Dozens of police cars chased a motorist through the streets of Los Angeles late Thursday, before the suspect struck a tree and barricaded himself inside the vehicle.
Officials said the pursuit which sparked the tense standoff was triggered when a man pulled a gun on a police officer after being pulled over in the Paramount area at around 10:55 p.m. local time Thursday (1:55 a.m. ET Friday).
"A special weapons team is trying to get him to exit the vehicle," a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson told NBC News early Friday. "The suspect has barricaded himself into the vehicle is believed to be armed. We’re hoping everything ends up safely."
The standoff was continuing as of 2:30 a.m. local (5:30 a.m ET), authorities said.
