children at home.

Old Saying - God made man but Samuel Colt made them equal.

Aw heck. Let them spend the night in jail. That'll change their lives forever. Then give them a court date and send them home.

That's what they do down here in Florida.

It takes over 10 convictions here in put someone in jail for any length of time and we all have to suffer through it.

They are lucky that this 'liberal' guy isn't in charge of the jails. First, I would remove all televisions and weight-lifting equipment. The last thing I want is a buffed-up criminal. If you want to eat you better work. If you want a class I suggest yoga. And, lastly, I would not segregate prisoners based on gang affiliation. You want to harm one another? Be my guest. Let's see how many people want to be in jail after that. And, I wasn't kidding, I am mostly liberal and vote Democratic every time. People are let out of jails solely because of economic issues, so I say make the prisoners earn their keep. Peace.
